247 KB RoS fechtclub: Manfred's Coming of Age Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)02:37 No.16201448
    Greetings, gentlemen!

Inspired by the likes of John Galt and Kzyrgis, I now endeavor to facilitate a Riddle of Steel scenario with your assistance. Meet our protagonist:

    Manfred Havrisham
    ST 4 WP 4 Ref 3
    AG 3 Wit 3 Aim 3
    TO 4 MA 3 KD 3
    EN 3 Soc 3 KO 5
    HT 3 Per 3 Move 5
    Proficiencies: Sword & Shield (6)
CP: 9 (sword & shield) 7 (cut & thrust) or 5 (pugilism or wrestling)
    Equipment: Arming Sword

Manfred has been the faithful squire of Sir Perceval of Havrisham, his uncle on his father's side. Having seen his squire through to the ripe age of 14, Perceval has decided it is time for young Manfred to become a man. He sends the boy off to town with five pence in his purse, an arming sword at his side, and some brief verbal instructions on how to secure the services of a prostitute.

Cut to an hour later. Sweaty, exhausted, and not a little embarrassed, Manfred the Man rises to put on his trousers only to find that his purse has a hole in the bottom. He has no money to settle up his debt with the harlot!

He looks sheepishly over his shoulder and sees the woman watching attentively. "Surely you have the money we agreed on, boy. I didn't put up with that little thing of yours for nothing."

    A couple quick ground rules:

1> you guys are running Manfred. Everybody else's stats are unknown to you by default. First person posting as Manfred in direct response to a call to action by me gets dibs on dictating his actions
2> You guys roll for everything but hit locations (I'll do that)
3> if I don't call for a die roll, I probably won't honor your roll
4> first person to roll the dice called for gets it. Please be clear who you're rolling for.
5> please don't hide your dice

Any relevant skills/gifts? Apparently we have the small "rapier" flaw...
    >> Burrowowl 09/06/11(Tue)02:58 No.16201637
    >>16201613

Manfred has the standard Knight and Swordsman skill packages at 9, no notable gifts or flaws

He's a teenager, so he has no spiritual attributes to speak of. He just texts with his friends all day and reads 4chan.

    A quick word on Wrestling:

Manfred has a Grappling proficiency that defaults to 5. Offensive grappling has an activation cost of 2cp, which would leave you with 3 total and leave you with nothing on the next exchange.

Might be time to rethink this. Buckle on our sword as part of our getting dressed and beckon her to come to us to receive her payment. "M am a very busy person, come collect your payment, I am in a hurry."

He means it defaults from 6 to 2. The CP is 5 after reflex. But we don't want to go grappling against a likely armed opponent, even if it's only a whore.

Zero successes to Manfred's one! Maybe she didn't see you poking your finger through that hole in your purse.

"Uppe Greyide has been pestering me for days regarding a debt I owe him. He always gets his money, tis true..." she chatters away idly for a moment, then her brow narrows and her voice goes shrill. "Wait, that's just your sword belt! Where's my money, you little rat!?"

She springs to her feet, still naked, a dagger in her hand. Your arming sword is at your hip in its scabbard. Your keen fighting instincts tell you this crazy bitch is about to stab you.

You just beckoned her over where you picked up your sword belt to get her payment. Changing your story right now isn't getting a lot of traction.

Charlene is in an aggressive stance, throws red, gains initiative against your white, and puts six dice into a thrust (ATN 5) at your chest (zone XII), shrieking in outrage at your intransigence. Getting your sword out will cost you 2cp, leaving you with 7 to work with (+2 to a defensive maneuver thanks to your stance).

Terrain roll sounds reasonable. Charlene's between you and the door, and the room isn't very big. 2 dice at 7 should get you over the bed , successful full evasion should get you out of the room.

Manfred: 2 at 7 to get to the door, then 9 at 4 to full evade

Charlene 6 at 5 to prick the little prick in the chest.

1 MoS, happily Charlene's using a ST-2 weapon and doesn't quite get enough on it to penetrate Manfred's imposing TO of 4.

New exchange, Charlene maintains initiative. You're pretty sure Sir Perceval can hear her a half-mile away at the manor keep.

Manfred's out of dice at the moment. Charlene spends the rest of her CP (2) on another stab, ATN 5, same location.

It's unclear that Charlene even remembers she's holding the blade as she beats away ineffectively at the squire's chest with both of her hands. Tears stream down her face as she spews a torrent of the most profane insults young Manfred has ever heard.

Not really. There's just a fair amount of stuff which can influence combat (but which generally doesn't).
There's also the problem that the game desperately needs a second edition which unifies all of the rules adjustments which have happened in the Flower of Battle, the Companion and so on.

