Due to their fledgling years of barely running apace of their superiors, the many injuries, stumbles and pitfalls each scout endures in their time through the gauntlet causes each one to develop a highly unique walking/running style of locomotion to suit their needs, which translates quite poorly onto even ground."

I noticed there weren't any rules for carnifex-catchers on their vehicles. How about:

This vehicle has a 3++ save against Death or Glory attacks and damage from ramming.
In addition, whenever this vehicle tank shocks the shocked unit must pass an initiative test or suffer 2d3 S8 AP1 hits.Vehicles and units that choose to make a Death or Glory attack fail this test automatically.
    >> Librarian Watt Mard !1IU2nB2lT2 09/20/11(Tue)00:24 No.16359431
One thing I'm noticing is... we have 5 complex special rules for these units. In addition to Relentless, Furious Charge, Fearless.

Most our special rules are complex with atleast 3 aspects.

I'm looking at ways to simplify them without losing the aspect of this Chapter we love.

Rough, I tried to consolidate things into 4 core rules, but I still feel like things could be much simpler. Some of the rules feel like they could fit into a single rule...

    How about

Keep Moving Forward: At the beginning of the Obstinate Marines' first turn, each unit with this special rule must pick either an enemy unit or an objective, this becomes their mission. If the mission is an objective, the unit must move towards the objective; their mission is completed when the objective is taken. If the target is an enemy unit, the Obstinate marines must move towards the enemy unit; their mission is completed when the enemy unit is completely removed from the board. The unit must move towards their objective during your movement phase (running in the shooting phase is not required, but it is recommended). Once a unit has completed its mission you may give it orders as normal. If you do not complete at least half of your army's missions by the end of the game you must run a 5k as penance before playing another game with this army.

I know that the idea is that they use pre-heresy weapons, but I think they need something a little unique.

Quake Hammer. Roughly the size of a thunder hammer, except that the flat ends of the hammer are wedged. Inside the quake hammer is an extremely powerful rotor. Though the rotor isn't very useful for combat, it's extremely useful for demolition. After the marine swings the hammer into the obstacle and the wedge cracks into it's surface, the rotor activates and starts widening the crack with it's vibrations, shattering more surface area.

Some writefaggotry, to set the mood I suppose.

    Ever Forward

Brother Persistus regarded the heretic before him; his objective. A twisted lump of flesh and armour, seemingly held together by foul ichors alone, it was hard to believe that this creature was once a Brother. Every Obstinate Marine heard tales of the threats of idleness, of the dangers that waited for those that wavered in their devotion. Still, it was hard to believe that such a thing could happen to Indomitus. Stalwart Indomitus, who strode by Persistus’ side during the grueling recruitment marches. Indomitus, who had walked through death and damnation, only to come out victorious on the other side. That Indomitus was gone now.

In its place was an ugly, diseased smile. “Pooor Persistus, unable to complete his objective.” The former marines laugh was a wet raspy gurgle, indicative of something congealing and writhing in his throat. Persistus knew the situation was grim, but he could not help but smile back. Even the blood leaking from the infected stumps where his legs had been could not curb his determination. The gaggle of nurglings and other unnamable growths quested over Persistus’ prone body, looking for a chink in his plated armour. There was not much time left. “You have forgotten what it is to be a Juggernaut of the Emperor Indomitus,” Persistus coughed. “We always complete our objective! EVER FORWARD!”
    >> Brother Contumacious 09/20/11(Tue)01:32 No.16360106
Triggering his neural synapse Persistus activated the jump-pack integrated into his armour. Enough force was produced from the thrusters to send the Juggernaut hurtling toward his objective. Plumes of fungal growth were kicked into the air, and Indomitus’ gaggle of nurglings and other, unnamable beasts, fled in terror. Persistus collided with the cursed marine with the force of a freight train. Normally, an Obstinate Marine’s enhanced armour would be able to resist the ministrations of a combat blade, but Indomitus’ armour was covered in the gaping wounds characteristic of his patron. It was into one of these ragged holes that Persistus dug his blade.

Indomitus took hours to die, gurgling and spitting up offal as he did so. Persistus never once weakened his grip. When the deed was done he fell to the ground. Precious little blood remained in his body. Persistus had no doubts; knew he had accomplished his duty. The traitor, one of the damned brothers of The Still, had been slain. The chapters honour was preserved. Soon another Juggernaut would set out, with the objective to recover Persistus’ gene-seed and his body. Soon he would march again, ever forward.

