So she has an engineering/technological talent, but her two worst stats are intelligence and skill. Still above average though so she's not useless at it. I'm thinking her firepower and toughness can be reflected as a having her gear be constantly tuned, optimized and boosted. Looting can be about her getting choice parts to work with. She's a van that's as fast as hell so her performance is definitely tricked out too.

And when it comes down to actually putting her stuff into action she's an absolute beast. Haul ass into the enemy unloading massive firepower and being tough enough to take retaliation. Even her clone can take a hit or two.

Actually, I'm just trying to write up 9 of each category for now. When I'm done I'll drop it into a mediafire account and post it here for the gentlemen to edit at their leisure. For a catchall, though, I guess we could say that:

    >Pistols do their damage in d6
    >Rifles do their damage in d8
    >Grenade Launchers do their damage in d10
    >Cannons do their damage in d12
    >Special Weapons have set abilities
    >Melee weapons do their damage in d4

And that the better the weapon, the higher the dice count (i.e., a damned good pistol may do 5d6, while a piss-poor cannon may do only 1d12)

I'm still working on it. Feedback on this before I get too far?

That's what I was thinking. So, like, a flechette cannon might have a dice rating of 4d12, and it ignores any armor or whatever you've got on, while a Null Ray does 5d8 damage but has a chance of stopping the 'bot in his tracks for X rounds.

    If I may critique:

Rolling for your class can be fun. You shouldn't have to do it though. Having one of those classes have double the value of the rest is imbalanced.

Why are robot engineers unable to fix robots? Human engineers can. It strikes me there would be overlap with the medical class, like human doctors and veterinarians.

Why do robots have an aristocracy at all? And why is this different from the politician background?

Dual backgrounds with two tiers might be interesting. You can pick two first-tier backgrounds or just one first-tier background and its specialty. A medtech on Cybertron could become a soldier on Earth, for instance. Or a soldier on Cybertron could become a commander on Earth. (A commander would have skills in leadership and building fortifications.)

So, are were we going to make the individual background ability lists or just keep the master list?

And for the sake of NPCs, or multi-form changers, I think this could work for the tool and weapon alt-modes

    Alt-mode:
    Tool/weapon:
    Get Subspace Storage
Pick one Attribute, you gain +30 to that attribute and -20 to Strength and Speed.
Pick a Talent, or an attack form. If you pick a talent you gain that skill as a favored skill.

    Abilities:
Subspace Storage: Your Alt-Mode has a wildly variable size, whenever you transform, you may pick your size or a smaller one to transform into.

Special: You may be Equipped by another Transformer, when you are equipped in such a way, the transformer equipping you may use your chosen attribute or apply a +30 bonus to their attribute, whichever is higher. If you picked a talent, they gain that talent as a favored skill. You automatically adjust your size to one appropriate for the transformer equipping you.

Whenever the equipping transformer makes a roll with your chosen attack form or talent, you also make a roll, and keep the better result.

A two-tier system could have a first-tier background of technician, which works like a combination of handyman and paramedic, and several second-tier backgrounds to specialize in, like transformation (doctor) and transmutation (inventor).

I like it because its not a tree per se. You only have two picks, which you make at creation, and they essentially come down to generalize or specialize. Note that when modified by attributes the generalists aren't left helpless. The two-tier system also lends to a lot of variation in character concept:

    Generalists:

Maybe, something needs to be less random about it. I've never much cared for random stats in the first place, to be honest. It's not so bad when the range is smaller or you can assign the rolls where you want or some kind of restriction is put on the total. One of my favorite methods is based on drawing cards, random but level power.

Of course this isn't D&D, some 'bots really are stronger or weaker than their fellows and they can make for fun characters either way.

What is missing is being able to match the pieces together to make them fit, being able to select a background based on your random stat rolls would go a long way to help there. Maybe choosing form too, or perhaps roll for the category and then choose between the specific types. Like roll up a car and then choose between a fast one, utility, truck, etc.

Anyway, an alternate timeline that might be interesting is one where the revolt against the Quints failed. The rebel hardware just temporarily weakened the Quint presence on Cybertron.
The Quints responded by making a new series of loyal robots. The Quints slowly wittled away the rebel forces while acquiring more soldiers and factory worlds.
The vestiges of the Rebel Transformers now plan several desparate journies to alien worlds to obtain energy and allies.

I'm thinking that having both melee and ranged attack accuracy dependent on one single stat might be a bad idea. If Skill happens to be low then the bot can't hit worth a damn, despite having high strength and/or firepower. Maybe if it were a check based on half of skill and half of strength or firepower?
    >> Rasp 01/09/12(Mon)04:08 No.17473602
    >>17473427
I don't think that low-accuracy and high-damage is a flaw in the design.

But I am not sure if we should just use the firepower Stat. Surely a bot with even bad aim can hit the wall in front of them, or a restrained target, more than 9% of the time.

