With a rumble of blessed fire, the Litany begins unloading everything that can point downward at the vent floor, obliterating waves upon waves of Tyranids as they smash against the metal floor. Within a minute, the ground begins to creak, and suddenly the entire floor section gives way, thousands of rivets and bolts flying everywhere as the vent panel pops out from the strain.
Below you is a scene unlike any you've ever witnessed. Every gear, every flat surface is charred and blackened, as if held to an open flame. Across dozens of hive-gears, you can see collapsed hive and spore tower spires alike littering the edges of multiple vortex craters.
A glimmer of color and movement catches your eye, and you notice a small group of a couple thousand Tyranids with the same red and white markings you saw attacking the Litany. They're clustered around a few larger monsters, including a Hive tyrant, when suddenly the ground around them erupts, reddish-black monsters covered in what appears to be solidified magma or molten metal attacking them.
As the last surviving handful of gaunts try futilely to escape the huge creatures, you come to three realizations. One is that the new monsters actually resemble Tyranids very strongly, if strangely. Two, you now become aware that the Tyranids in the vent were trying to escape this new strain of monster.
And three, a half-dozen of them spot the Litany, and pairs of huge flaming wings become visible as they lift off towards the ship. |
