To put it politely, the crowd has gone insane. Some of the folk are excited, most of them moving towards the new pillar in the square, even faster once word spread who is standing atop the pillar. Others are jilted Old Guard nobles, screaming and raging that they wont so easily be brushed aside, besmirched and insulted. Every last dwarf in the crowd is raging at the sky, cursing that the gods have returned. "Well love, how do you propose that we escape this lovely square?"

You ponder that, as an ever increasing number of men and women who just want to go home now are turned back by angry nobles, folk curious of the arcanist stranded in the center of the square, or simply pushed about by those who are panicking tin the wild crowd. Off in the distance, a group of some 50 massive Lacerta begin moving in. Each of them clad in obsidian armor, runes that are no doubt strengthening the armor glowing brightly. Ancient relics, stolen from Shintjas legions after they fell, immensely valuable, and once again immensely powerful.

You clear your throat, as the massive Lacertan guards continue to work their way through the crowd, peacefully helping people move along with gusts of wind, mild shocks, and shifting cobblestones. "Citizens of Degnar!!!" you bellow, catching more than a few of the folk near you "There is no need to panick, nor reason to be wroth! The return of the arcane is well in hand by the brightest minds in Degnar!! You heard from the lips of our Emperor himself! The threats returning, diseases spreading? Degnar has suffered plagues, and any foe that is new to us, is not new to the Imperial Archives. As we tarry in this square, the Praetor Archivus is more likely than not hard at work seeing to the safety of our homes from these awakening threats! Calm yourselves, and go back to ensuring that our mighty Empire can weather this minor upheaval as the nuisance it is!"

Many of the people look at you quizzically, before they slowly begin to wander off. Of course, a scarce few nobles seem intent on staying, as do some curious onlookers to your addition to the Square, and some dwarves who still taunt the possibly returned gods. The crowd is still thick, but calm enough that you are able to call Spite to you, and hop onto his back along with Jayne.

By the time you reach your barracks, it is late evening. "Justinian, not to force work, but I would recommend that you see to mercenaries, supplies, and any other business you still have for our coming deployment. Janos is nearly done with his report on the IronCoast Lords for you and your fellow Fist Commanders, but that is still a few days off, love." You kiss your aide and wife on the cheek, and continue to stable Spite, and make your way to bed.

    >so, mercs, supplies, or just skip to Janos report?

Two more things that might be worth adding - 1) On top of our normal supplies, let's buy a healthy supply of pitch and maybe ask Degrian what else might be useful to have for defending a siege.

2)I'm tempted to say we should bring the twins along. We'll only have info from Janos' report, which may be old in comparison to what the twins will know about who we're facing.
    >> Tactical Routine Omicron !oiqMeATbAg 10/11/11(Tue)22:50 No.16597023
FOR THE RECORD: I am against bringing the twins along on campaign. For one it will look weird to others, and for another it's too many chances for them to escape.

While you're concentrating on them, we should really be concentrating on haremizing Catalina.

    >you have 100000 requisition, food for your maniple is 20000

Early the next morning you set off for the Nobles Causeway. Gone is the mad bustle of the early war, and the overcrowded maddness of the midwar. What you see before you as you stalk the clean, well-paved roads, are vetran representatives of experienced bands. Many of them no doubt fusions of several nearly obliterated bands. After a while, Sansa, Jayne and yourself all agree on which bands are even worth considering, as you sit at an open-air tavern, trying your best to ignore the torrent of gossip about the return of the arcane while you eat, and think.

We do some bargaining to hopefully reduce prices, buy us a nice supply of pitch to use in general for the upcoming battles and then spend any left over money after we find out what Janos has to say and maybe check out the ones at Flumenos or whatever it was called. I suppose I should comment on this. I'm not even thinking about adding the twins to the harem when I suggest bringing them. They're a mobile source of info on Uurlanth lords with likely more current info than Janos. Furthermore, they've had a chance to escape earlier and they didn't take it and even if they did escape, it would go against what their mistress told them to do.