Basically just a massive blast of force after the impact, seems like a pretty effective way to plow through obstacles/heretics/xenos unfortunate enough to get in their way. Maybe it could be a Chapter Relic, or maybe some of their Dreadnoughts have it.

So basically, its a powerfist with a secondary power discharge. Kind of like a thunder hammer right? The power is stored and discharged by a large "hydraulic" ram.

When it activates it works like a secondary impact, pummeling the target again.

Lexicanum says it just disrupts matter that it touches.
So maybe the piston on the back of it just forces the disruptive energy forward, past the fist.

Also, reposting my shitty mockup of a possible emblem, which would also be their boot pattern. The arrows representing their ever moving forward, also leaving behind a path for their comrades to follow.
    >> Starshadow 09/20/11(Tue)18:51 No.16367169
    >>16366927
I've heard the double strength thing explained in a number of ways. The one that makes the most sense to me is that the suit momentarily locks its joints at the moment of impact. This increases the force of the blow because it has the weight of the entire marine and his armour behind it.

Power weapons come in many different kinds. Some of them are lightsaber ish. But the most common kind is a glowy solid weapon. They cut through armour easily because the energy field disrupts the bonds between matter. Powerfists shape the field around a fist. So they weaken matter and then crush it. A thunder hammer works the same way but it also builds up extra energy and releases it when you hit something.

So going by what the video shows. What you are looking to make here is a sort of "thunder first". The big piston is a battery. When you trigger it it projects a "shaped charge" of disruptive energy in addition to the impact of the powerfist.

    Problem:

Ignoring EVERY unit UNLESS it becomes a threat means...if a unit causes X% wounds to a squad then and only then would the squad attack them.

    My proposed solution:
    Quick rough rule-type.
Partinax Marines always move towards their objective.

They may only assault enemy models between them and their objective or within 12'' of the objective.

They may shoot any enemy models within weapon range, but may not change direction.
EG: On the way to objective they ignore enemy units that don't get to close to them. If the enemy unit is within shooting range or directly between them and the objective, then they are shot down and their corpses trampled.

Trying to keep it from being a horrible mess of wild rules, and be playable, while still representing the fluff.

To simplify, roll a D6 at the start of the game.

on a 1, your opponent picks a piece of terrain/objective marker as the OBmarine's primary objective.

on a 2-3 you pick an opponent's unit currently deployed as the objective. If your opponent has no units on the table, treat this result as a 4-5.

on a 4-5, pick any piece of terrain/objective marker within 18" of an opponent's deployment zone as the OBmarine's objective.

on a 6, pick any position on the table and outside your current deployment zone as the objective.

The special rule is that all OBmarines must end their movement phase close to the objective than they started it, unless in combat. If the objective is a unit as in option 2-3, and the unit is killed, replace the last removed model in the unit as the objective marker.

Holding the objective marker at the end of the game gives the OBmarines a +X point score.

Well, frankly I'm surprised I still have this copied after 4chan took a shit.

Less wedgey, less armor than obstinate space marines, but still really god damn armored, they use bikes to move about quickly because of all of the damn weight, and the fronts of the bikes are either drills or like the front end of these things so they can smash through obstacles by themselves without needing the mass weight or full space marine strength.

Also, what are the vehicles in the pic called? Tried scouring lexicanum for them to no avail.

Yeah, the scouts permanently range ahead of the main wedge, to gather intelligence.

The information they bring back is used by the Chapter Leaders to decide upon objectives.

They also infiltrate, sabotage, and secure supplies to clear the way for the March.

There was some fluff on their scout Captain, Determinus the Wanderer. During his initiation march he led the front of the wedge for hundreds of days, as a mere mortal man.

He suffers from a mutation that affects some Obstinate Marines; they are permanently restless, and find it difficult to remain still. He has ranged so fart ahead of the main group that no one has seen him in hundreds of years, but his handiwork can always be seen when the Juggernauts eventually reach where he has been, and his information always makes it back to the Chapter command.

Okay yeah I finished this a while ago but I had to go somewhere and didn't have time to dump it. And now, without further ado...

+++ Extracted from the memoirs of Inquisitor Rogericus Smithius +++

While the Astartes Partinax’s restlessness makes them phenomenal soldiers, it also made it incredibly difficult to talk to any of them. Even if I managed to find one who didn’t speak in monosyllables, they would stop listening after just a few sentences and then march off to find something to do. It was incredibly frustrating, three weeks in that grey fortress with no sign of the reported Heretics known as “The Still”, and I could rarely get an answer out of one of the marines before they wandered off. It was enough to drive anyone mad.

