858 KB What do you know, another metaquest planning thread. Codeki 02/27/12(Mon)02:26 No.18117621
Well, guys, next Metaquest is Monday night, so we should probably set up a planning thread so that we aren't fumbling around as much.

http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?tags=Meta%20Quest for anyone who hasn't followed along.

http://steamcommunity.com/groups/metaquest is our recently made steam group.

Here is the summary of last quest.
"Spike and Star-Lord pump bartenders for information, when Fumbles the Auror lives up to his name. Again."
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)02:30 No.18117667
We're still in the phase of collecting information and infiltration.

At the end of last thread, we were preparing to send the Ghost of Gondegal to check out the Robodyne HQ.

There's also a possible plan to have objects tuned to the same phase as Gondegal so that he can carry them through walls.

Finally, we had a preliminary outline of our strike against MetPharm.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)02:32 No.18117687
First, we try to get Gondegal some equipment:
We use our Federation equipment, Engineering Bay, and scientists to pass a tricorder and a trio of transporter beacons through a phase-variance field to phase-shift their quantum frequency to match that of Gondegal, allowing him to go incorporeal with the tricorder and beacons.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)02:34 No.18117695
    >>18117687
That part can be used to have Gondegal infiltrate all three HQ's.

Specifically for MetPharm, Gondegal finds the Three Jewels and tags them with transporter beacons.

X-COM NOVA, operating with some clandestine support from X-COM VALKYRIE (our task force), mount an assault on the MetPharm HQ.

We use the attack to slip a shadowrunner team into the building. They use the floor plan we have and Gondegal's support to hit the Interdiction Field Generator. As soon as the field is down, we beam the Jewels, the runner team, and Gondegal out.
    >> Codeki 02/27/12(Mon)02:36 No.18117721
    >>18117687
Well, on that idea, if our Psions know anything about item crafting, we can have them enchant some gear with Ghost Touch.

Ghost Touch: This armor or shield seems almost translucent. Both its enhancement bonus and its armor bonus count against the attacks of incorporeal creatures. It can be picked up, moved, and worn by incorporeal creatures at any time. Incorporeal creatures gain the armor or shield’s enhancement bonus against both corporeal and incorporeal attacks, and they can still pass freely through solid objects.
Strong transmutation; CL 15th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, etherealness; Price +3 bonus.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)02:41 No.18117759
    >>18117721
    >CL 15th
That right there is the problem.

Abjurers are still lvl 11 and Psions are lvl 9.

We could ask the Techno-Wizards and the Gurus about it, but if there's no magical solution available to use, we'll need to depend on Federation technobabble.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)02:46 No.18117804
We have a Steam group under the name Metaquest. We have about 3 people so far.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)02:46 No.18117807
    >>18117759
For the techno solution to phasing, we should get Data and Egon on it. That's their area of expertise, especially Egon's where it relates to ghosts and ghost-related technology.
    >> Codeki 02/27/12(Mon)02:57 No.18117910
    >>18117759
At minimum we can craft Ghost Touch weapons. We can then have the Techno Wizards analyse them, and learn how to do the Armor enchant.

    Ghost Touch
A ghost touch weapon deals damage normally against incorporeal creatures, regardless of its bonus. (An incorporeal creature’s 50% chance to avoid damage does not apply to attacks with ghost touch weapons.) The weapon can be picked up and moved by an incorporeal creature at any time. A manifesting ghost can wield the weapon against corporeal foes. Essentially, a ghost touch weapon counts as either corporeal or incorporeal at any given time, whichever is more beneficial to the wielder.

Moderate conjuration; CL 9th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, plane shift; Price +1 bonus.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)06:20 No.18119331
    >>18117910
Maybe, but that still takes times.
DnD crafting takes time; we need something that can be done in a day at most to stay under the deadline.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)06:55 No.18119536
    Let's talk about immediate plans.
While Gondegal infiltrates Robodyne, how are we going to identify, approach, and successfully bribe the employees of the three corps?

We should wait a day before sending Spike and Star-Lord back to the bars we visited, this time with a Psion to read who will be amenable to bribes.
    >> Codeki 02/27/12(Mon)08:37 No.18120138
    >>18119331
Even though it takes time, it'd still be a good idea to have it ready for next time. If we had thought of arming him before last mission, we may have had this gear already made.

Even if it's not usable now, it'll be usable the next mission, which is why we should still make the stuff. However, if someone can think of something that will hold us over till it's done, I'm all ears.

    >>18119536
We're on a severe time limit. We have less than a week before this canon breaks.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)09:24 No.18120467
    >>18120138
An immediate solution to equipping Gondegal is to go with the Variable Phased Matter plan, with Data and Egon using the Engineering Bay and the Inde's Federation tech to make the tricorder and transporter beacons phase through matter. We could probably even just use the transporters, combined with the Inde's phasing cloaking device, to make the items out of phase with normal matter.

As for the time-limit, I agree that it's short, but there were two fights at both bars (even though we extracted the Auror before it became a real fight). It'll probably take a few hours before we can attempt to go in again.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)10:05 No.18120788
    >>18120467
Specifically, we first scan Gondegal to learn his phase variance. We can then use a molecular interphase generator and phase-shift the objects by adjusting the synchronic distortion to match the phase variance of Gondegal.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)11:14 No.18121430
    >>18120138
We can also use Douglas for approaching employees to bribe. He's a former PI, so he can probably get the skeavy look going, and his special ability Grinding Social Links could help us in this endeavor.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)11:42 No.18121702
Actually, now might be a good time to determine what VP-98's special abilities are.
They haven't been locked in yet.