This might call for a bunch of convoluted math, with some formula regarding (an amount of) the targets Speed being subtracted from the Skill roll.

But then again I don't have much experience with Roll under systems, they might have already thought of something like this.

Nor I. My problem is when only one stat is entirely in charge of offensive accuracy regardless of the type. Now it may end up not being a as much problem due to the way mechanics or gear may work, but as it looks now rolling a 1 in skill makes strength and firepower not amount to much. Getting a high skill combined with good firepower and strength could end up with one hit kills everywhere, every time.

It's just a matter of keeping either end of the scale fun to play.

As some people noted, it seems weird that Cybertronians have a noble caste.
Several solutions have been put forward to validate the rule of Cybertron's so called Elite.
The religious will often claim that the first nobles were given their right to rule by their spark's descent from the first primes' leaders, the Leige Maximo and Prima.
Those who claim that ancient Cybertronians were first created by the mythical "builders" (who some radical historians have linked to the Quintessons), have claimed that the creators made an Administrator caste, to act as middlemen between the Builder rulers and their worker servants. They were thus given more autonomy and creativity, which some have pointed out, may be responsible for the Builder's disappearance.

Regardless of their origin, none can deny that some Cybertronians possess an innate sense of how to lead others, and a personal aura which encourages others to follow their commands.
Due to this, the Noble caste generally find positions managing areas of land, running the villages, becoming military commanders, or becoming factory foremen.

Notably, the leaders of the Autobot and Decepticon movements are not nobles. Although Optimus is known for his heroic aura, this is due to the mantle of the Prime, as before he accepted the responsibility he has stated he blended into the background.
Similarly, despite the claims of his cult of personality, Megatron has never possessed any talent for leadership, and leads by brutal and unquestionably violent example.

I'm interested in fluff, particularly Earth-related ones.

I mean, we all know how annoying the human characters are 90% of the time, but between the shows, movies and comics, you can probably make something actually awesome out of it.

I did like the movies' approach to human vs Transformer combat, when they weren't going full retard- most of the time, humans won't stand a chance unless they know what they're up against and have some specialised weapons, and can take advantage of their size and numbers.

A3 believes that Cybertronians can only thrive by setting aside their differences and working together. Allegiance: Destron
    Function: Butcher

“I am not an abomination; I am Cybertron’s true face.”

Bio: Cannibaron was once a relatively normal Destron soldier who was part of an expedition to the lower levels of Cybertron in search of abandoned Quintesson weapons. His expedition never returned and neither did he for almost 1000 years. When he did return, he had adopted a strange, monstrous alt-mode and developed a taste for the chasses and sparks of fellow Cybertronians. Cannibaron is surprisingly erudite and sees his horrific actions as part of a “natural cycle” to which Cybertron “must be restored.” Small numbers of nihilistic criminals have flocked to his side, eager to “feast” on any they find.

(I now imagine Cannibaron to look like Cybertron Scourge)

    Well no, actually.

If we went fully logical, you wouldn't have point-buy. You would pick a chassis and be given a solid line of physical stats, then pick a processor for mental stats, and an alt-mode for stat mods. Then you get backgrounds for abilities.

It wouldn't be point-buy at that point, it would be "plug and play"

Which would be kind of fun and quick to be honest.

I guess that works too. Or he can turn INTO a safe. That endurance justifies it if nothing else.

Rolling for form because why the hell not. Might help me come up with a gimmick. Adding a using 1d21 for possibility of inanimate alt form.

He's a long range missile launcher, each of his warheads is created by himself and features not only highly damaging explosives but the most treacherous technological assaults and biological nastiness his can think up. What he doesn't manage to kill he assures suffers an even worse fate. He loves collateral damage especially when it includes large numbers of pathetic fleshbags.

Goes to great lengths to keep himself hidden until - and during - his assaults to destroy and ruin the enemy and everything around around them. When retaliation does come knocking it is likely to hit his hologram, his clone, if not clones hologram. His rockets all feature a custom 2-stage system that quietly sends them to the location of his decoy and launches them in earnest from there. If all preparations fail he converts spare rocket fuel into a fast escape system.

    Bumpan with another bio.

    Cyclotron
    Allegiance: Neutral
    Function: Marauder

“Iacon, Kaon, Sybarr; These places have laws. Here, in the forgotten places, I am The Law.”

Bio: Cyclotron is a marauding former Destron who became disillusioned with the cause. He believes that Cybertron is destined for extinction, a belief which most note as being tinged with religious sentiment. He preys upon isolated clusters of Guardians and Destrons, striking like lightning and stealing their supplies.

So, how are you getting stats for the NPC's?

    Rolling or picked?

Because I was working on that plug and play tangent and realized it could be better used for making mook npcs en-mass.

How are you planning to write this up? I can throw a writeup together on google docs this evening in an hour or two based on what's in this thread. It'd be super bare bones though.
