344 KB Riddle of Steel: How Sarah Gizka destroyed Rome John Galt 08/25/11(Thu)10:02 No.16059808
Gizka might've had worse days, but not in recent memory. Turns out, killing Cardinals doesn't fly too well with the constabulary of Rome.
    Who would have guessed?
In retrospect, fleeing to the Americas would've probably been the better idea after stealing the mask of Zorrino, but hindsight is always 20/20, and the whole vigilante thing just seemed so cool!

Fleeing over the rooftops of Rome, Gizka realizes that she won't be able to escape at this pace. She has the advantage of mobility, but the guards have numbers and they know the layout of the city better. She's going to need to kill her way out, instead of running.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to Assassin's Creed: The Riddle of Steel version.

So, here's the plan: We've got a highly upgraded Gizka, and an infinite supply of mooks in ascending difficulty.

The trick here is, I won't be posting /their/ stats until after you've guided our intrepid hero into killing a few of them. This will be the closest thing we've done to an actual RoS game from a player's perspective. The goal is to use move rolls to limit how many of them you're fighting, and to dispatch them quickly before being overwhelmed.

    Think you're up to it?

Should we have dear Gizka enter this affair with less armor, allowing her to duck and weave to her heart's content, or with more armor, but lowering her dodging effectiveness?

I'll let the audience decide, since you're the ones who're going to have to endure the consequences of either.

Three guards, whom I like to call "Type I Mooks," are rapidly approaching, panting their wage-slave asses off.

Wasting bullets on these cretins would be... Well. A waste. And a shame. So, should Gizka Move to try and maneuver around them and fight fewer at once?
    OR
Should she take them all on at once?

However, that's still a margin of 1, meaning that Gizka inflicts her strength (4) plus her weapon's damage (2) plus her margin (1), for a total of Strength 7 to the groin-ish area.

Either Gizka must make another Move roll, or the remaining two guards will also be fighting her this turn. And that'd suck pretty hard.

I'd think it's not so much the loss of blood as the fact that it isn't moving anymore, certainly towards the brain.
IIRC, doesn't it only take twelve seconds for the brain to die once it's completely hypoxic?

takes a few minutes to "technically" die from blood loss

it takes about 6-12 seconds to pass out from lack of oxygen to the brain though, and that timer starts as soon as the heart isn't beating.

Alright! The situation as per last call was that Gizka had shot one of the Cardinal's elite guards, and then flung her diminutive ass off of a building into a cart of hay. This still inflicted 3 damage on her for the fall, which she soaked up pretty well, taking a level 1 to the left knee, level 1 to the right foot, and a level 1 to the left shoulder.

She's now in a large mass of straw, contemplating her next move.

And what is her next move? She's definitely out of the reach of those jerks, at least for now, but it's hard to miss a tiny chick falling out of the sky into a pile of straw right there, she's not invisible. Sooner or later some joker with a spear is going to come around...

    I'm baaaack!

Alright, we're a guard now. Alleyways are right out. A lone guard is going to be a target for all the scum in Rome and the rooftops are way too obvious.

We should probably hurry towards the gates and pretend we're there to make sure the assassin doesn't get out by the south gate. Then get out by the south gate.

Ahh, screw work, I can wait an hour.

Alright, so, we head straight through the market in our cobbled-together guard armor.

The other guards give the new girl a few looks...

How about a WP/Acting (8?) roll to wear an expression and demeanor of authority, so that nobody questions Gizka's presence? Looking like you belong is about as good as belonging.

The breastplate is pretty masculine, but Gizka is about 4'8".

However, I see one success in there. None of the guards are gutsy enough to stop the short officer in his stern walk towards the gatehouse, for fear that he'll have a napoleon complex and beat them to death with his codpiece.

It's a nice market. People selling banal foodstuffs and spices, weird contraptions from the orient, and there's an extremely persistent sun-dial salesman hawking his wares to passing townsfolk. (He stays far away from the surly guards, of course.)

Gizka makes it through the market. However, the ill-fitting straps of the armor are going to make it a nightmare to actually run if she has to flee once she gets to the gatehouse, which is now about 500 feet away.

Should she shed the armor, or keep it and try to bluff her way through the gates?

Ditch the armor. The bludgeoning wounds we got during the fall are all minor and ignorable. We can sprint out of this now that we're near the gates!
But let's not forget to reload our guns, we're going to need them if things get really tight.

Alright, ditch the armor somewhere inconspicuous, and try to find a way not to deal with the guards at the gates.

Gizka isn't much of a city girl, having spent most of her formative years chained to a wall in a plantation near Baghdad. But she knows a thing or two about how to escape from tight situations, and this definitely counts.

She spots a rookery that extends just far enough up past the walls that she might be able to leap from it to an unattended section of wall.

Alternatively, she could scale the aquaduct, and try swimming out of the city through there. It'd be a bit dangerous though-part of the duct is covered, and getting stuck there would mean certain drowning.

Aside from that, there are only... 20-something guards at the gate, and two crossbowmen above. Not the worst odds she's faced this week.

    Back.
Gizka knows how to swim, but not nearly as well as she knows how to climb and run. It's the path of least sword-resistance, but the hardest skill tests she'd have to make.

    >>16064968
...Potentially. A very large pigeon. A Subotica pigeon.

Alright, climb is... So easy let's not even bother rolling it. Then we get to the fun stuff!

At the top of the rookery is Gizka's last hurdle before she can escape. There is one duty-shirking guard entertaining a prostitute on this sheltered section of wall, where none of his cohorts bother checking.

He might not notice her leaping onto the wall and then into the muddy wetlands beside the tiber below, but if he does, he'll sound the alarm.

The rookery has many messenger pigeons, and a few pole-scrapers to take the shit off the roof.

I don't think they'd find the body here for a while. Or, bodies, maybe, if we have to kill the prostitute as well. I'd say kill him. If we really need to ditch our pursuers we can do it better outside the city.

adding another vote for sneaking past

we can always duck and weave and if we're more than say 20 feet away a crossbow isn't going to have an easy time hitting a small rapidly and erratically moving target.

I'm actually more worried about the gate guards getting horses than the crossbows.
Does RoS have mounted combat rules? Might be kinda awesome to see what happens