Pure Pazaak: VP-98 is extremely good at bypassing security without setting off a fuss, whether it be nasty guardian beasties with keen senses or an extremely complicated encryption system. VP-98 also has a knack for finding exits.

You want me to do what?: VP-98 is capable of formulating a solid operating plan to achieve mission objectives, even if given a mission in an unknown world with vague mission parameters.

Seeker Protocols: Whether it be personnel, artifacts, or legends, this droid can find it and ensure that it gets back to the right people. In addition, VP-98's black box//memory core will eventually find its way back to the command crew, if the droid is lost or otherwise destroyed.

Durable Chassis: VP-98 is now capable of remaining functional in extremely harsh conditions, and is capable of withstanding all known handheld weapons with only superficial damage. (VP-98 would still be vulnerable to heavy artillery)

User-friendly Interface: For some reason, people don't find VP-98 very threatening. Maybe it was a service droid in a past life? Perhaps it was designed to not look like a freaky flying spider-droid thing? Whichever the case, VP-98 does not immediately attract suspicion when sighted, and receives a bonus in social interactions with peoples of all shapes and sizes.

    >> with a Psion to read who will be amenable to bribes

If we do this, we'll need to micromanage the Psion. Load him up with the specific spells we'll use, and his gear. If he gets revealed, let's not look intimidating in NOD armor? (maybe just use casual clothes, or a corporate uniform, or probably be disguised in another way). Don't want Clumsy the Auror happening again.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)11:58 No.18121895
Hey guys, remember the Destroyed Canon entry in the codex?

Guess what two canons fall under that category?

    Infinite Stratos and Invader Zim.

    >>18121825
The Psion has powers that they can use, so they don't have to memorize any.
As for their gear, the Psions don't have the Nod armor, so we'll need to replicate clothes for them.

The main question is if any of the Psions are Telepath Discipline. We know that at least 2 are Nomad Discipline because we used those powers. We'll need to ask MetaOP if the any of the others are Telepath Discipline.

This is the list of powers; make note of requirements that each power has regarding Discipline and level.

    Well, that's just a Code 14 Transport.
Only the Psions that have taken the Nomad Discipline can learn it, and it's still blocked in the presence of a teleport interdiction field, like the ones protecting the Corp HQ's.

I know that we've mostly been getting engineering, magical research, and science Heroes recently.

And yet our mission profile for every world we visit is still to sneak in, collect information, neutralize a threat, and sneak out.

We have a good group of black ops agents, why don't we get one of the best in the business?
    Otto Skorzeny.

We can get him from the the World War: In the Balance Canon.
Or from the Mudazumo Naki Kaikaku mahjong Canon if we want a version that's already gone through rejuve treatments.

Of course, that's if we can handle an unrepentant Nazi on our staff.

    >>18123737
It's an honest question, and I'll lay out the pros and cons.

    Pros:
Experienced specops and blackops commando, known as the Most Dangerous Man in Europe due to his exploits. Very good at what he does, and not afraid to accomplish mission objectives through any means necessary.

    Cons:
His ideals and personal prejudices are likely to bring him into conflict with a number of members of our task force.

Otto Skorzeny, while a talented commando, is more likely to be a better fit for a TG Black Ops hit team thank our task force.

We already employ morally and ethically questionable personnel. However, they are all from Canons where their questionable actions are not well-known outside of their Canon or to Meta-Earth residents.
Otto, however, is a known figure in the pasts of timelines that a number of our personnel come from, and his status in those timelines is well known.
So, on the basis of how well he would be able to integrate with our task force, I'd have to reject his application.
    >> Codeki 02/27/12(Mon)15:11 No.18123868
    >>18123645
We'd be better off having Tosh train some Spectres.
Or, have Data create some stealthy androids.
Or having some of our FFT characters cross train ninja.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)15:23 No.18123985
    >>18123868
Tosh cannot create more Spectres as they require jorium and terrazine, minerals native to the Starcraft Canon.

Data could create some kind of stealth android, but the effect could be achieved by equipping HK-50 with Incursion holo-emitters.

We could train the FFT characters into Ninja, but it would take a while as we also need to train them in the pre-requisite Job classes.

The skills and abilities that Otto Skorzeny would bring to the table are of planning out special operations, and having on-the-ground leadership to make those plans work, adapting them on the fly to changing circumstances.
He has a proven track record, and should not be rejected out of hand simply because of his political affiliations.

I reject him based on the analysis from here >>18123843 which details possible problems with integration with our task force.
    >> Codeki 02/27/12(Mon)15:38 No.18124164
    >>18123985
You don't need the chemicals to simply send some TG recruits through the training. I'm talking about the "stealthy" part of the training, not the psychic part of the training.

Also, on the same idea as the holo-emitters, if we were to wrap it around a few probe droids, we'd have the same effect.

For other suggestions instead of Otto. . .
    Nick Fury
    "M" of MI6
    Batman
    Kasumi Goto or Thane Krios
A few rogues with Animorph morphing technology
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)15:38 No.18124167
    >>18123985
I like the stealth android idea the best among all of these.

