    >A Convention so large that it occupies its own city. Infinity City, the cleverly named home of InfiniCon is a relatively small, but densely packed urban paradise where fandoms of all kinds coexist in a year-round celebration of anime, video games, sci-fi, fantasy, LARP, and just about any other kind of nerdy subculture you can imagine. With multiple conventions running all the time, each organizing their own large events and gatherings, the city has had to split into several distinct districts.

    >For some, InfiniCon is merely an event to attend once a year, like any other convention. You get some pictures of neat costumes, meet some popular celebrities from the industry, visit some panels, and that's the end of it. For many more, InfiniCon is home. It is a fan's Neverland, where they get to live the dream, fully immersed in a surreal world where fictional characters roam the streets and where you can go to the local café and find a Jedi, a Ninja, a Space Marine, and zombie, sharing a table and conversing over coffee.

Let's talk about how this setting would be implemented.

Would this simply be a setting? Or could it have its own homebrew system behind it?

Personally, I like the idea of making some sort of homebrew system, but only as a sort of optional thing, where Infinicon is mainly a setting.

well, first of all we have to finish the setting more or less, until then it doesn't really worth to talk about making a homebrew for it. Not because it's so much harder but because it takes more time and if we can't even finish the setting then we wouldn't stand a chance to finish the homebrew

Instead of making this game, can we create this reality?

I mean.. all we need is to found our own city. Start small, buy land, attract congoers.. Think of it! A land of cosplay, forever. A land of fans and creative works coexisting as one!

A land.. forever bathed in the flickering glow of countless gaming screens.

It makes me weep to think on it.

think about it this way: We make a setting first, a good and proper one. After that we base the game system on the setting so others can play in this wonderful setting without always modding the rules of some other game.
And after that when enough people realize how awesome is this, we can start gathering money for the grand project. But chances are we will never have enough money for it...

I say we base the game loosely upon the Monostat system:

    http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive/13062465/

In the case of InfiniCon, particular fandoms take the place of the monostat. The more invested one is in the fandom, the more reality sort of melts away.

Use as a sub-way station. Simple enough. Expand through out the entire city. Can get to other part of the Undercon from here.
    >Second Level - Maintenance Level -
Used by the crew and workers of the Infinicon to maintain the city energy, water and other supplies line. See regular human activity from exploring for fun or dealing in something not wishes to be seen in public. Also this level is where most of the people not rich enough to gain a living space in the main city come to stay. Quite safe though there's no treasure to gain there.

    Bumping with lore, already written.

Yeah, I like it here in InfiniCon. My friend and I run a model booth at some of the cons; we sell the usual historical stuff, sci-fi, plamo, Gunpla, some wargame minis here and there. It's actually a bit of a blessing, not having to rent a shop; we just drive into a dealer plaza, set up the van and the booth and we're good to go. Of course, you've got to be careful when things get busy otherwise some of the crustier patrons will try and rob you blind. Once had to run down a guy who was trying to leg it with a large Perfect Grade Wing Zero. He didn't get far and the packaging wasn't even damaged, which is a plus. Lucky for him, the State Police got him before the Imperial Legion could get wind of him. That's one of the downsides, I suppose. You get a few gangs of vigilantes but hey, keeps the shoplifters down!
We share a flat with some other modellers and mecha fans on the hubward edge. It's pretty cramped, but we make enough. We also all pitch in for a kick ass workshop for modelling in one of the rooms. I also run some showings on a projector against this large blank wall near the flat; I tend to show older shows and most people don't pay any attention, but every now and again, we get some kid who's only seen Seed or Eva and he sits down and watches and asks if we can get him some more of the series. And it feels good, to be honest, although once we were almost lynched by a group of the Cape Crusaders for showing 'Japanese filth'. Good thing I had Megas XLR on my drive, or I'd probably be handing from my neck with a Naruto headband stuffed in my mouth.

So Far I'm liking it here in Infinicon. I've carved out a Niche here selling Various home-made food and drinks. I sell out quickly during lunchtime. I saw a gang of Naruto Cosplayers cross into videogame territory and clash with some UNATCO solider cosplayers. It wasn't long until the Capes and the LARPERS got involved. Your mention of bronies has me thinking. What conflictsgreat conflicts have occured in Infinicon's history? Before the founding of the Alliance there were probably battles of all sorts. In the early days, the LARPers were the only ones with any real advantage (they had actual weapons and armor with them). And then some fantasy and animu fags brought out there replicas, and together they banished the furries, and formed the first stages of The Alliance. That sort of thing.

Most obvious battle would be Western Media vs Anime & Manga. Each convince that their stories and plot is better (Even though it's the same just in different art style).
Civil War would also be often since it would be hard to find something everyone would agree on. Narutard against other anime fan for claiming that Naruto is the best anime to ever grace this Earth. Marvel VS DC. High Fantasy VS Low Fantasy. Star Wars VS Star Trek and etc etc.

well, first of all I don1t think there would be such thing as an Alliance, except in name maybe. I mean most of the citizens are nerds, who can't even agree about things in one edition, there is even less agreement between two edition of the same fandom and don't get me start on X vs Y things (like SW fans against Trekkies, real bloodbath)

My other idea is that between really different fandoms like larper knights and anime ninjas are only harsh words, mocking fights but nothing really serious most of the time becuase if that happens then there will be consequences.
But are semi-serious fights in each district between related fandoms and factions, like Choas worshippers against the IoM or Naruto fans vs Bleach fans. Those are sometimes larger in scale and seriousness.
And then sometimes there are real wars, like the Fantasy district vs the Sci-Fi district or UnderCon vs UpperCon

But keep in mind that there is the InfSec and the ICE and they will break up any prolonged battles and the participating factions may or may not will suffer from the consequences...

Maybe the alliance is something in time of emergency? When all the faction leaders decided that this threat is bigger than what each district can face alone? It's a treaty that is to be use only when facing the greatest or most hatred enemy.

well, there is really no threat like that. I mean it's not like the furries will give THAT much of a problem in my opinion, in fact I don't think there would be any threat that could be destroyed only by a city wide alliance.
Maybe some external threat will need bigger alliances but still the people will be divided by various things

In the dark times, when the Con was still young, The Anime fandom suffered many civil wars. From Naruto fans engaging the One Piece forces again and again, the small and old yet still strong Dragon Ball guard joining the fight in order to bring the show back to it's former glory; through the infamous 'Moe Wars' and The Great Waifu Purge; finally to the quarantine enforced on the Evangelion zone. The land of Anime&Manga was not the only one suffering internal strife, but it was here where the precedent was set. The Rebellion, Division and first Secession of a fandom in the Cons history had it's roots here.

