    466 KB Rules-Light Mech PNP OP 04/01/12(Sun)20:29 No.18541552
Ey /tg/, I have something for you.

Got bored the other day and decided I'd spend my time trying to throw together a rules-light mech RPG. Emphasis on rules-light. The thing takes inspiration from Armored Core and Chromehounds, plus many other similar games. It's somewhat rough right now but it would be cool to see what you people think.

Setting-wise, the mechs are only up to 6 or so meters, somewhat slow compared to vehicles, and are mostly used in urban combat. Energy weapons are rare and questionably effective. Melee also. So, I've tried to keep it quasi-relastic, as far as fighting goes.

My main concern currently is how customizable you people consider the game and general impressions. Would be nice if typos and errors could be pointed out. In the near future I intend on creating more parts and weapons. The name might also be changed considering the cringeworthiness.

Anyone care to try to make a character and mech though? Maybe run a short play-test over Maptools? Throw general feedback at me? Anything would be awesome.

    Here's the rulebook-

    >>18541646
Works for me. I took some inspiration from Arcanum, as far as their attribute system went. Broke it down into two fields- physical and mental. Characters have Intelligence, Power, Perception, Agility, Charisma, and Beauty.

You get 20 attribute points to spend. Each dot placed into an attribute costs 1 more then the previous- so the second costs 2 points, where the first is only 1.

Any suggestions for the example char? Easiest distribution is 1-1-2-2-3-3.

Alright, my first impressions on the first two are mediocre. Though their sites are professional looking it seems they require you to pirate or purchase the rules. That's not something I especially respect. No pitch that I could find, no example rules, just 'we made this and purchase it'. It was also a cursory glance, so I might be horridly wrong.

For the third, Mechaton Titan, I can see the appeal of the rules. It's set up almost in a similar fashion of Mothafuckin' Crap Truckers, or about as rules light as you can get. Rules seem neat and workable.
Even so, there isn't much for customization. You can't fap over the new parts you looted off of a destroyed mech, hit up the black markets to try to find the one beloved part you want. It's simplicity cuts back on the construction aspect that many people love.

A suggestion on the tank bit- emphasize that these are armored infantry, or mobile infantry if you want to get Starship Troopers in here. These are probably bigger than the mobile infantry suits, but from the sound of it, the mechs are meant to be larger soldiers that are better armored against small arms, that are faster and stronger than an unassisted trooper.

    >>18541920 is also right about tanks. If you can pierce the armor, good night. Heavier mechs might be better equipped as anti-armor troops.

Not quite. Mechs in the game, unrealistic as it may be, are likely too much on the large size to constitute as any form of Power-Armor. Distinction being that the ones ingame are piloted from a tiny cockpit.

Heinlein certainly has his place in the game though. I'll probably end up adding some extra stuff for Mobile Infantry and Power Armor, just because it's around the right age in-game. And it would add some interesting combat. And be awesome.

    >one good shot enough to kill most tanks
    nope.iso
well actually kinda. it depends who you're fighting
an m1a2 can sit out in the open and take rpg-7s all day without getting so much as a scorchmark, and they roll over IEDs like nobody's business, so for fighting sandniggers its not a problem.

compare this to your mech - one good RPG-7 shot at the leg joint = mobility kill (and step on an IED = same thing)
not just damaged or blown off tracks (which can be fairly quickly replaced) but a full on mobility kill, equivalent to losing an entire engine or something, unless you develop REALLY quick-change legs (which would be even weaker)
one good shot to the torso and the mech has fallen over, and can't get up. if it doesn't then get raped in its defenceless position it's at least out of the battle till someone gets an AVRE to pick it back up

now, fighting a modern army, yes tanks get demolished pretty thoroughly by helicopters and etc. but so do mechs. and yes, fighting modern anti-tank systems tanks may/may not (LOL CLASSIFIED depleted uranium armour effectiveness) get eaten but mechs have even less of a chance. considering mechs would be vastly more expensive than tanks to develop and then cost a comprable amount AT LEAST for reduced survivability, there is absolutley no incentive to develop mechs

so yes, you can say that fighting a modern enemy tanks likely would be pretty thoroughly countered but the same applies to mechs, and mechs don't have the advantage of being able to annihilate Jamal the insurgent

and that's not even getting into the logistics of it

BUT MOST IMPORTANTLY, none of that has any bearing on tanks vs. mechs. the winner is clear-cut --> its tanks
tanks are faster, heavier armour, bigger guns, don't fall over. they're easier to hide and easier to operate too

If you are a 25 point mech and take a hit from a tank to the legs you're almost certainly going to be crawling around feebly. That's my part of it.

Other then that there's only so much realism that can be added before it's an entirely different game. I know you're not arguing so, merely presenting facts for an argument. But I'd like to stress that for the other readers.

because a heavy mech is just laughable
all dat weight going down through dem tiny feet is going to cause problems in anything other than paved ground (and even then it might wreck the roads a bit) and heavy armour is going to necessitate an even larger mech (which will be more easily seen etc. etc. etc.). moreover, if mechs get so big that they become impervious to tank shots then a) they'll be even slower and b) how are they supposed to operate in an urban environment

    also logistics

Ok a couple things. Mech construction is rules light and simple. i like that. limiting things to hardpoints helps you to avoid a lot of broken issues

Its very similar to heavy gear

combat seems solid i guess. i wont be able to pick out any major flaws unless i try it out though

the rpg aspect obviously could use a lot more fleshing out, but im sure you know that. One big turn off for me is the use of a d3. i HATE games that want to use d3's.

I could hug you, man. So many games leave this shit out, it's aggravating.
Can you stat up some other stuff, like a jeep?

