You can hear talking, or perhaps whispers. You can make it out, though it feels as if you do so from a great distance.

Then you realize, you're waking up. Your eyes shoot open.

"-one's vitals look OK. You check the others, I'll defrost this one."

    "On it."

The door to your cryo-cell opens, your blurry vision barely allowing you to see the chamber open. Mist spreads from the cryogenic freezer into the hallway as your vision clears. You reflexively grab onto a helpful-looking gloved hand shoved through the mist. "Alright, sleepyhead. Come on out of there, time to wake up." As soon as the warmer air outside of the cryo-chamber hits you, your mind immediately fixates on just how fucking cold it was in there.

As you stand, and the mental fog clears itself from your mind, you look to see who helped you out of your chamber. A five-foot-ten man in a blue jumpsuit with thick-rimmed glasses looks you up and down before looking down at a clipboard and going over a list with a pencil.

"Alright, let's see here...what's YOUR name, soldier?"

"You don't know?" The guy in the jumpsuit gives you an odd look as he marks something down on that clipboard of his. "Well, alright. But, you don't need to call me 'sir.' I'm part of the science team. The rest of your battalion's getting defrosted, and so far, you're the only one showing any adverse effects. Considering you're the only one, I should PROBABLY turn you over to the medical staff and let them figure out what's up, but right now, you're needed elsewhere. The doctors and nurses are all still getting unfrozen anyways so that option's out for right now."

He glances over at his friend, a six-foot-nine burly man in another blue jumpsuit, with brown hair. His friend is opening another one of the cryo-chambers. The man with glasses nods at the opened door behind him. "Down the hall and to the left. The Colonel wants you in your power armor and topside in fifteen. We need to see what we're dealing with. Welcome to the New World, soldier."

Without saying a word in response, you make your way out of the room and begin heading down the metal corridor beyond. Several other men in jumpsuits greet you, nodding in your general direction. Eventually, following the scientist's directions, you come to a room with a sign over it reading 'Armory.'

The door slides open as you approach, and you see several men inside, gearing up in several slightly different suits of armor. One has an astronaut-esque bubble-helmet, and another has a helmet with an extremely compact visor and thin-looking plating. You hear the other men in the room stop talking to one another as you head in, and the majority turn to face you. Some appear to be uneasy, others give you hard looks.

However, mounted on the walls of the room are several suits of armor, lying unclaimed.

    >Pick one:

    >Light scout armor with light plating and a visor with built-in binoculars, nightvision, and a spotting laser
    >Light jump armor with jump-jets built into the boots, incorporating slightly heavier plating than the scout armor
    >Heavy armor that will permit easy use and survival against heavy weapons
    >Medium armor that provides ease of movement and incorporates some long-range comm gear

You take the medium armor off the wall and begin to put it on. At first, it feels a bit heavy, but it gets lighter as you put it on in full. You hear a dull hum as the suit finally activates, clicking and hissing as it seals together to protect against airborne contaminants.

You hear a robotic voice over your helmet's earpiece as green letters flash across your new visor.

    >WELCOME USER

    >REQUEST CALLSIGN FOR TACNET UPLINK

Behind you, you can hear the other men in the armory commenting on you and your presence. "What's this guy's story?"

"I dunno. He probably just woke up. I don't recognize him, anyways."

"Word is the nerds were just about to start waking up the guys from Sector TG...That's just down the hall. The stories creep me right the fuck out..."

    >CONNECTING TO TACNET
    >WELCOME, TANGO GOLF 48

As soon as you're linked to the TacNet, you can hear some radio chatter over your earpiece. "This is Bunker 145 Command, we're reading your vital signs and have confirmed your status. Uh...whoa. Tango Golf, we are reading you as a Tier 9 Asset. That CAN'T be right...Getting word from higher up. The Colonel wants to see you personally. Grab some weapons and then head for Briefing Room 12. You're heading topside slightly ahead of schedule."