Legend of the Galactic Heroes had a small, but dedicated following. Little Tokyo had some use of them, as they tended to produce qualified officers and command staff any larger organized force needed. As a rule, they avoided involving themselves in internal conflicts in their district, though against external threats they provided valuable assistance.

Of course, the peace and quiet they enjoyed did not last for long. They clashed frequently with the newly emerged Code Geass fandom, and neither side was willing to give any ground. Accusations of theft flew from the LoGH camp, while the other side accused them back of hoarding all military power for itself. The situation deteriorated badly, and in the end, the CG followers managed to wrestle enough power and gather enough popular support to make their move at erasing their enemies once and for all.

All LoGH visible assets were vandalized, stolen or destroyed. Publicly visible figures were replaced by people more favorable to CG cause. Their history was systematically erased from public records, and all private files were tracked down and seized, their owners "encouraged" to forget they ever had them. The members themselves were painted as power-hungry and destructive, planning a coup to seize even more power for themselves. Thusly, in popular opinion, they were marked as rebels that needed to be put down.

Just before the elite CG unit, the Black Knights made they move to finish the weakened fandom, the Galactic Heroes, instead of pulling a last stand, did the unexpected and proven that even a wounded beast still has fangs to bear, and you can't kill off a good show.

A sizable portion of the LoGH fandom fled to the tunnels and sewers beneath the city. The move was anticipated, and a contingent of Black Knights supported by some other forces of the district were stationed there to prevent such an event from succeeding. Many layers of the underground were heavily guarded at critical points, and the tight patrol schedule would prevent any significant number of people from escaping. The trap was almost perfect. It'd prove to be it's undoing.

An almost non-existent force was stationed at she shores of The Great Sewage Lake, a massive, slow-moving part of the sewage system that made even the air poisonous to humans. It was deemed unnecessary to heavily guard that area, as there was no conceivable way anyone could safely reach the other side, or bring a vessel with them to cross through, not to mention one durable enough to survive the journey through the acidic goop. As history tells us, these assumptions proven to be incorrect.

The newly-branded Rebels breached the perimeter at the Lake quite easily. Engaging the enemy thorough different parts of the sewers and collapsing chosen tunnels they bought themselves enough time to utilize their plan. Using some stolen technology, they hastily crafted massive blocks of ice, which were then hollowed out to accommodate human cargo. The crude icebergs left the arguably safe shore and barely survived the journey, but in the end most of the Rebels that entered the tunnels that day stepped out on the shores of Sci-Fi sewer system.

Initial contact between the Science Fiction district and the Rebel Alliance was initially hostile, as an invasion was suspected. This theory was fueled by the increasing reports of unrest in the Little Tokyo, as the general opinion was that whatever faction seized power in the end, it would set it's sights on other districts. Thankfully, cooler heads and reason prevailed, and the full story of the happenings inside the Anime District was brought to light. In an unprecedented move, the Rebels were granted asylum inside the Sci-Fi district, and their existence was revealed to the rest of the city only when their position was safely entrenched. Of course, there was still a lot of mistrust between the newcomers and the older members, but a common ground found soon enough alleviated most of the tension.

The Code Geass fandom, upon realizing what has transpired, rounded up every survivor of the until-now enemy faction, and reinstated them as a functional puppet state under their thumb. These action, however, did not went unnoticed by other groups in the Anime District. The brief almost total control over the district and the power the CG enjoyed was taken away from them swiftly and decisively as the popular opinion of them took a downward turn. Propaganda action from the Rebels painted the CG as the true aggressors and instigators of violence, with full list of their crimes presented openly. Counter PR action could only achieve so much, and in the end the CG fandom weakened in power significantly. It is but a shadow of it's former self, though a force powerful enough to be reckoned with.

The LoGH "Loyalist", as they were called by the CG propaganda and the name stuck, with their funding cut as their puppet masters went into decline, soon devolved into a system of oppression against their own followers. Few rich and powerful individuals controlled almost all of material wealth and political power, while the vast majority worked for the benefit of the upper caste's decadence and opulence.

The Rebels have their own share of problems, most notably significant lack of resources and manpower. Their political situation in the district is not one to be envied, as they are still mistrusted and have little influence over the district matters.

Both sides of the split fandom are discouraged from open conflict or even mild political backstabbing against their "other half". Tension between Sci-Fi nor the Anime districts runs high for many reasons, and the "LoGH Issue" might just be the provocation needed for open hostilities, which neither side really wants.

One of the official [Rebel] Alliance goals is to unite the split fandom into one again, and liberate the common folk under the Loyalist thumb. The Loyalists would see the unification done on their terms – the rebels subjugated and bringing tribute needed to revitalize their dying economy.

Even though any visible confrontation between both sides in nonexistent, it is rumored that deep underground in the maintenance tunnels and the sewage system a hidden war is going on. Burn marks on the walls, broken weapons and pieces of bloodied uniforms of unique designs are sometimes found in the massive, underground dungeon. Both sides have uncanny knowledge of the design of these underground caverns, and there are rumors of fleets of iceships on the Lake, and of some kind of fortress or super-weapon constructed by one side or the other.

    //Enter the Players//

You and your friend are both young and relatively wealthy LoGH fans. You arrived at the InfiniCity in the search of your lost sister [if you don't see the plot twist from a mile here I'll disembowel you], who's being heavily crushed on by your friend. Not knowing anything about the politics of the city, you went to the Anime District to join up other LoGH fans, since it seemed a good place to start as any. You had enough money to bribe yourself into position of relative power and comfort, your friend however had to settle for something a bit lower. You have shown charisma, keen mind and good combat skills, therefore you have been chosen to fight the rebellion, while your friend enilsted to help you on his own.

Are you bad enough dude to rescue your sister, unify the split fandom and turn the result into something great, a force to be reckoned with? Are you willing to fight to unite all of Anime District, either by diplomacy or force, so no war would break out and one would threaten your sister ever again? And will that legacy be enough for you?

