Your name is Last Kapernieks, and currently you have an immortal witch.

    Inside your MIND.

Not only that, but you've just recently been murdered and brought back to life (somewhat) by the same witch. The same witch who has now set you to the task of reuniting her pieces so she can be whole once more.

Now you are sitting in the living room of an ex-priest and talking about witch souls, their possible locations, and other related info.

All in all, its been a pretty weird day.

"Any idea of who the witches were that they were looking for during the crusades?" You ask Kenzington.

The ragged ex-clergyman shrugs and takes another swig of a fresh beer.

"Hard to say for certain, most of the records were either destroyed or are heavily guarded. The church may have wanted me to do some research, but even then they kept me on a short leash. I know whoever they were looking for must have been fairly powerful, even as far as a witch goes, the Bleeding Sword sent a lot of people. A LOT of people."
    >> Papa-N !!z0ABcqUnNAP 03/12/12(Mon)17:10 No.18301880
"How many is a lot?" You inquire.

"Over a hundred, which is a lot for the Order at the time, considering I estimated their numbers to be around a thousand at the time."

"It was over a hundred, I killed at least a hundred." Kiara says nonchalantly.

Thankfully Kenzington can't hear her, you have a feeling he might not be so keen to speak to you if he knew there was currently a witch occupying your mind.

    >more questions for Kenzington? Contact the Professor to see if he has any different info? Back to the internet?

    >ahh yeah best lunch break ever

Do you know of any others like your self that were banished or vanished?

Was there anything in your research about heavily guarded areas constructed sometime after the end of the witch hunts?

Just re-iterating shit said before: We don't know how much she's lying or overplaying herself.

    >Personally I think it'd be funny as shit if she were a lightweight and everything last did affected her twice or thrice as much. Might be handy if we ever want to shut her up for a bit.

On a side note, as much as I like kiara,we're being way too helpful. We just got drowned and our mind semi-permenantly invaded by an ancient, possibly malicious force in one day, folks get PTSD for less than that, id be wigging out at least a little bit.

This. Lets fuck up Marco, man. And yeah, he's taking this too well.

I wonder how Kiara would react to all the music that exists today? Classical (and sub genres), swing, jazz, big band, doo wop, all the rock genres, country, country pop, pop (which varies by decade) etc etc

We need to sell the crosses as historical items and buy platinum, which we use to cast platinum tipped ammo. I mean--it's the most obvious. Chances are witch hunters have that, too. And there may be witches who work for the Church, who knows?

Also, I think he isn't undead. Just not completely dead. Death is a process and not a black and white thing. His organs clearly work if he took a sigh, so maybe the witch is just 'animating' him, acting as a sort of life support?

"Well do you know of any possible witch soul locations? Places that were built after the crusades that could possibly house one?"

"Eh? What makes you think they would be stored some place old? No my friend, like I said, a witch soul destroys places they are housed. Any place from the 1300's that tried to contain one would be rubble by now. If you really want to track one down, you would want to try some place far newer."

That shocks you a bit. Here you had expected to find Kiara's soul inside some decrepit old church.

"So would it be a newer church? A renovated one or something? A shrine?"

"Nah, it would have to be more solid than that. The church learned quickly that trying to contain a witch soul was a tough process, its likely that the soul has been moved over time even." Kenzington says as he flips channels.

"Moved over time? You mean it probably isn't in some place old?"

"If it is somewhere old, it would have to be a frequently renovated place, and one strong enough to contain the soul."

The two of you fall silent for a minute, each sipping a beer and watching a Doritos commercial. Who thinks these things will sell chips???

"So are there more like you? I assume the church didn't just give the task of investigating this kind of stuff to you." You finally ask, trying to break the silence.

Kenzington shrugs, and gestures at the pack of smokes in your front pocket. You hand him one and snag one for yourself.

"More like me? Plenty more. Though I'll admit, its been a while since I was called for active duty." Kenzington says as he rolls up the sleeve of his robe to reveal a tattoo.

A tattoo of a sword dripping blood...

Kenzington smirks as he sees your face.

"You didn't think I was just some ex priest, did you? Regular clergymen aren't privy to this kind of information."

"So you're one of the order?"

