You move as swiftly as you dare, for you mustn't alert them to your presence. You've been tracking them for the better part of a day now and there are only a few hours of daylight remaining. You're a decent tracker, but nowhere near as experienced as some of the best hunters in the village. The ability to track a moving group at night is an ability reserved for the elite, like Rorke or Chaunce. But your day will come. You are young and still have much to learn.

Watching your step to ensure no detritus gives away your position with a snap or a pop, you move up to the edge of your copse. For the first time in hours, you spy your quarry. The gang of elk are slowing, waiting for the weakest of the group to recuperate. It isn't a perfect shot, but this may be the best opportunity you get. You nock your best arrow, remembering the care you took to carve it yourself. Pulling back the drawstring and raising the bow in a movement that is as efficient as it is instinctual, you realize there are several targets available to you.

    A) The largest male of the group. He has lived for many seasons and is possessing of a powerful build. His meat would feed your entire family throughout the winter and have some left over for your neighbors. His rack would bring a great price at market and would earn you the respect of the entire village. However, you would have to place an incredibly precise shot as he is the most well-covered and he has the ability to shrug off a non-fatal wound.

    B) One of the older females. This is the beast that was slowing down the rest of the group. She is very old and rather frail. That said, her meat would last your family throughout most of the winter. Though it would not likely be of fine quality and would be worthless for trading. She is in the open and presenting her flank to you, providing an easy shot.

    C) The youngest male. He is young and potentially powerful. Though still small at this age, he has a fine coat and a small set of antlers. He would not be able to feed your family through the entirety of winter, but his horns would fetch a decent sum at the market. This shot is of a moderate difficulty, though not nearly at the limits of your abilities.

Which shot do you choose? Also, roll d100 for success.

You loose your arrow, but as soon as your release is complete, you realize your error. Your knuckle catches the cock feather, fouling the shot. Luckily, you chose the easiest target anway. The broad head buries itself into the side of the old female, and she slumps over in pain, bellowing her agony. The rest of the gang bolts, soon leaving her behind. She is too frail to flee and so sits, helpless.

To leave her would be cruel, and you approach her swiftly, though without malice. Shouldering your bow, you draw your knife and raise her head. You watch the terror fade from her expression as the life flows out of her from the wound you have just made across her neck. Now the real work begins...

Some time later, you have properly prepared and dressed the meat, along with constructing a crude sled to carry it back on. However, dusk is swift approaching and you will not make it back before dark. You begin to whistle a jaunty tune as your trek starts...

As you near your homestead, you begin to notice something strange. You smell smoke on the wind, more thickly than the cooking fires should give off. Then, more alarmingly, you see that the light seems to be growing stronger rather than weaker as it should be with the disappearance of the sun. A fire!

Dropping your load, you begin to sprint towards the source of the light.

    >Holy hell. It would seem you are quite lucky indeed.

As you race towards the clearing, you see a melee at your neighbor, Brugg's, farm. The thatch on his roof is ablaze and a handful of figures seem to be attempting to hold back several armed men. As you approach the action, you see there are four brigands engaged with Brugg and his two sons.

They men are wearing leather armor and have decent quality weapons, one even has a well-made shield. In addition, there is another man on horseback about 20 meters away, waiting for an opening. Brugg and his sons are wielding farm implements and already are showing several wounds. If you don't intervene, they are certainly doomed.

You see your father and brother rushing to join you, but if you do not act now, the Brugg's will most likely perish. The light is bad and your heart is pounding in your chest, but you are no coward. You swallow your fear and do your best to clear your head. You're about 50 meters from the fracas and only have a half dozen arrows, your bow and your trusty knife.

What is your course of action? Would you like to engage? Wait for your family? Run away? The world is your oyster! Don't forget to roll. D100 as always.

You manage to get off two shots in quick succession. The first is aimed at the rider. It goes wide by a foot or more. Luckily for you, in the dark and the confusion, he doesn't seem to notice that he is under fire. Switching aim, you fire a quick shot at the shieldman. Without him even realizing that he was shot at, it embeds itself solidly in his shield. Crying out, the men realize they are under attack from their flank. They begin to search the shadows for the assailant.

Brugg's son has sustained a nasty wound on his arm and is mostly out of the fight. Your father and brother are a mere 10 meters from you now and you only have 4 arrows and your knife.

