    412 KB Fairy Warband Quest 9 - Entire Quest Recap Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/20/11(Sun)23:25 No.16977593
You are Trixie Buttercup, fairy warband leader. Fairies are made of magic and immune to harm from all sources but magic and magnets. Upon their deaths, fairies burst into sparkles that other fairies can use to increase their own power.

Your warband has evicted an opposing group from their tree, which generates fairies. After moving in, you researched putting fairy sparkles into beetles, a queen bee, and a drone (rendering them magical and obedient, and causing minor physical changes). You also began to dig straight down, after suspecting that the source of the tree's magic was underground. Eventually, you discovered a shiny, brittle, rock-like object of indeterminate size, which you believe to at least relate to the magic's source. Aside from certain setbacks (a giant, murderous worm, several cave ins, and swarms of blobs streaming forth from a crack in the shiny thing) the magic hole has led to some important resources (a medium sized magic mushroom farm, a great deal of magic giant worm leather, and shiny thing shards).

You are at the tree and everything is currently going as well as it ever is.

I think I need to make a magic items equivalent of codex.jpg, since you have three and will probably get more. Not happening at the moment, though. For right now, you have a magic worm-leather garrote that glows faintly, a magic rock shard that hums, and a magic wooden disc that makes the bearer sticky while being incredibly easy to drop. Pretend that's an image.

I'd like to try to move things forward a shitload this thread, since I feel like we're stagnating (feel free to confirm or deny). It would be nice to start off with some long-ish term goals ("Mass produce decorated sticks, acquire 50 girlz and order them to attack the fairy queen, etc") and then I could fast-forward to the bit where you try them, barring interruptions.

Update that I forgot: You ordered the crack in the shiny thing sealed up. A crew of fairies stuffed wood chips into the crack, then filled the remainder of the space with collection bags, leaves, and grass. Every once in a while a blob makes it through, but they can't actually do so quickly enough to be any threat.

So how are the flowers we planted in the pit doing? Do they smell magical yet?
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/20/11(Sun)23:33 No.16977632
Close examination of the flowers shows small buds underneath the leaves that might be tiny pods. The flowers themselves smell no more or less magical than the surroundings.

    Long term goals, let's see...

well, I had WANTED to bring our goods to freeport and check out fairy society after we got a raid or two on surrounding fairies in. but there are many fewer of those than I expected.

So, I suppose my vote is wait until we have saved up enough sparkles for a small caravan of like four dudes to go to freeport, and bring some of our honey and worm leather shit for sale. oh, and FLOWER HAT and DECORATED STICK too.

    >>16977606
Long-term goals... ultimately, what we need to do is hold out while we accumulate more sparkles. We have a sparkle income over time here, and no realistic means of increasing that income- since it seems the broken giant rock is producing most of the magic, and we're not going to be able to move that. I suppose that we could attempt to dig under other trees, find other giant rocks underground, and bash them open to see if there's magic inside... but at a guess that endeavor would be largely futile and hugely time-consuming.

Since our organized neighbors have been established much longer than we have, it's reasonable to think that they are much more powerful than us; since we have an extremely valuable resource if they discover it they'll probably come to kill us off and take it. We've had one information leak already, but she doesn't know about our tree so far as we know so we might be safe.

So... get more girlz, accumulate more sparkles, conduct patrols and slaughter, then seize the sparkles of any other fairies we encounter in the area. I don't think I'll be confident enough to begin association with other large, organized fairy groups until we're personally built on maybe a hundred sparkles and our seconds are built on at least thirty each, preferably fifty. Then our third tier are built on half or a third of that.

While that's ongoing... keep expanding and fortifying our home, I suppose. See if we can make the whole surrounding area into a series of traps, establish multiple well-concealed outposts in the trees that can signal one another to transfer information long distances quickly, and carve out more small chambers inside our home tree to live in so that we're not overly exposed to the weather.
    >> Anonymous 11/20/11(Sun)23:45 No.16977713
Also, lets find and enchant a spider. The sticky webs can be used for traps, and the non-sticky web can be used for decent cloth/armor, especially if the webs of a magic spider are also magic.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/20/11(Sun)23:59 No.16977789
Several weeks go by. You store sparkles, a concept that the other fairies need explained to them several times.

The crack in the shiny thing produces no serious problems. You gain a few blobs for Bloomstar to experiment on, but the few that end up in the collection bags usually find their way out before being collected.

The queen bee lays eggs, which hatch and eventually begin metamorphosing with no help from you.