Your horse rears at the sight of the mists of the Gallan's valley open on your quarry.
The fetid wind of his breath reaches you as it roars his challenge to you and to humankind, and you know what you must do.
You must rid the world of this abomination.
    >cutscene stops
    >presenting the Brave Knight
our Brave Knight is one of those a-bit-larger-than-life hero (St 6, To 6, Reflex 5, WP 4, En 4), armored at least in fine chain mail, with a mail coif (av 4 all over, or you can choose an other kind of fine armor, sponsored by the local nobles).
he has trained with the master of arms of those same nobles, so we'll count him as coming from a Chivalric school of arms, with a focus on swordsmanship (11 points, he train from child, so it's 12 in swords and 10 in lances).
you get to choose the exact sword, and choose it wisely: you have a magical one (it's a fine sword of its kind, with a spiritual attribut of 6: wurmslayer!). he's also carrying a reinforced (needs to break twice to actually break) light or heavy lance, again you choose.
and since we're talking of spiritual attributes, his own destiny: become the hero of the land! (2 points) is flaring up.
    >present the Noble Destrier
it's a basic, but very brave, destrier, with normal armor of your choice.
the default would be chain flanchard and crinet, with a nice leather saddle.

    >presenting The Wurm
it's a big piece of abomination, turning the whole valley into a putrid swamp with its presence.
    also, it's roaring at you.

the flower of battle says otherwise.
I think it's strange as well, and I have no idea how A Wurm would charge you defensively (a man would charge from behind a shield... but a Wurm?), but he isn't, he's chomping your horse's head off!

from my understanding, you get 3 bonus CPs from being on a destrier, but you're going to need a Ride check every time you're hit to avoid falling.
There are more complex manouvers, again, in the flower of battle, should you want to charge the horse into The Wurm or something similar.
Jumping off is a full evasion, and follows the same rules - it's sort of hard to commit to a couched charge and do that at the same time!

in short, that makes your Combat Pool 20 (5 reflex, 10 school, 2 destiny, 3 the Brave Destrier). use it wisely!

is that 14 successes, on The Wurm's head? actually, we need to take 3 dice away for the reach (the beast had the same reach of the lance)... let's remove the last 3 ones, that's 13 successes. +6 strenght, -12 toughness, level 7 wound to the head.

    >final scene unfolds
with the united powers of his mighty dragon-slaying smallsword, his noble destiny pushing to unfold, and his affection toward his noble destrier, nothing can stop the Brave Knight's blow. Not mortal armor, not draconic scales.

The day is saved, the valley freed, the beast vanquished
But it wasn't an easy victory.
His Noble Destrier lies dead, under The Wurm's carcass, and only his honed reflexes (and probably the sword's own will) saved his own hide.

Goes a lot faster when it's just one person making the decision, it's the consultation that takes the longest.

Not saying that it's necessarily faster in real life. Seneschals should kick their players to go faster if they're slowing down and humming and hawwing.

The way soldiering works in the empire is that knights raise men and train them. so they have a sort of standing army. there is a saying when crops go bad or things look grim "theres always the army..." the army is always recruiting. so you can imagine the dirt farmers get a bit dumbfounded when they have a spear pushed in their arms and told to run at the enemy

magic can do EVERYTHING. it follows a system similar to WoD Mage.
exactly, it can roll too big pools, against too small resistances, if any, with customizable TNs. also, you have to split that excessive pool and get as many successes as the TN on the 'defensive' part to avoid aging.
actually it's even more fiddly, and there are actually 2 systems, one old and one revised, but those things are true in both of them.
    >tl;dr: I don't like the magic system.

I'll run this like an actual encounter, so all you know about your opponent is what I describe to you.
As for your guy, I'll give you some numbers and you can assign them at will. and pick a weapon and proficiency.

    6, 5, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 2

    ST, AG, TO, EN, HT
    WP, Wit, MA, Soc, Per
    Aim, KD, KO, Move
    Proficiency (x) 7
    CP:

Unless I'm missing something, the most important stats in a straight fight are Ref, ST and TO, right?

If we're setting TO to 6, we should probably have ST and Ref at 5's.

Right, so my boredom demands that this scenario is run.

You are a Norman Free Company Man At Arms, seperated from your brothers during a skirmish with a similar English employed Free Company. You are trecking down a hill back in the direction of your unit's billet when you spot a glint of metal in the corner of your eye.

Someone roll Perception, 3 at 8 please.

    success!
You spot the distinctive glint of sunlight off a helmet, as well as the profile of a figure holding something long outstretched in one arm, with the other pulled back with his hand near his shoulder.

ok, you can do anything right now, ignore the figure and walk on? call out to him? give a wave? prepare for a charge? it's up to you.
