    69 KB Hat-Based Setting Anonymous 03/22/12(Thu)19:44 No.18421234
My DM got drunk after a long session of TF2 and Pathfinder. The next morning, he showed me a bunch of notes he took about a new setting he was creating. It was rather strange, but I wanted to see more. The gist is, that Hats grants abilities far beyond that of a normal man. Deerstalkers give one extrodinary perception, Ten Gallons give one improbable aiming skills, Capotains let you automatically detect and purge heretics, etc.
How would such a campaign work in this setting?

    >>18421234
Also, the DM mentioned only peasants and slaves wore helmets.

Whatever tophats and bowlers do, the effects should be amplified by wearing a monocle with them. Further amplification with pocket watches on gold chains.

The Gas Maskers are bizarre creatures lurking in the Faceless Moors. At the price of coherent speech, their masks give them unnatural durability to all attacks, leading to the popular myth that they are not even truly alive. Although the moor is defended by Bowler forces, the pickets are rarely troubled. Perhaps the Gas Maskers are merely guarding something?

Forged deep within the heart of Bat Country, the Bucket Hat holds a perverse and perplexing effect to all those who would go under it. Once worn, the wearer will see the world for what it really is: a grim and gritty conspiracy of lies and filth. Those with a truly righteous heart will take up a mission to expose the dirty underbelly of the world's true form at the risk of their sanity and their reputation or die trying.

The sombrero gives you increased movement, and an uncanny ability to sing folk songs. The only downside is that it causes the wearer to tire easily, and thus might need to take a nap once or twice a day. This hat is favored by bards.

Like feathers, ribbons, or that silly little card the mad hatter has?

Is the Mad Hatter some kind of god in this setting?

What about other forms of headgear, eg. glasses, goggles, and the like?

Do swim caps give you Michael Phelps powers?

Would this mean that by going into battle without some kind of helmet, it makes you either a badass or batshit insane?

Does this also give a more tangeable reason for Spec Ops to wear berets as opposed to actual helmets in combat?

Hats are king, and modifying might make them better/worse. However, other facial wear like goggles, glasses, and monocles adds slightly less buffs.
And yes, swim caps give you increased swimming ability, but gives you charisma debuffs while wearing.
Some helmets are alright and even good, but most are just mundane and normal.

also, I personally like the idea of the players starting out as hatless freemen and slowly progressing their hat-itude as the climb through the levels, maybe even making thier hats legacy items that are awarded to them/chosen at 5th level

I had something like that once as well. In my old pathfinder setting there was a "peasant race" that could only operate given the correct hat for their proffesion, but they could adapt to any situation with the correct hat. The greater races appointed hat officiers that made sure the peasant had the proper hats and that no rapscallions would steal hats for their own purposes.

Mad hatters went mad because of the way felt was made. They used heated mercury nitrate to get hair off of the pelts they were using. I think modern milliners use superglue, because mercury is a neurotoxin.

Anyway, clearly mercury nitrate should be magical in this setting. I figure that whenever it sticks to something it yanks the magic out, but does not store it anywhere, so the magic will behave like air next to vacuum and get sucked into the nearest low-magic vessel. To prevent it from going right back where it came from you need to keep the source covered in mercury nitrate.

So to enchant one item with another's aura, soak them both in mercury nitrate, then immediately dry off only one of them.

    >> Anonymous 03/23/12(Fri)08:03 No.18428870
...Naturally, the dry one absorbs the magic from the still en-mercuried one... and you've got to cook it in an oven to dry it properly, which has the effect of turning it into felt suitable for hats.

In the likely case that the magic doesn't stick around long enough for the felt to dry, you can do okay by putting your magic source at the top of the oven, getting it covered in mercury vapor.

Within the top hat community there were a select few who were able to weave the very fabric of reality into the strands of their fine headwear. This led to the rise of the 'rabbit out of the hat' parlor trick, usually used in conjunction with white gloves that improved slight-of-hand maneuvers.

While pulling a rabbit out a hat is novel, many of those magicians were known to pull much more dangerous and threatening items from the depths.

Few of these hats are known to exist today, the few that have survived are jealously guarded by the Magician's Guild. They are loathe to allow any of their treasured relics to fall into the hands of others.

They were called the Mask Wearers.

It is also said that there was a war between the Hat Masters and the Mask Wearers. Armies of Hatted Gentlemen fought against the dark legions of the Masked Men. The War lasted years but eventually Hats emerged victorious and all the masks in the world were destroyed, never to wage war against the society of the Hatted.

The headwear of the Luchadores has baffled hat theorists for ages. By all means and rights it should not be considered to be a hat, and yet these items have the ability to grant their wearer greatly increased speed, agility, strength, and the ability to take an ass whooping.

Very few of these items are still in circulation today, the knowledge of how they were formed has almost been lost to the ages.

There are rumors about a man who can still forge new masks. It is said that should you be able to defeat this man, he will pass on the secret to you. Unfortunately, this man never removes his mask.

For "classes" perhaps a wearer could "bond" with a certain hat or hat type. Hats of that type work fine, similar hats in the same general category might have a lesser effect, while hats outside that category would have no effect or perhaps reject the wearer outright and be deleterious.

Or maybe not a 'bond' but one might select a style and/or personality at character creation. So for example a tophat would reject you if you weren't dressed dapper as fuck.

The idea is that if one had multiple hats they could essentially be whichever "class" they needed/wanted to be. While that might be fun, it might come with a ton of paperwork (this is my character in a fedora, this is him in a tophat, this is him in a fez...). The only other way would to have hats just give small bonuses or whatever, but that would relegate them to being more like a regular magical item and not something to base a setting on.
    >> Anonymous 03/25/12(Sun)08:00 No.18450959
    >>18450954
    So at chargen you'd have:

    Personality
    Style
(akin to class. Personality determines the category of hat you could wear, style is your preferred hat type and the one that gives you the most bonuses. Perhaps you would just start out with a personality and choosing a style would come later on, like a specialization or PrC of some sort.)

Basic stats (point buy). Str, con, dex, int, wis, cha, if we're going by DnD, but it's pretty standard. Though I think we might want to add some more or split some up. Having 7 or 8 different stats means we can make hats a little more unique, stat wise.

Skills: General skills and "hat specific" skills. Hat specific skills would only be able to be used with a hat of the appropriate type.

Rolls: Xd4+Y, where X is the relevant stat and Y is the skill modifier.

Hats add to certain stats and give access to hat specific skills, as well as enhancing some general ones. They also add "hat tricks" which are special maneuvers, spells, or what-have-you, you can get more of these (and higher bonuses) once you specialize in a given hat.