"Technically speaking, yes. Though like I said, its been a while since I did anything actively with them. I guess you could almost call it forced leave. You see, they've suspected something of me for quite some time. I was never a high ranking member, either, just a foot soldier. Which is why I don't know more."

    "Suspected... Something?"

    Kenzington grins.

"I guess you could say I've never been one for killing witches. Which is why I haven't pumped you full of platinum." He slowly reveals a revolver tucked into a shoulder holster underneath his robe, "But I highly suggest you don't do anything stupid."

You stiffen slightly at the sight of the gun. Its only now you realize that the security six is missing, likely looted by Marco's thugs. The Draco is also sitting out inside your car, as you aren't exactly equipped to carry it concealed at the moment.

"Noted. So why does the church even hunt witches anyways?"

Kenzington relaxes a bit, perhaps realizing you are either not looking for trouble, or are more or less completely unarmed.

"Like I said, foot soldier. From what I gather, though, it has more to do than religion alone. If I had to take a guess, its the power they hold. I was trained to hunt them down, track them, but never given much of a reason as to why. Most of those at my level just blindly follow orders out of faith."

Other than plat. tipped ammo, I wonder if they've thought up other new methods? I imagine witches and witch hunters have changed even in the last few decades.

Maybe witch hunting was broken down into a science by the 20th century, and new tools have been developed? Anti-magic technology? I don't know.

    >>18302136
I guess they don't want witches to have the influence they did in the past. Even without a ton of crazy power, immortality is powerful enough. Imagine being able to pick away at a political system you don't like, and with enough times, you can contribute to the genuine opportunities of making the empire slightly worse or less efficient.

I say we bug out. We've done enough for Kiara now. Let's stock up on ammo, get two side-arms (pistol and derringer for when we lose the pistol), and pay Marco and his friends a visit. Somehow. Without getting in the eye of the law.

"So what made you decide to stop hunting witches? Or I assume you chose to stop, at least."

Kenzington sits back, his brow furrowing in thought.

"I guess if it was one thing in particular it was the rending. The ritual involved in splitting up a witch. Its not a pretty thing, boy, not at all. The Order is stronger and more efficient now, most of the witches they find are between infants and young teens. And I'll tell you something more." He sits up now, staring at you and looking far more serious than you've seen him before, "They don't discriminate, they are equal opportunity, they hunt them all. If I had to pick one thing, its that I got tired of sending young girls to a place worse than hell."

"So the Order is still going strong? Are witches still prevalent?"

"In the wild? No. The Order has gotten better at tracking them by far. We use modern equipment that can pick up on the magical... Radiation I guess I would call it, that witches give off when they use their powers. Like I said, most of them are rounded up and rended before they even know they are a witch."

    "The Order is worldwide, then?"

"Worldwide and heavy in numbers at the moment. Plenty of religious fanatics in the world that will follow blindly, the best kind of witch hunter."

"So witches are evil? Is that why you hunt them?"

    "You're an idiot." Kiara remarks.

"Evil?" Kenzington shrugs, "Witches are just like you and me kid, no more evil than the rest of us. Though living in constant fear of persecution can turn a lot of them to desperation, and desperate witches equals bad things."

    "So witches are... People?"

"Just people, gifted, but people." Kenzington nods.

"Anything else you want to know? Can you read this guys mind?" You mentally ask Kiara.

"Nothing more, and no. Notice his platinum earrings? They do a very good job of disallowing that." The witch says flatly.

You do notice his earrings now. Shaped like a small cross, made of shiny platinum.

"Well thanks for all the help, but I've got to get on the road now. I'm surprised you were willing to share so much, honestly." You stand up and shake Kenzington's hand.

The aging ex-priest smiles sadly and shakes his head.

"Don't be. If you're crazy enough to be chasing after this kind of stuff, I can assure you that you aren't going to live too long. But good luck, with whatever it is you're trying to do."

so, i've been thinking(it's a new experience for me) and realized that we will probably find quite a few witch souls before we find Kiara's unless we somehow find out exactly where her soul is as opposed to searching for a building that gets renovated a lot(that seems to be what we are doing now).

Anyone got an idea as to what we should do with those?

Another thing. If the hunters are smart, the souls will be somwhere in a hidden military base in the middle of nowhere. There is really no need to keep a witch soul in a highly visible building when it can be in a bunker in Tibet.