Who am I? Why I'm Mr Spider, you might have heard of me. Don't get up so hastily, I understand that you're a big nasty man but if you were to touch me favors would have to be called in, and we don't want that do we?

Everyone claims that the Chairman runs the con much like the ringmaster runs a circus but I know the secret. It only runs because people LET it run, the gophers, the clowns, the minions and so on.

What am I you ask? I know you didn't but you will when you're properly trained. I am the man who makes the world click and spin safely and quietly on it's tracks, I am the man who deals the deals that need to be made.

Not for things you understand, things are easy, far far too easy. I trade in that most epheral of currency; respect. While you might be the biggest nastiest man in the UnderCon right now that can change; and it will.

Soon your power will wane, your punks will stop respecting you and eventually someone else will marshal the masses and lead them on to their slackjawed revolution.

Fuck me? I'm flattered but that's only going to happen after you've been correctly conditioned for it, my tastes are rather specific. But in actuality you owe where you stand, well sit, today thanks to me.

That checkpoint that turned a blind eye to you and not those two morons you were running with? Well lets just say that Capt Jonas isn't quite the paladin he'd like to be. Those blades you got at a knockdown price? Well I hear cases of Mt Dew sometimes get spiked with mild sedatives now and then and it was odd you had that bottle on hand for the dealer even though you hate the stuff isn't it?

Is it starting to become clear now? All those convienent moments which lead to your rise to power? All that sweat and sacrifice because of those words you found scrawled on the wall? Well I wrote them and in a very real way I wrote you.

I dunno'; just tossing out ideas.

That could just be one of of the many angles to explore the city from. Dealers and Vendors have to worry about selling their stuff as a decent price to make a profit, partly to keep people shopping with them, but also to make enough money to keep their license and pay for their booth space.

Playing as vendors would also require the acquisition of stock and making sure you can afford to pay some willing guards to make sure your stock gets from the shipping warehouse to your booth unharmed and unstolen.

Likewise, you could flip it around and have the palyers be those guards who are making sure a struggling vendor gets his stock while fighting off rival vendors who are looking to run them out of town.

    PREQUEL

6.00 am, wake up, shower, put on my suit, tie, take my bag, head out the door, sit in my car, drive to work, show my ID to the police and enter. Just another day in the city of colours, and I'm grim and grey as ever.

My friends are jealous every time we go out drinking, they usually introduce me to people with the words: “This is Ian, he works at InfiniCon...” and from there the chances are the conversation will be anything but pleasant.
Either people don't know what InfiniCon is – and then I'll have to explain what it is, telling them that I work with managing a city inhabited by people detached from reality. Pretty much like a madhouse.
Or if I am unlucky people do know what InfiniCon is – and then I have to explain to them that I can not give them free passes or a personal tour and that I don't know any of InfiniCon's rich and famous people.

I hate my job and I hate the city of colours I work with. I'm one of the guys who stay in the background. They say we are invisible, they say we are the ones who are not supposed to be seen. Our suits don't fit the theme. Naturally.

The thing is, our job isn't something people think about, people don't go and think that for every building in InfiniCon that they need permission from the government, so that is where we step in and get the proper permission. We remain in the background, we do our background checks on our citizens. We watch every move, hidden cameras, we spy and watch the citizens, for every act, we counter act to ensure that the real government don't step in and shut down the whole operation. Some speak of a conspiracy throughout InfiniCon, well...
    ...We ARE the conspiracy!

    And this is our story.

    CHAPTER 1

There are several ways to enter InfiniCon, but usually you notice right away. Most of the con is a huge city, so where do I hide? Or actually, where do we hide?
The answer isn't really that obvious, you see, for a lot of people working on the convention, we are spread out evenly. Our main base is under ground, we have a few apartments down-town, most of our guys work with the police stations on the city limit.

You see, at one hand, InfiniCon is a city, it is supposed to have a city council, however it don't. InfiniCon has to account for a city and behave like one, however the citizens has never once shown any interest in the politics, the affairs required to maintain a city of that size.

When InfiniCon was build the first time, they prepare the foundation physically, however by the huge immigration from every kind of fandom imaginable, it was surprisingly few people who took into the interest that the city needs management. Sure a few fractions turned up here and there, but they didn't seem to want to take on the management either.
    >> Unnamed !vDcyU1BJg2 03/27/12(Tue)15:26 No.18478711
    >>18478707
So we were established, the Convention Men. A secret organisation that runs underground and unseen. Our task was simply: Management.

The first issue our group came upon was financial issues. If InfiniCon was to be permanent and self-established, how would our organisation be paid for our work?

Fairly quickly the major convention centre was build along with a few minor convention centres, usually they had only temporary exhibits, people could rent them, it became the front for our secret group, but still secret.

Unfortunately people wouldn't rent the convention centres all the time, so for the rest of the time we organized things in them, giving us another use, we could almost charge whatever we would, and people would still pay. They were desperate. When we hosted them, we could additionally charge a fee for anyone to put up their tables.
    >> Unnamed !vDcyU1BJg2 03/27/12(Tue)15:27 No.18478717
    >>18478711
As most of the city grew in size and popularity, we slowly phrased out, the convention centres became popular in which to announce new animes, LARP events or films coming out.

Eventually it was asked why we didn't just have taxes. We decided we just preferred to be secret instead. The nerds was happy not to know of our existence so why change that?

That was many years ago, since InfiniCon opened, I'm a fairly new employee compared to that, how the system works is only vaguely known, but fact is that our group don't lose money.

The next point was to hire people who knew stuff about city planning. I had a college degree in city planning of one sort of another, and soon afterwards I was given a job offer. I didn't question it. My job description was fairly simple: Establish contact with the government and ensure permission for a building has been granted. It was a fairly easy job. Most of the time someone would call me and tell me someone was erecting a building in the suburbs, I send out someone in a STAFF shirt and ask a few questions, the STAFF people was our most obvious agents, people trust them. Usually the STAFF t-shirt held enough authority that I could get the information I wanted to relay the construction to the Government.
    >> Unnamed !vDcyU1BJg2 03/27/12(Tue)15:27 No.18478724
    >>18478717
Most of the time – that is 70% of the time – the people who construct anything in InfiniCon had the senses to make the proper paper work and hire real construction workers. The remainder 25% they still hired proper construction workers, but didn't fill out the paper work. For an ever growing city like InfiniCon, that was still a lot of people.