To your left, a panel on the wall opens to reveal a staggering array of weapons mounted on it, complete with backpack ammo supplies, magazines, fuel tubes, and any number of other attachments, including auxiliary systems. If you weren't on a time constraint, you might be able to stand here and simply play with all your options.

    >Pick two weapons, and one auxiliary system for each.

    >Heavy Plasma Cannon - A relatively-portable anti-armor gun, frequently used by troopers in medium or heavy armor, and by two-man teams as fixed emplacements for anyone in scout or jump armor. Comes with a backpack power supply. AUXILIARY SYSTEMS: Cooling vents, overcharger

    >Grenade Launcher: A support weapon capable of launching frag, flashbang, plasma, smoke, poison gas, and concussion grenades. Comes with a built-in killswitch to permit the wielder to disarm active grenades mid-flight in the event of a potential friendly-fire incident. AUXILIARY SYSTEMS: Specialized range/arc-sight, homing uplink

    >Gauss Rifle: Automatic rifle used against targets wearing light armor or no armor. Tried-and-true design, reliable in harsh conditions. AUXILIARY SYSTEMS: Motion-tracker sight, self-maintenance module

    >Flamethrower: This new model of a weapon that dates back to Earth's older days comes with a special gel that permits for longer use in the field without refueling. The fuel tank is armored to prevent it from going off due to enemy fire. AUXILIARY SYSTEMS: Secondary fuel tank, 'Blackfire' module

    >It totals out to five votes in favor of this, and four in favor of Rifle/Cannon

Grabbing a rifle with a self-maintenance module and a grenade launcher with a homing module, along with an assortment of grenades for the launcher, your visor activates your HUD, displaying a compass at the top and a quick readout on your vitals and armor integrity in the lower corner, displayed by an image of a human divided into segments based on body parts. Everything looks green. Your HUD directs you out the door and down the hall with a dark blue arrow, heading past the armory and chatting maintenance workers in the corridor. Some turn to look at you, but go on about their business after a moment. Eventually, you come to Briefing Room 12 and head inside.

For some reason, the briefing room seems familiar to you, like something's at the forefront of your mind, but you can't articulate your thoughts on it. Standing in the room is an older soldier in a uniform, his rank insignia on his shoulder showing that he's the man you're looking for. He appears to be surveying images on a holographic projector. The projector shows a lot of images of desert terrain - Sand dunes, arroyos, etc. Off to the side are a pair of armed guards in what seems to be a variant of the light scout armor you saw earlier, wielding gauss rifles.

"Ah, you're the soldier from TG. Come on in. These are...interesting times. Not sure if you know it, but I was just defrosted myself by the nerds not two weeks ago. Most of the bunker's only been awake for a month, and judging from what the communication techs are telling me, we aren't getting any signals from neighboring bunkers. I'd suggest getting three to four guys go and help us, with a variety of skills that would be helpful on the field. A medic would be an obvious first choice, someone who knows bombs, a lock smith/hacker, etc.

Also, I suppose this is a question. We going to specialize in anything, or just be a generalized fighter-leader type guy?

"We'll send the word that they're supposed to meet you up top, near the bunker doors. You'll be handed rations and supplies right before you leave. Out the door, and head right, then upstairs. You'll come right to the door." The Colonel nods as you turn to leave the briefing room. "Godspeed, and good luck, kid. You're gonna need it."

Following the Colonel's directions, you pass several of the bunker's other cryo-chamber vaults, heading up the stairs and find yourself in a large, dust-filled control room. Several other armored individuals are standing by a large, gear-shaped door, clearly marked 'EXIT.' Their armor matches the descriptions of the soldiers you were told would be willing to accompany you on the expedition to the surface, the scout-trooper displaying a red cross on his shoulders. The jump-trooper has a first aid kit and other medical supplies clearly on-hand, and the heavy-armor trooper is carrying a flamethrower with what appears to be a 'Blackfire' module attached.

The jump-trooper notices you first and points you out, speaking with a distinct London accent. "Hey, that's gotta be him." The other two turn to face you, abandoning their previous conversation.

