You are two inches tall, purple, and made of magic.

Earlier today, the hollowed out log you call home was attacked by wild hatchling fairies. Your friends, who take orders from you, outfought the attackers. None escaped. You cracked open four of the opposing fairies for the magical sparkles contained within, and demanded that the fifth serve you from now on or suffer the same fate.

Having no choice, she accepted. Her own life story was short, but interesting. She had hatched in a secret location, outside the control of the Queen, who maintains power by controlling the Hatching Tree. A small group of fairies had attempted to round up herself and her clutchmates, but they managed to escape.

Since this is big news, you decided to investigate for yourself. You found the story to be true. Something, has caused new fairies to come into existence far from the Queen's control, and a group of fairies has pounced on the opportunity to gain some unregulated power far from civilization.

Naturally, you led your group on a sneak attack by night where you carried off and hid a pod of fairies. This was interrupted by a patrol, which you outran. A quicker offshoot of the same group gave chase, but your group was able to turn the tables on them, ambushing them and stomping them into their base magical components before the main group of pursuers could catch up.

Your group has just arrived at the hollowed out log you call home, dead tired, but in high spirits. The others are a bit giddy from the combination of tonight's action and the long day.

    You are Trixie Buttercup.

One way or another, you will make your mark on the Fairy Forest.

Obvious things to pursue, as discussed in the previous thread:
-Fortifying your base using bramble patches
-Retrieving the fairy pod that you stole and hid
    -Dealing with Enemy Fairy Base
    -Sleeping

How would you like to proceed?

Jesus christ I was looking all over for this one.

So, am I the first one here, or is there someone to plan with? How big is this breeding pod anyway, something like 10 faeries big? how do we make it work?

We should check how many are at the enemy base with an invisibility flyby. if there's a lot, we focus on recovering the pod we stole. If there are only a few, then, well, they might be ripe for an assault.

It's about four or five fairies big. It was dark.

    >>16720186
The last report (from Wibble, the wild hatchling) put their numbers at fifteen, minimum, with two magic users. After the fight, that gives them eleven, with two magic users, currently, minimum. You have four. Wiping out the enemy base would be a long term goal.

Also, fairies don't have guts. They disintegrate into sparkles when hit too hard.

Allright then, I say we have our minions roll the faerie pod to our log, while we keep an advanced watch with the invisibility. If we see anyone coming, we set up ambush positions around the pod, and intercept any runners. We can't fight straight out yet, don't have the numbers.

You decide to retrieve the pod immediately, prompting a few tired grumbles.

Leading the way, spending only a few instants visible so your allies can follow you at a distance, you set off. By this time, you know the best routes between your log and the hatching grounds, and you find your way without difficulty even in the low light.

Once you start to get close, you hear voices again. Regaining your visibility for a moment, you motion the others to stay back, then wink out of sight and investigate.

The voices belong to a group of three fairies plodding towards the hatching tree, looking dejected.

"I just hope I get to do it. Or at least be there."
"Yeah, it isn't right. Imagine -- treating us like that!"
    "We'll find them."

Movement catches your attention. There's another group of four moving towards the tree as well, and a third group on the other side. It looks like they fanned out to cover more ground, and are heading home.

Here's a not particularly to scale map. You're purple, they're pink, brown is the tree, orange is the pod (hidden).

You wait at a safe distance (inches). The other fairies head back to the tree.

They seem convinced that "Arcanella," who must be in charge, will track down the thieves. There's some speculation as to whether you're part of a larger group, but the three fairies you listen to haven't heard of any other big players in the area.

There are guards posted all around the trunk now, and you can spot one up in the branches as well. But the pod is far enough away that it's probably safe to pick up.

    >>16720467
Fairies aren't aware of opium. They do get high off of mushrooms, but mundane ones won't do. You need the glowy kind. The strategy could work if you had enough, but actually putting it into practice would be tricky.

Well if we're the outnumbered underdogs, we have to learn to get tricky. We need to guerrilla warfare this shit.

