(Housekeeping: Quest before Xmas? Yes. Quest right after? No. Why? A friend I've not seen in years is going to be in town, so there will be much drinking and revelry)

We have just, with help from the fragment of the Xel'Naga worldship we "acquired" from the UED, rediscovered Brane Slipstream travel, which allows for an unprecedented speed of transport. The new engine can safely make the journey between the Koprulu Sector and UED space in less than a minute, where conventional Warp travel has taken weeks.

We are justly proud of this accomplishment, and the possibilities of its application are numerous.

Meanwhile, traveling by the old method, the three cryo-frozen samples of the Dyles Entity tadpoles are nearing the Koprulu Sector. We had plans to inspect them in Protoss space, in the hopes that it could spark a war between the two powers, but we haven't decided yet what we would be trying to learn from the little creatures.

Do we have any leftover 5th dimensional materials from the arbiter we kludged into our shiny new pseudo-heighliner? If so we should begin trying to reverse engineer it so we can mass-produce it

Labbrate is already on it. It's not the cheapest process, and it's not entirely reliable, yet, but Labbrate has been able to collect and hold onto several...well, 'units' of fifth-dimensional material for our use.

No, the correct answer is to pretend to be VoidGate and install it in ZergWorld, and warp it away from Aiur. Forget heighliner, we've got a moon. And let's go ahead and get the toss and Dyles to fight, I'm in an agreeable mood today.

Excellent! Just to satisfy my curiosity, how quickly are we able to build heighliners at this rate, and how big are they compared to our capital ships?

Oh, and let's try to figure out how the Dyles hive mind works so we can try to disrupt it

Given the logistical and strategic advantages that this would afford our forces, this should be made a priority construction project, right after nukes.

Have our Science Corps begin design of a mass transport heighliner that can ferry troops and smaller ships within it.
Begin a project of retrofitting 5th-dimensional support structures into our capital ships so that they can support the slipstream drive.

Talk with Warbrate and Labbrate on the possibility of creating a new capital ship design; a mass carrier and nuke boat, that carries massive amounts of nukes, wraiths, and other fighter craft and organisms as the new centerpiece of our force projection capabilities.
    >> Cerebrate Anon 12/07/11(Wed)21:30 No.17139049
    >>17138906
We can do that. Do we want to try to get information out of the samples, or just awaken them as bait?

BFZ's voted for trying to work out how they're connected to the hive.

    >>17138953
How large would these heighliners be (in particular, how many ships are you planning to carry inside)?

Retrofitting the capital ships will require a complete overhaul, as their old drives will need to be removed and the new drive built into the ship. We are careful not to think about this when Accountantbrate is paying attention.

Here's another vote to try to understand the Dyles Hivemind and how it functions.

And you're saying that we really CAN sneak a construction team onto ZergWorld, secretly install a slipstream drive and the necessary dimensional braces, and then have it shoot away from Aiur and leave the Protoss wondering what the Hell just happened?
If so, I'm all for it.

Let's do that then so we can build more heighliners, faster. We can simply jump them to an uninhabited nearby system (with a cloaklord or something in it to act as a beacon). After jump, we have our transported units disembark and standard warp jump to wherever while the heighliner jumps back for more passengers.

It's not like we have no choice but to jump our heighliners into systems we own or are involved in

Cyberbrate runs the numbers, and spends a few hours working out the specifics of how to install a drive core into a moon, undetected, surround it with extradimensional materials, and then hurl it across space. It comes up with a plan. It's very risky, especially since we are new to fifth-dimensional materials, but it might work.

Unfortunately, Accountantbrate has finally caught wind of what we intend to do. It objects. Vehemently. It begins listing our resources, and the costs involved with our present plans, and concludes that we simply cannot afford to proceed with all of these plans. If we intend to build heighliners, retrofit our capital ships, or reclaim Zerg World, we will not have the supplies to do either of the other two anytime soon if we wish to keep our fleet and colonies in working order. Production on our Nuke Worlds will have to stop immediately, regardless.

(Discuss your options, and roll 1d20 for each of the Dyles samples you want to dissect. Maximum of 3d20, obviously)

I'd be inclined to agree with Accountantbrate on this one. While ZergWorld is pretty kickass, it seems to be more of a luxury item at this point.

A better idea would be to streamline the production of Nth-dimension materials so we can warp faster than anyone else by several magnitudes of order.

Also, rolling to dissect the first sample.

This way, Dyles seems threatening to the protoss because he can apparently strike without warning at their most important worlds. The planet Gyras floats lazily in space, the only planet of its sun. A orbital platform repairs ships that aren't able to reach Ash'Arak, and refuels those heading to further reaches of the Empire. Further out, the system's asteroid belt disguises the arrival by warp of a carrier, unscheduled and uninvited.