Dialing in the number, it again is picked up after just half a ring.

"DUDE! I told you man, secure connections!! FUCK!!!"

"Yeah, I'll get right on that..."

"Great! Now back to the locations, I have narrowed it down a bit I think. See the best defense for keeping a witch contained is to have no one around, apparently. From what I've been hearing, a witch can like, get inside your mind and control you, man. So if the military has a bunch of people nearby, I think the soul might be able to take them over, right? This guy I've been talking to, man, this fucking guy. He KNOWS his shit man, and he said that only witch hunters are immune to their mind powers or some shit." "Yeah man, too risky and shit. The more people nearby, the less secure it would probably be. So see these death camps man, these death camps... Oh wait, no man those are heavily guarded and shit... Hmm..." The nut trails off, apparently bummed that his FEMA death camp theory isn't holding up.

Well this is some new information. If he's right, the soul wont be anywhere near where a lot of people are. That narrows it down quite a bit, and you weren't exactly looking forward to the prospect of having to bust into a maximum security base or something.

I mean, if I was the head of witch hunting organisation with ties to the Vatican and its ludicrous funds, I would build a modern prison that would last indefinitely. Plastic doesn't really decay, nor does glass or some metal alloys.

If I really wanted to hide the soul, I would have has her buried in the concrete foundations of something. Or just buried her under a mass of concrete.

"Anyways man, I've got to keep digging to find out more. See, there's this other guy, and he's pretty sure..." The nut trails off, before continuing in a hushed whisper.

"He's pretty sure that aliens from the Andromeda galaxy are in on this shit. See, they can talk to the reptilians using chem trails."

"Yeah, that's totally making sense. But before you do much more of that, we gotta focus and find the soul first right?" You almost plead, hoping he isn't going to waste a bunch of time with aliens.

"Right, got it. In the meantime man, you should start looking for newer places, heavy places man. Bunkers and shit that don't have people in them. Gotta split up and cover more ground, right? See with the deterioration, I figure any place housing souls can't be more than like, fifty, maybe sixty years old."

You answer as seriously as you can with a "right..."

"Also, any idea how I can secure this connection from my end?" You ask, and instantly regret doing so.

"Fuck yeah man! See, if you want to make it portable like, you need to rig it up to some aligned crystals. See, ancient aliens used that form of communication to beam messages to space, and the government can't pick up on that. Its not active encryption, but it should do the trick. Though then the aliens will pick up on our conversations, so you may want to be careful."

"I'll make sure to do that..."

"Cool, get the materials together and I'll walk you through it."

"Right, I'll let you know the next time I pick up some aligned crystals..."

"Cool man, cool. I'll call you if I find anything, you do the same." He says excitedly, before hanging up.

what is preventing them from just throwing the soul into a volcano?

I'm pretty sure that there is technology avalible capable of lowering the soul deep into lava tubes. If this is done secretly, nobody will find it in hundreds of years.

And, I still think that they keep each soul in a bunker in the middle of nowhere, probably in a third world country or a sparsely inhabited area. They might have a few guards immune to the mind control/corruption effect stationed there just to be safe.

Alternatively, they could probably send it into orbit and let it fly around the planet, thousands of meters above the surface or dump in on jupiter.

Potentially sell them then and there if the offer is good enough (20k is a lot of money, and the church may be watching ebay for the crosses they used to seal witches with, so it might be worth it just to sell it for the value of the platinum)

"Sure, whatever you need. I'll send Diego with the stuff if you'd like that."

This pricks up your interest a bit. Diego had always been somewhat of a mentor. He was an ex narcotics officer, spent some time with the Rangers in the gulf war. Your dad had bankrolled him to bust up his rivals, which had helped him secure his place as the drug king of Miami. He was a man of few words, but between him and your dad they had trained you well.

"Yeah, I hadn't forgotten. I might, I'll let you know." You tell him. The anniversary of the day your mother had died, killed by a car bomb planted by a rival gang. Miami had been a war zone for three years after that. Gangsters died by the hundreds before your dad had cleared out every rival group, most by killing them off to the last man.

"What are you planning on doing, when you are whole again, anyways?"

"I don't have enough time to answer that at the moment." She evades.