And so I found myself in the company of the Adeptus Mechanicus. A bunch of lunatics, but at least they could hold up a decent conversation. I spent most of my spare time with a higher ranking member of the cult, Dastun. He oversaw the maintenance of the Partinax’s Dreadnoughts and vehicles, known among the members and workers of the chapter as ‘Juggernauts’. They differed greatly from the standard Dreadnought design due to the Partinax’s peculiar habit of constantly upgrading their armor, they looked more like oversized versions of their living brethren, the only major differences being heavier weapons, and their usual power feet being replaced by treads. Many of them were walking slowly in place on treadmills, even as the tech-priests atattched more and more armor.
    >> Big Obduratius Writefag 09/23/11(Fri)23:07 No.16404220
    >>16404210
There was one in particular that caught my eye. It towered clear over everything else in the room, instead of an upscaled version of the standard Partinax helmet, it had what appeared to be a human face, set with a blank expression. But what really caught my eye were its arms, I had never seen anything like it, the forearms were massive, and there were two cylinders about half as long as its forearms jutting straight out from its elbows. “Excuse me,” I said as I tapped Dastun on the shoulder, “who is in that massive Dreadnought over there?”

He looked up from his data-slate “We just call him Big Obduratius, that’s what everyone here has always called him. Not even the other Dreadnoughts remember a time when he wasn’t here, even the oldest ones just say that he’s always been here and always be called Big Obduratius. It doesn’t help that he’s not very talkative.”
    >> Big Obduratius Writefag 09/23/11(Fri)23:08 No.16404224
    >>16404220
He shrugged, “He only says the same handful of phrases. He wakes up, smashes some enemies of the Omnimessiah, then goes back to sleep.”

“What about his arms? I’ve never seen power fists like those before.”

Dastun shrugged again, “It’s because they aren’t power fists. They work more like a thunder hammer really, but it seems that he can discharge them at will to send out a blast of the same type of energy, it loses power pretty quickly over distance though. We just call them Thunder Fists.”

We had been walking toward it while we talked and now stood right at its feet. If anything, it was even more imposing from this viewpoint. Hundreds of tons of gleaming ceramite and adamantium towered over the both of us. “So you really don’t know who this Obiduatius was, huh?”

He turned back to his data slate while he talked, “Not a clue, someone runs the name by the Administratum every once in a while, they don’t have any record of him as anything other than a Dreadnought, and even that only goes back to when they noticed that the Astartes Partinax were still around. Most of the Dreadnoughts here are older than that. He could be from before the Horus Heresy for all we know.”

Just then, an ear-splittingly loud voice boomed and echoed around the room, “SHOWTIME!”
    >> Big Obduratius Writefag 09/23/11(Fri)23:09 No.16404236
    >>16404224
    Big Obduratius just woke up.

A nearby tech-priest pulled a lever, and the back of the Leviathan (one of many that made up the amalgam of titans, troop transports, and other things that made up the mobile fortress) opened up to allow the towering Dreadnought to walk out. For whatever reason, this one in particular didn’t have treads, just large feet. I learned later that they had a tendency to slide backwards when its Thunder Fists were activated, not so good when there was an army behind it, or if you’re trying to hold back a particularly large orc.

I wanted to see this thing in action, and an excuse to get away from the drab corridors of the “The Pertinacious”, so I used my Inquisitorial authority to commandeer a nearby Land Speeder, ignoring Dastun’s warnings about following it to the front lines. Despite the fact that it was merely walking, the sheer length of its strides made it difficult to keep up with. Luckily, the march of the Partinax and the speeders anti-grav engines meant I didn’t need to worry about crashing into anything besides the occasional pile of Ork corpses, which would soon be cleaned up as the fortress advanced.