5% of the people neither had proper construction workers, or didn't fill out the proper paper work. They seem to have the idea that InfiniCon is anarchy. It's not, we can't let them build where they want or how they want. They are my biggest of concerns. I'm supposed to handle it delicately, our group wants to be secret, so how do I stop their working. Usually this is also where the story ends. I call the police, the police throws them out if they can't afford the construction, they crawl back in and they end up in the undercon.

As I arrived at my front desk this Tuesday morning – cloudy sky above – I was immediately notified of such an event. Someone was trying to build a house on their own in the suburban area of the city, they had begun overnight so it had not been noticed before.

“Hey, Susanne, could you call for one of the Staff guys to come up here?” I yelled for the departments secretary.
“Sorry Ian, but they are all occupied.”
    “With what?”
“Some fat bitch made a jump for it and made jam.”
“Sonnovabitch, suicides are hard to sort out.”
“Yeah, but it still means that the staff is all busy scraping off her blood from the street.”

I sighed and grabbed my staff ID card, we were instructed to venture as little as possible into the actual conventions. I found my parking space and drove off, after 15 minutes I located the house.

A young man wearing a gas mask and otherwise military gear was pitching a tent – admittedly it was not technically a structure, but still it was enough.

“Excuse me sir! Convention STAFF. Mind if I ask a few questions in regard to your tent?”
“Not at all, be my guest.”
“Do you plan to live in it permanently?”
    “No, just for a week.”
    “Why?”
“I had a bet with a friend of mine if I could live for a week with no electricity. I think I can manage that.”
“Okay, thank you. We may come round in a week and check if you are still here!”

Luckily someone had to live somewhere for two weeks before we had to report it to the government, and as much as we knew, people made bets like that all the time, and usually they failed.

Unfortunately due to the morning traffic I had to drive through the city, it was a weird sight, apartments made of bricks, with sheets and colours of all rainbows. And there I was driving my grey sedan with mirrored glass, trying to be as colourless as possible in a world of colours.

I must have not been paying attention because the next moment someone stepped in front of the car. Almost suicidal.
I stopped the car, but noted that I didn't hit her, yet the person fell onto the ground.
I turned off the engine, and stepped out.

    “Excuse me, are you okay?”

A young girl lay in front of me, clearly breathing trying hard to seem unconscious.

“Look, I'm not one for playing silly games, but if you want to play unconscious, that is fine. But you lady, I'm a Staff member, so please don't pull any tricks on me. I'm going to call an ambulance anyway because I'm obligated to do so.”

Someone came up to me, I prepared my standard answer

“Yes, I don't think I hit her, but I'm about to call an ambulance.”
    “Are you a staff member?”
“Yes, give me a second, I need to call that ambulance.”
I pulled out my mobile phone and began calling the emergency number,
“Can I see your staff ID then!”
The person was dressed in a bright blue dress, I just pulled out my card and held it up.

    Let's talk normals, shall we?

I was in the IRC channel talking with Islagatt (by the way, we are using the IRC channel) when this topic came up again. Normal folks in Infinity City.

We had briefly talked about the idea that there needs to be an area for normal people and tourists to stay, but that's hard to pull off when the entire city is full of nerds and fans and obsessed weeaboos and the like.

In short, any person trying to live a normal life at InfiniCon is going to have a hard time because the city just isn't normal. The atmosphere of the place urges people to let their freak flag fly, like at any other convention where people get the urge to dress up because everyone else seems to be having so much fun in costume.

As an example, a normal seeming guy might open a small general store in the city. for the first couple weeks, he might be unsettled by all the people in costume, but maybe, after toying with the idea, he might decide to dust off that old Star Fleet Uniform he only wore once (or maybe he'd go buy one, because he's always wanted one)

And from there, maybe he adds a bit more Star Trek themes to his store. Eventually, he fully converts, and it's not just "Bill's General Store", but "Fleet Admiral Bill's General Store" and he sort of gets into it.

Similarly, even the most banal, anime hating, chintzy chinese knock-off scam-artist might pick up a pair of Kamina shades to wear with his track suit while peddling his cheap shit. He may hate that anny-may garbage, but he can't help but show his appreciation of that one show he tolerates by wearing those shades.

Sooner or later, the City just gets to the normals and even if they don't do it all the time, it makes them want to go out once in a while in costume or start carrying some prop or little trinket that displays their fandom.

(reposted to not interrupt the story.)

This city is growing, changing. Just pops up when no-one is looking.

And it's not the only thing...

I'm not the only one, either.

A couple of Gundam 'Cores' are calling themselves 'Newtypes'. And are backing it up.

Everyone's heard about the 40K 'Core' who can't get out of his Ultramarines costume, but the rumors are he's fusing with it.

And no-one tried leaving Yiffie-land for a while...

All I know is, we need help. Something's up, and I don't like it.

Would it be legal to marry your 2D waifu in InfiniCon? If yeas what if somebody else already married to her/him? Could you marry a 3d one after this?

It would be legal, BUT there would be a local clause to the law that noone must fight over the same waifu for punishment of expulsion.

YOu could kill the other person with the same waifu silently I suppose, until you were THE ONE.

YOu could marry a 2d waifu and a 3d waifu if you religion allowed for it.
YOu could marry multiple 2d waifus without problem

I think they would be allowed in the city but rarely anyone would organize such stuff. I mean for example most of the airsoft larpers would be pretty much into the idea of a guns and ammo convention.
But chances are the convention wouldn't be really normal because the people on it isn't normal either

I think comparisons to Las Vegas may be in order. Major section of the population is transient, huge hotels and convention centers dominating the skyline. Permanent shows relating to various fandoms, possibly live renditions of popular shows by professional actors. Massive storehouses for the annual conventions, holding countless props and pieces of scenery. Megamalls of convention gear and costuming supplies. And of course the outlying suburbs where the Staff and Actors live.

    So, I was thinking.

Conflict between sectors would be common, given Western Animation would fight with Eastern Animation. The streets lined with restaurants and hotels are 'neutral' areas.. Would ConSec or ICE patrol them?

What about inside the districts? Would self-appointed con-gonners take enforcement roles, or would that entirely be put to ConSec.

