Help on fluff building an AdEva setting set in 1961?

I definitely want to give it a strong 50s vibe. I'm not sure whether I want the whole "Earth flooded" deal for the Second Impact. Maybe the Second Impact could be something else that wouldn't shake the geopolitical sphere TOO much?

Has anyone toyed with the idea of not having the pilots limited to teenagers? Sure there'd be no age cap, but they'd still be extremely rare from the point you have Neospartans who fought in, say, the Anglo-Zulu wars or Prodigy beatniks. Thing is that I don't know how it'd work since having everyone be teens has kept alot of focus on non-combat for some reason.

For one, the UN will not be the dominating power. And seeing as how this is the 50s, the French, Portuguese and British still have the bulk of their colonial territories. The Cold War is going on even in the wake of the Angel invasion (thinking of them renaming Martians which could tie in for an 'official' briefing on what the Angels are). There would be a war going on at large instead of a monster-of-the-week thing, so there's a good chance they"ll have to fight off base.

How should I justify the advanced non-EVA related technology? Nazi super science? Reverse engineered technology?

Either way, I was thinking only the US would have Evangelions, and while they wouldn't be the only means of fighting off the Angels, they're seen as the way of turning the tide without nuking everything.

Thinking maybe CFs would advance as the research tree advances and having the option of CFs costing surplus or maybe a sort of requisition pool you can boost through XP.

What could other superpowers like Russia use as an alternative?
    >> Anonymous 08/24/11(Wed)18:41 No.16052500
The world was not ready for the Angels in 61 since they would habe been completely unable to clone the EVAs. Either you go the road of Nazi Superscience (which will change the tone of your game even more) or you simply explain it away with "lol it was all on the Alien's scrolls".

Very interesting idea, as for the whole age limit (or lack of) if your players are decent the whole out of combat play will still tie in rather well with older characters going the whole "when I was a boy we didnt have fancy giant robots... we had to beat the martians back with a shovel... AND BE THANKFUL WE HAD THE DAM SHOVEL" etc etc

Any excuse to use nazi super science is a good excuse, you could even tie in the moon as a nazi base reverse engineering angel tech or whatnot

    also general bump for interest

Clearly the United States knows how to make mechs, but the Russians know how to make all the connection technology.

They're at war, but they must work together... to save Earth! To save the proletariat and the money from being destroyed by evil aliens.

The Soviets do what they've always done with American tech that's been proven to work well. They try and make a cheap knockoff of it and produce it in mass quantities.

I imagine an army of shoddily constructed EVAs that literally look like they've been slapped together from random body parts and old WWII machinery trying to bum rush an American EVA team.

Other NATO members will also have their own EVAs through joint research, but they won't be nearly as advanced because the US obviously keeps all the best stuff to itself.

Have the US and Russia still fight the good old Cold War, but less intensely. Instead, they subtlety try to humiliate each other and do some saber rattling. Still, they may share some limited amount of technology with each other.

Have a few select cities that were targeted by the Angels, and then have the Angels select a few resource rich sites.

Maybe those captured cities are then used as terrestrial command centers, and have a few saucer-like ships (air or mariner) that act as mobile HQs for either creating new fronts or naval warfare.

Berlin would be a good spot for one of the targeted cities, seeing as how it's the center of the Cold War.

Alaska, Middle East and Siberia can be targeted for the oil resources. Even if the Martians don't use it, it'd fuck over alot of countries.

OP here. One thing I'm thinking of doing is having the Geofront actually be a giant airship. Sure it'd house various facilities and such.

Umbilical cords wouldn't be limited by altitude, but it will be fluffed as the umbilical having limited range when it starts to really move around. So for all intents and purposes, it's the same range.

Supply caches? An air-dropped (nuclear?) generator with nuclear weapons.

Embarkation Points/Launch Ports? EVAs either dropping para-trooper style or drop-pods.

Turrets could either be mounted on the bottom, top or sides of the ship, which will effect things. Deployed on the side? It can shoot up and down, but range may be reduced. Mounted topside? Essentially the same range, but then you're limited to either having them being used for flying enemies, unless you have like a railgun, in which case it would have a min distance it could fire at all.

Not sure how to balance it.

My advice? Do what I did. Write your own. It keeps the players guessing and creates some good scenes where you reveal things to them.

In my setting God exists and created man. The biblical tales are to some extent real except God got bored and decided to kill man because he wasn't too keen on leaving alone the only life he'd ever created who developed intelligence. But the Devil was all "no dawg you got a responsibility here! You can't just kill them" and spent all his time trying to stop this.
Noah was real and it was the devil who got him to build that ark.