As far as it looking odd... Yeah it probably will but I don't care if it gives us a source of info we can use in the campaign.

I intend to get more later but I just wanted to get a few units I knew we could use period. We might not need a heavy amount of cavalry depending on what Janos said but we can always use line units.

It doesnt take long to negotiate the three units you are certain that you will be hiring. Jaxor Morlan is in a particularly cheery mood, and happily barters down to 35000 dragoons for his only combat ready wing of griffon riders. The captain of the Trilius Defenders recognizes you fairly quickly, and happilly agrees to 3000 dragoons for her battalions services. Finally, you barter with the captain of the RedSteel Elites, the grizzled dwarf never takes his one-eyed gaze from you, steadfastly holding his ground even as he admits that your fame and prowess make him eager to work with you. He agrees to 4500 dragoons, and promises that his dwarves will be ready to march within a week, which works out perfectly, as that is all the more time you have in the city.

The next day you find yourself in the largest meeting room of your barracks, Malcius, Janos and Gabriel gathered about, along with your aides. "The IronCoast lords are violent, skilled... and luckily for us, men of honor. The regions major Lord, Jacob Hastten is a skilled attacker, and stubborn, though old. His sons are both cut of the same cloth as their father, separately named The Jackal, and The Bear by their soldiers. They almost never fight as a group. Rivers Edge is the seat of the Order of the Winged Lance, the greatest of the knightly orders."

"Knightly orders?" Malcius asks, clearly confused.

Janos sighs "I see Justinian was not the only commander to gratuate the academy without learning all he should have. The IronCoast Lords do not knight individuals, or any men. Knights are members of orders, usualy from tender ages on. The orders keep to their own codes, and, while not violent towards each otehr, they most certainly are not amicable either. the Winged Lance is the larges of the region, and most traditional in its organization. Longswords, Lances, horses and pegasi."

Your majordomo stops to breath, and stretch a bit before continuing "Lord Turrin Mern of Soothcove is the gentlest of the IronCoast Lords. The slowest to stir to anger, but once he is roused, his rage is blacker than the midnight sky of his house banner. Large, powerful and cunning, he is more likely to have you defeat yourself than strike out at you. His city plays host to the largest concentration of knights from the Order of the Granite Shield. They keep mostly to maces, hammers, flails, any other blunt weapon you can think of. They prefer to ride uursan, and wear the heaviest armor available."

Gabriel sighs "And I had been hoping for a simple conquest after breaking the siege of Estrok."

Janos shakes his head slowly, before drinking from his water, and continuing "Drans Ferry is ruled by Hans Jaeger. In combat, he prefers to establish an unassailable defence, while striking out with elven archers, and members of the Order of the Golden Flame. As one would expect of an order seated in a predominantly elven city, they strike with speed and precision, and are typically as patient, or more so, than the lord currently ruling Drans Ferry. Javelins, Spears, and longswords mostly, typically riding Valkeries or Velociprey trained to leap more than run."

You sight deeply, before asking "Is Drans Ferry not the northernmost of the IronCoast Lords cities?"

Lord Peter Stout is fat, rich, and lazy, but he is not stupid, nor his captains and sons inept. they will defend their small, rich city fiercely. In the past, they were known to sally forth on Velociprey and swift horses, striking their foes, then retreating into the unsure grounds of the delta. By the time most get to grips with their heavy infantry, the force is already doomed. In his city the order of the Steel Claw makes its home. They ride velociprey trained to carry heavily armored men, wield axes, and show no mercy. The smallest of the major orders, but also the harshest and most vicious."

Malcius scratches at the back of his head "How is it that you know how these men fight?"

Janos shakes his head "Many lords came to blows years before this war began, and that is the only reason this war started but a few years, not a decade, ago."

I think we should hit Lord Mern of Smoothcove first so he can't take to the field.