Ninja training would be good in the long term. Like Agrias dual-wielding a beam katana and Gurthang.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)16:13 No.18124640
    >>18124164
Well, if we're going to put the TG Soldiers through Spectre training without the jorium and terrazine, it'll still take months to complete.

    Other suggestions:
Nick Fury is still brought up time and again in the Marvel Canon, so getting him would be difficult.

"M" of MI6, you would have to specify which M we would be attempting to recruit, and how, considering that they're already the director of a national intelligence agency and coming to work for us would not be that appealing.

Batman is a major component of many different Canons, and would be very difficult to acquire, and his "No Kill" stance ironically makes him better suited to working for the TSAB rather than the TG.

Kasumi Goto might work, since she's from a Mass Effect DLC, and several paths could end with her dead. But we'd constantly have to worry when she'll leave and abscond with some of our stuff.

Same arguments apply to Thane Krios.

Animorph morphing technology is okay is some cases, but it still has the problem of life-forms being in areas they're not supposed to be if a security sweep picks them up.

Currently Tosh, and to a lesser extent Star-Lord, are our only field commanders for special operations. Nick is the only one out of the listed personnel who could equal Otto Skorzeny as a field commander.
M is more of an operations director than someone who leads in the field.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)16:28 No.18124857
    >>18124640
I still think we shouldn't waste our requisitions slots like that. We should work on the FFT ninja stuff and the stealth androids instead.

Also, given the current situation of TG, we actually have more freedom now. We can do our own requisitions IF and IF we all just agree to get the TG looter team (or two).

1.High Command can't be assed anymore to bother with us. Civil War time.

    2. We can dress up as space pirates and loot shipper and hedonist vessels for stuff.

    3. Get a list of canon coordinates and use them. Go back to previously cleared canons to loot and farm stuff.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/12(Mon)16:28 No.18124860
Alright, getting back to the task at hand.

Next insertion pair is going to be Douglas and a Psion (preferably a Telepath), with an Auror using a charm to make their Nod armor look like a regular set of clothes as backup in case something goes wrong.

They hit up the two bars we visited, and start looking for people having money problems, or just greedy people, and make them an offer.
Doug does the talking, the Psion does the mental screening to identify marks and make sure they're not going to double-cross us, and the Auror is there in case we need to Obliviate anyone as well as to provide magical backup in case another fight breaks out.

That basic outline work for everyone?

    >>18124860
Any specific Psion spells that we can draw up from the list?

....Also, there's a whole bunch of people who just outright ignore the planning threads and just go full retard on our reqs and tactics.

    Mindprobe comes to mind.
Perhaps including a simple sleep charm from the Auror to get a subject to fall asleep so they are easier to probe.
    http://www.d20srd.org/srd/psionic/powers/mindProbe.htm

Problem will be that Mindprobe has auditory and visual cues.

Read Thoughts is going to be the go-to spell, though, because it doesn't have visual cues and can be good enough for our purposes.

Fireman Prime and Metaquest OP outrank me. If it's all right with them, it's all right with me.

What type of stuff are you planning to write about? For instance, I mostly Asperg over the mechanical details - how big the meta is, how x works, where y comes from, why isn't there z, etc.

E.g. in my vision of the setting, the Meta is a really fucking huge place and it's full of crossovers and S.U.E.s, but to combat its fucking hugeness, we have a fucking huge team of Editors. The Meta is divided into Sectors.
We also have Scouts, that scout out unexplored regions of the meta, or run regular partrols on known regions of the meta.
Also we have a Requisitions team, which is itself fucking huge.

I still have no answer as to why the Guard doesn't just use chronospheres/time travel and cloning tech to make trillions of everything and send it back in time to abort whatever bullshit happens.
My current explanation is "A Wizard prevented it".

I'm currently futzing with the idea of Meta-Tourism, and exactly in what ways a selfish person can cause Canon fuckery.
E.g. You can dick with canon-important people and items.
You can import technology or magic into the setting, thus changing it.
You can reveal the existence of the Meta, thus causing the canon to spend a large amount of time trying to scrap together a Meta Transit Drive.
Or you could make the place Meta-capable by giving people a means of transiting the Meta.

The third, I think, would be incredibly common. If there are S.U.E.s, meta-capable factions, and crossovers absolutely everywhere, then it's likely any random canon will have been subjected to at least 5 instances of these things.
And, if people are crossovering backwards and forwards, that would mean that rumors could transit the Meta. The main one? That there is a Meta to begin with.

So if the Meta is, by and large, Meta-aware, that causes complications, since making an entire canon UN-learn something is too costly to do on such a large scale.
What does it mean to be Meta-aware?
Firstly, everyone knows that there are many stories. Being Meta-aware means you know it's possible to send items back and forth between them.
Secondly, you know you're not the center of everything. That will cause problems in many canons.
Thirdly, you know of things out there that are powerful enough to eat you, and they are not always friendly.

    Those should cause problems.

I was thinking of mainly following a small Editor scout/long range recon team with my stuff; maybe some freelancing snippets and the like to help fill out the Codex.