We should have one of our fairies (probably Twinkle) dedicated to gathering glowy 'shrooms, henceforth colloquially known as 'Lite Brites', 'Blinkers', etc. and hoarding them for a rainy day.

Failing this, we need some other weapon with which we can even the odds.

What we need is a distraction. I suggest we find a way to at least distract two groups of guards and draw them away from the pod where we shall sneak attack the remaining guards.

To do this I suggest we try and make some sort of disturbance, maybe lure an insect into attacking one of the groups.

Can we use our speed and teleportation to lead the three closest to us to the group of four, and then away? After we do that, we get out of sight, recruit our buds, and finish off the remaining three quietly. Hopefully, this will earn us a clear vector to steal that pod. sound about right to anyone else?

You instruct your allies to start rolling the pod to safety once the distraction is underway before departing, circling around the clearing.

Deciding on using your magic to be as threatening as possible, you pop out from behind a tree, run behind a pebble, then teleport to a different pebble and run towards the first, as if there was a group moving in closer.

Almost as soon as you do, there's a shout from the top of the tree. The guards on the ground look at the lookout, then to where her finger points, and their eyes converge on you. They look suspicious, and head inside. The lookout watches your pebble carefully. A second one soon joins her.

It looks like you didn't have much time left anyway. A group of eight fairies pours out of the base of the tree. A couple are carrying small knives. They raise their heads and scan the general area with their eyes, looking concerned.

Then they split up into two groups of four and carefully circle around the mound of dirt, keeping a safe distance. The first one to see the other side shouts "There's no one here!"

The sun has risen some time ago when you finally wake up. You stretch and walk outside. Bloomstar and Wibble are waiting, slouched over the edge of the log. When you approach, Bloomstar nods and stumbles off to bed.

Now that there is plenty of light, you can see the pod clearly. The shapes of four fairies curled up together are easy to make out. In fact, it might be a bit too easy. The pod has withered a bit now that it has been picked.

Along those lines, maybe we should give the sparkles to the new fairies, and start with the indoctrinatin'? It's hard to split two sparkles four ways, so it's either give it to the new ones or take them both for ourselves.

    You hold out the sparkles.

"If you want to live, take these and obey me forever."

The cowering fairies shrink away from you, but both have trouble keeping their eyes off of the sparkles. The braver fairy slowly crawls towards you, then snatches the sparkle away and clutches it to her chest, breathing a sigh of relief as it dissipates and forms a shiny aura around her. The other one quickly follows her clutchmate's example.

    You should probably:
    -give them some names
    -dress them in something
    And also:
-figure out how you're handling the whole "enemy at least twice your size that wants you dead" thing, both in terms of what you're doing today and in the long run.

Take as long as you feel like, because it's pretty open ended, and also because I'm taking a break, and when I'm done taking a break I'm going to re-color some sprites and update the codex.

You give the new recruits names befitting their station, and declare Bloomstar and Twinkle in charge. You make it clear that they're to turn the new recruits into decent fighters, and come up with as many traps as they possibly can. They look at each other and grin.

Then you leave, determined to find out some exploitable information. You park yourself at the edge of the clearing and wait a few minutes, before you remember that you can get as close as you like, invisible.

The guards aren't encircling the tree anymore. They're crammed under the tree roots. Three of them are physically blocking the entrance tunnel where it is narrowest. The other two are fidgeting around outside, looking uncomfortable.

After about half an hour, there's some activity. A group of six fairies leaves. They drink some dew, and stretch, talking quietly. A couple of them try dancing in a circle around a flower, but they give up after a few seconds. Their hearts aren't in it.

You lie down and make yourself comfortable. A few medium sized groups of fairies leave the tree and re-enter. The guards change infrequently. On one occasion, the guards complain about not being relieved on schedule. They don't move from their spot, however. It's implied from their conversation that they've been given strict orders to physically block the tunnel with their bodies every second, with no exceptions.

In the middle of the afternoon, your efforts pay off. A larger group of fairies leaves the tree to collect nectar and frolic. One of them stands out. She's bright pink, and wears a cape made of feathers, which strikes just the right balance between being fluttery and majestic. She's also just a little bit shinier than the other fairies.