Jesus was the final battlefield in the war which God and his host of angels won banishing Lucifer deep beneath the Earth (under what would become the vatican) so he could watch as the humanity he loved so much was killed. Cept Lucifer did some AT field/power of creation dickery to make it impossible to kill humanity without killing him. At this point God just went "ahhh fuck it" and wandered off dragging the host of angels kicking and screaming with him.
Now they've started coming back looking for prestige and rank within the still divided and somewhat broken heavenly host.

The EVAs are clones of Lucifer made to fight the Angels and take the fight for humanity's survival to God. Kill the God, all the angels die.

Then theres SEELEs plan to steal the power of god and become gods themselves, the commanders plan to divide the power of god amongst all of humanity and in the middle of this is the poor old pilots. One of whom is the literal son of the devil thanks to being an Angel (in this case Lucifer) hybrid

NERV Awesome. Where the Vatican was turned into an EVA sized castle.

If evangelions aren't available when the invasion happens then the only thing that likely to actually be able to hurt angels would be strategic nuclear weapons deployed in huge numbers. It'd probably work for the first two or three angels but sooner or later it wouldn't be effective anymore. But the angels show up so irregularly that it might by you enough time to get evas into service, or at least some kind of thing that can neutralise an AT field.

Angels are actually pretty wimpy though in terms of their effect on humanity, they have one specific objective to accomplish at a specific location, they aren't out to actually eradicate humanity or anything.

See now what is much worse to have invade during the cold war is BETA, BETA are much worse.

I mean you don't have to worry about them actually doing anything other than trying to cause third impact. Their approach is almost always head directly to the geofront without passing go. You only have one objective to deny them so its easy to organise your defensive measures and nobody except the people in the area directly around the objective of the angels has to worry about civilian casualties.

They are really bizarre looking aliens with no apparent technology that invade earth in 1973 for reasons nobody manages to discern. Individual BETA organisms come in a variety of strains that vary in size from 8 feet tall to 66 metres tall and all of which are genetically unrelated to eachother and have no means of communicating with eachother and even if they did it wouldn't matter because they aren't intelligent anyway.

They have a number of bizarre behavioural traits that make you wonder what the fuck but mostly they just kill everyone.

Oh also due to there being two BETA strains that have laser organs with the larger of which has an effectiveof a hundred kilometres and a targetting rangeof 380 kilometres and have perfect aim they can pretty much deny the use of aircraft operating at any kind of reasonable altitude.

Hence how the standard plan for attacking a BETA hive involves dropping giant robots onto it from orbit while using the re-entry vehicle which is armored with an ablative coating as a shield/kinetic energy weapon.

    mmmm..

Drop-pod assault. definitely drop pod assault.

Shoehorn a short-lived and fairly hot N2 reactor into it as well, power the EVAs off of those for limited time instead of having wires dangling from the sky.

Make the reactor fairly easy to destabilize into a bomb (i know they don't really work that way, but work with me here!), end up with scenes of a pilot ripping and tearing the makeshift N2 mine out of her own power supply and cramming it into the Angel's mouth before trying to book it to safe distance before running out of backup power.

    Some more setting info.

I'm thinking NATO and the Warsaw Pact will have two different doctrines. Both give mixed results.

NATO: Dig in. Drop nukes/N2, artillery. Any remaining attacking forces are shot up by fortified units. This has caused NATO to lose territory at a much slower pace.

Warsaw Pact: "The best defense is an offense" sums them up pretty well. Every vehicle and aircraft is almost literally rolled/flown off to the front lines. Although they've managed to hold or even re-capture some territory, they've also lost alot of territory.

Basically, if you were to look at a map, the borders of the NATO fronts would have maybe a small reclines in them, whereas the Warsaw ones are full of zig-zags and diagonal lines.

Both sides also created not-so-innovative developments.

NATO developed the Geofront whereas the Soviets created the Land Cruiser (well, stole it from the Germans, but still).

The Geofront is mostly the same as it is in canon. They're built as heavily fortified subterranean military strongholds. They're mostly self-sufficient and can end up acting as an enclave of human civilization should the region be taken over by the Angels, although this has yet to occur. New York City is the most advanced one for having a "ceiling city".

When the Soviets realized their run of the mill tank wasn't enough to take on the larger Angels--they decided to build an even bigger tank. This has given them limited success.
    >> Anonymous 08/25/11(Thu)00:59 No.16056044
NATO and the Warsaw Pact are still fighting the Cold War despite the invasion. Neither side wants to see their rival lose to the Angels, though because that would only mean double the pressure would be put on them.