Classic Blitzkreig tactics for him. Nighttime infiltrators open holes in his defenses which the rest of the forces proceed to decimate. We'll have to run our guys hard and fast to beat him, or else he'll have his shit together and get stuck in.

I'm actually thinking we should hit Drans Ferry first. We're going to be breaking the siege of Estrok first right? So we're already going to be pretty close to that city and that lord is known to like playing defensive. I think we should hit him before he's had the chance to fortify his city to his liking.

I have to agree with your assessment.
Also, there's the river that Dran's Ferry sits on.
Could we possibly fight from either the opposite bank or from on top of the river? Could Degrian modify our siege engines to have the range necessary to still be able to hit the city walls from that range?
It would negate our cavalry, but it would do the same to the enemy's velociprey.

Worth finding out. Depends on the scale of the map so that's something Pax will have to tell us. Safe to assume we won't be able to attack from across the river though. We should probably ask Janos to put any bridges or crossings on the map if he knows them.

You scratch at your chin "Do we know it the IronCoast Lords are taking part in the siege of estrok at the moment?"

GAbriel shakes his head "No, they are recouping losses after being replaced on the southern front several months ago."

Malcius takes a big gulp from his cup "So, they should be at full strength, or very near by now."

Janos nods "And as a mostly militant group, they all have the largest legal armies, according to the kings law. Though I doubt they are at full strength. They prefer armored sergeants and men at arms to levies and sergeants. Excluding defensive purposes, they prefer cavalry charges to arrow volleys."

You sigh, before taking a drink yourself and interjecting "We will be outnumbered sorely. Defeating the knightly orders, and quickly breaching walls will be our priority."

Malcius nods "Perhaps your arcanists can help with that? I know that the uurlanthi girl you recruited can create... interesting, creatures. Perhaps some for sieges?"

Gabriel shakes his head "Not good enough for the Knightly orders keeps. Solitary fortresses away from the cities, if my memory serves. Very well built."

Janos nods again, responding "I would recommend that you avoid the Orders Keeps if you can. And, Justinian, if you do treat with the Duchy, try to have them send a commander with skills in siege warfare."

"Precursors, Janos, tour equivalent in the Duchy Warhost are Precursors." Malcius corrects him off-handedly.

Huh. The knightly orders aren't inside the cities then? We need to know where they are on the map. Although he recommends against it, we might need to engage them to remove a threat from our flanks. It's also very annoying that none of these lords are involved in the siege... Not only are we outnumbered, we're going to be weakened from breaking the siege.

"At this point, I'm suggesting we immediately move to take Drans Ferry once we break the siege. Take out their most defensive minded lord before he has too much time to fortify the city once he learns the siege of Estrok is broken."

Janos shakes his head, rubbing at his neck afterwords "They have halls in the cities, but the bulk of their training and housing are the keeps they built outside the cities."

Malcius is the next to speak up, asking "Are there political reasons for the IronCoast Lords not taking part int he siege of Estrok, or is it simply an issue of numbers?"

Janos shrugs "They never got along with the GrayRun Lords, so it is likely that they were preparing to carry their grudge against the last batch of them on to the fresh batch. Add to that not being willing to gain the kings ire by aiding an attack against a nation he had not declared war on, and fear of the Degnarian armies roaming so very close to their lands..."

Yoy smirk "So it was simply them being cautious then. In that case, aside from keeping our assaults quick, and having plenty of troops trained to deal with heavy armor I can think of nothing to add to our strategy at this point. And you two?"

"Shit." Your lovely aide curses from behind you.

Excluding some of the stricter smaller orders, most will not take the field if all they will suffer is defeat, humiliation and their only recompense scorn and pity. they are not fools." Shaking your head, you make your way out of the briefing room after saying your farewells.

"Sansa, while we walk to the dungeons, I have a question for you."

"Yes, love?" she asks, curious more than anything else at the moment.