This team I have envisioned in my head is basically the group with the kind of awesome crazy you send out on long-range patrol to watch some of the further-flung Canons and Fanons and Stable Crossovers and do some on-site preventative Editing, perhaps even relaying coordinates for larger or more specialized groups to come deal with stuff (like a Sector Fleet.)

Encounters with Shippers/Hedonists/Fixer SUEs/ other craziness would ensue. It'd be kind of a mostly-serious thing; more personal than a Sector Fleet while still giving enough of a scope to show how small groups would approach a situation, as they'd lack the heavy guns of a Fleet or the hopeless outgunned-ness of the Scouts.

    >CANON ecdyD

Yes, captcha; I'd see if I can work it in... No promises!

The easiest way to resolve those problems is to say "Well, people aren't Meta Aware".
But the question then is HOW are they not Meta Aware, when Crossovers spam the meta, meta-capable factions make yearly visits to the canons, and S.U.E.s and Tourists tend to blab about the damn meta everywhere they go.

I shall now once again say "A Wizard prevented it", and there's a mystical Plothole force in the meta that prevents the majority of people from being Meta Aware, despite all this bullshit constantly happening.
If anyone has a better idea, I'd like to hear it. I hate plotholes and resorting to Wizards preventing everything.

    >chronospheres
Due to the temporal nature of the atoms in these devices, when you clone them in some manner, the new atoms are completely normal making the device unusable and worthless.

    >Cloning
There is only so much mass in a canon. We have discovered (via accident) that when you clone something a trillion times, it has a nasty habit of making the universe hate you. Any of those gate clones/time paradox duplicates are extremely unlucky. Normal clones, however, have the issue of muscle deterioration and mental instability. For some unknown reason, we believe this has to do with the problem of cloning souls as well. More testing is needed.

How about just make it so each canon has a limited auto-repair function? Like once the crossover elements or the SUE is removed, it quickly becomes erased from history. In essence, it 'unhappens'.
Minor breaches are unhappened almost immediately after the foreign elements leave.
Of course, it's unwise to visit too often else the 'immune system' is weakened.
And forming unstable time loops with Chronospheres often splits the timeline of the canon and weakens the meta as a whole, which is why they are used very sparingly.

Rubber band principle? Each canon will try to correct errors on it's own, by changing small things to work. If you pull it a little, it goes back to normal. If you pull it alot, it breaks and needs to be repaired.

    So, wizards are responsible for:
#1. Guard doesn't have unlimited resources, despite its access to cloning and time travel
#2. Despite the frequency of meta fuckups and the amount of factions with meta knowledge, knowledge that the Meta exists is quite rare inside the canons.
#3. Nobody's strapped a Von Neumann grey goo type thing to a meta drive (yet?).

There's also the chicken-and-egg thing. The Guard got knowledge of draining the essence of a canon from someone, and also learned enough of the Meta to reliably transit it from someone.
    Who was that someone?
And where did THEY learn it?

You can learn of the Meta, and build a Meta transit drive, without essence of plothole. There are many ways to transit the Meta. It's likely that Meta-Earth was attacked by someone using old technology, and we used the old technology to FIND the creativity drainer from some crazy motherfucker in some random canon.

But if you can FIND those things, why aren't the TSAB fielding Reality Emitters & Essence of Magic against us?
Why don't the Firemen or the Closers or Hyper-Carthage have Grimdark Emitters?
    ... Maybe they do ...

And if that's the case, then it's likely that factions more Evil than us are deliberately sacking canons to drain all their essence to fuel their own Rewriter Bomb-type things.
    Where are these Evil factions?
Perhaps pretty much everyone in the Meta said "No, fuck your shit, you die now" and dogpiled them. That would work.
That would mean the Meta hates draining the essence of a canon.
Is that why Black Ops keeps it so secret? Because we'd be zerg rushed if found out?

    Many questions.

It was established in the original setting creation threads that Canons have a limited auto-correction force.
People will forget things and SUE's once they are gone. As long as a plausible explanation exists for a given thing, the explanation which fits the Canon is the one that the Canon Natives will accept more readily than anything concerning the Meta.

As for Chronospheres, they only work within a given Canon's timeline. The reason why they don't work as well is because of the Many Worlds interpretation of Meta-Quantum Theory, which allows for a divergent timeline to emerge once time travel is involved. Except in cases where the timeline has reached the limit of divergence, when you go back in time, you create a divergent timeline and that's what you change, not the one the needs to be fixed.
That's why Rewriter Bombs are used.

I think the explanation for the lack of Chronoshpere spam would be due to temporal fugue, recursion, the Grandfather Paradox, the Butterfly Effect, or more likely a combination of multiples of the aforementioned.

Meta-Tourism is something that I could see happening IF you were careful about it. There are any number of beautiful places all over the setting that people would love to see and experience and would be perfectly safe to do so IF they followed guidelines. Like "THE META DOES NOT EXIST. YOU ARE SILLY CRAZY PERSON HA HA HA". It'd probably be an involved process to get cleared for it, but no more burdensome than modern-day airline security. Just arrive a bit early so you can get scanned and sorted out before you go, and have a nice trip! But like you said, there's serious potential for contamination, so I'd assume anyone who Meta-Tourist'd would have to have a tracking device or something implanted or worn or something.