NERV is a desperate attempt at co-operating by NATO and the Soviet Union. The R&D department is unsurprisingly predominantly German--many of them having worked for Nazi Germany during World War II.

I'm thinking that should the OD choose to be from the USSR, his/her assistant will probably be American. The commander, however will also be american while the sub-commander russian or some other Warsaw Pact citizen.

Oh, and just to clarify, the US and Soviet Unions are the two superpowers and dominant players within their respective organizations, just like how it was IRL.

Pilots will be either from NATO countries or Warsaw Pact ones. I"ll probably keep it even. Both sides will be encouraged to try to humiliate, blackmail and manipulate the other pilots. Probably to coax the Third World in supporting them over the other.

There will also be mini-sessions where their host organization takes them off to do a separate mission.
    >> Anonymous 08/25/11(Thu)01:10 No.16056156
I'm thinking the Evangelions the PCs pilot would be NERV built. Why were the Evangelions created? Not only to show how both sides are TOTALLY FRIENDS, but as a massive propaganda tool that will hopefully turn the tide of the war, with their ability to neutralize AT-Fields being their selling point.

Mass produced evangelions would appear later on in the game.

With the exception of the NATO Evangelions having biological legs, both are really just the brain, core and spine of an EVA. Because of this, they take a much more practical/military looking shape, are generally cheaper but suffer in synch ratio. The cockpits will be cramped, the plugsuits hardly form fitting and their visuals being a black-and-white TV monitor and radar. I"ll probably give them a -10 or 20 SR and -10 to PER.

NATO ones would be more expensive to maintain and have a lower production output, but will generally be more modular and better armed. Oh, and more agile. Soviet ones in contrast are cheaper, sturdier and more generic. There'd be maybe three different models at most.

Hmm. To justify the tech, push the required backstory equally far backwards in time. Yes, that means SEELE started plotting back in the late 1800s.

You'd have to handwave a lot of the science into SCIENCE, but that's not impossible. Frankenstein was written in the early 1800s, so there's precedent for biological research. Computer panels get replaced with crapload of dials and gauges and vacuum tubes and gratuitous oscilloscopes. Eva-scale positron gun gets replaced with Eva-scale 1950s sci fi raygun plugged into a nuclear reactor.

If you follow the other posters suggesting second impact in 1946, you can also have every faction blaming it on lingering nazi holdouts.

This is sounding less and less like AdEva and more and more like X-COM: BIG ALIENS EDITION.

To create an alternative AE setting, you need to answer just a few questions before you can begin.

First; how were the EVA series created? You need the biological basis, and a means to produce it. This is best reflected in the science of the time. Given the 60s, I'd say something along the lines of Lysenkovication and artificial fertilisation; bombarding the captive Adam with intense gamma radiation until it buds off a Core, taking the Core before it begins to grow as an Angel, imprinting a human structure onto it by injecting it with a human fetus, and then leaving it in a strictly controlled artificial environment for the years it takes to grow to full size, accelerating the process by taking it, snap-freezing it in liquid nitrogen, and then defrosting it to cause a stress response. The Societ process is similar, but uses Lysenkovication more directly, snap-freezing it until it is clinically dead, causing fractures along the core while it is energistically dead and won't explode, then reactivating it by colossal radiation bombardment, so that a number of unpleasantly deformed and weak EVA base creatures are grown, each with its own Core shard. This also makes them much weaker AT-wise, but far less prone to Berserking.

The second question is hwo are you going to power them? There'd be worse batteries, and very large, to the point that being battery-powered entails carrying an apartment-building-sized box with you with a short cable leading to it. You also need to have a nuclear power facility and specially-designed cabling anywhere you intend to deploy, unless you seed the battlefield with shitloads of these batteries in advance.

The last question is how are you going to arm them? Since it's only the 60s, and the heyday of superweapons, most of the weapons can stay albeit that progressive and positron style weapons are much cruder and experimental. Antimatter weaponry is replaced by nuclear devices, down to Bolt weaponry being based on a CIA design for suitcase micronukes. You'll need to reflect the difference in Collateral from radiation being much worse than devastation, and also in the fluff.