The beginnings of a plan filling your head, you walk home.

You find a big mess, but it could be an encouraging mess. Thing 2 is dangling from a stalk of grass, upside down, ensnared in a net. Thing 1 is squealing and flailing her arms, helplessly trapped in Wibble's headlock. Bloomstar and Twinkle are laughing. Both have strands of spider silk tied to various body parts, and the campsite is covered in various nooses and trip wires.

Bloomstar and Twinkle stand up straight when you approach. Wibble, sitting on Thing 1, salutes.

Bloomstar: "Look at this! When someone touches this bit here... krbloooo!"
Twinkle: "She means the noose catches her ankle."
    Bloomstar: "That's what I said."

this... is not going as amazingly as I had planned. not nearly as amazingly at all.

Anyway, given the number of the leader's group, we should have about sixteen traps at least scattered about, if not more in a big ol' field. Tell them that you're very impressed with the prototypes though, since they seem to work great.

the raid might have to be delayed for a day though, since getting these fairies to complete the trap field and then running them through it a few times sounds like a lot of work.
    >> Narrator !!0z97bVlxXCQ 10/24/11(Mon)03:14 No.16722293
You keep things positive, looking over each trap approvingly. Then you share the plan. A brave volunteer (Twinkle) will lead the enemy's away team through a field of traps set up in advance, while the main force rushes the gate, doing as much damage as possible and hopefully escaping with more pods.

Twinkle grumbles, but you're in charge, and your logic is obvious.

Bloomstar points out that the nets they made might be useful in a fight. They're a little bit unwieldy to use as weapons, but she thinks they must be good for something.

nets? well, we could bring one apiece for the main force and try throwing them during our raid, see how that goes. It will at least confuse them while we fight them normally.

If that doesn't work, we should try having two faeries each hold the side of a net to snare someone later on, once we're not fighting a superior force and we can afford to spend two people subduing a single enemy.

poor twinkle. We should surprise her with a slightly larger cut of the goonshare after the job.

I guess the plan is now to wait until our faeries are done with the traps and the runner is adequately able to dodge through them without getting herself caught.

I guess we should keep one person on rotating lookout duty watching the tree during all this, to ensure they don't make any sudden moves. though, nowhere at all close enough to make out details of what they're doing, just general ideas of their movements.

The traps are nice, but the plan isn't actually executable without any practice.

You lower Thing 2 to the ground, where she squirms out of the net and pretends to not be hiding behind you. Then, you task Bloomstar with making an obstacle course and Twinkle with beating it. They exchange glances.

You and the other three are on rotating spy duty, with instructions to stay at a safe distance. You sit down on a pebble and watch the obstacle course come into existence, occasionally directing Bloomstar to cover a wider area. When you get bored, you throw a net at Thing 2. It's somewhat effective, but a bit hard to control, since it's so light. Thing 2 looks at you, trying to figure out what set you off. You shrug.

The obstacle course shapes up nicely. The first few traps are concealed, and it makes heavy use of obvious, easy to avoid traps that herd the runner towards secondary, more dangerous traps.

Twinkle can navigate it fine, but when you give her a time limit, she starts ending up flat on her face or suspended in the air, to Bloomstar's amusement. After a few hours practice, she can do the entire thing, even if she tries to lure imaginary pursuers in by stepping close to the traps.

Bloomstar is confident that she can rebuild something close to the obstacle course in a different location.

It is late in the afternoon.

How quickly can the new course be built?

Like 30 minutes or so, right? we can crack one out tomorrow morning?

Well, I think our folks have earned a rest, before tomorrow's raid. we want everyone to be fit and strong, after all. We should spend the rest of the day acquiring double rations for dinner. I guess nectar, since that's what fairies eat.

You officially put everyone but the things on nap duty until nightfall. Once it's dark, you poke everyone until they wake up, and do a last minute check before leaving.

