Hey guys, ready to start working on the 1d4chan. Now would be a good time to discuss new fluff etc.
    >> Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)00:37 No.15953240
In the last thread someone came up with idea of the chapter in it's early days cleansing a planet in our system of a knornite incursion, it ended when Paul used the world feller to banish a greater daemon which resulted in the planet breaking about and Paul being entombed in a drednaught.

Would you like to use that?
    >> Anonymous 08/16/11(Tue)00:42 No.15953272
We should probably call that a legend, and may be prone to exaggeration. Because damn, that's a bit much.

But as a legend that probably didn't actually happen like that, it's great.

Is my Emperor Tree that the supports the Marine trees, Fortress-Monastery tree, and Sanguinius Red Forest gone? It wasn't mentioned once that I saw in the second thread. If I'm the only one that supports it then I'll let it go, but I thought the only thing against it was if it was instead of the Red Forest or Dreadnought Tree.

This was just an idea someone brought up in the last thread, I believe it was posted before we had settled on our nurgle focus.

As for the planet breaking apart that is just a legend the only ones in the chapter who know the true tale are Paul and his routine of redwoods or whatever we want to call them.

    Ok here's my idea:

Malus is the genus of tree on which apples grow, an apple tree is the biblical tree of knowledge as librarians are usually the keepers of chapter lore and knowledge if I'm not mistaken this could be their symbol

The Lord of Malus is our chief librarian.
They do not rule a planet but instead have control of a vast apple orchard on our home planet; in the center of this orchid is a ancient towering apple tree this could be the Emperor's tree.

    What do you guys think?

    >>15953361

Sweet, okay. Really fucking weird, I know, but I liked the imagery and Christian symbolism. The Emperor's tree, symbolic of God (to clarify, since someone made a deal about it in the first thread, the Lumbermarines do not worship the Emperor as a deity. They are like all other Chapters in this regard, we're just using Christian symbology as source material), in that it is all-encompassing and ever there. Sanguinius, as Jesus, would have the Red Forest as representative of his sacrifices for his children. The rest of the trees are planted by Marines themselves, with each tree representing a battle-brother. When that battle-brother dies, his tree is cut down for the funeral pyre. Ancient Chapter Masters who have become Dreadnoughts still living have the most massive trees around. The first Chapter Master and Founding Father, based off of Paul Bunyun, has the largest tree of all other Marine Trees. So large, in fact, that it houses the Fortress Monastery.

To expand on this, I was wondering if we could have it that when a Battle-Brother is made into a Chapter Master, his tree is supplanted and replanted into the Chapter Master Forest, with the first and greatest being in the exact center. In this way, while the bulk of the Fortress-Monastery resides within and without Bunyun's great tree, each new tree added in the vicinity includes an addition to the Fortress Monastery itself. While his tree is still the heart, the great forest itself is also part of the fortress-Monastery.

    What do you guys think?

    >>15953477

If you have no objection I think Malus is a perfect fit, the general idea is based around librarians being keepers of knowledge and the apple tree being a symbol of that knowledge plus it sound better than lord of the apple.

Of course I am fine with it. This isn't my project alone. Others contribute. Its simply a group project, that I am simply helping along. If you want to put forward awesome fluff, and it fits, all is good. If it doesn't fit with the pre-existing fluff, we can, as a group find a way for it. And if there is no possible way to fix it. Then we can be polite about it. No need to revert to insults or petty infighting.

Let's talk about the colors of the Chapter. Picture related was my attempts to come up with the Lumbermarine scheme. Far as I know it's still accepted. I feel we need reasons for the color beyond Lumberjackness

Red Upper Body: In honor of the Bloody Angel himself, Sanguinius, and the Red Forest we keep.
Black Trim: Representative of our loss and sorrow in the death of our revered Primarch.
Blue Lower Body: Blue is the personal heraldry of our Founding Father and his ancient companion. He is the foundation we were built upon.
Brown Boots: Representative of the earth we tread, bleed and die to protect.

To expand on Brown Boots and our love of the land and the trees, I was wondering if we could have a Iron Snakes tradition. In Abnett's novel, the Marines would store upon their person a vial of their homeworld's sea water, as a sort of lucky totem.
The Lumbermarines should have a similar tradition. Before leaving his homeworld, a battle-brother travels to his sacred tree for a personal oath of moment, sanctified by taking a sample of soil and tree (twig, leaf?).

You guys asked for some Canadiana last thread. Repostan what I got.

    - Marines live in Subsector Taiga
    - PDF wear red RCMP uniforms
    - Bears feed on giant deathworld sized shark-salmon. During spawning season they leap up waterfalls and eat anything that gets too close. Most adults are bigger than Orca whales.
    - As on Earth, lumberjacking is statistically the second most dangerous industry to work in. The #1 spot, of course, goes to crab fishing. Salmon only have orange meat because they eat shellfish....
    - Not greenpeace marines, but industry and nature are kept separate. Factories and such are constructed in/on barren mountains, away from and above the forests.
    - Human population lives in trees. In houses built on the sides, or with the truly huge trees, tunneled into the living wood.
    - There are raccoons. Although cute, they are also very smart and tend to troll unwary humans.
    - Native humans are not "feral" but because of the lack of farmland they are almost all hunter gatherers. Fish and game are not only plentiful, but outnumber humans by a huge margin and pose a threat if they are not kept away from settlements.