"You know we're not gonna find signs of life, right? Whole planet got the shit blasted out of it." The medic steps forward, arms crossed, looking you up and down. His voice is low, deep. "So, you're the commando type they unfroze. I heard they were unlocking the TG sector today. Lots of hushed tones. You don't look so badass."

"Put a sock in it, Butcher. TG's a soldier, same as the rest of us. And he's got the kit to show for it. He knows what he's doing." Locksmith turns to face the medic, obviously willing to trust you, despite your fairly shady background.

The heavy-trooper just stares at you and hefts the flamethrower, preparing to leave. Several maintenance workers walk over from a nearby crate, handing you each two weeks' worth of rations, and Butcher receives additional medical supplies.

"Door opens in sixty seconds. Get ready to run, because we're closing it precisely twenty seconds afterwards." They sound bored as they go about distributing the supplies to your explorer team.

Maybe a quick sweep to secure the immediate vicinity of the bunker, then make for the nearest neighbor. Put the scout on point, rest of the fireteam makes 10 yard transects. We can hold back on overwatch, about 10 yards behind the scout, so we can shift our fire left or right as needed.

Your team gathers their equipment and heads for the bunker door as a klaxon begins to sound in preparation for the door opening. Somehow, you know at the back of your head that this is standard procedure. The maintenance workers put on breath masks as they prepare to flip the switch and let you out. "Ready...go!"

The door slides inward, and then off to the right, in a slow, grinding cacophony. You would be blinded by the sunlight outside if your visor wasn't polarized. You rush for the door alongside the rest of your team, and within a moment, you are greeted by the sight of an endless desert and the sound of a distant, howling wind.

Butcher takes point, heading northeast as directed by you. According to your HUD compass, the northeastern bunker is closest, by about a day's travel. Or, so you can guess. You're still not sure how you know all this so instinctively. As you begin walking, the terrain slowly shifts to more rocky, uneven footing over the span of a few hours. Eventually, on the horizon, you can see something that seems to grow out of the ground, but you can't quite tell what it is.

Butcher contacts you over the radio as you approach. He seems to know what's up ahead - Probably because of the built-in magnification system in his helmet. Idea. Pass by the town close enough to be seen, but only just. Then they know people are out here. If they rush out to attack, we just confirmed hostile. If they dont, they'll know someone is around so if we enter town proper they might expect us.

After telling him your plan to get in close enough for them to see you without actually getting close enough for them to fire on you, you resume your approach. It isn't much longer before you're close enough to the community for you to see individual figures on the watchtowers. They clearly spot you, one of the watchmen pointing you out to the others, but they do nothing yet.

After a few more moments, you give the word to move on. They know you're here, and they'll probably be watching for you later. You call for Locksmith and Lunch to catch up to you and Butcher before continuing your trek to the northeast, circling around the settlement and giving it a wide berth. As far as you can tell, nobody follows you.

After another few hours of uninterrupted travel, you come across what appears to be a small camp of tents and a small campfire. There are a few bodies in the camp, torched beyond any hope of recognition, but you can still see clearly that it WAS human. The others have all been stabbed, clubbed, or shot full of what appear to be makeshift arrows, and none of them are wearing clothing one would see in a bunker; nothing but leathers and primitive wear such as rags. The damage is recent. All of the wounds are still bloody, and the body's still smoking after being burnt. The camp itself looks like it was ransacked.

"Wow. They got some nasty ways of killing shit out here." Butcher kicks the burnt man's corpse, while Locksmith starts inspecting the tents, gauss rifle out.

"Not seeing anything in the tents, sir." Locksmith and Lunch finish inspecting the tents, and Lunch holds up what appears to be a small gold coin.

"Hey, look, we're rich!" Locksmith points at the coin and jokes before taking it from Lunch and tossing it over to you. "Let's keep moving, this place gives me the creeps."