The group encounters no patrols, and the traps go up quickly. Soon, they are set to Bloomstar's satisfaction, as well as Twinkle's and of course yours.

    Oh, spell review.

You can teleport six hexes at the cost of one movement point, meaning your effective speed is 12. You can turn invisible, but teleporting cancels the effect for an instant (the round). Fairies in punching distance will also be able to detect you.

    In case that's relevant.

    Sorry.

Twinkle reaches the brush line and dives in. Her fastest pursuers hit the traps. The one on the left (their left) hits a trip wire and falls flat. The other screams as she is lifted into the air, ensnared.

Their leader, who is a tiny bit behind, glances around and shouts "Stop stop stop!" There's an instant of delay between her words coming out of her mouth, and her underlings paying attention.

Well, the trap is sprung and that's as far as they're going I say.

We outnumber them now, launch the attack. try to leap from bushes for double the surprise.

let's see, specifically, I believe all our units are within move range of the enemies, so we can get a charge from the underbrush here. At least, that's what all the goons will be doing.

Trixxie should start running, teleport behind the leader, punch her in the back of the head, and then use her remaining 5 move to get into the area of the trapzone.

Tinkle, well, she should either join the fray or coup de gras the trapped ones before they can untrap themselves. depending on how traps work.

Twinkle turns around and inexpertly mashes her fist into the dangling fairy's face. The impact sends her swinging back and forth.

Another one of the fairies charges in and finds her leg caught in a loop of silk. She tugs at it twice before starting to claw at the knot, one eye on Twinkle.

How fast can we drag an unconscious fairy?

Eh, they're charging us, it's too late to think about prisoners today. Maybe when we take out the main force we will take prisoners.

Sparklerate them all, collect the sparkles, and retreat to behind the trapfield. We can distribute sparkles there if we like

The sound of squished fairies is quite loud. It's certainly audible to the fairies currently rushing towards you.

Sparkles: 23, to be dealt with later.

You regroup behind the brush line. Thing 2 shakes Thing 1 until she rises to her feet unsteadily. You have rather a lot of seconds until your enemies arrive, but your time is limited.

    Plan?

First off, we get behind the trap field. Then, we take our third, eight sparkles. We then give five to twinkle and four to bloomstar, and we have enough for two for all of our new recruits. sound like a good distribution? It's based on the 1/3 for us 2/3 for them rule.

You signal for a retreat, positioning your group well behind the field of traps.

It seems that Arcanella is sending a screen of the comparatively less experienced fairies in first, several inches in front of the main group. When one screams after being launched into the air by a bent blade of grass, she holds up her hand, and the group stops. Then she points straight ahead.

There's a bright flash of light, and a loud bang. Both make you blink. When you open your eyes, there's a flat area of torn up brush in front of the scouts, at least six inches wide. She motions the fairies forward.

Arcanella repeats the process, slowly clearing a wide, flat area for the fairies to walk in safely.

    well absolutely fuck this entirely.

let's get out of here with our loot- the trapfield is 12 tiles wide, we're behind it, and they only took out 6 of the tiles. we have time before they reposition to get the fuck out.

We have to fight them from a direction OTHER than where their heavy gun is facing, and that isn't how we are today.

At base, split the sparkles like >>16723392 suggested. Its a fair split and will reinforce loyalty and recognition that The Great and Powerful Trixie is best fairy.

Having accomplished what you came to, you call for your crew to go home, whispering to Bloomstar and Twinkle to carry Thing 1 between them. They each get under one of her arms and hoist her up.

You leave, the sound of explosions growing fainter behind you.

I'm about ready to stop, but you can wrap things up if you want to.

There's more support for 8/5/etc than anything else.

While I'm not going to make a post pulling everything together tonight, you do successfully go home. Also, Wibble has developed a talent for trickery magic, and Thing 1 has learned to cast basic curses.

Board timezone. Just look at the OP timestamp, and figure out how it translates to local time by comparing a recent post to your time.

That's my preferred method, anyway. Too many chances to fuck up if I convert my timezone to a generic one and then you convert the generic one to yours.