And for your aesthetic, you need to watch movies like the Andromeda strain. That's what the super-advanced NERV tech would look like. Fewer neat lines, more useless curves and bubbles for the aesthetic, and computer displays being extremely crude, very simple, and needing colossal space to use. The bases would be powered more mechanically and hydraulically than electronics, and the NERV bases would need their own private nuclear power plants to run off. the US MAGI system is a computer farm. Literally a farm, a ten-square-kilometer bank of open-air computers with tape reels constantly running and a battery of tests being done at one. The Soviet MAGI system is instead a large room full of the cream of Soviet intellect gathered and circular tables grouped by speciality, overseen by a watchtower in the middle from which the questions asked are hung on large white sheets. The aesthetic is crucial to the feel of the outcome.

power contacts embedded in the battlefield surface, like those trolleys with the overhead cables

    and tesla coil power relays!

    and HARP dummy plugs

Dr. Baron von Evilsatan, you're part of the AdEva dev team, yes? Is there any chance of additional supplements being released? I've seen promises for a variety of different stuff (WW Eva, Evas in space, Evas with airships, etc) but are they anything more than pipedreams at this point?
    >> Anonymous 08/26/11(Fri)00:06 No.16067778

Well, to be fair, it's doubtful alot of the things in Evangelion could exist right now.

And really, I liked how much the devs fluffed out the Post-Impact world and I want something roughly as well thought out as what they wrote. And honestly, I like fleshing out stuff.

I don't quite want to spoil much on how EVAs are created beyond the fact Nazi Super Science is involved. Why? I have players who visit /tg/ and are aware of this thread. Oh, and pushing the year back to 1945.

Also, instead of an airship, it"ll probably be a giant hovering landship.

But yeah. Weapons I"ll likely have to re-work on. Particularly to give it a more retro feel. And yes, DEFINITELY just straight up nukes and neutron bombs instead of eco-friendly N2.

    Thanks for the tips, btw!

Yes, they are. However, we've been logjammed because of massive changes to the administration of how we're releasing products. First we were releasing the splats before the big book-of-extra-stuff, but then the problems of V2 becmae evident and we moved the Master edition, the intended final, up the line ot coming out first, so as to make the job of splatting easier and the results consistent. Not that long after the decision was made to change the entire process so that the next release would just be the final tidy-up of the old system, and that the system after that would be a standalone that doesn't use Dark Heresy at all. This naturally meant that all the extra stuff we'd done had to be held back for V3, so that it would be compatible with the system we intend to use thereon out. It will also mean substative delays to these splats until V3 is written, which is progressing well but will still take ages because, fuck, we're writing a standalone system.

The splats exist and are coherent. WWEVA was mostly written before it was frozen, with all of the setting, half of the fluff, and about half of the substantive mechanics and all the framework for the rest of it finished and waiting on the administrative delay. Obviously that'll be redone when V3 comes out. Hunt for Adam I know is complete and self-contained as an alpha, because I wrote it that way, but it was an early alpha that needed serious testing to refine into playability because for all I can write shit at a superhuman rate I don't write shit that's ready to go at all. SPEHSS EVA was substantively done in setting and had a solid framework for the rules with a set idea of everything that had to be in it. There were a number of projects that were doen by individuals only so I don't and won't know how they're going until they hit test phase. There was a Gundam one, I know that. We also had some vague spectulation as to a Super EVA Wars one, and the idea to do it first because it'd give us the tools to make all the other settings work easier, but it was never going to happen first.

All of these projects are frozen until V3 comes out, except those that are being worked on by individuals, but even they won't come out until at least some months post-V3 because of the whole rewriting-the-rules thing. Don't expect anything for quite some time.
As for V2.5 and V3 progress, BMJ wanted to keep quiet everything involved because we had a shitstorm with leaking fags a while ago, so I won't say anything substantive. They ARE being done, and WILL be released, but I can't put any timetable out there.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 08/26/11(Fri)00:26 No.16067977
If you really want the alphas on any of these because you want to run such a game modified to suit your campaign, then you can ask the individual in charge and they'll probably ship it over. It's just you'll have to keep it entirely to yourselves, and it's less likely for you to see the committee's universal efforts because of the anti-leak measures said above.

I'm disappointed I wasn't able to release Hunt for Adam by now, as well as the rest of it, but there WERE substantial problems with V2. The end product will be substantially better for the wait. And keep in mind everything's subject to change, because I'm only a contributor, not part of the administration.

I don't think ANYONE knows when what's coming out. V2.5 is a problem-solving exercise so it'll be out when it's done, and the rest is contingent on that.

Any chance of you releasing even an "Alpha" of the WWEva stuff?

Heck, some of us may want to stick to 2.5 for whatever reason.

Alright, thanks for the update. I'm not entirely sure why you guys are hesitant to release this stuff to the public (it seems like it would make playtesting it easier), but I'm not in a position to tell you how to do this.

Also, what are these "substantial problems" with V2? I'm in an AdEva group that's starting up soon(-ish); is there anything I should be aware of?

A lot of people complain that berserker is very weak in comparison to other classes until it zerks. This ain't true though you just need to be a bit more careful.

I don't get the reasoning either, but as long as it's being worked on, does it really matter?