That hasen't really been disscussed, but I imagine that more renown = bigger badder ax
    >> Starshadow 08/16/11(Tue)01:29 No.15953647
    - Wild bears are pretty bro and lazy. If a normal human threatens one, the bear will basically stare at him for a while and go "seriously man? seriously?". However if you push one too far, threaten a cub, steal their food, or claim dominance they will flip their shit and go berserk like you would expect.
    - The "feral" part of feral world refers more to the local flaura and fauna of Sylvanus than the people who live there. Far from being something to preserve, the forest is the enemy. A dark and scary place full of dangerous animals. While trees are felled for fuel and building materials, most are cut simply to keep the forest from overrunning human settlements.
    - Sylvanus is almost completely green except for the poles which are icy and barren. Humans live all over the planet, but the more industrial cities are all located on broad plateaus of rock that rise above the forest. The one exception is the planet's central starport which occupies its own island.

Red background, a white tree with impossible long roots and branches, but the Axe man, the Axe needs to be change. Either its a really epic two sided axe which resides inside the tree or it could be Two Axes which are placed outside the tree, and maybe even outside the background, and stand over it, protecting it, guarding it. Th Forest of Sanguinius, is sacred ground.
lumbermarines only go there on pilgrimages to see the great Sanguine tree at it's center.

The Librarians can reside in their apple orchird, the apothecaries I was thinking about having them watch over the maple forests where they produce and bless are chapter's sacred syrup.

    >>15953650
Okay, so they carry one seed on them in order to plant them later in the fields of battle. Maybe they should also carry a sacred container of syrup, in this case the syrup wouldbe use to represent and honor the blood of their planet, their people, their chapter and brothers and their Primarch which they'd pour on the seed.

Which makes the Forest all that more important and since they overstrenght they could always be on the verge of running into a shortage of syrups, that would also explain why they don't share the syrup with the other Blood Angel Sucessors, they can barely feed themselves and if a Lumber doesn't periodicaly drink some syrup then they fall to a even worst Thirst and Rage than normal BA chapters. So then it would only be the Chapter Master who makes the pilgrimage, who only makes such a journey when one of our core worlds is threatened with destruction.

When fielded, their very presence turns a certain defeat into impossible victory.

We should have a single time where the original Founding Father, in his Contemptor-class Dread, is called upon to defend their homeworld of Sylvanus from a concerted Dark Eldar invasion, or a Chaos force led by the vengeance-seeking Daemon Prince. When the forces of disorder push to the very base of the Emperor Tree far below the Chapter grounds, Lord Redwood and Ol' Blue march forth for the first time in millennia, wielding the World Feller. Together they would cleave through the enemy forces to duel the leader in an epic clash that saw the enemy dead and its army in disarray and retreating. The Dreadnought then marches back into his woods, stopping only to return World Feller to a speechless Chapter Master.

He never says a word. He arrives, he protects, and then he returns. He doesn't need words, because his actions speak for him far more eloquently. And his actions say only one thing: He is a man.

Its only 185 points for a Venerable Rifleman. That is if you do not include extra armor/saga of the majesty/wolf tail talisman etc. 175 for Heavy Flamer/Multi-melta. Feasibly, given the points cost, you could field them. But the 125 Rifleman Dread is more likely. And that is just in game.

In fluff, I would see them in only the most dire circumstance, such as the attack on their homeworld/fortress monastery.

Perhaps a sudden warpstorm in the nearest system to their homeworld allows a large Nurgle fleet to slip in so quickly that it takes the entire Chapter unawares. It would explain the dire threat and make it understandable why only a single force was even able to reach their homeworld. Due to actions elsewhere, the defense of their homeworld was severely undermanned, which is why the Death Guard/Plague Marines/Daemon Army was able to invade and reach the Emperor Tree holding up the Chapter.

Lord Redwood is the only Dreadnought who marched on the enemy because the rest of his retinue knew that if he was marching to war, then they would not be needed.

    "Roman Cavalry Ranks
The following list indicates a general chain of command and various titles within the cavalry:
Praefectus Alae or Praefectus Equitum: Cavalry commander, could be either Roman or a non-Roman.
    Decurion: Commanded a single turmae.
Duplicarius: Second in command to the Decurion.
Sesquiplicarius: Third in command to the Decurion.
Eques or Eques Alaris: A cavalryman or auxiliary cavalryman.

The cavalry also maintained several positions of the infantry like the principales.

