32 KB Gods and Mortals Anonymous 11/26/11(Sat)21:10 No.17030999
Mortals fascinate the gods: the way in which these insignificant specks seem to share all of the emotions of their deities -- love, jealousy, pride, and a myriad of others -- seems almost inconceivable. No less so is the zest with which they live their short lives, seemingly oblivious to the crushing mortality that they labor under. The fact that despite these handicaps, they can still devote themselves to abstract goals such as justice, cooperate by the hundreds or thousands to achieve great works (when divine pantheons of even half a dozen seem eternally cursed with clashes and factions), is a source of amazement to those gods who pay attention to their charges.

Fewer gods truly understand the importance of these mortals to themselves, for without them there would be no worship, no prayers, and no Belief to shape the impersonal universe into divine forms that the races can comprehend, bargain with, and venerate. All deities rapidly learn that the more worshipers they have, the more power they develop, but few press beyond that and come to understand that they themselves are entirely the product of these mundane creatures -- for a being with the pride and power of a god, those are frightening thoughts.

But you have learned. For uncounted eons, your form has been that of a spirit in The Well -- an aimless, churning intelligence without form. Existence was dark and solitary, without purpose . . . until the new races came.

Their voices were faint at first, but steadily grew stronger. One, and then many. They call to you, beg your aid, promise you worship in exchange for survival, power, protection, wealth, knowledge, or freedom.

Even now, their words resonate in the endless void of The Well, and you now know you are strong. Strong enough to escape. To manifest.

    WHICH RACE DO YOU CHOSE?

    OVERVIEW:

You are a god. You are sustained and powered by the faith generated by each of your your individual followers, known as Belief. Belief is the resource you spend which allows you to create miracles. Miracles, in turn, generate further belief by enriching the lives of your followers and reminding them of your glory.

Gameplay will take place in turns known as seasons. Four seasons make a year. During each season, you have the ability to task your followers with specific duties, perform miracles, or do as you please. You are, after all, a god - and your will be done.

Voting on the choice of race begins now, I'll allow time for discussion and questions as well.

    Perhaps another time.

Inbued with the power of the songs lifted in your honor, you manifest before your chosen people, the Hinds.

Your High Priestess is a young, cheerful doe by the name of Helili. She leads a small band of a fledgling race of deer fey who inhabit the deep forest.

When you appear amongst the ring of plump mushrooms where Helili dances, you appear as nothing more than a formless glow. Her eyes widen to see you, however, and the brightly colored garlands of flowers and tinkling bells draped in her antlers nearly shake loose as she jumps excitedly.

"You're here! You heard our singing and you came! I knew you would come!"

She looks about, as if trying to discern your presence, but finds nothing. In truth, you are not truely there. You have neither form nor purpose. This will have to be rectified if you ever intend to be worshiped properly.

    WHAT IS YOUR PRIMARY DOMAIN?

Joy won? I think Order makes the most sense with the way they perform rituals-song and dance are very orderly and rehearsed, and they primarily perform them during scheduled times that they can observe.

Not to mention that they follow a reproductive season, which is even more scheduling.

You are now the god of joy, with secondary purview over common sense, alcohol, and traps. It's really not such a strange combination, you think. It suits you, after all.

Helili seems happy enough about it, anyway.

Fledgling god as you are, you must now decide how you will interact with the world. What is your preferred form of miracle?

Creation: Creation miracles bring things into being
Transformation: Transformation miracles physically alter things
Destruction: Destruction miracles destroy or kill things
Control: Control miracles mentally alter people and creatures

As you speak, you watch Helili's mouth silently move with your words, her brow knitted as she commits this to memory. When you are done, she grins and claps.

"The forests be our place, our home of joy. Let all those, save those that would mean us great harm, be enraptured in delight here. Merriment is my gift to you."

At this, she beams with such forcefulness that you can nearly see her molars.

Finally, you announce "Be excellent to each other."

Helili jumps onto her hind legs, prancing for a moment before coming back down to the ground. "Yay! I'll make sure I tell everyone! They'll be so happy! We're all so happy you're here now. It was so quiet and lonely before, but now everything will be better!"

Helili runs off towards the forest, bounding between the dark stands of trees.

I'd say we should have a tradition in the near future where we produce a hero/champion with the High priestess

Anyway to be more serious, our first miracle should probably be creating a Garden full of alcoholic plants and fruits that hibernate during all season beside Spring, make it a landmark for our migrating people to return to, maybe planting the seed for the start of what could be called a home.

Not right now perhaps, but we eventually need to turn this place into a deathtrap for any invaders, like those knobgobblers. You are a god of traps, teach them to make traps and then trap the entire motherfucking forest.

Yes, the hinds are not a warlike people. This way, they don't actually have to fight directly, just make any invasion impractical. and costly. If an army marches in, hinds start running and arming the traps that fill a dozen per square meter. The forest become a meat grinder, a terrible meat grinder where the soldier never see their enemy only the devious machinations that swallow a dozen of their comrades at a time and generally play with their heads.

Break their spirits without risking a single deerbutt and without letting them ever see the misery they cause, as it would surely break their spirits just as hard.

Maybe it's part of a tradition. Before each day's "revelry," a host is declared. The party is thrown in this host's honor, praising them for what they do. Each individual's first time as "host" is on the day they come of age. In this way, not only are the parties joyous events, but they also bring extra joy to others. Don't think of it as a motive, OOC it's a motive. IC it's just spreading cheer and joy for cheer and joy's own sake. As a traditional act of humility, the host praises the community.

So, a new man or woman is praised for his or her achievements as a child, speed in learning and growing, and his or her future prospects. In turn, the host praises his parents for raising him or her, his teachers and mentors, his neighbors and friends.

    It is Summer, year 1.

    You have 200 followers.
    You currently have 50 belief.

You have 1 black token and 1 white token.

You may give your black token a task for this season. Your white token, being newly established, only has the free time to conduct basic activities such as relocation or doing nothing.

Tasking your white token with "doing nothing" gives it the chance to turn into a productive black token.

You may also perform miracles as you so desire.

Friend of fate here, been helping with the quest. A few things for you guys to mull over until the next time: The setting for this is in like the early days of the world. Like, humans are mucking about with bone spears and thatch huts and shit. Everyone is primitive and tribal, and probably doesn't think of the world as being all that large. This tribe of hinds only numbered about 100 people until the deity came along, mostly due to forest predators. The forest is probably filthy with wolves and bears and such. Hinds aren't excellent fighters as it said in the overview but that's why they turned to the deity.

There might be other races (or hinds) in the forest doing their own thing. Possibly worshiping their own gods, what our god of joy and wine wants to do about that is up to you.
