She stands, turning away and walking to the refrigerator set into the bar and grabbing a bottle of water. “Some. My modifications, my past work. Much of my history, any classified information from my past work. Abilities, knowledge, some of that too.” She finishes drinking, placing the bottle in the sink before leaning on the counter. You see her shoulders shaking as she continues, “To find out, without warning, that you can not do something you thought you could.” her voice drops to a whisper, only audible through ship receptors, “Or must do something you thought you would not, like protect files with secrets sixty thousand years dead.”
You stand, “You haven’t harmed anyone, Kateryna, nor done anything wrong. Don’t blame yourself for wild unknown possibilities that might never happen.”
“Possibilities.” she mutters, shaking her head. “Ones that turn more and more into realities each day. To watch as you take actions you did not know you would...”
You catch her shoulder, having closed the distance, and turn her around. She only manages a startled, “Wha--?” before your arms close around her, drawing her into an embrace. Her body goes rigid but you continue, reaching up to stroke her black hair with one hand. “It wasn’t programming that showed us the way here or ran out of the room without stopping me from unlocking the cases. That was you, controlling your own fate.”
She doesn’t respond and, for a moment, you wonder if you made a huge mistake... but slowly, ever so slowly, she relaxes again. You stand together for a time, the minutes lost in count even to you, with her warm body pressed against yours and hair tickling your cheek as she rests her head upon your shoulder. Not speaking or struggling, just returning your embrace. Standing silently in your arms, her shaking gradually subsiding. |