You find a web and sparkle a spider. The magical resulting creature has a shiny surface, like a soap bubble, and its abdomen becomes larger and rounder. The spider sets up a web high in the tree. When harvested for silk, the spider rebuilds its web in a more difficult to reach place. After a few days of trying, you reliably train it to produce silk on command, eliminating the source of this slow, mild conflict.

You expand the tree's main room, using magic scraping tools, and carve out a second one as well, steering clear of the outer, living wood.

    Girlzcount: 36
    Sparkles: 4
    Metamorphosing bees: 3
    Spiders: 1

So, time to plan an expedition. Who are you bringing or sending? Aside from worm-leather bags full of worm-leather clothing, worm-leather crafts, a flower hat, and a decorated stick, are you taking any equipment?

    >>16977707
Aside from the expansions, this is essentially "keep turtling." The question I was trying to imply was "How much stuff would you like to build up before you go seek out something to interact with?"
    >> Anonymous 11/21/11(Mon)00:02 No.16977807
I think we need to start doing what any warlord needs to do.

Establish a system of patrols and raids all around us. We need to find and slaughter every fairy camp around us so we can bathe in the sparkles.

    >>16977807
Already done. In the couple of months that you have lived in the tree for, you have found one wandering group of fairies with no known affiliation to others.

If you want trouble you're going to have to really look for it.
    >> Anonymous 11/21/11(Mon)00:10 No.16977872
    >>16977831
Well I want to really look for it.
Scouting in a spiral pattern all around the tree expanding outwards. The scouting party is supported by replacements and messengers travelling in straight lines out from the tree at predetermined times.

We should just keep expanding either until it's totally impossible to keep communication with the tree or we find something to kill.

We should probably be with the scouts at least half of the time but still maintain a presense at home to make sure no one forgets who's boss.

Well, the problem is that of information. I bet we could buy that.

Test to see if the spider silk is good for anything. If it's about as worthless as worm leather, make clothes from it. Also make flower hats and decorated sticks.

How many people do we want to send? Well, I want trixie to go herself, because I want first hand knowledge of the happenings there. We should leave bloomstar and twinkle in charge temporarily with EXPRESS ORDERS not to form themselves into two tribes and start warring each other the moment we leave.

Wibble, twitter, and flitter will be our retinue- a perfect blend of backup-assassin, debuffer, and person-who-needs-sparkles-badly-and-will-be-inevitably-sacrificed.

No girlz. because the trip costs a fucking sparkle per person. Also, bring one extra sparkle, in case our pack-beetle needs to pay a sparkle.

So, we're bringing: one hexagon or more of honey, worm goods, silk goods, flower hats, and decorated walking sticks. sound good?

    >The scouting party is supported by replacements and messengers travelling in straight lines out from the tree at predetermined times.
We can supplement or modify this with the proposed system of concealed observation/signaling outposts in the trees- and maybe combine THAT with our new spider; we can harvest spider silk to use as ropes for connections between the trees when their branches aren't close enough to easily traverse. We could maybe use some sort of signal flags between the outposts periodically to communicate basic information and have messengers and replacement shifts move between them less frequently. Hopefully we'll be able to extend our area of observation and influence quite a bit- several times the distance one can see from the top of a tall tree, at least.

    >>16977956
I second this- in the time it takes to assemble the caravan goods, we should begin assembling a system of invisible spiderweb treebridges and watch stations, each within sight of at least two others.

Then, all we need is some kind of signal language
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/21/11(Mon)00:24 No.16977982
(This is what I get for making plans based on early posts)

Your record population makes setting up relay posts easy. The area around the tree is thoroughly patrolled, but you can cover a large area constantly and relay any reports of strange fairies back to the home base quickly. Bloomstar suggests dyed signal leaves that can be aimed at the correct relay post and kept hidden otherwise.

The system pays off after a few days, when you get some information by signal leaf. Five fairies, between outposts 4 and 5 (the furthest, about half a mile away), traveling across the line of outposts, without noticing the sentries.

Okay, let's not JUMP THE FUCKING GUN on this one.

send the teleporters in first to observe from the treetops quietly. have bloomstar and twinkle each lead a group of 3 girlz and one of the itter-twins. The teleporters will relay the exact location of the enemies via warping, and the groups will sneak up around them pincer-style. The teleporters will attack from the remaining two directions the others don't attack from, and will act as outrunners if any attempt to escape.

    good? any alterations?

Also, bring nets with the teleporters. We can warp above them with the nets to disable two handily.

Prepare to bushwhack. Assemble a crack team of top assault troops- Trixie, Bloomstar, Twinkle, and Wibble. Bring Twitter and Flitter for ranged backup. Also bring a dozen or so girlz to fill out our ranks and distract them from the important enemies.