I personally see Meta-Awareness as a learned understanding that the Parallel Worlds theory is true, and you can view it as a mix between an interconnected web (canon stability, and paths for possible connections for natural Crossovers spinning into their own Fanons) and a wind-chime (all these Parallel Worlds are linked to a single point that can access them all, conveniently referred to as "The Meta".).

Worlds with multiple planes would have inhabitants that could grasp the simple parts of this concept quickly enough, but are more likely to be less technologically capable of exploiting it leading to being able to just smear campaign them into crackpot obscurity. Worlds that are more technologically advanced would have a harder time wrapping their heads around the concept because "Our science disproves the Parallel World Theory. Ha ha ha ha!"

It is when these checks and balances are violated that a non-Meta individual, group, or Canon can become Meta-Aware.

I see a lot of possibility for there being "Hub" worlds. Worlds where the canon is over, or where the canon is meta-aware by default, or where the entire canon doesn't give two shits about branching into the Meta.

These places are a hotspot for Tourism.
The major meta-capable factions would like to keep them a "Neutral Zone", but there have been arguments. For example, the Guard wants to extradite smugglers, but the other factions don't want the Guard going in and arresting people based on the Guard's own laws. Attempts to make some sort of "Intermeta law" have backfired and often resulted in fistfights breaking out in the assembly room.

Maybe each Hub has its own set of laws, based on whichever faction has the greatest control of it?

Also, found a relatively easy way to explain why there are no meta-capable Von Neumann grey goos, why there aren't any Rapid Megadraining Ultracrumplers, and in general why nobody's turned the Meta to ashes with exponential expansion or doomsday weapons yet:

Every time you try, pretty much everyone with the power to stop you comes up, says "No", and you die.
There are MANY extremely powerful canon-native things that are perfectly happy chilling out in their own house, but if you somehow built a Fuck-the-meta machine, they will get pissed off at you and kill you.

The Hedonists would probably be a major player in this. After all Meta-Tourism would greatly appeal to them as they could indulge their vices more readily than they could in MetaEarth proper. Slave trade, every kind of depraved act you can imagine.. It'd be a dream come true for them especially if they have access to Meta-capable vessels/transport. I assume the Guard doesn't do that, because if they start riding the exponential so overtly, they become everyone's #1 target.
I mean, we COULD go to every canon that says "On Earth, x happened, and nobody watched anything outside our solar system", and colonise the entire goddamn universe in all of its billions of billions of worlds.

Another reason we don't do that, is because we're NOT conquerers, we're stability agents, so we don't really NEED a billion billion billion worlds' worth of resources.

On the Von Neumann grey goos. . .

There was one. Only one. It destroyed that sector of the canon and still, today, nothing new comes from that corner. We had used everything in our power to prevent it from spreading. Fortunately for us, it required a large amount of time. Time we used for research. To prevent it's spread, we devised a way to removed canons before it could get to them. To fight back, we used those canons we removed to make bombs. It cost many lives, and thousands of destroyed canons, but we beat it back and killed it.

True. The Guard would do fuck all to stop them since as long as a slave isn't canon important, shit's A-ok, and the TSAB would want to go in and start robusting perverts, but the Guard would oppose it.

Remember: It matters not whether something is evil or good, it matters whether it fucks with the Meta.

There are three ways the Hedonists/Shippers can fuck with the meta:
    A. By interacting with important canon items and characters, kidnapping/hurting/pestering them.
    B. By housing Smugglers, S.U.E.s, and those who wish to enact destructive fetishes upon other worlds. Even if said people aren't actively causing harm at the time, they likely will in future.
And there's a 3rd reason why the Guard would attack them:
    C. Even if it doesn't violate the canon, forcing your fetishes upon other people (whether physically via rape, literally by giving them the fetish via magic, or just by spamming and being obnoxious) ain't cool bro.

However, ordinary people (i.e. not Canon-important, not S.U.E.s) sharing their interests with other ordinary people is perfectly fine.
    >> MetaQuest OP 02/27/12(Mon)22:45 No.18129302
My explanation for why you don't use X supercool gamebreaking device to break the game is because the laws of physics are subtly different in many Canons. A Chronosphere might work fine in Red Alert, but try it in the World of Darkness and watch people laugh as the machine rips itself apart. A supertech nanogoo manufacturer may work fine in a cluster of say, 20 canons with similar makeups, but try to field it on Krynn and the complex technologies involved in the nanotech suddenly cascade-react into dust.

I wish I could say more, but I think it'd give you too much of a clue to one of the plot points that will be coming up. The in-game explanation is that the more advanced, either magical or scientific, a thing is, the more limited the number of Canons that can accept it.

But I'm glad to see you've been wondering on these things. Many mysteries are intentional. All questions answered in time.

...and if my plot-linked explanations end up sucking, my apologies in advance.

    Anyway, back to writing.

On the subject of colonizing other worlds, would MetaEarth have branched out into their own universe using their access to the best techniques for stuff like colony creation, FLT travel, terraforming, and such? Maybe fielding a few Dead Space Planet Crackers to harvest some of it's own massive universe of resources to fuel itself...

Because there's no way one planet is going to supply the whole of the Guard/Institute, since the mandate for not taking things or amounts of things that can disrupt a Canon is one of the primary goals of the Editors.