Or, is ConSec made of people who take the position of Law Enforcement while still enjoying the con itself?
    >> hungarian LARPfag 03/27/12(Tue)18:33 No.18480537

ConSec is mainly volunteers so people from the Con, although there are a few "professional" but ICE is the the place for real professionals. And there are vigilante groups regardless who may or may not help the work of the security forces, some may do more harm than good and others maybe too much into Punisher.

Also I don't think that hotels really count as neutral zone, maybe there one or two but not by default

The Galleria is a higher-class area of Infincon, filled with fan-art of the highest quality and of every type. Preformance artists, filkers, street painters, taggers, knitters, even buttersculptors.

But all this creativity is not without its cost. For every Shepard butter statue that sells well or attracts the Attention of passers-by, a hundred starving, obsessed, jealous, vengeful artisans labour away at their inferior, more obscure and exotic creations. This is true in life, but being in the proximity of so much beauty and creativity, their own, innate inferiority begins to dawn on them. Some are inspired to try harder than ever to perfect their craft. Others slowly become more and more unhinged.

The Galleria used to be considered one of the safest parts of the City. But that all changed a few weeks ago, ever since the...Incident. One of the Artists became inspired, alright. He displayed that inspiration...and much of his innards... for all to see, in a grisly tableaux that defied belief.

Ever since, C-Sec has kept a few eyes on the Galleria, and in the other, seemingly calmer, neutral spots, just in case.

The irony is, his gory magnum opus wasn't even that good.

I woke up this morning in a moment of clarity.

My filthy futon surrounded by a wall of plastic crap on one side and a palisade of poster tubes propped up against a similar wall of comics and books, all in a squalid room that couldn't be more then 90 square feet.

I sat there thinking, just THINKING of how long I had been here.

Quickly, I snatched up my phone, turning over some paperback copies of some sci-fi series I couldn't even remember. I flicked it on and checked the date.

    Three years.

It had been three years since I came here.

I just stared at the date, begging it, willing it to change.

    No chance. It remained fixed.

    Three years.

What the hell happened? How did it come to this? I was happy at work, had a good thing going with some side projects and then I decided to come... here.

And I didn't want to give it up. I spent my life's savings to stay here, to keep living the dream. I sold my flat, my car, I worked first as a designer, then an easier job so I could have more time to do what I loved.

    Three years.

I pulled the hair-covered futon off of my body and staggered into the tiny cabinet that passed for my bathroom, staring into a mirror.

I looked like shit. Unshaved, baggy eyed, pale and emaciated.

What the hell had happened? I looked down on the toilet and saw staring back at me a copy of Nausica: Valley of the Wind, Vol.1.

I took that copy with me to this place. I still remember finding it, in a second hand bookshop so long ago. God, I must have been 12 or so. It's what got me into all of this.

I opened it at the start and read it through. No, it wasn't this that got me into it. It was too pure. The artistry, the writing, the setting, everything, Nausica, shining through the masterful artwork. An inspiration, even to a younger age.

It hadn't got me into this.
    >> Anonymous 03/27/12(Tue)20:45 No.18481836
    >>18481833

I rushed back into the room and picked up a tattered copy of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress and opened it at random.

The humour, the world, Mike and the Professor.

    Old friends.

Not this either. It wasn't them either.

    I was me.

I had to get out. Sell the stuff I couldn't take with me, go back home, get a job again, a REAL job, not hawking plastic crap at similar bastards like myself, spending 90% of what I earnt on the same crap I sold.

Had to get out. Before I forgot again. Before the place possessed me again, so much that I would risk life and limb to fight through a crazed mob of similar delusional inmates just to get a rare piece of tat to sell for more tat.

Still time to leave. Still time to make things right.

    I hoped.

What about Annual Super-Events? Seeing as its a convention city, there's naturally probably conventions of some kind going on all the time. But what if there's special collaborative events, rare events where the fandoms unite, if only briefly, to produce something truly awesome?

Perhaps once a year, there is the Cosi Gras, a Parade of the most spectacular cosplays from all genres and fandoms, with huge magnificient floats dedicated to all things glorious and nerdy, be it a 1:1 Paper mache Gundam or a miniature Normandy.

Or maybe the Festival of Suits, where everyone dresses in formal attire for a day. Like a Festival of Masks, where everyone hides their "true" self, but by dressing in immaculate business attire. Naturally all sorts of depraved sex goes on at night, whilst wearing this casual clothing.

The Infinity Christmas Santa Battle Royale is always a big hit with the tourists, as Santas are chosen to represent each fandom and compete to prove who has the finest Harbringer of Christmas Cheer.

A week later, the Infinite New Year is particularly troublesome, as the breweries throw open their gates, and everything from Romulan Ale and Mead to alcoholic dippin' dots are sold at low, low prices.

There'd be other, lower-key events on the Infinity City social calendar, of course. Valentine's Day being, in theory, a day when shy blossoming geek romances are given a chance to bloom, but in practice often produce many a cry of soulrending agony, when LadyVioletBosom turns out, all too predictably, to be your best mate Chez.

I can't even remember what holiday it was supposed to be for, but that was a parade I'd never forget. The streets were packed, like they always were, and cosplayers were parading down the streets in celebration of something or other..

The big spectacle of the day was the Gunpla society's full scale paper mache gundam float. They had even managed to rig up some limited mobility with the thing, allowing it to move its arms and head.

It was a sight to behold, at least it was until the Anime district parade came to the major cross-section where the Sci-Fi parade was coming from. There was a brief scuffle as marching bands and cosplay groups stumble past each other, then it came rolling down the street... The Sci-Fi district had created a full-sized paper mache Normandy float.

It was rather nice to see the two, side by side, the sun just peaking out and glittering golden rays across them, as if to celebrate their glory. The landing bay doors opened on the Normandy and a picture-perfect squad of Shapard, Liara, and Wrex stepped out. The crowd audibly gasped for a moment before a flurry of flash photography went off...

Then they opened fire. Their guns were super-soakers and Wrex was lobbing waterballoons the size of basketballs. Chunks of the Gundam vanished beneath the watery onslaught. My heart sank as I watched chunks of RX-78's frame fall to pieces.

