Hello again. The visit at Mage Academy was fun, but did not end well. I kept the ability of my eyes as secret ( even the wizard couldn't find anything special ). She just said "you completely healthy, your eyes are bit weird but work I guess. I am not even sure if they were healed in the first place. They do not have signs of magic healing. Come back if anything interesting happens."

Now to the bad news: they won't take me in. Mage Academy won't take in every stranger that just happens to stroll in. Blah.
They said I could try to find myself a master, but they won't help me with that. Or maybe I am not just meant to be wizard? I guess I could become a swordsman instead. An adventurer.

Also, I must come up with a way to make some money.

See if any wizards not associated with the guild are looking for a help for their laboratory/store/whatever.

Let's keep trying, do we know of any wizard's operating in the city? I suppose we could just try to ask around the local tavern for rumors or follow the smell of explosions.

I checked around a tavern near the academy. I managed to find a wizard. He did not want me as his apprentice, no, but I managed to find people -who- might!

    - Noel
Wizard specializing in study of runes. Is just visiting here, travels a lot. Might apprentice ( especially if I tell him about my ability ).

    - Nenonen
Like Noel, he travels around recovering artifacts. Dunno about his specialization. He is actually here in this tavern!
He might need someone to assist him in his travels.

    - Nxisa
A counter-mage. Dunno what that is. Actually wants an apprentice.

    - Jan
    'Mad legal necromancer.'
... I might get work involving corpses...

I found Nxisa. She's one of those goat-people. I ask her about the counter-mages.

    >"...You want to be a counter-mage?"
"Well, I would like to know more, at least!"
    >"Wonderful. I don't get many people asking about my trade or wanting to become an apprentice. People see counter mages as bit... unneeded! That's a load of shit. We, counter-mages, have a very important job: eliminating unwanted mages and removing magic from person. Recently amount of rogue mages have increased, and we've been really busy ridding of them and the spells they have laid upon people."
    "Uh, so, you kill mages?"
    >"Yes. Wild mages can be very dangerous, and must be rid off. Uh, we do use magic ourselves, but it's to counter and interrupt the enemy mage. We are not pure robe-wearing, spell-spewing mages. The job requires ability in physical combat. I will teach you basics of combat and counter-magic, and after that we'll be off. So, do you want to become a counter-mage or not? Please, we really need new blood."

    So... Should I become one?

Absolutely. Also, tell her about the eye thing. That we can see magic. I would imagine that ability would be crazy-useful as a counter-mage.

Going to have to agree with the above anon, with the agreeing with her part. I'm still iffy on actually telling people that we can see magic. She can at the least teach us basic magics which we can extrapolate upon to learn other magics if we don't want to counter mage.

agree with the other, seeing magic on a person is highly useful for a counter-mage.

Granted being a necromancer could be awesome too- if he's actually "legal" you could gain the ability to put limbs back on your friends in your hometown!

Daniel is rather good hearted fellow, right?
Do we really want him to become necromancer or a magic hitman?
I'm not so sure about it.
Maybe we should ask those two other guys.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)19:16 No.18126764
    >>18126699
Well, the thing is, is that it's less "magic hitman" and more "police force for wizards." A common phrase is that wizards don't know right from wrong, as they've gone mad with power, yadda yadda. Counter-Mages put down any mages who break the law, kill innocents, so on and so such. It's not like we're joining the anti-wizard's inquisition or something, and if we don't like it we can just leave. Nothing to stop us really from also adding on other lessons from what we learn, after all in order to be a good doctor it is good to learn much about what can harm the body.
    >> Cpt. Jarem 02/27/12(Mon)19:21 No.18126843
    >>18126764
Still, it involves killing those rogue mages.
Killing, not "delivering to authorities" or "draining their mana".
I'm just not so sure about it.

Going to sleep anyway. I'll be back to look how it went down in few hours.

    >>18126843
She never mentioned "killing," just eliminating. I've heard of people eliminating problem people, but that doesn't mean they kill them. I would guess that those who aren't as harmful are turned into proper authority, while those who are too dangerous do indeed get killed. Then again, isn't that the form of justice we're most familiar in dealing with in fantasy games? How often do you beat a guy senseless and then wait for the authorities to get there in a fantasy game, specially someone who's probably killed or harmed many people due to their malicious fault?

That, as well as getting a balanced knowledge of both physical and magical training so if we decide away from magic, yeah right, we could do other things. Fuck, I don't know, maybe learn bardic magic or something? It'd be an option.

    One year passed.

Learned basics of magic ( like healing and orb of light ) and some counter magic. A spell that allows me to disrupt a spellcast and one that destroys barriers. I told her about my eyes. She was absolutely ecstatic, blabbing about how useful such eyes are. However, she told me to keep it as secret. I also learned fighting with sword, but I am not too good she says.

She explained me the current situation too. There has been a large emergence of rogue mages. The Dark Archmage ( former archmage of mage guild gone berserk ) has been cause according to current archmage. The Dark Archmage himself has been avoiding public. Currently he has bounty of whopping 100 000 pien!
There has been other disturbances, like somethingsomething draconian lord causing ruckus in the east.

As for chasing rogue mages, well, I have been not. But soon...
I also learned how to read and write! Good for me!

Did we earn any money on side jobs in meanwhile?

I smell something fishy about that.
I wonder how will it turn out.
Good that Daniel can write and read now.

But yeah, I haven't been making any money since she is only receiving pien to pay my living expenses ( some sort of support from academy ).

I just received a lots of pien ( 250! ) from Nxison. She told me to use it on equipment and potions. We are going to hunt a necromancer down tonight. An illegal necromancer, little north from this city!
    Ohboyohboy.

I still have my sword. I have some robes that have been lightly enchanted against magic, but that's about it.

Get some armor that's protective but flexible, like a jack of plates or a hardened leather cuiress with a thick clothe gambeson.

    Sweet.
Since we're going again a necromancer we should take stuff which will be useful there. Umm... like holy water? Do they say holy water?
Some healing potions would be nice and an armor to wear under robes.

Damn, the lack of a metal helmet really makes me fear for his safety. Back in the day, even when they couldn't afford leathers or chain shirts for peasants, they still gave them helmets. Oh well, I guess there's nothing we can do about it. Let's get some rope and basic tools like a hammer and a pry bar.

Here we go! I don't think metal helmet will do good tho, since it will reduce my ability to spell-cast. According to Nxisa anyway.

Anyway, leather armor and cloth gambeson under my robe. Gloves with metal plates, two healing potions and two bottles of holy water. I am not totally sure how effective they are. I heard they can dispel curses, which might be useful.

Anything else? I have plenty of pien left. Or should I head home? It need to go to sleep for a while. Striking at night and all.

Can we get any protective head gear? It's one of, if not the most, important places to protect during a fight. Even if it was just a heavily padded cap of cloth and hardened leather I would feel a bit better.