Butcher gets back into his position as the squad's pointman, and you inspect the coin as you walk. It's clearly of recent manufacture, albeit dusty from being on the ground for a few hours. It has an image of an eagle, or at least some kind of bird of prey, stamped into it. The bird's wings are spread out, and in the image, it has a pair of crossed swords and a shield directly behind it. It's small size and recent manufacture indicates it may be local currency, or possibly some kind of badge of office.

The bunker gets closer on your compass, but you come a sudden cliff, and the land below makes up what seems to be a massive crater.

You immediately call in to Bunker 145 and let them know that there's a massive crater where the bunker's supposed to be. A quick check of the Geiger Counter tips you off that the radiation levels ARE, in fact, far heavier than normal. In your newly-earned Geiger-counter-based wisdom, you decide to avoid sliding down for right now, just until you can confirm the radiation's too lethal.

"Only way the bunker could be totally gone is if someone actually blew it up from inside. Otherwise, the crater would be larger, and we'd all be dead too. And after THIS long...well, if it had been blown up way back in the day, the radiation would've dropped to normal levels by now. No, judging from what you're describing, this was something else, something recent. There may still be an entrance. Look for a door."

The others are wearing more of those leathers we saw earlier...Shit, one of them has hand grenades. I think this might be some kind of hunting party or militia. They haven't spotted us, but they will VERY soon."

"Hell of a thing they must be hunting." Locksmith raises his gauss rifle and moves ahead of you, Lunch hefting his flamethrower. He'll need to close in to be effective against them if they turn out to be hostile.

You give the order to spread out. Locksmith and Lunch head to your left and right, and Butcher heads up in front of you while you hang back to observe the situation. Butcher waves a hand and calls out. "Hey! Fancy seeing you people out here!"

There's no gunshots or explosions, so that's promising. Eventually, you can hear Butcher talking to them from over his radio, but you can't hear their responses. You eventually get close enough to confirm that they're talking peacefully, with their weapons lowered. "It's alright, sir, they're friendly." Butcher calls back and waves you over. The Dragon Guard are not natives of this land, either. The Empire comes from the far east, bringing stability to this land through force and conquest. Bandits and outlaws are driven before them like dust on the wind. This is good. Meanwhile, those that do not submit to their rule, but do not harm others through selfishness and force, are brought low through the same might the Imperials use to slay wrongdoers. This is not good. The surrounding tribes and kingdoms have united against the Empire as they press further west. There are no finer experts in the art of constructing a fortress to stand against all comers. I doubt the Empire has taken the Monastery. Yet. No, friend, I feel as if your problems belowground are of a different nature. Explains a few things. It also suggests that the other vaults we're looking for are either still very well hidden, are in danger, or have also been destroyed. Which makes it all the more important that we find them. And if there are still hidden vaults, finding them may shift the balance of power.

"The Dragon Guard serve as the personal emissaries and bodyguards of King Dernhalm. The Empire has begun advancing, making demands that King Dernhalm submit to Imperial rule. The King's people are content, and the King himself sees no reason to submit. Our militia and army have probably been the greatest obstacle the Imperials have faced thus far, and with allies, we may yet push them back. That is why we are here in the northlands."

We were hoping to recruit locals as allies, or perhaps mercenary auxiliaries. The Empire has done the same with territories they absorb peacefully, and so far, it has worked against us. We've decided to even the odds."

Upon your questions about local hazards, Vrull nods. "An excellent question. The wildlife is dangerous here. Watch for birds. They are known to carry off young men, and take rifles to kill easily. When they attack in flocks, you will be carried off. And watch for watering holes with a human skull turned on its face near them; that is the local sign that it is poisoned."

    >>17628251

Vrull grunts in response to this question. "We discovered a pre-Cataclysm cache of Old World firearms. Originally, our army wielded blades hand-crafted by blacksmiths, and fine-crafted crossbows, and firearms belonged to the Dragon Guard alone. However, the majority of the pre-Cataclysm guns were passed along to the frontline units of the King's army, to fight the Imperials. We of the Dragon Guard are forced to make do with what we have, due to our dwindling importance in the affairs of the King's army. It is...frustrating."
