159 KB Create a Species: Scifi Edition II Xenogenitor 09/23/11(Fri)11:07 No.16397318
Hello there, elegan/tg/entlemen. A few days ago, we used a tried-and-true voting formula to create a rather badass scifi species. I'm down for giving it another go.

    >I offer a series of possible choices or request input. Respond with one of the possible choices or your own input respectively, with "dice+1d100" in your email field. The person who rolls the highest number within five minutes gets selected and then I state the next phase.

I've never played this game at this time of day before, so let me know if you're interested. If no one is, I'll come back tonight.

    >>16397335

I was waiting to see if there was interest. There apparently is, so...

Let's start by determining how smart the creature is.

    >Mindless: a stimulus-response machine. Little to no central nervous system.
    >Animal: capable of limited learning and invention.
    >Sentient: knows that it exists. Possibly a tool user.
    >Sapient: smart enough to invent a true language and progress technologically.
    >Superintelligent: their minds our greater than our own.
    >Hyperintelligent: they think on a higher plane, above and beyond human comprehension.

Well, I guess we default to the only actual roll. The creature is in the octopus/elephant/chimpanzee range of intelligence. Not a civilization-builder, but no mindless beast.

Next question is where they came from:

    >Natural: spawned by evolution, or some other natural process.
    >Artificial: created by a technology-using life form.
    >Transnatural: they started out natural, but have been artificially modified.

Let's use both of these, since they're close. The species is artificial, created from the ground up, by a being with incomprehensible power. Their creator is so powerful, that they may or may not be visibly artificial.

For an artificial species, function dictates form. Why did this cosmic being create them?

Assuming that the Ork comment was meant to mean "war," these two highests can be reconciled. They ruthlessly and violently convert other beings to the worship of their creator. Or, at least, to punish the heretics or those who defy his clergy.

He sounds like a real nice guy...

These creatures are sentient, but not sapient, so they can't invent technology or culture of their own. How do they interact with others?

    >They have a basic AI that allows them to interact with the faithful; they can learn and use simple sentences, etc.
    >They have an adcanced user interface that mimics true intelligence (like the Vi's from Mass Effect).

They need some way of accepting surrender from unbelievers, some way of recognizing that people have converted to the True Path and that it is therefore no longer necessary to keep killing them.

They mimic true intelligence, but they can't formulate new thoughts or sentences. They simply use conversation trees to interact with people, meaning that in any given situation, they have a limited number of canned, pre-programed reactions which they can deploy. If they want to convert you, they simply run pre-recorded sermons created from mixing and matching paragraphs.

At least one group of worshippers has portal technology that allows them to quickly bring the creatures from one world to another (this technology could have been invented by mortal scientists, or "gifted" to them by their god).

They can only go for so long on meat, though; eventually, unless the feeding is truly excellent, they will need to return to have their batteries recharged.

Speaking of which, how do these creatures reproduce?

These go together rather nicely. For added evil, let's say that they need genetic material from the species they want to immitate, and they can only store one genome at a time. A drop of blood will do, but ignorant worshippers might throw them an entire living sacrifice just to be sure.

Since they have limited batteries, we can also infer that the temples include power plants to juice up the growing nanogel before it can split off and form new units.

So, size and shape seem to be variable, but everything they turn into is made from a shiny, black, bio-synthetic material. Presumably, they can easily regenerate wounds.

What weaknesses do these things have, besides starvation?

Their master has somehow manage to solve the nanite overheating problem; fire doesn't do much to them. However, this has led them vulnerable to heat loss. Since small pieces of the nanogel lose their functionality, you can freeze and shatter them.

If you happen to not be Samus Aran, you can also trick their dialogue-tree into thinking you're a believer. That won't help you if you meet on the battlefield, but in other situations it might.

The god needs no names for his own creations.

The worshippers call the nanogel the "godsperm," and often refer to individual units as "seeds" or "children."

The nonbelievers used to have a wide range of ominous names for these horrors, until a mysterious time traveler who once aided them coined the term "wibbly wobbly gooey wooey balls." Since then, the name has stuck, especially among underground resistance members seeking to make light of their predicament.

    SUMMARY TIME

A unique, extremely powerful being sought to be worshipped as a god. Since his own creations lacked true sentience, and thus were capable of only hollow immitations of worship, he set out to convert lesser races to his own worship.

The godsperm is a gel made of highly advanced nanomachines, produced by the alien god in his inner sanctum. This gel can form into individual creatures called the Variable Host (or "Todesboten" in the dominant language of the believers). In its normal state, the gel is a shapeless blob, capable of only limited movement. However, the instant it gets its hands on some DNA, that changes.

    I should have known.

When blood or flesh falls into the godsperm, the nanites form a structure based on the genetic code. Black, glistening, and bio-mechanical in appearance, the forms assumed by the godsperm are comparable in size, shape, and general anatomy to the DNA donor. The imitation isn't perfect; some features are universal to all Variable Host forms, and they often appear as disturbing as relatable. Human-based forms have a really creepy grin.

The nanogel has a rudimentary intelligence, with a programmed dialogue tree. Its a very advanced tree, but its still all preprogrammed; a prolonged Turing Test can reveal this. The purpose of these forms is to spread the faith of the alien god to new populations, accompanying missionaries of the faithful as "angels," living proof of the god's providence.

The creatures have two practical functions. One: they serve as repositories for divine knowledge and ritual, giving long sermons and storing "divine" technical data that can be given to the cultists as needed. Two, they are terrifying weapons against those who refuse to be converted.

The creatures are stronger, faster, and tougher than their gene donors, and are capable of interfacing with machinery and digesting living creatures. Their biosnythetic composition is extremely light, hard, and durable, so their claws can penetrate steel. Unlike most nanotechnology, they have a distributed cooling system that protects them from overheating; you'd need to throw them into the sun or keep a sustained plasma beam on them before they'd start to lose mass.

They do have weaknesses, though. Cutting them into small pieces will render that mass inert, and low temperatures can freeze them solid. A cryonic weapon, followed by a concussive attack, can freeze and shatter them into harmless shards. Some forms of technopathy can also theoretically effect them, though their firewalls are godly. Their greatest weakness is their lack of true intelligence; they can be outwitted, either tactically, or in conversation.

The godsperm is kept in chambers in the temples of the faithful, where special machines recharge their batteries (the vodesboten can eat organic material for mass and a little energy, but they still can't go for too long without recharging at the pool, or going into sleep mode). It takes a lot of energy to assume a different form, so they can only switch DNA templates back at the temple.

The temples also have a portal system, allowing the godsperm to literally flow from world to world.

Awesome run, /tg/. This is probably my best one yet. I might have some drawfaggotry later today.

    Awesome.
You have a good one, and take pride in the lack of sleep I have. I originally was about to go to sleep when this thread appeared.

    Rock on, Xenogenitor.