It wasn’t long before we saw the ranks of the Partinax, carving their way through the encroaching horde of Orks like a lasbolt through butter. Carefully placed shots, fists, and boots took out the biggest threats in the crowd first. It was obvious that they were headed towards the Ork’s Warboss, who was spraying a ceaseless hail of heavy bolter fire down from the hilltop, luckily with the usual Orkish lack of accuracy. The greenskin in question was large, even for a Warboss. It was roughly the same height as Big Obduratius himself.
    >> Big Obduratius Writefag 09/23/11(Fri)23:12 No.16404243
    >>16404236
The Dreadnought turned its blank gaze to its living Battle Brothers. The few who weren’t currently occupied with the Orks simply pointed to the Warboss. Obduratius faced forward, and to my surprise began to run. It cleared the distance at a blazing speed, simply stepping on any Orks unfortunate enough to be in his path. As he approached the Warboss, he pulled his right arm back, the cylinder in its elbow extended outwards. The Warboss turned his fire on the Dreadnought, but the curtain of Bolter shells didn’t even slow his approach. Even above the din of the battle, you could hear his booming voice.

Obiduatius’ punch landed cleanly in the middle of the Warboss’ stomach, lifting it off the ground on top of the Dreadnought’s fist.

    “YE GUILTY.”

The cylinder rammed back into Obduratius’ forearm, and the Warboss’ entire torso was vaporized in an instant. A look of shock passed over its face for an instant before its two halves hit the ground out of view.

    >The Blood Ravens Chapter holds an especially close relationship with the Obstinate Marines, often holding objectives after the wedge has passed. As thanks, the Partinax have given them many gifts from fallen brothers and enemies.

    Dispatch: Magus Greel
    Receiver: Techmagus Olmes

    --Blessing of the Omnissiah--

My Lord Magus, I understand you did not expect my report for several weeks, but this news could not wait a fortnight to reach you. I have concluded my duties as liaison to Chapter 1298 on behalf of the Holy Adeptus Mechanicus (Praise be the Omnissiah). My mission was to assess the technology of these Astartes, known colloquially as the “Juggernauts of the Emperor”, and ensure they were following the sacred and mandated rituals of the Machine God. I had believed human emotion to be behind me, and am embarrassed to admit the shock I experienced when shown the tech-armories and machine-chapels of this Chapter.

Upon arrival I was greeted by the most honored Techmarine, Brother Durabulus. He and his entourage immediately expressed concern about the armour plating of my transport; apparently to their standard it was as if I had taken the dangerous trip through frontier space in a civilian ground-car. Ensuring me his Brother Marines would improve the durability of my flier, I was led to the machine-vaults.
    >> Brother Contumacious 09/24/11(Sat)00:27 No.16405004
My Lord Magus, never before have I seen such affronts to the Omnissiah (Praise Be). Each Marine I witnessed sported numerous unsanctioned additions to their armour, and wore them in plain sight, as if flaunting their heresy! Tactical marines stomped around, as fully armored as holy Terminator Armour. The Terminators themselves were more akin to Dreadnaughts. Such patterns and marks of armour I have never seen before. I was led past the vault where the Venerable Dreadnaughts were kept, and was convinced that each could be a formidable opponent for a Warhound Titan.

Surely you must understand my emotions at this outrage, My Lord Magus. Alas, more affronts were still to come. Perhaps most disturbing to myself, being an expert on the technologies of the Imperium’s armored fighting vehicles, was the Juggernaut’s so called “Land Raider”. Perhaps it may have been once, but such a thing could no longer be the product of the Machine God’s teaching (Hallowed Be His Circuits). The forward loading ramp was eschewed in favor of a triangular battering ram. I was told this was a “power-wedge”, and was quite effective at negating enemy fortifications. Armoured skirting and raised plates surrounded the track section, making it almost impossible to hinder the movement of the vehicle. Built up around other areas were armored hard points, reflective plating, and other odd manners of heretical deviation. I was told this particular vehicle was damaged in an attack on a chaos stronghold, but had been recovered and converted. It was called the “Indomitable”, and was popularly considered the first “Land Ravager”. When asked what allowed Techmarine Durabulis the hubris to go against the teachings of the Omnissiah (Holy Is His Processor) he replied simply, “This is what must be done to accomplish our objectives. We move Ever Forward.”
    >> Brother Contumacious 09/24/11(Sat)00:27 No.16405007
My Lord Magus, I left the vaults of the hereteks with a distinctly upset feeling in my nano-chemical bio-converter. When I returned to my transport, I found it adorned with layer upon layer of armour plating; it must weigh a good 50 tonnes more than it did when I touched down. The extra weight means we must stop regularly to refuel. I do hope this message reaches you in time. Surely the Omnissiah (Holy Are His Works) has turned his gaze away from these Marines. Their Tech adepts blatantly practice heresy of all imaginable kinds. The Mechanicus (Knowledge Is Power) must exercise the will of The Omnissiah (Exalted Are His Forms), and exact punishment for these heresies!

