    >On the first assault, realize that something's wrong, because the enemy troops don't fight like humans
    >Realize about two thirds of the way through that they're not human at all

It's cruel GMing, and it's like a train wreck. I can't stop looking, and I can't bring myself to stop it.

The badass sniper whose daughter slipped out of his fingers as the escape shuttle took off has spent the entire campaign hunting humans with brutal, calculated efficiency, because he wants to make them pay for taking his little girl away from him.

Right now, he's in the middle of an incredibly epic sniper duel with some sort of death machine on the enemy's side. Some sort of prodigy who's already killed three supporting characters and an actual PC. He's never caught more than a glance of his enemy, and the player's not too smart, but I think even he caught on a bit when he saw the beads in her hair as the sniper vanished behind cover.

It's going to be a sad New Years.

    Oh, man. That is depressing.

    You've got an amazing GM.

Of course, you realize there are only two ways to truly win this. The first, aka the "true patriots" method, is to give yourselves up to the judgement of your own people, and know that even if they kill you, you fought for their freedom. Still sad, but at least you don't have to murder your own family and neighbors.

The second is to turn this situation to your advantage. Your enemy has given you the greatest gift of all: your own friends and loved ones, thousands strong, all given the best training and equipment straight from your enemy's resources. All you have to do is change their minds; get them on your side, and they'll win the war for you.

Now, while the latter is the better option, I have no bloody clue on how you're going to do it. Good luck.

Holy shit I can see it now. He's going to finally get the kill, and realize it too late, and crawl over to where she's dying, and try to tell her how sorry she is.

And she's going to spit in his face and say, "For my father," and expose the daisy chain of grenades she's just pulled out of her jacket.

And while the rest of you are wondering how you're going to decide the order in which you all go into the bathroom and slit your wrists in the tub, your DM will be sitting there with his head cocked back, shooting through tragedygasm after tragedyorgasm.

    this reminds me...

    >Run a campaign based on The Forever War
    >Players never read the book, don't know anything about it, intrigued by the setting.
    >First couple sessions are training on Charon, players come to fear and respect the harsh, unromantic reality of hard sci space combat.
    >Everybody expects the worst, characters expect the first assault on tauren base to be a suicide mission.
    >First battle against aliens who have no concept of man to man combat. They just stand and watch in confusing as human soldiers slaughter them by the hundreds.
    >Hallucinogenic combat aggression drugs kick in. Players roleplay like champs. Real life san loss ensues.

That's sort of the thing really. By all accounts, the guy himself is a total tool, and granted he definitely did kill a lot of people (I suspect he just killed everyone over the age of 12 or something), but the society he's built out of the ashes looks to be like Humaniboo Space Prussia.

The real fear right now is that this is the prototype for a grand scheme to find undeveloped species, murder half of them, and then turn them into good little humans so that the process can be repeated. I definitely wouldn't wish this shit on anyone else, I just wonder if it's that simple. Maybe it really wasn't the humans' fault, maybe something went wrong.

Hell, I don't even know anymore. The more I think about this the less black and white it all seems. It's such an easy setup when the bad guys come and steal your puppy, but then you find out later that he made it a puppy champion, and now it has ten puppy wives and thirty puppy-puppies and a puppy mansion...

Attempt to take over the media. Forcefully, most likely.

Make it clear to your "brothers" that you have returned to save your species. And, more importantly, those who truly follow the human dogma are traitors to their very essence, and MUST be purged.

If your old culture had any that were seriously worshiped gods, start invoking them. Use scripture to prove you're right.

In what sick world is this, our reword, when our sons, daughters, mothers fathers brothers and sisters are polluted - their sin is unforgivable for it is a willing one. There is but one option my brave, true fellows - we must burn them all in purifying flame, let their souls fly free from the shackles of deceit and selfishness.

Our civilization crumbles tonight, ourselves the underminers of the very foundations we sought to preserve.