Ducking and running along a ditch, you traverse, hopefully throwing off your foes' sense of direction. Your father and brother look around, bewildered, as even they are unaware of your whereabouts. Following your maneuver, the shieldman now has his back facing you. Presenting an easy target, you decide to take advantage of his poor decision. Before the arrow even leaves your fingers, you know the shot will be true. You see it streak towards your target in flickering light and time seems to crawl. It embeds itself squarely in the middle of his back and he immediately slumps, his spine pierced clean through.

Two of his mates charge towards you, bellowing with rage as their comrade attempts to strip the shield off his former friend's arm. Your family now sees you and starts running towards you as well. They may reach you at the same time as your foes if you hold your ground. The rider spurs his mount, but you are unsure of his destination as of now.

Surprising even yourself, the adrenaline boost of combat seems to have heightened your focus and made you more capable. Aiming at the leg of the closer of the men, you loose. It is a beautiful shot, and wreaks terrible damage. It shatters his shin and pierces all the way through, sticking out the back. So disabled, he shrieks with pain and doubles over, clutching his useless appendage.

Shouldering your bow (which you only have 2 arrows left for), you draw your knife and settle into a fighting stance. Your single foe and your kin are closing in. Furthermore, the fourth assailant has equipped his brethren's shield In the distance, you see a tragedy.

The horeseman has begun a gallop and is closing on the Bruggs. There is nothing you can do, as you have already shouldered your bow.

Your immediate foe yells as he raises his axe above his head in a long charge. You can tell that he has used it before, but he's not terribly proficient with it. Your father and brother are mere steps away, but they have not been seen yet.

Rolling to dodge the charging brigand, stab him in the back, pick up his axe, and charge at the horsemen. When in range, release the axe and attempt to take out the horse, preferably with a axe to the neck or legs. Probably the neck, since it's a much larger target.

Your mind is completely lucid, seeing the scene before you like a game of pawns and kings. You know immediately what you must do. Rushing towards the foe, you spin around him, using all of your considerable agility to avoid his monstrous downswing, which embeds the head of his axe into the turf. Sprinting towards his screaming friend, you scoop up his axe and hurl it with all your might at the horseman.

It's not a great throw, but under the circumstances, you definitely could have done worse. It strikes the horse in his shoulder, startling him and throwing the rider off-balance. He begins to tumble from the saddle but his immense momentum causes his spear to skewer Brugg anyway and pin him against his flaming home. The rider rolls off to the side and begins to recover. Your brother manages to catch the enemy with his axe still in the ground. He bashes him in the head with a shovel, knocking him unconscious.

The foe with the shield catches up to you and bashes you with the shield in the side, hurling you off your feet. With your head swimming, you realize you need to make a move, and fast.

    Aftermath:

The Brugg's cottage has burned to the ground, consuming all of their possessions. Father Brugg is dead from the horseman's thrust and one of his sons, Chalde, will most likely die soon of infection. He was a widower, so his other son, Grun, is the sole uninjured Brugg. Thankfully, your family made it out of the affair unharmed. Of the five original brigands, 3 were killed outright. One was knocked unconscious and the other was in such pain (the one with the pierced shin), that he killed himself rather than face capture. The Bruggs will stay with your family for the time being, but there are other things to take care of first. There is the matter of the prisoner, the equipment of the dead brigands, and of course, the severely wounded brother.

What would you investigate first? Don't forget to roll as always. d100

Binding the still unconscious prisoner, you find no other weapons on his person. Your brother Calle begins to tend to the wounded Brugg while Grun helps you with the dead. Your father goes to retrieve the deer.

After a quick appraisal of the equipment of the fallen, you realize they were no mere highwaymen. They aren't the best equipped, but they are relatively uniform. You tell Grun to take all of the loot and sell as much of it as he can, so he can start rebuilding his shattered life. He offers his thanks but tells you to take your pick first as reward for saving him and his brother. It's the least he can do for you. You decide you should take one piece of armor and one weapon:

    Armor:

    A) Padded Leather Jacket. Offers good protection from arrows and some protection against blunt weapons, but is vulnerable to slashing attacks. Protects torso.

    B) Mail Leggings. Protects your legs from most blows but can still be pierced.