If possible, attempt to ambush them when they're going through someplace difficult to escape from, but failing that just attack when they're doing something that focuses their attention on each other- arguing or playing, maybe?- and from multiple directions if possible.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 11/21/11(Mon)00:40 No.16978132
You do your best to calculate where the fairies will be when you arrive and set off with Wibble, invisible, with the other two groups following at a safe distance.

Eventually, you see them. You're unimpressed, but you haven't seen any fairies aside from your own in a while. After getting the two other teams in position, you spring the ambush. Two fairies go down immediately, netted, and both you and Wibble hit the ground running (and visible) after your aerial teleport. The remaining three fairies charge you. Two of them attempt to grab Wibble, and one tries to tackle you and essentially bounces off. Bloomstar, Twinkle, and their teams charge in, from opposite directions, yelling.

This looks like it was overkill. Any final orders?

I'm thinking that we and Wibble go with her, invisible, to where she said she was hatched. Where there's one pod there are likely to be others, and a second tree would be utterly invaluable. In the meantime, the rest of the team should return to the tree and maintain things here- we shouldn't be gone terribly long. Put our sparkles into storage.

If we run into any trouble, Trixie and Wibble can pull out unseen and leave the hatchling here to her fate. And if it's only minor, the pair of us are both pretty deadly and can take out most enemies on our own.

You head home, making the last few hours of the trip (uneventfully) in the dark.

Spider-cloth is crude, but useable. You already have plenty of practice making ropes and nets from wild spiders. The main improvement here is convenience (and a spider). The sparkle rock still slices through the cloth.

The girlz who are up and about take turns sitting on the new fairy.

Some of the fairies have adde images of the fight against the blobs to the wall carving area.

Aside from the usual What Now question, there are four sparkles to divide up.

    GUYS

    GUYS

you know how we could get our fairies to be an effective fighting force?

Using our MASSIVE sparkle pool, we can shit out enough arrows for each of the girls to have an arrow or two, even with all the knives around. If we equip a squad of 15 or so of them with an arrow and one arrow in reserve, with us personally forging a new pile after each volley, then we pretty much can fuck shit up.

One sparkle for each of our top four people.

Let's let some time pass, expanding our observation network in accordance with our expanding population. Let the interesting things come to us. Improve our general infrastructure- ensure that observation posts are well-concealed, connected to one another, and that there are a few traps around them so that they can't be assaulted trivially easily. Carve out more rooms in the tree, and since we're connecting the trees to one another now, consider connecting our tree to adjacent trees up in its branches and carving out more fairy houses in those trees as well, so that there will be more places to live.

Work on improving bows, catapults (for flinging people around quickly), and obviously decorations. We also need awesome clothing. Attempt to continue to refine our arts of trapmaking. Have more fairies learn archery, knifethrowing, slinging, or other forms of ranged combat.

Watch to see if we can control those bees, when they hatch into actual bees. That will be important.

You take two of the sparkles, give one to Wibble, and pay Bloomstar one in exchange for a beetle vehicle.

A day later, you receive a sort of catamaran, but with beetles instead of floats. It's a structure made of sticks that can be hoisted onto two beetles, and has a carriage in the middle. "I can do a chariot model, but I'm not sure how well I can make wheels and stuff. I thought this would be easier."

The girlz get fairly good at saturating entire areas with arrows, and reasonable at accurate shooting. Javelin and knife throwing are unpopular, and slinging is disastrous. A group of girlz cannot be trusted to each swing a heavy thing around while looking in another direction.

The bees have hatched. You see a group of them circling the entrance of the hive. They come when called.

Well, our girlz might not be good at knife throwing, but Trixie is already a fair hand at it and should put some effort into becoming better. Carrying around a small brace of shapecrafted knives with which she's deadly accurate could add quite a bit to her combat abilities. Wibble, as our other stealth teleporter, should also master a ranged weapon- her choice which, but she's got to get good with it.

    >The bees have hatched. You see a group of them circling the entrance of the hive. They come when called.
Excellent. Can they support a fairy's weight? It would be nice if we could use them as aerial mounts; they're much faster than our girlz are, as well, so they could help us tie together our network of observation posts and keep things well scouted much more effectively if we can use them that way.

    >You're going to have to be specific.

If possible they should be built to help make the wearer's voice amplified (bull-horn effect). These will be for the six named fairies.

Wooden shields are possible. Wooden armor is too bulky to be practical. You add shields to the list of things to be built.

You summon some plates, and after a few tries and some help, you have a spider silk harness that you can summon a lamellar chest protector into.