Aboard the carrier, Zerg agents begin the process of unfreezing three small, amphibian creatures. Normally, this is a routine operation, but the creatures we frozen in haste, and so they must be thawed with extreme care. As if to underscore the delicacy of the situation, the first creature squeals out in psionic pain as it seizes and dies, its body incapable of withstanding the stress of revival.

Taking much more care, the second and third samples are revived without issue, and contained before they can attempt to leap at and attach themselves to their captors. They are aware, and likely bringing their larger brethren for vengeance.

But for now, they are alone and at the mercy of the Swarm.

(Roll 2d100 to see how the experimentation goes)

Our operations are not successful. The first tadpole barely survives our incisions, but yields almost nothing. We do discover a network of miniscule tentacles in the creature, but we have no idea how they might relate to the hivemind of the species.

The second one fares even worse. Immediately upon slicing through its outer skin, the thing's tentacles flail through the opening as another psionic squeal pierces the air, and it dies. Even dead, it yields no answers.

No. In a stroke of genius, Internbrate alerts the diagnostic AIs of the situation. They spring into action (well, we assume they do. We have no idea what they do, or how, but the data loss stops), painting the screens with error messages.

After a few hours of closing error messages and responding to desperate calls for maintenance teams, we finally get back to where we were. It seems that a lot of data has been lost, but we can attempt to look through what is left.

What we find is heavily corrupted, but pieces of duty rosters, personnel files, and inter-office memos are available. There is also something we inexplicably desired with burning intensity: a mostly-intact interactive holographic diagram of the ship's long-lost plumbing, sewage containment, and water treatment facilities. They appear to have been constructed to accommodate a population of several hundred thousand.

Now the big question, how were GIANT CRYSTALS used in the waste management system?

Is any of the recovered information of any use to us?

What, is it wrong that the sole reason for my interest in the waste management system was to see how CA could cram in Xel'Naga magic crystals? I say the "pipes" were crystals... or something.

Who wants to bet they use fifth dimensional materials in their waste management systems?
Let's get on looking for new ways of engineering.

Of COURSE there were giant crystals.

We can't work out whether they had any kind of purpose, but damned if there aren't some huge-ass crystals going on in this plumbing system.

    >>17141401
It...does not appear so, unless we have a particular need for a massive waste reclamation facility.

(Yeah, the Ops folder was where you were going to find the schematics for a Warp network, but I jumped the gun on that one...)

(Alright, I'm out. Got early work in the mornin'. Just going to stay up until this delightful Disney movie is done. I've always wondered why Genie didn't give him an actual kingdom, so he could be a real prince instead of just making him LOOK rich. He didn't wish to look like a prince. He wished to BE a prince)

Nah. Carbon fiber pipes. There are just gigantic crystal spires in the middle of the reservoirs. Jutting up completely at random.

    >>17141474
    Pffft. That would be silly.

Who knows, maybe we could adapt the ancient Xel'Naga plumbing systems to create a massive filtration system to help de-tadpole the worlds Dyles has terraformed.

Oh, and Genie is clearly psychic; he foresaw his actions would help him become princess Jasmine's fiancee, making him a prince by default. Or the Sultan adopted him as a prince so there would be no impropriety in having his daughter marry a thief and lowborn commoner.

I don't know. Genie seems genuinely surprised at several points over essential plot points. I don't think he knew beforehand that he was super-indirectly granting the wish.

They don't know it's from the future, though. They think it's just part of being bugfuck crazy after spending ten thousand years in an oil lamp.

Wait, did we have oil lamps ten thousand years ago? Genie is clearly a time traveler, problem solved.

Holy Fuck. I'm away from /tg/ for well over a year and Zerg Quest is still going?

I really don't have the time to go back and read through the entirety of the archives, can I get some kind of quick summary on what the fuck has happened since... I dunno, Zerg Quest IV?
    >> Big Fat Zergling 12/08/11(Thu)02:24 No.17141649
    >>17141618
We're wrapping up for the night so you've got a week to go through the archives at http://suptg.thisisnotatrueending.com/archive.html?searchall=zerg+quest

As a summary: we mostly got control of the (stupid) urges to put cocks on everything and rape everyone we meet, the overmind is dead, but we took over, Kerrigan has her own allied but independant faction of zerg, the confederation has been handled, the protoss are non-aggressive with us (for now) and the UED is busy getting their asses handed to them by a rival hive mind type entity whom we are at war with.

    >> Big Fat Zergling 12/08/11(Thu)02:28 No.17141690
    >>17141664
Yup. Near as we can figure, it's a lot like the original zerg larvae; burrowing into/attaching themselves to a host creature and adding their psychic distinctiveness to their own.

We don't know much more than that because so far we've failed goddamn hard every time we've tried to capture specimens to study

Not a player of the game. I forgot to ask Cerebrate something and am back after being gone for hours.

Cerebrate; how much of the game would an incoming player be expected to know? Its feasible that a new arrival may know nothing or know very little. Also what is the link to the site with the archive? I lost it when you gave it previously.