On the d3's, that's just kind of an artifact of some parts needing smaller dice-pools then a d6, to synergize well with the low number attributes. Will see if I can think up something better.

blogspot is super easy for getting one started

if you have something tangible going, next step would be self publishing through something like lulu.com, or if you think you have a big enough following it would be kickstarter.

I meant more of a german tank vs allied tank ww2 thing. germans designed their armor around deflection. not to say it couldnt take a splosion either.
So with a smaller tank there would be a chance of nothing happening because of a deflection, but as someone else had said I know nothing about modern or near future tank ordinance.
It also might be a bit too complicated for rules light. although just adding in a percentage chance for deflection would be cool I think.

tank ammunition come in over 9000 types

first you've got APFSDS or something
    they work like an arrow
    seriously
it's basically a big rod of metal thats pointy at the end, and it punches through armour
these are your armour piercing rounds
they have INSANE amounts of force. like, more force than skyscrapers exert on the earth thru gravity kind of force
they work to different levels of effectiveness based on the material - depleted uranium will actually fuck you up, tungsten is good but not great and iron is just lol niggers

then you've got a myriad assortment of HE rounds. these are the ones that go boom, and they're used for clearing fortifications, engaging infantry and anti-tank purposes
you get things like HEAT (high explosive anti tank)
HESH (high explosive squash head) and then things like the MPAT for clearing obstacles

then you've got specialist rounds like canister shot (120mm shotgun), laser-guided missiles and etc. etc., all of which can be fired out of the gun

rifled guns are "more accurate" but the kinds of rounds they can use are more limited

guns get better as they get bigger but a 200mm cannon could be worse than a 120mm cannon depending on design and ammo. also, these guns are fucking HEAVY - that's why you don't see Abrams rolling 180mm when there's no need.

it'd be cool if you put in all the different ammo types

Don't know how I missed that. Normally proofread my posts multiple times.

Uh, setting. Something like the early 22nd century, or late 21st. Here's a lazy copy and paste from the book-

ChromeStrike is set in the sort-of-near-future. A long series of wars and break-downs of alliances has done away with the U.N and other organization, effectively letting countries do as they wish with each-other. Many of the smaller nations have been absorbed entirely by neighbors.
With the advent of mechs, combat has become somewhat revolutionized. Small, urban forces that utilize mechs are especially strong. Corporations and companies that hopped on the mech bandwagon found themselves rich. With the lawlessness and wartime tensions, these companies have been free to pursue what political and financial power they like. More often then not they remain separate from their patron nation, but are beholden and supported by them.
With all the wars, and bickering, and fighting, mercenaries are especially in demand. None more-so then mech pilots.

Can I just say that I highly support this project. This sort of thing is something that's sorely needed. Bascially all the mecha RPGs on the market right now like Mekton, SilCore or Battletech are extremely rules-heavy and basically require the use of miniatures.

There's a huge untapped market of RPG gamers who prefer rules-lite systems. A great many of them are anime fans and would love a good, Japanese mecha RPG system.

Might I recommend taking these early ideas and expanding them to cover many different genres of mecha? You might have something here. Get some good arists and publish this shit.

Yeah, "mechs" already have a place on the battlefield, really. Making mechs a reality doesn't require changing the battlefield or changing technology. It just requires looking at the field, seeing the need, and filling it.

In the end, there will likely not be a clear "mech" unit, or perhaps multiple "mech" units filling various roles. And they will be more like the machines in Heavy Gear, or this homebrew here.

I think that the easiest way to make mechs make sense is to make tanks more trouble then they are worth.

I've heard a few ideas for cites in the future and the ones I thought were most interesting are the ones that focus on pedestrian access and mobility. If cities get more compact and crowded as time goes on and mass transit is able to replace more of the normal thoroughfares, and skyscrapers limit air support, than I could see large battle suits having a place. They could jump or repel (which a conventional vehicle could not) and be able carry and use heavy weapons that a normal man could not.

    And if corporate backing, construction and ownership of large amounts of these cites leads to them being in charge of security then city blocks might become more like city-states, complete with military-like forces trying avoid collateral damage for the sake of profits. Otherwise;

Ok OP i hope you're still monitoring this thread. Here's the guy i made.

Reggie Fleck is a mercenary of the cowardly kind. He operates a mech made up of just about every different part from about every different company. A completely custom yet hardy build he calls the Wrecker. But his skill in apprasing, selling, and salvaging are bar none. Should he be caught in a fight, he has found several combat uses for his shoulder mounted winch as a unique combat application.

Character creation was fast and simple. I like your Good as New perk, so i kept it. But i wanted to make up Appraiser.

Mech creation confused me on a couple places at first, but most of my questions were answered when i got through it. I think i got it all right. But things could have been worded better i guess. Couldnt find out where to calculate initiative. I may have just missed it though.

I also invented a piece of equipment. Using the shoulder attack roll, it launches a grappling hook that utilizes the STR score to wheel the target in. The way i imagined it is that mech STR score can be opposed by the target, which is why i tried to give the Wrecker a high strength score.

Looks pretty good. I like the cowardly mercenary scrapper concept, every good group needs something like that.

Sounds like making 'em was a breeze, more or less, which is good. I do need to reword some things. That'll be one of my first priorities. Initiative is the characters Agility + Perception, which will be added onto the mech's attribute page.

If you like, me and perhaps five other fellows are going to be beating the hell out of the system this Tuesday (Maybe tomorrow?) and Saturday, eventually running some sessions of the game. It would be awesome if you could join us.

Like you recognize, creation could have been much easier if it was written better. A step by step that covered all equations would have helped a lot. Listing equipment parts and weapons separate is ok, but everything else for creation needs to stay together so the player can see all his options as hes making his.

thx for the invite. i cant make any promises cuz things are busy on my end here. but good luck