It's arm raised feebly, aiming its beam rifle at the Normandy. A geyser of water burst from it's barrel and tore across the Normandy's hull, tearing it from stem to stern. In the chaos of the initial assault, the Gundam's float operators had tapped into a nearby firehydrant and their Gundam was now tearing through the opposing float as it slowly raised its arm.

Shit like that is the reason I stay in this city.

Let's talk furries, since they are the universal antagonist. Sure, other groups may fight amongst each other and talk all sorts of shit about someone else's favorite show, but they can agree, without exception, that furries are awful.

Now, whether they wanted to or not, InfiniCon could never truly get rid of the furries. While some may be mild-mannered, many others are sex-crazed perverts who perform disgusting acts in public, which is enough of a reason for the ICE to expel them from the con permanently. They may not be able to ban them for wearing a certain costume, but they can certainly do so for catching them humping in a public bathroom.

For these reasons, many of the banned and more deviant furries slipped into the UnderCon, partly to stay in the city while avoiding further punishment and partly because the dank UnderCon just adds to the kink.

While some furries still roam the surface, their existence is what you might describe as "oppressed" as many regard them with hostility, just waiting for an excuse to shove them into the UnderCon or out of the city. This has led to the rise of some Animal Rights Activists, who believe and encourage the fair treatment of furries.

I dunno, it's the cat-ear earpieces that are bugging me for some reason. I like the idea that furry-ism is regarded as so abhorrent to the Con that there is no 'safe' level of it - the only way to get it out of your system is to completely convert.
That said, the UnderCon is a big place, I'm sure there's room for both. And you're right, clashes between the two opposed groups over how to 'save' the furries could make for good plot.

Their immersion is so high that they don't even need anything more than their controllers anymore. Even though their just hitting buttons on the controller, the drummer's hitting plastic pads, and the singer is just okay; they sound freaking amazing. The music seems to be coming from the band itself and those around feel a desire to start rocking out.

Those with higher immersion may begin manifest lights, smoke, lasers, and firework. Some may begin to think they are rock stars and actually begin to look good in tight leather.

Non of them is wrong and who are we to tell you how to have fun?
If you want to place InfiniCon in a WoD campaign you will obviously have different things ins it if you try to place it in a Delta Green campaign.

But I personally like the mundane/low magic interpretation more because if you go for a high magic one things will easily get out of hand with major plotholes and whatnot.

They could call themselves a Modeling Agency, seeking out talented young women (or men) for lucrative jobs as cosplay models for some illustrious and famous costume-maker..

In reality, they are scouting for specific people who look like a certain character their wealthy clients have requested. So, whether by abduction or the modeling scam, they seek out look-alikes and force them into costume and force them to act like their character by threat of death or worse.

Furries may have a reputation for being perverted, but there are people in Infinity City with a lot of money and power who have the market cornered for shameless depravity.

No Homestucks yet? For shame. You can't go to a con these days without seeing a horde of Homestucks.

One part drug addict, one part cult, there are three major varieties of Homestucks seen about. The first are generally reasonable: they get their daily hit, feed their addiction, and go on with their day. Not at all that bad, really. They've started dabbling in the cult: they know some initiate memetics, but nothing else really.

The second varieties are strung out. They need more, and they can get pretty desperate for it. They're the majority of the cult congregation.

The third ones, they're deep in the Undercon, and heads of the cult. They don't consider themselves human anymore. The horns don't come off, and neither does the paint. Don't ask what the buckets are for.

Make Furdom a flaw. The character has to secretly hide their fandom, lest they be judged and thrown into the Undercon. Should that player come across a wandering furry they have to fight against the compulsion to don their own suit and cavort like hedonists.

How about this? There are a handfull of characters and fandoms that are so widely loved that they have more or less free range in all sectors of Infinity City.
Like Doctor Who. While you're most likely to see The Doctor in the Sci-Fi district, no one will bat an eye at seeing the TARDIS outside a Maid Cafe in the Anime sector, and he's a well known face in Fantasy Land too.

I'm just not sure how a Space Marine would react to him.

Another idea that just occured to me- the Samurai cosplayers and larpers would smile at seeing Luke Skywalker headed their way, maybe hoping for a sparing match.

I'm afraid of all-encompassing attitudes toward certain fandoms, as it seems to just be the authors advocating their fandom. No offense to you or the Doctor Who fandom (I love them to be honest), but you can already see how the fact that we're on 4chan has made the furry fandom a universally hated one with its own section of Infinicon. Try to make it more on an individual npc basis. While the Doctor Who fandom may be accepted in most places, perhaps the hardcore weebs in the Naruto fandom don't want to see them in anime town, or the LARPers don't consider them in proper for their district/neck of the woods and want them out, etc.

Too many posts to reply to, but there is definitely some crossover between sectors and districts. I've seen the Bat-family treated like bishounen yaoi boy-toys that fangirls drool over like they were straight out of /a/'s nightmares.

I've seen the same sort of behavior applied to Doctor Who.. In fact, it seems like squealing fangirlism isn't particularly unique to anime.. neither is retarded fanboyism either...

I suppose what I'm trying to get at is, in most cases, there are things that are shared between districts that are generally accepted, not because one group considers them owned equally by either fandom, but because the fans within those groups are capable of liking more than one type of media.

People are complex and weird like that, but as Hungarian explained, it's a colossal pain in the ass to qualify every statement with exceptions. When writing for these sort of stories, though, it's easier just to identify a character by their largest dedication or obsession. That spastic Narutard may spend most of his days dressed like a ninja and making weird symbols with his fingers, but that doesn't mean he can't appreciate Star Wars and Thor comics on the side... He's just most likely to be identified as a Narutard.

Must be weird to see a cosplayer who is 90% into one fandom show up one day dressed as something completely unrelated. Actually, how much crossover on a single cosplayer is this going to lead to? /tg/ is fairly low-key on these things AFAIK and we cross over EVERYTHING. Well, the extremes are the most notable, but in the low magic/fantasy version, you probably still have a fairly large amount of more casual fans that like a bit of this and that. They could end up in one district or another out of convenience or necessity. Apartments might be a bit cheap in the Anime district, but the Fantasy district has all the book shops you want to visit..

But, as for not heavily siding with one group or the other, think of it like any RPG with factions. Splitting your attention amongst them usually means you are on even ground, more or less, with everyone which means you don't have to deal with hostilities, but you don't quite garner any favor or support from them either.

