254 KB Dungeons The Dragoning Official Release LawfulNice 12/25/11(Sun)16:40 No.17330530
Merry Christmas, everyone! I've decided to get in on the Christmas spirit and release not one but two books, the revised Dungeons the Dragoning core book (Version 1.5) and the first full public release of Book 2: For a Few Subtitles More. I've bookmarked them using Infix PDF Editor, which saved me an assload of time doing it manually.

Dungeons the Dragoning Core Version 1.5:

Dungeons: The Dragoning: 40,000: 7th Edition: Book 2: For a Few Subtitles More Version 1.2:

Get 'em while they're hot and let me know what you think. A lot of small changes were made to each. I daresay it's the best release yet!

Hark, it is I, and I heard that somebody wanted a copy of my crappy incomplete SM screen!

Be aware, these were made for 1.4, I haven't read 1.5 yet, so you're on your own for that.

Also, as I originally made these for my own use, there's some spelling errors and minor typos. Although enough people have pestered me about that that I guess I'll try and make a new one sometime later this week.

There's some serious clearing up issues that I need to do. A lot of my notes were basically 'SEE SPELLS IF ANYBODY ACTUALLY TRIES TO BE A MAGE'. Also lack of notification that you get a Full action OR two half actions.

The center screen in general can be printed out as a player aide as well.

Thanks. I want to include more information on some of the bits. How does the formatting seem to be? I just kinda said 'eh, fuck it here's a font, let's start typing, and see what goes where'. I kind of took three sheets of paper, turned them sideways, and then scribbled in general ideas of what to go where, and went to typing. That's why there's a lot of dead space in some of the pages, but I didn't want to cram it all in. I mean, I don't really do any real graphic design work, so hell if I know how it looks/works.

I understand DtD has a exaltation system but it's actually easy and fun to manage it and it's not really the focus of the system.

short version: got bored, ORBITAL BOMBARDMENT of the place they were supposed to storm and rescue an Eldarin's general daughter, showed him the footage bragging about how awesome his ship is (after another party member had managed to social-fu away that debacle to begin with), then threw a quiet bitch fit when he got the Enemy hindrance for no EXP because of that.

I don't feel like typing up the whole long version again. I might be forming a new game night, and might try re-opening the topic if the right guys show up to it, because some guys had actually been playing pretty awesomely.

Just PM the head GM (that's me) with general ideas, mention you're the guy from /tg/, etc, so i know you're not just some random idiot who can't read barging into the forums.

Also, no ships, even if you take Holdings, mostly because I'm still skittish from THAT GUY, and the difficulty of balancing ship scale and personal scale. I might be making an F-Zero/Star Fox styled game in a few months that would lean more toward the vehicle/ship scale.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:05 No.17331392
oh, you could certainly use it to run Exalted (personally I recommend M&M for that).

    Oh, hey, LawfulNice, if you're still hanging around;

    1. What are the general costs for acquiring new torpedos, the BP cost * 5? the BP cost itself? (can't be that, I assume?)

    2. Any good idea for determining monetary rewards in terms of either dots of wealth, or specific bonus to acquisitions, or something similar?

Also typo watch: Dragonborn still have 'synergy' listed as their power stat on their progression table.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:14 No.17331481
You could play a hell of a game in a single crystal sphere, though. Imagine, your spelljammer crashed on a feral world. The PCs are the only survivors, and there's no tech. Then you discover an ancient evil buried deep within the core of this planet.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:14 No.17331482
Just because there is a galaxy out there doesn't mean a whole adventure can't take place in just one of the spheres.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:15 No.17331484

    >we won't be using the advanced ship-building rules or ship battles as detailed in Book 2

Basically that. There's still plenty of SPAAAAAAAAACE, and I may eventually give the group a ship of their own, but it's intent is to be a setpiece. Things like the orbital bombardment, teleportarium, etc. make me have to either plan out alternatives, or start waving technobabble nonsense around.

Also ship combat, if you're not an officer (i.e. somebody with appropriate skills or classes) or captain of your own ship, can get really, really boring, and I am under the impression that would only get worse in a pbp setting.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:15 No.17331487

Also what these two guys said, although that's not the intent of my game.

The core aspect of Exalted is (now) "all non-solars wish they could be solars and look up to Desus as their spiritual liege" so I would disagree that its particularly Exalted.

The only thing that really screams Exalted to me is that we have both vampires and daemonhosts (which are based off abyssals, which are in turn based off vampires), so we have two sorts of undeadish blood drinkers.

    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:41 No.17331775

Yes. The idea is that it's every setting ever, if you can figure out how to land it into the framework of the races, classes, or exaltations, depending on what you're going for.

I've had one guy mention trying to play the main character from Soul Reaver by refluffing a Deamonhost a little bit.

Hell, in my RL game, I'd interspliced Cylons, modrons, and necrons together, complete with a V-mask wearing Trazyn knockoff.

As cool as that is, I can only see myself using this as a go-to for converting things into an accessible system. My presence in my group's is pretty heavy handed, to the point where I make and revise their characters; not to optimise, but to make sure they are functional. I introduced them to Pathfinder, and subsequently traditional gaming as more than checkers, not one year ago and have been DMing for them since. They're always coming to me with, "Is there a game for this," or "- a way to play that?"