Those could also serve as Meta-side Hub Worlds.. Or giant Renaissance Fairs or Cosplay playgrounds or such. And yeah, I am kinda channeling that one setting /tg/ made talking about the cosplay one there.. IT'S ALL CONNECTED, RECURSION, etc. Hehehe.

Shit's only bad when you start bringing your bullshit into other canons.

So between the 10 million worlds we own, the billion that we have small bases, recruiting offices, or scouting outposts on, and everything the ~million or so Looting teams dredge up, we have resources.
Not enough to completely lock down the entire meta, but enough that we CAN reliably fight off threats.

Here's my take on Meta transit drives:
When hopping between Canons using one of these, it will put you in a place 'most similar' to where you are when you used it.
e.g. if you use it when you're in an aircraft, you end up in the air.
if you use it in a spaceship, you end up in space.
if you use it in a city, you end up in a populated area.
if you use it underground, you end up in a cave or a mine.
    Stuff like that.
If the Canon you're jumping to lacks one of these things (e.g. no populated areas, or no space), it'll just fling you into the closest equivalent.

However, if you jump to the Void Between Worlds, then you are in for some shit.
Try to jump to a place where there is no canon to jump into? You don't end up in the hard vaccuum of space. You end up in NOTHING. A place where the laws of physics don't exist, so all those nifty things holding your space ship together just went oopsie and you un-happened.
This is why we don't make a jump when someone's jamming our Meta transit drives, and why spooling the drives too often is a bad idea.

    How is that possible?
I mean if terrible fanfiction for Invader Zim is still being made, then logically it can't be dead can it?
Isn't that a sign that a Canon is still alive, that there are outgrowths of fanon and 'what-ifs'?

The main canon hit a dead end. There was nothing in the series on what happens in the future and it was canceled.

Everything after that point is considered "abandoned" and is up for grabs for looters.

    Fan fictions don't count.

Mapping the Canon is a tricky process. There are more directions you can move in than your standard Up/down/left/right/forward/back. In fact, as far as we can tell, there is no set number of dimensions.
Also, going West then North, gets you to a completely different place than going North then West.
The only real constant is that if you backtrack your steps - exactly - you end up where you started from, and that the LEAST DISTANCE between the centers of two canons is the same regardless of your reference point.
Mapping a truly arbitrary set of directions, distances, and nodes is a mindfuck for any human - but Computers can handle abstract mathematical concepts and node graphs easily.
That is how they can very quickly navigate from one point in the meta to another, and how it's quite difficult to get lost as long as you're in a mapped area.

Mapping new areas is somewhat tricky. The issue is, you don't know exactly WHERE a canon may be. You just send out a spam of meta probes, with "Retrace your steps and jump back to me" instructions, and if they survive, then you found a canon. Might be a new path to an existing canon, might be a whole new canon! Yay!

Research is underway into some means of "Viewing" the meta, so you can "See" nearby canons, but has not yet bore fruit.

There's a select few who can enter that sort of viewing-world it seems.

The other issue I want to bring up is "More looting in the Darkness Beyond Time". Whether regards to legality/safety whatever.

This means that the Meta can never be 'entirely mapped'. There's always the possibility that in the infinite amount of paths you haven't taken, someone stuck a canon in one of them.

Fortunately, the user interface for Meta transit drives is easy.
You can put "Essence of Plothole" on any navigation equipment - even a human eye or human hand - and then the navigation equipment gets a Meta option.
Typically, Meta drives use a text parser on a computer, because text parsers can handle more directions than up/down/left/right/back/forward easily. Just invent new words for each direction.
Then you plug in, say, "12 north, 7 left, 3 counterclockwise, 2 dennis, 9 anti-skub", and off you go.
Though, some crazy motherfuckers like to put essence of plothole directly into their MINDS, and just MEMORISE the shape of the meta.
The human mind is NOT the best tool at memorising maps. Most of these insane motherfuckers are presumed lost. But there are some out there - guides and pathfinders - that can navigate through the meta by thinking about where they need to go and how to get there.

Timeline shows that in the 2020's MetaScry technology was developed. By the 2030's, MetaScry technology had allowed the United Nations Bureau of Postplanar Investigations to secretly view and copy technologies and design schematics from Canons.

So the technology to surreptitiously peer into Canons has existed.

Also regarding our forces... in general maybe have them willing to offer suggestions/advice more often? Like it doesn't even have to be always correct, but we shouldn't need to order Tosh to use that psionic shielding or whatever, he should have the sense to do it on his own.

I try not to do that in my side of things because I'm worried that if I auto a character's actions, that's just me playing with myself, not the players playing the game.

It's why I give you y/ns on "Obviously y" choices, and ask if you're changing your usual tactics repeatedly.

I'll allow the players to opt to Hire a tactical minded person, let him figure it out, roll the dice until we reach the end. But it's not my favored option. It's also why I try to railroad the players into taking less forces than they could; anything where there is no challenge and you're simply attackmoving from loot box to loot box is boring.

It's ALSO why I throw random NPC interaction at the players, even though they have perfectly capable talkers with them, to give the players a chance to say their stuff.

If you want to Cheese the everliving fuck out of it, you can hire a diplomat, a tactician, and a hero reknowned for creativity and intuition, say "Right, you 3, do everything for us. We'll speak up if we have input", then watch as I auto a thread.
But if you do that, I WILL rename the quest to Call of Looty: Meta Warfare.