We could dub them casuals. Those who are split too much to ally themselves with only a single district.

That was one of the reasons the Sergeant kicked us out of the camp. Well, technically he kicked out us from the camp because we were too loud and they wanted to get some sleep, but I think you can figure out the whole story.
Regardless, the Sergeant said that if we eight were awake, we might as well be on guard duty. So we came out into the middle of the field, which were next to our camp and spent the night there, drinking mead, telling jokes and stories, having a good time. Ivan was in the middle of one of his horror stories about what kind of “elves” they had back in Russia, when some people came with torches and everything, maybe a dozen of them. First we thought they were from a nearby camp, maybe they needed urgent help against a night raid or maybe they had a secret meeting with the Captain. We didn’t really care about it, I mean we were more or less a neutral mercenary band (and a good one I might add) so there were no reasons to attack us, even less for a bunch of torch wielding commoners.
As they approached we realized one important thing: they had lamps too. Like electric ones. And that means they were not from the Forest, and not larpers at all. There goes the peaceful night...

As they got close enough that we could see their faces it turned out that they are probably from the Sci-Fi district and most of them are somewhere around they early twenties. Nowhere else could you find such crappy uniforms. At least not all uniforms were the same, there were at least two Trekkies with them, I couldn’t recognize the rest. That’s good, it meant it wasn't another faction who wanted to pick a bone with us, just some random geeks.
    -WE WANT THE FURRY!
One of them shouted. We were so baffled that we just stared at them in silence for a few seconds, I think Tinus even said a quiet “What?”.
    - This is not a brothel, get lost.
I answered finally. I would like to say that this angered them but they were pretty much angry already.
    - Don’t play dumb! We know you are hiding a furry! If you don’t give us the furry we will call the Enforcers!
I exchanged looks with the other. They just shrugged.
    - Look kid, I honestly don’t know what the fuck are you talking about, so go home, the Forest is dangerous at night.
They did not heed my advice and I think some of them even had a smug look at that warning.
    - Oh yeah? Then you deny that there is a person among you who wears a fursuit all day and that you hiding him?
Meanwhile of this he held up something that looked like a modified smartphone, he probably recorded the whole thing for whatever reason he had.

    - Fursuit?
I was even more baffled now we exchanged looks again and clearly nobody knew what the fuck is going on. But at last Heinrich realized what is this all about.
    - Maybe he is talking about Darios?
    - Don’t be an idiot! He is a fucking minotaur not a furry!
    - Well... he did tried to teabag that goblin back then...
    - And “seduced” the drow mistress...
A raised my arm and made a “cut the shit” gesture then with a huge sigh I slowly stood up from my chair and finally putting down my mead.
    - Look, kid. You obviously made a mistake here. The guy you are talking about is not a furry. He is a larper and part of the Brigata, so one of us. Also he is probably sleeping back at the camp.
I tried to put my hand on his shoulder like a friendly gesture but he just stepped away and snapped at me.
    - Then raise your camp and throw him in chains before I send all of this to the Enforcers! You already admitted everything!

I sighed again and gave him the No.2 cityguard look which were reserved for idiots and fools. I don’t really miss my cityguard days...
    - I would love to do that but do you see those wooden walls at the camp? And that huge door? It is closed. And we lost the key. Honestly. So we can’t go back either, better wait until morning, get some sleep think it through again and realize your mistakes. It’s not like he fucked your girl or anything important...
He blushed immediately. Oh fuck, here we go again... Darios will get more than a lecture from the Captain this time.
    - I don’t care about you or your excuses. If you don’t bring him out we will BURN down your camp!

Everyone slowly put down their drink and the night grew colder as we looked at the “leader” of this group.
    - Listen...
    I started really slowly.
    - If you so much as touch that camp we will beat you until you go away. With padded sticks of course because we are generally nice people. But if you even TRY to set anything on fire while here then we will go full medieval on your ass. And just to be sure that you understand: We will impale you and your friends on a fucking maypole and dance around it until we get bored, then leave you there to rot. Now get the fuck out of our Forest!
After that I turned around to walk back to my chair, and that was the moment when everything went black. Later they told me that smartphone like thing had a tazer in it.

When I regained consciousness I was still a little shaky but missed only a few seconds, maybe half a minute, I don’t know, but my friends already had their share of the fight. A chair lied in pieces on the ground, two more of us on the ground, probably tazed, but four of the sci-fi kids were on the ground to, one of them screaming and his hands on his face, next to on the ground a torch. the rest were knocked out for good.
Thank God that none of us was drunk enough to actually use their real knifes and daggers, so they just used their hands and larp weapons, doing what wasn’t allowed on larps: hitting the head, neck and groin areas and with full force. Padding is a good thing but only if you control yourself which we did not. I grabbed my pollax somehow managed to stand up and entered the fray too, barking a few command to overcome the chaos so we can fight as a real unit. It did not take long until we kicked their asses, but that wasn't such a feat. I mean a bunch of half-drunk larper against a dozen sci-fi wannabe who don’t know shit about fighting? If the Captain would see this he would facepalm so hard that a new forest would grow.

Regardless we were the winners, the uniformed idiots all on the ground some of the moaning, some of them bleeding a little or just grabbing various parts of their body in pain.
    - See? This is why you don’t go into a brawl without a polearm.
I said while we smashed to pieces all their gadgets and stomped out their torches. Then I took a closer look on the guy who got the torch into his face. Burned eyebrows, red as crab and he couldn’t open his eyes on his own, but as far as I could tell nothing permanent. Then we poured a little mead on them so even the unconscious ones will awake too, got them on their feet and pointed into the right direction.
    - Get out. Don’t come back. If we ever see you again you won’t leave the Forest, not even your dead bodies will.
I’m pretty sure they wanted to say something, but they no longer had the bravery for it. So they just started lurching away, like some kind of zombies.
    - Ivan, you know what? Be so good and sprint down to the Goblin Caves and tell them that some “drunken merchants” lost their way in the Forest, and they are under no one's protection. I’m sure they will know what to do...

yes and no. The kind tries to yiff anything that moves while wearing a fursuit are technically banned from the City, although you will find them in the UnderCon.
But wearing a fursuit on it's own is not illegal, although chances are people will hate you for it and you will be branded as a furry.