I wish I knew more fa/tg/uys irl. My mind churns with satire and spinoffs that I would love to derp through with some gents.
    >> Anonymous 12/25/11(Sun)18:54 No.17331902

Well, if you want to, you can always pre-make them characters, and then write up very small cities and go with it from there. D:tD is all about what is in your head; if you limit the scope they can percieve at any one time, you'll limit the head explosions.

Even the players who I had a good time with when I ran it once were a little overwhelmed when they see everything at once.

Hell, it'd be very easy to run a TF2 or some sort of MGS like game using paragons or something similar and low-complexity.

Ponies are stupid and don't really fit in with the rest stylistically or powerwise. You'd have to use the ponies winged and horned living creator gods from the show as the default for players
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:23 No.17343082
Ponies aren't inherently inferior to humans or Tau or anything like that. Ponies are going in as a race, not an Exaltation. The ones you're speaking of would be Pony Paragons, or something. Maybe there should be a "Demigod" exaltation which allows you to be double the normal size (or just Size+2, whichever is more balanced).
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:28 No.17343132
What would a Mary Sue exaltation even entail? All I can figure is that it would have a tell wherein the eyes change color, or they glow with a rainbow light.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:29 No.17343134
    >full stats for frilly hats and perhaps also dresses as items and artifacts.

if we get bonuses from the frillyness of our girly hats I want additional rules for bonuses for the manlyness of our mustaches like 7th sea desperately needed. (also it needed them for the size and floppyness our hats and the outrageousness of our accents.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:32 No.17343159
That should all be covered by a sort of a general "description bonus" thing. A sort of a stunt bonus, I guess. Some DMs might be down for awarding starting XP as a reward for that stuff. Most would give you stunt bonuses for incorporating it into your actions.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:35 No.17343183

Well, hats and fancy mustaches and such might help to fulfill the 2 dot stunt requirements. It's not 'I stab them', it's 'I give a jaunty tip of my feathered hat as I dance around their blade, mine licking along their leg.'
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:36 No.17343192
"Heart" sounds like a good name for a resource stat. They should be required to take a single "flaw". That flaw doesn't effect anything, but they can invoke it to regain Heart points. I'm not sure what the Powers would be. Does anyone have some good Mary Sues to post for research purposes?
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:36 No.17343195
perfect. I am completely satisfied with the game now
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:37 No.17343201

I think the charm line of spells would be a good thing to add to their abilities. Just for the irrational 'Why does the grumpy cynic love them from moment one' factor.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:38 No.17343211
Mary Sue will have one power. When used you pick a power from a different exaltation and do that but with an additional +1 bonus somewhere
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:41 No.17343232
This has to actually be balanced and usable. That can be their five-dot power. And adding +1s costs a heart point for each one. And it can only apply to the four dot or lower abilities.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:42 No.17343244

    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:49 No.17343307

A decent way to help keep it balanced would be to make them pay double. So they CAN do the fancy tricks but it's going to cost them like hell.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:53 No.17343336
That impinges on the fun of both the Mary Sue and people playing exaltations that the Mary Sue copies. How about if instead the Mary Sue is required to earn a stunt bonus with dice equal to the dot cost of the power used? If she fails, it's a flashy and cool action but only has the mechanical potency of a normal similar action, with whatever stunt bonus was earned.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)00:56 No.17343372
What about Powers that aren't actions, but that apply indefinitely, like most of them?
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)01:00 No.17343404

I guess you would get it for a turn, or maybe whatever their Blood Potency equivalent in turns.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)01:03 No.17343434
Lasts the duration of the scene. Costs a Heart Point, or a number of heart points equal to that ability's dot cost. Sound good?

I don't know about giving them the spells, but giving them the abilites would be good. Maybe they can use Charm by spending a Heart point (without the normal complications that magic would involve, and using Heart instead of Enchantment) or they're treated as being constantly under the effects of the Attraction spell. Or both.
    >> Anonymous 12/27/11(Tue)01:05 No.17343456
So their one-dot power, (call it "Enchanting"?) gives them the effect of Attraction and lets them use a form of Charm. Their Five dot Power ("Do Anything Better"?) lets them mimic other abilities at the cost of heart points and/or stunts.

I hope LawfulNice turns up soon to give his thoughts on this stuff.

I love the idea of the Mary Sue exaltation having a "flaw" to regain there resource stat and the real problem of being compelled to destroy other Mary Sues. This leaves one problem though what if to players both want to play Mary Sues? I propose that this is allowed and gets around the highlander thing one of two ways. One they are required to "try" and "kill" each other but they are allowed to be laughably and comically ineffectual if some other force (read excuse) makes them work together say a greater enemy or a common ally. Alternately they could be "sisters" or some other such BS that explains why they both make each other seem more "awesome" so killing them would not be the Sueish thing to do.

also magical girls should be a separate exalt and cover the Kamin rider/Beetle Borg/Powerranger aspect two.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/11(Wed)15:33 No.17358945
Maybe Mary Sue Highlander-ism could more fluff than crunch? Although there might need to be a mechanical benefit for fighting other Sues. OH, and they should be hard to kill. That's a thing that the Immortals and Mary Sues definitively have in common.

Oh, and I suppose Super Sentai is basically the male equivalent of magical girls.
    >> Anonymous 12/28/11(Wed)15:37 No.17358971
The weakness aspect is good. Maybe stuff like throwing a shitfit if someone doesn't listen to them.
For the Highlander aspect, I think it would make sense if Mary Sues could gain power by killing each other and could sense each other's presense (Though not exact location).

For transforming characters, I think there should be a masquerade mechanic.