The MetaScry technology as described is several decades old.
It was enough to allow for the BPI to construct macro-fabricators to build its bases in the Meta (or it could be a typo).
So that implies the ability to find the coordinates of Canons near the MetaScry origin point.
The prevalence and need for Scouts could imply that the MetaScry technology has a limited range, and given that it required the LHC to first penetrate the Meta, that the power requirements and infrastructure needed makes using Scouts with Meta Transit Drives to be a more cost-effective solution.

For further information you'll need to contact the people actively working on the setting and Codex.

That being said, I'll try to up the "AI" of your units more.

My only real problem with writefagging is the time-sink. I have a long list of shorts and scenes I've been meaning to write, but simply have had difficulty finding the time to complete up to my standards while also managing the quest proper.

If people want me to, I can re-allocate a bit more time to writing from quest-managing. Say, 25%?

Or I can do what I'm going to do tonight, dedicate a thread to writefaggotry instead of questing.

Current compilation of long term and immediate-term plans from Steam group chat:

    LONG TERM TG PLANNING:

    1. Return to Ebon Night World. Unseal the last 2 shoggoths in Antarctica. Send in the Securitrons to fight them.

    2. Return to 8-bit Dystopia. Look for spacecraft to loot.

    3. Research "small meta ships".
3b. Outfit ISDs and smaller ships and VF-25's with meta drives.
3c. Dress up as Space Pirates, raid Shipper and Hedonist ships for stuff.

    4. Research combat androids c/o Data. Possibly buy a Busou Shinki and upscale her.

    5. Acquire TG Looter Team

    6. Acquire Zolomon Ringo/David Lister/Elaine

    7. /tg/bein or /tg/quarion

    8. Combine data of destroids and battlemechs. Implement gradius/arwing/macross tech to create a tricked-out Destroid

    Cheyenne TG-custom.
    IMMEDIATE PLANNING DURING THIS MISSION:

    1. Char trains with the X-Com for combat precog

    2. Gunstar pilot goes through Itano Circus from Hell training. Load up in one of the ISDs, go back out a light-week, and have them train out of sensor range of 8-bit Dystopia. Go vertical relative to the galactic plane. Like, above the worlds and shit.

Another brainstorm / idea rehash from the Steam chat.

"We research small meta ships, then send runners out to the other sectors. We can set up supply runs and stuff, since we had the foresight to get a Creation Engine. In return, we get delicious goods and services from their sectors."

With Requisitions blown half to fuck from that nuclear firestorm earlier? If they come at us about it, tell the truth: We're doing this so Requisitions can focus on getting back on their feet. What we'd be doing is basically a stopgap measure to keep other sectors from having an Ebon Night moment then suddenly they have nothing to work with and their sector spirals out of control.

We're not pretending to be Requisitions 2.0. We're acting like concerned Meta Operatives who happen to be able to help in a bad situation. Requisitions getting nuked was a major blow, and the Guard's gonna need help recovering as fast as possible.

Alright, so we've got a laundry list of stuff to do:
    1. Set up the identified building as a replica of the Wily Corp HQ using the floor plans we have.
    2. Advanced scans of the Dig Site to identify adjoining tunnels we can snipe from and to determine what buildings are there.
    3. Get doses of the virus prepared for deployment.
    4. Contact Light, ask him what his operative was able to get from MetPharm.
    5. Get Data and our X-COM Engineers working on an Incursion upgrade for VP-99, 98, and HK-50.
    6. Have Mouse begin snooping around the Wily Corp network.

We also need to set up the MetPharm strike with X-COM NOVA, so we need to start dropping our X-COM VALKYRIE messages.

The only place that it might be useful to sent Gondegal now would be the Dig Site. He is still a medieval character, in a high-tech world. He wouldn't be able to identify the interdiction generator or the power generators at the Corp HQ's.

Hmm. Could they put an anti-technology hex on him somehow? Or have Cheryl glare into the scrying pool and use her powers to start frying power sources or something. Before we do anything with Eggman's stuff, Metal Sonic has to be disabled somehow. We barely pulled off a victory against a space/time altering shoggoth; which was pretty much beastial instinct... We're gonna take serious casualties if we go against a speedster in the class of Sonic with a robotic intelligence that can keep up with that kind of movement.

As far as contacting the X-COM group here, we should do it. Because we could theoretically let this canon wrap up to however far it developed, then come back and get them; thus adding more X-COM guys to our forces. Or do you guys think it'd be too much of a disruption even after the developed parts of the setting are over with? Because if it's not.. Perhaps we can get Dr. Light as well; if he'd be willing to go. He would be a huge boost to our A.I./Robot/Android development program if we can get him. As well as developing technologies for them and to work into our existing Power Armor forces like the MI, KI, and Fallout armors...

You think Metal Sonic being FAST is our biggest issue? We don't want it anywhere near our tech. It can scan anything it comes in contact with, upgrade itself using the data it finds, and integrate it into its systems.

This thing is his Ultimate weapon. It's smart, fast, and supremely adaptable. It has the ability to become invulnerable at will, can perform Chaos Control if it has an emerald, and can evolve into many different shapes. If we fight this thing, we HAVE TO destroy it, leaving no traces for Eggman to reverse engineer into his next version.