"Will I ever be able to see you or are you going to be stuck in my head the whole time?"

"Hmm? Well, once I have my soul again I'll be able to reveal myself somewhat, at least I think so."

The small bell helicopter sets down easily inside the hidden field, and the engine cuts. It also cuts off your conversation with Kiara.

You notice quickly that its the right chopper, Diego's personal bell that he's flown for a long while now. If it had been anything else, you would have hidden and readied your Draco.

Diego emerges from the pilot seat, looking exactly the same as you remember him. Shaved head, black goatee, tough expression.

You hop out of your car and approach him, noticing the heavy bag now over his shoulder.

"Long time no see." You smirk.

    "Has it been?" He shrugs.

"Yeah, it has been." You give him a look and get the feeling that perhaps it hasn't been.

"Well, I've got the stuff you asked for here." He drops the bag on the ground, and knowing he isn't here to chat you get down to business and look through it, deciding what you want...

And to Kiara, "From what the priest said, it's going to be a bitch and a half going this alone. If they can really detect magic, then you keeping me alive might be pinging them all the time. We might not have that long before we're on the run- and it's a wide, wide world out there with only one soul of yours in it. Can you think of any steps that we can take to gain the power we'll need to protect ourselves during our search, aside from grabbing guns like this?"

"I would have picked the AR over the AK, but you're your fathers son. Russians and your AK's." Diego smirks.

"You taught me how to use them both. I've always liked the AK more, you know that."

Setting the weapons aside, you notice something else.

    "You brought me body armor?"

"Kid, I've known you since you were a baby. If you've gotten into enough shit that you're asking for guns, then I KNOW you might need some armor."

"Good call, whats it rated to?"

"The plates? .308, multiple rounds. Try not to test them, though." Diego cracks a rare smile.

Opening up the bag of money...

"This is more than I asked for..."

"You know I don't disappoint. Now if that's all you need, I've got to get going. Fucking Colombians are trying to hold out on us, not paying up, so you know what that means." He gestures back at his helicopter and you notice the "fuel tanks" on the sides.

You make a drive to the nearest town, only to realize that this is the Keys and nothing is fucking open past 9pm.

    "Fuck..."

    Your stomach growls.

"I fucking hate eating gas station food." You gripe as you pile out and head into the Marathon.

Snagging a couple bags of chips, candy and whatnot, a few drinks. You make a nice little pile on the counter and plop down the money you had in your wallet.

Heading back out to the 'cuda, you recline the leather seat as you munch down on what was packaged as an egg salad sandwich. You aren't convinced.

"I won't tell you whats in it, then." Kiara pipes up.

You spit what was in your mouth out, and toss the rest of the sandwich.

    "Thanks..." You bitch.

"So we're going to sleep in this... Thing? Are you serious?"

"I'm always serious. And don't call me Shirley."

"What are you blathering about, mortal?"

You sigh and chomp down on a Twix. You are stuck with an immortal witch in your head and she doesn't even understand your jokes.

After a few minutes, bags of chips, and iced teas, you fire up the engine and find a nice quiet back road that you can sleep on.

"It ain't the ritz sweet cheeks, but it will do."

"...Don't refer to me as that again..."

Turning around with a doughnut in hand, you drop it suddenly and lurch back.

"Holy shit fuck?!" You exclaim as you do.

"Err..." You were about to ask just how the hell to do that, when it happens for you.

Kiara peers rather unhappily down at a frilly Victorian style dress, then back at you.

"This is what you imagined I would wear?"

    "Well, I mean..." You shrug.

To be completely honest, you aren't sure what the fuck is going on right now. But you get that you are dreaming.

Which doesn't exactly explain the short, annoyed looking girl with pale skin tapping her foot, arms folded. She's pretty, anyone would think that. Jet black hair dropping down past her waist, looking fairly unkempt. Vibrant purple eyes stare at you, they appear almost glowing, which is quite unnerving.

"I don't even get to sleep peacefully without you here?" You complain finally, at a loss.

Without your mind is your soul just a bit of a rampaging bucket of power?
How much crazy ass magic shit can the Bleeding Sword pull off?
What methods did they use exactly to fuck you over?