    Sincerely,

    101001001

I'm actually rather interested in the Brothers of the Still now. Been doin' me some thinkin'...I came up with the idea of the Still's greatest warriors, sorcerers, and daemon princes being gifted with Palanquins rumored to be bound to a single point in space, but that allow the occupant to move the universe around them to a certain degree instead. Either that, or when they move, they step in and out of time and space so that they have always been at a certain place. In essence, they "there" around the battlefield rather than actually moving.

The way you're talking about it gives the impression that there a lot of the Still.

I'm not sure that's the direction we should go with them. I'm in favor of the Still being essentially incredibly rare, but also incredibly dangerous and powerful.
    >> Anonymous 09/24/11(Sat)05:03 No.16406629
    >>16406073
They are dangerous, yes, and powerful. So odds are that some of them would survive the initial turning (i.e. when all the Marines turn on them), and even if there aren't so many of them, in ten thousand years they do stack up.

There could probably be a few dozen at least, maybe even a hundred or two.

Should they spread a particular disease, the "Slothful Pox" or the "Plague of Inertia" or something? Or should names like those just be the fanciful appellations given to the general moral corruption?

Kind of Dark Angels Fallen-esque, then? Few(ish) in number, but when they show up they're always at the center of a cult or at the head of a warband or otherwise in positions of power and influence. Probably riding one of the special Palanquins of Nurgle...how about calling those the Torpor Thrones or Thrones of Inertia or something?

A few dozen is about what I was thinking.

Also, the Still should probably be about the only thing that can divert an Obstinate Marine from a previous objective. (but only if the object isn't particularly important)

To me, The Still are not like other chaos marines. They don't join war bands and burn and pillage. They are for the most part completely stationary; they grow and fester in one spot and corrupt the very land around them.
They also infest the minds of people, so cults do often spring up around them. Instead of damaging the Imperium through warfare and killing, they damage it with sloth. Manufactorum output is crippled, quotas go unmet. Machinery ceases to run, tithes are not paid, foundings are not mustered. If allowed to exist for many years, the Still would infect a world. The entire planet languishes in inactivity.
Obstinate Marines are constantly on the lookout for Brothers succumbing to Nurglish corruption. Often they get a bolt round through the head before they have a chance to fully transform. Depending on the level of corruption, this isn't always enough to kill the marine. After several supposedly dead Brothers survived and festered, dispatched bodies are now burned.

Even the Obstinate Marines can not watch all brothers at all times, and some Still do fall through the cracks. Brothers that are sent on solo , long-range missions are at particular risk of falling if they see their objective as too great to accomplish. The Still do not exist in great numbers, but are great threats by themselves.

If the Chapter receives word of the Still, it will immediately divert some resources to attempt to kill it and drive out its influence, while still trying to complete their current objective. If an Obstinate Marine is on a solo mission, and finds evidence of the still, he must immediately find and dispatch it.

Not many outside the Chapter know of The Still, and the Obstinate Marines hope to keep this disturbing epidemic a secret. The Still are the Juggernaut's greatest shame, and none may be allowed to live.

I'm liking this idea. A Nurgle blessed death guard like chaos marine, just sitting in a throne, growths leaving his body and going into the ground and the like. Followers doing his bidding. Obviously he is a psyker of some sort.

I don't think he should NOT move... like the Partinax, "Always moving LOL TREADMILL DEFENSE" was a funny exaggeration... but they do cease physically moving when riding vehicles and the like, or when needing to hold a position (only until they are no longer needed to hold their objective. Then they move on to their next...etc)

Likewise for The Still - They don't move unless they really need to. So for our chair-sitting marine, he would only ever stand up and move (breaking the growths off him in grotesque puss spewing, wet pops.

Then he would fight, only long enough to A: Win, or B: teleport out to a new place to grow/fester....

    A good cult leading Marine.

A simple way of doing this with few balance issues - Field Scouts using tactical squad rules, Tacticals using Terminator rules, Terminators count as Dreadnaughts, and Dreadnaughts... Warhounds, or something?

That's what I was thinking fluffwise, but that'd work for the game rules fine.

Yeah, and their force organisation would probably often end up very Elite-Heavy. Terminator armies can work if fielded well though, and they certainly can have a lot of character if well made.