Y'know, I've only been to two cons before. They were the same con, but the first I went to alone and was very confused as to what to do there. The second time I was with some cosplayers but still didn't cosplay myself, and I had an amazing time. Hearing stuff like this makes me imagine those new teens, the ones that go to a con for the first time, getting in way over there heads. Fresh meat. Stay in groups, the security guard says. You're with a few friends, just eating some lunch and consulting the schedule to decide what to do next. Someone asks you if you want a free hug, then the next minute you turn back to your friends and one of them are gone. They could have been dragged away by furries. Corrupted by a LARPer who thinks they're telepathic. The next kid leaves to go to the bathroom and you know it's over. You don't want to say anything, you still have faith in the good of the con. She'll be fine. Right?

And you sit there twiddling your thumbs and drinking Ramune. Waiting.

    And they never come back.

I heard a few story on /cgl/ that handsome guys should be aware too. I think one of the most famous story they have is that someone cosplayed a character from a fandom and there was this not really good looking girl cosplaying a female character from the same fandom. Then the girl effectively dry humped the guy, grabbed his hand and put it in her panties, when the guy pulled it out to his horror there was blood on his fingers, and the girl just giggled. Later the security throw her out

/cgl/'s weeaboo horror stories range from socially awkward to "make a sanity check" levels of horrifying.

If you are looking to run a modern horror game, replace the eldritch Lovecraftian terrors with the mentally unhinged landwhales of those stories.

I think you're mixing together two stories, unless you're talking about a third I haven't seen yet.

    Story one:
    >progresses exactly as you described, but instead of the period blood she tackle/glomped him to the ground and broke his knee

    Story two:
    >guy is showing some chick around for freshman orientation
    >his phone goes off, it's a tune from Lain
    >she recognizes it
    >she goes to the bathroom
    >when she comes out she tries to reenact some scene from it
    >period blood all up in his manly beard

I wish I'd saved the screencaps. Some drawfag even made the first one into a comic.

    Con tips:
    - Bigger cons have better variety of people. Most of the people you'll meet you can have a safe conversation with.
    - Don't want attention, don't cosplay.
    - Don't buy food or drink at the con, it's marked up 200-300%. Go to local restaurants, supermarkets outside for snacks.
    - Arcades, roleplay and videogame rooms are fun. Just take a step away from the airhockey table.
    - Plan your scheduel the night/day/week before the convention. Use highlighter/marker/pen on all events you may be interested in and take note of schedueling conflicts. ALWAYS grab the scheduel errata the first thing you do, every day of the convention (it'll save some confusion) and spend 10-20 minutes to look it over and mark it up.
    - Problems? Find the nearest staff. Don't be afraid to dial 911 in case of emergency.
    - Wear clothes with pockets. Split your money into 3-4 portions (2-3 for spending, 1 is your savings) and have them stored seperately. Spending money goes into different pockets on your body (and backpack), savings are usually stored at your living quarters.
    - Keep an eye on your shit at all times. Just like in middle/highschool, some congoers are thieving douchebags.
    - Scan booths for things you want, then check in with other booths to see if they have that same item for less. Sometimes there are special deals on the last day of cons where dealers will cut down prices dramatically.

    "Strike!" I yell out.

A handful of thumps and whacks were heard.

    "Again!"

More thumps and whacks. The sound of latex on plastic resounded through the borrowed dance hall.

"Tom, your form is terrible. Watch your feet, and how you're stepping. Lily, stop being lazy and actually lift that sword above your shoulder; point it upwards! You're a German knight, not a goddamn Italian mercenary. AND DID I TELL YOU LOT TO STOP?!"

A few groans, a bit of muttering; the strikes began anew.

They were a sorry lot. They were looking to step their game up in the LARP quarter. A few of them wanted to make a name for themselves as knights and mercenaries, others wanted to be more in character and in line with a 15th century warrior. A few wanted to be able to hold up the newbs more effectively as highwaymen. Doesn't matter. They checked in to learn. 12 cards beeped in, 12 seminar credits spent and credited to his account.

"All right, gather round." Time for partner drills now that they've all got some decent mechanics. "We're working the Zornhau today." The drills were mechanically the same, whether the weapons were steel, wood, polypropylene, foam, or latex. "The attack forces your opponent out of guard, controls the line of attack, and keeps you safe, and forces your opponent onto the ground to bleed slowly and ponder their misspent lives." Demonstrate, watch, correct, praise when necessary, repeat with a new technique. Build slowly, watch them come to understand. The two hour class is almost over.

They're all tired. Lead them through some stretches, give them some words of wisdom to ponder, loose them on the con. Tomorrow they'll come again when they see how the techniques work and what they don't cover.

They become effective fighters, I live the dream for another day, and there's another reason to come to the con.

As a guard in the Fantasy district, thing can get pretty fucking weird, as you can imagine. Other areas are bound by certain laws of their fandom. Sci-fi tends to follow the laws of physics and what not. Anime obeys set rules from the mangas and animus.

But here in Fantasy? Ho boy, these fucks have some imagination. I'm not really that big into D&D and whatnot, but I do love me some Terry Pratchett. That's why I became a guard, here, to protect these idiots.

I think, that if it wasn't for me and the other guys I work with, these idiots would be overrun and wiped out by now. I know that everyone's just having some fun, but it can get out of hand some times. I had to rescue a younger lad who believed he had an enchanted sword and had to exterminate all the furries in the UnderCon.

I'm never going back there again. And I'm not going to answer any questions. The sound of techno makes Olivious break down into sobbing and rectum rubbing. Poor bastard...

I patrol the area around the Fantasy district and maintain somewhat good relations with Sci-Fi. They leave us alone, we leave them alone. All's good and well. Until the 40K guys see some alchemists. Then it's purge mode all day.

I knew a guy in the Industrial district. He was a "Blacksmith" here. He just cut up cardboard as weapons. But over there, he's truly at home. I think some guy found an iron vein and they just kind of boomed. Thanks to an old favor I've got me a nice iron breast plate that looks fucking sweet. No swords though, violence is a no-no.

Didn't stop me going to the forest, cutting down a branch and making a baton. I need to quell a situation if it gets out of hand. And 3 pounds of oak with a wizard's blessing is a good argument finisher.

If you guys want, I can share some stories of my time with the fantasy guard.