    C) Iron and Leather Helmet. Protects your head against all but the strongest crushing blows (or the luckiest ones).

    Weapons:

    A) Large Axe. It's honestly not much more sophisticated than a woodsman's axe, but it sure can do a lot of damage. It is very cumbersome though.

    B) Hammer. A one-handed hammer that you can loop through your belt. Great against foes with armor, but the reach is pretty small.

    C) Shield. It's a very sturdy wooden shield with bands of iron around the rim. It will serve you well, but you don't really have a weapon to complement it yet. Also, hard to carry and sling your bow at the same time.

Im going to vote for the padded leather jacket. At this point in time the leggings would just slow us down and be noisy - not good for an archer and the helmet may restrict our vision, again not good for an archer.

I vote for the hammer. We have a bladed weapon already and the axe is heavy and cumbersom. A shield doesn't really fit well for us at the moment, we rely somewhat on speed and the use of our bow.

You decide to snatch up the Padded Jacket and the Hammer, adding them to your equipment. After burying father Brugg and burning the bodies of the brigands, you return to Calle to check on Chalde, the wounded Brugg. It doesn't look good. His wound is deep and ugly looking and he is certain to lose the arm. He keeps slipping in and out of consciousness. Calle tells you that unless he is taken to town immediately, he will die.

Furthermore, the prisoner is beginning to come around. After some "questioning" involving your knife and several of his fingers, he reveals some disturbing information.

He is a member of a group of men that were recruited in a neighboring country, Bardu. They were told to wreak as much havoc on your country as possible, in preclude to a great war to come. More distressingly, this was merely a minor scouting incident gone awry. The main raid is coming to the town within a few days.

With this new information, you know your family will not be safe here. Your father is in a state of shock at losing his childhood friend (the father Brunn), so you realize that you must make a tough decision at this moment.

The wounded brother will die without a doctor. Will you take him to town or should his brother take him? Whoever goes to the town will most likely join the militia in defence of the upcoming attack.

Your family will be in extreme danger if they go to the town with the impending raid. They should head for the coast. Will you accompany them or should Brun escort them? Whoever goes to the coast will likely join the army in preparation with the war against Bardu.

What do you decide here, /tg/? No rolls necessary, this is just a vote.

Also, since this is my first quest ever, feel free to give me any tips or advice.

Damnit, misspelled several names. Was supposed to be Brugg and Grun. You get the point.

Send Grun to the town with his brother. We'll pack up everything and get to hiding. Don't forget the food.

Agreed. Courage is one thing, stupidity another. We should hide. We may be able to help out once the skirmish has begun but lets not go throwing away our lives.

So just to be sure, you folks are voting to head to the coast?

I guess so. I don't much care where we go as long as its away from here. We can fight later, for now...we run.

I agree with this, wish Grun luck and say goodbye to them both. afterwards salt the meat and pack up. ask your father if Grun could use the house while were gone, considering he no longer has a house of his own.

Taking Grun aside, you decide to be frank with him. You explain that family is the most important thing right now. You think that he should do his best to save his brother and that you need to do what you can to save your family.

Agreeing with you, Grun takes up the shield and axe and ties them to the saddle of his horse. Using the sled you made, he lashes his brother to the back of it.

"Farewell my friend, I will not forget your name..."

Speaking of which, what is your name?

Very... Imperial sounding. Don't forget, we also need a last name.

Unless, of course, you all would prefer to remain unnamed.

    >A good compromise leaves everyone angry. Lets say our father is named Julius. We assume his name as our surname.

"And farewell to you, Grun Bruggson. Lino Julius will not forget you either. I wish you and your brother luck. May fortune treat you more kindly than it has this day."

And with that, your childhood friend was gone. Gone in the defense of Valdun, the town you grew up next to. Will you ever see him again? Time will tell.

And with that, the night was consumed with preparations for the journey ahead. For the trip to the coast is long, and not always safe. Packing what clothes and food your family can muster, you decide to move out at first light. You make for Harbrukk in the morning.

Once there, times are hard. Your meagre supply of coins soon runs out. Though your brother and father find work at the wharf, it is not enough to support your family. Desperation and not a little bit of vengeance coursing through your head, you decide to join the Ostern army. This is met by disapproval by your mother of course, but the rest of your family understands.
