"Hmm, Dearest husband, we could use more subjects, oh and maybe a market and a way to keep the bandit population down, and now that i think about it, a forge, oooh we could also survey the land see if theres any more material wealth, maybe strengthen our walls... build a few towers along the road, maybe some waystops, prepare for Lord Durian's arrival

    >> Lone Maester !/TFroSZvQA 10/05/11(Wed)22:59 No.16534726
"well milord" Maester Herla starts, "a good starting market would cost us close to 300 dragons, and a good forge would cost us about 200, and probably and another 100 for us to bring a blacksmith here." he clears his throat "now for strengthening the wall unless we find a good source of Granite, or a strong stone nearby it'll cost around 2000 dragons to bring the stone here and then maybe another 100 for labor, watch towers, using our wood we have now would be cheaper around 100 per tower. Surveying would only cost us 50 for a good skilled crew to come from White Harbor and if we want a really extravagent meeting for Durian i've calculated it at around 150."

Market is always a good choice
And we'll need to make everything nice for the arrival of the new guy
Perhaps a Single wooden tower, LATER, when we have some more money to spare, as we dont want to sit there with nothing but a bunch of stags to our name.
    >239 Dragons.
If people push it, we can put a tower at a midpoint between the Roost and the Hill., but we would keep at at least 100. and not fall below that.

And I will say again, Hug Our Daughter Edyth!

four days past and you start losing hope, sitting atop a hill with Calum surveying the area around you you strike up a conversation

"Calum, what do you want to do with you life?" you inquire

"Well, father...I love reading, and learning, but i don't see myself becoming a maester, i like to figure things out by myself, make mistakes and see what happens afterwards, i ca-" he stops midsentence and pulls out his bow.

taking his cue you pull out yours also and look to where he is looking, and at the bottom of the hill coming up to you is the largest bull moose you have ever seen, his antlers are wider then if both you and Calum held hands and stretched as far as your arms allowed, and he looks pissed...really pissed

pulling an arrow out of your quiver you loose one straight down at it, striking it in the chest which seems only to enrage it. Calum follows suit and hits it in the eye, letting loose a reverberating bellow, he charges straight at Calum, who drops his bow and plants himself down behind his spear...waiting for the charge

The moose charges in and impales itself on Calum's Spear snapping it in half, instantly it barrels forward legs flailing onto Calum, you hear a sickening crunch and a yell of pain from underneath it.

Dropping the spear, you rush forward, and see that the lower half of Calum is underneath the massive moose, using your spear you leverage it enough that Calum can wriggle out, he lays there and matter of factly states "well we got-" and before he can finish he passes out,

looking down you can tell that everything below his knees are shattered.

As you pick him up he stirs a bit "Dad....don't...don't forget the moose, or this entire trip would have been useless..." and then passes out again

You and your group finally make it back to the Castle it is late at night , your horses are flecked with foam from being pushed to the limit.

You rush towards the doors to the hall the guards barrely push it open by the time you get there. "HERLA!' you scream "HERLA I NEED YOU!" you rush up to the maester's room

"HERLA! MY SON IS HURT" you yell as you bust in through his door, startling him awake.

"What happened?" he asks groggily stumbling out of bed before finally seeing Calum "by the godswood..." as he finally sees the mangled mess of Calum's legs "Quick put him down on the table, and fetch me a pot of boiling water and my utensils." he urges you.

You yell down the hallway for a pot of boiling water, and then turn back inside grabbing all of the utensils you can find.

when you finally get back to Herla with the items in your hands he looks at you forlornly "we're going to have to remove everything below the knee, theres not a solid bone in there, its just a mash of muscle and bone too stricken to be of any use. Im going to need you to hold him down as i work on him." he runs over to the cuppboard grabs several plants out of there as two servants rush in with the pot of boiling water.

"oh by the maker..." One of them startles looking at Calum's legs nearly dropping the boiling water everywhere.

Herla gets a long handled cup dips it into the water and adds the plants to it and mashes it all together into a cream. which he hands you.

"make sure he drinks this it could mean his life....or his death." he intones seriously

you slowly feed it to him and when its all gone you look at Herla for more instructions through watery eyes.

"grab his legs" he motions towards his legs with a large knife. "this will be very messy and he'll flail around even with the milk of the poppy."

you brace his legs as Herla with a face drained of color brings down the first knife with a sickeningly wet thunk. Calum screams in pain and tears roll down your cheeks freely at the sound.

At the sound your wife barges in "WHATS WRONG WITH MY CALLY BOY." then she finally sees whats going on and faints onto the floor.

several hours pass and Calums legs are bound in bandages, Herla looks over to you and your wife with bloodshot eye and says "You may rest now the worst of it is over now."

Your wife replies before you do "If death is coming for my son he must take me screaming with him."

When Calum is well enough, we should sit with the boy and have a good talk. We know he likes to read and work on problems, perhaps he could become a builder? I suggest we inquire what field he wishes to study and try to locate a teacher for him.

Our son is crippled, not useless and we will not allow him to think that he is such.

two days pass, and you hear a large horn bellow from outside waking you up from your resting spot next to Calum's bed, as you rush into the great hall, you see outside the doors a large bronzed man sitting on top of a horse next to two men carrying his banners; a tower standing in front of a crashing wave.

He dismounts and walks up to you and offers you his hand "m'lord i am Lord Durian, it is an honor to finally meet you. Ian has told me much about you and your family."

you take his hand and shake it "and reply It is nice to see you i am Lord Skylar Strongcock, and i welcome you to my home and brandish your arms to welcome him and his retainers in "There will be a great feast to commemorate your visit, but enough of that i suspect you want to meet my family."

You lead him inside and see that most of your family is waiting for him, and you introduce him to them all, all the while he can't keep his eyes off of Edyth, after the formalities are over with, he beckons everyone to sit.

"my gracious hosts, i thank you for your hospitality, and let it be known Durian Calik is not ungracious i have brought gifts for all of you." he motions to his retainers who have been sitting there quietly, the first one steps forward and hands him a long elongated box, "to the lord of the house i present to you a finely crafted hand and a half sword from my own blacksmith. he opens up the box and hands you a large blade, with the pommel being a cock's head with a small ruby grasped in the beak.