Considering how easily either of us could fuck the other over trying to make me regret something is not the best move when this could easily go Mexican standoff.

"I can't argue that, but you should remember that without me, you would be a corpse at the bottom of the ocean."

Well, she does have a pretty good point...

"So if you were so mighty and powerful, how did they even catch you?" You ask as you sit back down and changing the subject, "Also eat the damn doughnut, please."

Kiara pokes at it with a frown, before continuing to ignore it.

"Even my power has limits, I can admit that. I can also admit that while men are greedy and deceitful, they are not always downright foolish. The witch hunters learned over time, though not generally when facing me as they never lived long enough to retell their tale."

Kiara finally picks up the doughnut, gives it a small bite, frowns and sets it back down.

"It didn't take them long to learn that platinum can harm witches, and in a high enough amount it can damage even myself. It saps magical power, drains it. Sorry to do this... but platinum is expensive because it is super fucking rare...They pulled a 300 and blacked out the sun with platinum arrows on her? Also it was the 16th century before it was first referenced, I know churches guarded secrets at that time (like their bible and literacy) but platinum production enough to have swarms of arrows take her out?

Just felt like being a dick about that, back to the story! Ask her about the extent of her powers, what she could do to stop a normal witch hunter, what she thinks we can do using the little bits of her power we have access to with her recently acquired mind.

"So what happens once we finally get you back together? Will we still be bound together?"

Kiara looks up at you, losing the scowl, her face softening.

"I won't occupy your mind forever, and I'll leave the final decision up to you but... You can only remain alive if I allow it, if I maintain the binding. Though if you wish for death at some later time, I won't deny you it."

You sit back in your chair to process that.

"So you're telling me... I'm immortal so long as you are?"

"Correct, I can maintain you like this for as long as you desire. I myself have no wish for death, so theoretically we could remain bound for eternity. Though you might grow bored, and again I will grant you death if you desire it, after I return to my full form. At the same time, I won't require you as a servant forever, I have little desire to rob you of your free will as others have tried to do to me. Though without me you would perish."

"Well there is life, which is why forests always appealed to me. I don't have to drain them of life entirely, in a massive northern forest my magic was strong from the present life. Though other sources of magic exist, relics older even than I, that sort of thing."

"So with your soul being the host of most of your magic power, its pretty strong I take it?"

Kiara perks up, this seems to interest her.

"Very strong indeed. Strong enough that wherever it is is likely decaying at a rapid rate, rapid enough to perhaps even be noticed by those without knowledge of witches. Though at the same time, it could well be buried deep and out of sight, I do not know."

    "Uh huh. License and registration."

You dig it out of the glove box and hand it to him, he takes a look at it and then back to you. He does this several times, and you notice his right hand making a small movement to the pistol at his side.

"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you to step out of the vehicle."

Platinum earrings. Or maybe, they certainly are shiny but you can't exactly be sure.

"Sir, I'm going to have to ask you again to step out of the vehicle." The mustached man asks again, this time gripping his pistol full on.

He has plat earrings meaning he's Bleeding Sword. Slowly and carefully get out of the car and be completely ready to draw and blow his brains out at first notice. Lovely thing about quick-drawing is that action pretty much always beats reaction. If we run our location, car and so on are open. I don't really think he's here to invite us to a tea party so at the first hint of things going south put a pile of bullets in him.

Making no sudden movements, and keeping your hands well in sight, you gingerly open the door and step out.

"I really need a read on this guy, Kiara..." You plead.

"I'm working on it, I'm working on it!!!" She hisses back, clearly angry at you disrupting her focus.

"What seems to be the problem, officer?" You ask, now away from your vehicle.

"Sleeping on a public road is a no-go here in my jurisdiction, I deal with too many drunks to put up with it. Do you consent to a breathalyzer?"

    "Wha? Sure I guess."

The cop chuckles at your surprise.

"Sorry son, just protocol. I'm not going to make you go through the dance though."

"Ah, cool, thanks. Like I said, haven't been drinking, just tired. Nice earrings by the way, those platinum?"

"Huh? Ah yeah, daughter picked them up for me, platinum plated though. Says they look better than my old ones. Perks of being the local Sergeant, I get to wear whatever I want." He grins.

"Ahahaha..." You laugh along with him, until he stops suddenly.