To you, those we fought for, you disgust us. All this time we've been striving to save the honour and memory of our race, but it is clear that you are not worthy of such regard. You will die knowing that all of you are worth less than my true family (name your pcs, give them some noble eulogy.)

A world's shadow falls tonight, I would rather burn it all then let history remember our race as a selfish, deluded, maligant remnant of our true glory.

Come, brothers and sisters, we shall leave no trace of this taint behind."

Well we specifically were like... You know. Pre-industrial society before the cataclysm, so we didn't have much to go off of. We had to rely on our friends for everything technological at first, it's only now that some of us are educated enough to really do some teching of our own.

As for our friends, the guys we signed on with are badass, but they had no idea where we were from! Nobody who survived had any idea how star charts or astronomy worked or anything, and since the humans are a rapidly rolling engine of death that sucks up primitive worlds like nobody's business, it could've been any of a million places, most of which are well behind enemy lines. Without a specific heading, there was no chance.

We got lucky when the villain slipped up and told us where we were from, but now I'm starting to think that he had it planned. Lure our allies into a trap, test his new toys, and fuck with an old enemy at the same time? Hell, I'd have done it.

While this is some damn good GMing, I have to give kudos to the PCs here, OP included. It doesn't matter how great your GM is, if the PCs are shit, then the campaign is shit.

I have had a total of 7 campaigns in my life, most were rather short. 4 of which I (tried to) GM, the others I PC'd.

Every single goddamn campaign of those 7 I was the only person who was even remotely interested in having an engaging and interesting story with somewhat interesting characters. Everyone else was nothing but "lol so random" "I want to kill anything that moves" "There's a major plot points happening? I don't fucking care give me my money so I can buy shit" and of course "I kill the hooker and run away because its funny."

Just once, just once I'd like to GM a game that has players that are willing to role play and are interested in whats actually happening in the story and not min maxing their characters like their playing goddamn WoW.

I see that everybody wants to have OP's GM. Not unexpected, it seems like a nice riveting story-line (well-paced and well-measured, as in a TV series rather than a movie) It's not that hard, honestly. The big thing here is the twist. That delicious, ethically inverting twist. The one that makes the players think about just what the hell's going on between themselves and the setting.

    Again, not that hard.

Pick the twist ahead of time. I know, planning in advance for PC's is hard, but you've got to do it if you want something like this. Keep it simple, like, 'the PC's end up fighting their own people', or 'a player must battle their own daughter' (for examples).

THEN, work backwards. Figure out the Why/Who/Where/How of it and make sure to weave it into story developments. As long as you've got a central story-line (I hope to god you do if you're table-topping in general), it shouldn't be that hard to eventually lead the players into it. That way, you keep the proper foreshadowing to prevent it coming out of nowhere and seeming like a bunch of nonsense, and you still get the nice kink in their perceived story-line.

If they end up going down a different plot track entirely, though, that's when it threatens to be completely bypassed, as PCs are not the most predictable creatures. Fear not! If the twist is simple enough, it can simply be retooled and foreshadowed differently so that you still end up with something along those lines. As long as they don't go perpendicular to the story (side quests, side quests everywhere) or the other way (lol characterization inversion), you should still get far enough in the plot so that you can have it happen.

Just some food for thought that hopefully does a little good, so you too can become the weaver of stories that are, fates willing, told time and time again.

Nope. he basically said, "well fuck my luck," and ran. First thing he did when he got to the surface was find a priest willing to cast atonement on him, so he could switch alignment. Why? because if he was good, he could better fit in, and people wouldn't hunt his ass down. So I basically ran as far and fast as I could till there was nowhere else to go, then convinced people our only hope for survival was to plane shift the hell out of there. I was CG by then, so I did pretty well in Limbo.

Did get ganked eventually, but by then I pretty much ended up in Olidammara's Den, as apposed to Loth's bullshit. So I lost, but I won in the long run, because he thought it was an awesome joke that I didn't even know it was my fault.