Because we might not be able to get him with a photon torpedo teleport trick (even clearing Eggman out somehow. And I don't want to think about him copying one of those things.) He's got a rocket for flight, so levitation isn't going to do any good...

Godengal might be the key to this fight. Can he turn corporeal at all? Like, concentrate himself into his hand or something? Because if he can, maybe we can get him to ghost through the machine and start tearing out things. Hell, can Metal Sonic copy a ghost's abilities?

I hate to say it, but this might be where we have no choice but an orbital strike. Reality Emitters wouldn't help here, since this is a canon ability of Metal Sonic's. Oh dear, oh dear. I... guess.
But is it really okay for us to just go all out and cripple all three megacorps?
I suppose there's a chance that once we remove Dr. Grimm, the world will 'heal' itself to some degree, but still.

Here's our basic plans so far:

He wouldn't be able to identify the interdiction generator or the power generators at the Corp HQ's.

    a. Get Mustadio a TR-116 with Exographic Targeting Scanner and Micro-Transporter Module. He's an Engineer whose weapon focus was guns; see if he can still pull off some of his skills with this weapon.
    b. the Gavs can work with Data to do the Incursion upgrades, which will free up the X-COM Engineers for renovating the mock-up building.
    c. Get the Aurors, Farseers, and Psions to scry on the MetPharm, Wily, and Robodyne high security areas, see what kinds of defenses are in place and have the shadowrunners watch so that they can see the kinds of defenses they'll be up against.
    d. Test Explosive Runes to see if a robot reading them is enough to trigger them. Use the captured Sniper JOE and Robodyne caterpillar. If so, have the Abjurers begin preparing stickers of Explosive Runes.

Prepare remote network uplinks to allow Mouse and Data to hack the Corps' computer networks once the strikes begin.
Prepare contingencies: 1. polymorphic virus, 2. EMP grenades, 3. Thermite charges.

We also may wait until Light and his Resistance are about to launch their own attacks on the Corps, and use their attack as a cover for ours.

Finally, we need to finalize VP-98's Special Abilities.

I'm almost done with the Agrias thing, but it's a whopper. Should be ready by 9.

How long would it take to send a ship back to base to tell them about this? A rogue high ranking member of the Guard would be something blackops might like to know about, and maybe even help with.

Can we send a message along with that transport craft we used to send the host of deadliest scientist back to base?

You have the All Under Heaven and the Storm with Meta-drives. No other craft with you. That shuttle was from the base, and it's not there anymore.

Deadliest Scientist stuff is during the two week break period we had following the Ebon Night Horror Show. This is delayed time writefaggotry he's writing.

Also, my vote is Seeker Protocols / User-friendly Interface for VP-98. Good probe droid. Niiiiice probe droid. He helped a lot during Tokyo before he got scragged by Griffith's Apostles. He needs to serve this function more. From now on, I suggest that if VP-98/99 are deployed in urban areas they get relevant paint schemes to support their "experimental high-risk area scout drone" cover story. It works well enough.

If we can get a ship to base in less than a day, we should definately send one to get any reinforcements they can spare, and tell the various revenge seeking factions about doctor grimm, so we can get some free backup.

Would sending the all under heaven to base to relay information impact research and production noticeably, or are our major research facilities on other ships?

I just hope requisitions isn't going to decide to count anything that comes to help with grimm against us when we ask for more equipment.

In the crazy crossover world we used a gas leak warning to great effect, maybe we could create a similar diversion by sabotaging a chemical storage facility, gas pipeline, factory, power supply system, water supply, or maybe even the lemmings.

I made a similar proposal to do that, to set off explosions across the city as a diversion?

Someone shot that idea down and said it would set off a high alert.

Why would your idea NOT raise a high alert?

I was thinking more along the lines of "industial accident" than "tarrorist bombings", but it could still raise suspicions. Let's stick with being quiet for now, maybe prepare some "Industrial accidents" as an escape aid for later, once we have the contaminants.

we're planning on getting Zolomon Ringo and possibly others from Zeonquest to operate our /tg/bein. We also planned on getting a Looter team for our own requisitions. That aside, we have some other characters in the works, for example Kevyn Andresen from Schlock Mercenary and Nikola Tesla from Atomic Robo for added SCIENCE!

We also have PROXY from Star Wars the force unleashed to assist with training and possibly infiltration.

There's also been recurring suggestions for Giles from Buffy and Zero from Megaman, but one is somewhat redundant and the other is likely difficult to obtain due to canonical issues (although we might be able to use the PWP loophole and nab him from a pocket universe-perhaps stop by his resting sport before the Zero series and copy his personality to fix any issues that come from such an origin).

And in this very thread, we have...Otto Skorzeny, from IRL. Who's probably the most redundant suggestion ever.

The problem we have right now is that requisitions is about to shut down for God-knows-how-long.

    How about this guy?
He's a very skilled scientist and mage with thousands of years of experience and isn't a slouch at combat either.
Sure, he was a villain in his original canon, but considering that his motivation was essentially wanting to see new worlds and experience new things, I don't think that will be much of a problem.

The way I see it, the more scientist-types (especially scientists good at magic) we have, the more SCIENCE gets done.
The more SCIENCE gets done, the more we win forever.