Some other titles in no particular order:
    Centurio Exercitator: Cavalry training officer.
    Eques Speculator: A mounted scout.
    Eques Stablesianus: Cavalry stablehand.
Eques Sapsarius: Mounted medical personnel. "

So, the highest commanding officer, this Chaplain and Keeper of the Eternal Pyre, should hold the rank of Praefectus Equitum rather than Equitatus, because that just means 'cavalry'

Maybe the Daemon was winning, and Lord Redwood had dropped the axe. Joseph picked it up and with a heavy blow, broke its back.

And that's how he came to be in possession of it in the first place. Lord Redwood would see the Chapter Master as worthy of it, and allow him its use.

Which implies extensive bionic repair and augmentation. But it stands to reason that others would have some to an extent as well. Especially the companions of high-ranking Astartes. They participate in battle just like any other Astartes, so it stands to reason that they can be injured and repaired like any other. But the more revered and ancient you are, the better made and capable your bionics. So Smokey would have artificer-level enhancements, while others may only have bionic replacements.

Prepare for a 2 part post:

I'd vote no. Bears are not centric to the original 2 threads. Yes we care for them, yes we raise them, yes we view them as symbolic companions, but thats a bit far. At the end of the day, they are bears, awesome bears yes, but simply bears. They are not direct descendants of the Emperor's will. They are not of the Sanguine bloodline. I would understand a burial, perhaps with a ceremony, maybe even cremation with their Marine if they fall together, but bear dreadnoughts, are just retarded. We don't need bear in everything. Same as we don't need Maple syrup in everything. A reference once or twice, yes that is fine. It adds character, but making it the be-all end-all ends up driving the chapter down a road that I feel does not emphasize its potential. For example:

The Emperor's Nightmares, are a good example of a serious chapter. They have well written fluff, and do not dwell solely on one aspect. Instead their fluff meshes together to form a well-rounded character or feel.
    >> OP !!v11kvgDbkWO 08/16/11(Tue)04:48 No.15955011
    >>15955006

The Angry Marines are on the opposite side of the spectrum. Their fluff, while awesome, is blatantly retarded. But once, you understand they are a comedic chapter rather then a serious one, it makes sense. Their character is cut down to embody a singular concept and they do this well.

We are at a border. We have chopped off our branches that would lead to seriousness favoring some humor. Yet we are not full humor either. This is supported by our many Judeo-Christian and historical references. While we may joke about maple syrup or beards, we do give off a level of distinction that marks us as formal. An example of similarity to us would be the Guardians Exemplar, or as others know them, the Nazi/Eugenics Marines. They are, at the end, a lighthearted parodic jab at the writing of Matt Ward, focusing on the one thing he holds dear. The geneseed of Roboute Guilliman. Yet at the same time, they possess a level of sobriety that gives them character, in the form of their Sumerian or Biblical fluff (see their story of the Tower of Babel).

What I am saying is, it is in my opinion, that we should tone down the level of this, so as not to become like the Space Wolves, a chapter that is trying to be taken seriously, with fluff that is outright ridiculous. It would be better to maintain jokes yes, but not focus on one aspect repeatedly. We have enough symbolism in Wickermen, and trees. Bears do not need to creep into every orifice as well. Have them a part of our fluff yes. But limit how far we take it. We don't need bullshit like bears interred in dreadnoughts or bearclaws or bear tooth talismans etc.

    Power cabers.

I know it sounds ridiculous at first but think about it.

They wouldn't need to carry a charge as long as normal power weapons so their excessive size isn't such a concern.

Like in a power fist or crozius arcanum a power field can be adjusted to cover odd shapes easily enough. The power field would allow a caber to be every bit the charge-stopping horror it used to be in the 41st millennium as well. Even terminators would be flattened as thick trees with short-life power field generators attached to them came crashing through their torsos without slowing.

Since close combat is tactically viable in 40k, charge-breaking very much is as well, and carrying some of these around to bring up as a counter-charge unit would be no big deal for a group of Astartes.

Honestly, I don't see that working. You can't cure the Red Thirst or the Black Rage. However, I could understand it working as a depressant or sedative. Something that relaxes them, which they may, or may not mistakenly account to as the cause of their low outbreaks of the Red Thirst/Black Rage. That being said, this low "outbreak" might simply be due to the spreading of their forces. Imperial allies might not always see the outbreaks and this could also be reason for speculation. In the end, they do feel the Red Thirst, and the Black Rage like any other successor. The reports of their incidence, and circumstances involved in Imperial reports however could easily be misconceived in that, people see their maple syrup as a protective charm, when it is simply no more then a machination to get stoned.

So the syrup is just fabled by imperial citizens and guardsmen to suppress the red thirst and black rage; when in reality we just like to drink ourselves into a diabetic coma

I mean, when I first thought of that I was thinking on how I could fluff the syrup, so whether or not it really works or is just their imagination is good.

Well actually, them believeing that the syrup is able to hold back the Thirst and the Rage while it really doesn't does, kind of fit the universe.

Pretty much, and this is accentuated by the imperial citizen's low amount of interaction with those who have succumbed already.

The low interaction due to the whicker men being secluded in the Forest of Sanguinius.
