78 KB SMITH QUEST. part 5 Indonesian Gentleman 08/14/11(Sun)00:03 No.15928972
    Last thread:

We're Quin Fuller Smithsson, the daughter of a renowned blacksmith (at least around these parts), and right now we're in the north woods, looking for a good piece of Wild Oak to be made into the handle of our warhammer. Armed with our heirloom axe and accompanied by three adventurers we've befriended, we managed to kill two wild boars and took their meat, tusks, and pelt. Moving closer to the clump of Wild Oak, we encounter three Gnolls in a clearing, they seem to be discussing something seriously in Gnollspeak. They're oblivious to your party.
    Decision?

That's our rogue actually. Formerly Kendall Slicks, male, now she's Dahlia Slicks, female.
Serves him well for peeping on Quin and Llywelyn (our female elf mage).

You ask your companions, which is composed of Kendall- well, now it's Dahlia Slicks, a human Rogue, Llywelyn MacAran, female elf mage, and Hertzog Gobsmacks, half-orc Paladin of Dunder, former lumberjack.
Hertzog said he knew some Gnollspeak, but not much, just simple phrases. The others don't know any Gnollspeak.

You whisper to Hertzog. "Well, why don't you try speaking to them, then? We might help them."
"Okay, here goes." Hertzog strolled into the clearing and says something in Gnollspeak. The three Gnolls perked up, and rose to their feet. One of them says something else. Hertzog and the Gnoll conversed for a while...

    Bump.
Current inventory: 10 slabs of wild boar bacon, 4 wild boar tusks, and 2 wild boar pelts.
    Wallet: 3Gc, 25 Sc and 27 Cc. 1 Gc = 10 Sc = 100 Cc.

    Skills:
Basic smithing - 5/5: You know smithing by heart, because your dad taught you to the best of his abilities.
    Metalsmithing - 5/5
Weaponsmithing - 4/5: you learned some weapon making from your dad, but haven't actually used said weapons enough to get the right feel for them.
Alcohol tolerance - 4/5: you first drank ale when you were ten, but well, time (and volume) would still get you.
Hammerwielding - 3/5: well, you know how to use a hammer properly, but not as a weapon.
Pickwielding - 4/5: apparently you know how to use picks as a tool and a weapon.
Axewielding - 3/5: you know how to chop wood, but not how to chop enemies.
Mining - 3/5: thanks to Uncle Grum, you know how to look for metal ores yourself.
Enchanting - 2/5: you just learned the basics with Llywelyn.
Drawing - 3/5: sometimes, in your off time, you like to doodle. Sometimes an order needs some careful planning. You're no Da Vinci, though

The dialogue seemed to have turned sour, what with angrier tones strewn about by the Gnolls. But then Hertzog mentioned something, and the Gnolls lighten up. Hertzog motioned for the rest of the party to join him.
"Wow, I didn't know you have excellent diplomatic skills, Hertzog... I thought it would go badly."
"Nah, it was nothing. As soon as I mentioned wild boar bacon they wanted some. Anyways, meet Rugar, Truro, and Sajag. They're from a Gnoll tribe further north. Seems like they were hunting, and they got lost."
The three Gnolls grin sheepishly, which amounts to 'bloodthirsty' to the rest of the party.
"Ah, so they're low on food and stuff?"
"Kinda like that. If we give some bacon, they'll help us carry things to the village, where they'd try to get a good bearing on where their tribe is."
The Gnolls lick their lips in anticipation. One of them is emitting growling sounds from his belly.

"Hertzog, tell them that we won't give the bacon unless they have something to trade it with."
Hertzog converses again, which was met with a disappointed-sound from the Gnolls. But then one of them perked up and rummaged through his pack. He came back with some stuff:
    - a chipped short sword, with a double-eagle motif on it that's been scratched
    - a metal mug, which is made of pewter
    - two bear hide, as big as the Gnoll
    - six wild boar tusks
He speaks Gnollspeak again with Hertzog, which then explained to you that they'll trade one of these items for 3 or 5 bacon slabs.

You, fine gentleman, are one lucky fella.

You charge, yelling something about Leroys and Jenkins, while the rest of your party are preparing their weapons. With your strong, smith-tempered arms swinging the axe, the wolves are struck down; Out of six, there is now only one still alive. It limps and whimpers, its mind undoubtedly scarred by the encounter. Hertzog's jaw hung loose, as well as Dahlia's and Llywelyn's.
    Somehow, Llywelyn blushes a bit.
"Bloody hell, Quin! I didn't know you had such... strength in you!"
"I've never seen someone so eager to go in battle, at least since I left the monastery of Dunder." Hertzog expresses his suprise.
"Dang, that's sick-nasty, yo!" Dahlia shrieks, obviously not adjusted to her vocal chords yet.
And so, you returned to your house, with an additional five Wolf pelts, a Deer antler, and 30 Wolf teeth. The party departs to the Inn, eager to get some food after that walk in the woods.
Now, what do you want to do? Go into town and see the market/inn/bar, or make something out of your newly-acquired materials?

Inventory: 48 mineroach carapaces, 2 mineroach queen carapaces, a cave Bas hide, 3/4 bar of copper, 4 bars of pig iron, 10 coal, 5 hematite, 2 chalcopyrite. 5 slabs of wild boar bacon, 4 wild boar tusks, 2 wild boar pelts, 2 bear pelts, 5 wolf pelts, 1 deer antler, 30 wolf teeth, and 1 Wild Oak sapling wood.

By your rolls, the Warhammer would be of above-average quality, but it will take more than one day to make it.
    Three, in fact.
But whatever we'll make for Llywelyn would be a very nice gift for her...
So, we drop by the Inn and meet Llywelyn, as usual, working as a part-time bar-maid to finish her table and chair debts. Hertzog, as usual, is the assistant barman, and Kendall- oops, Dahlia, is mopping, but not as sullen-looking as last time.
"Hey Llywelyn! C'mere! I got something for you!"
Llywelyn finishes her deliveries, and then hurried over.
You hand her a necklace made of ten wolf teeth, strung together with whatever string and bead you can find in your house.
"Why... thank you, Quin! This is a beautiful necklace!" She blushes, hard. Obviously, she likes the gift.
Okay, now what do we do? Do we start working on the warhammer, or do we stay in the village for a bit longer, maybe listen to rumors and such?

you don't need to roll for rumors.
Anyways, you stick around and listen to the latest scuttlebutt. Some miners are arguing about going into the 4th level of the village mine, although it's crawling with Mineroaches and Crawlings it has abundant Chalcopyrite and Magnetite. If only someone would clear the levels for them, they'd be crawling all over the place by now.
A bar patron says to another that there's gonna be a foreign noble visiting the land, and the village is in the list of places to see. The other bar patron says it's not a noble, but a celebrity from another faraway land, with a background in gladiatorial fighting.

We then go home, with a clearer picture how to craft the warhammer... but although it will be faster, the quality would drop a bit (averaging rolls). Anyway, we start work, and is abotu halfway done when Llywelyn drops in for our daily enchanting lessons.

"Dahliaaaaa! Why are you sneaking around here againnnn???" You bolt and chase her out the window, running some laps, while Llywelyn laughs like a Gnoll watching Whose Line is it Anyways. After some running around and finally tackling Dahlia and bringing her in like some game, slumped over your shoulders, you then make tea for three. Jokes, opinions, and a recap of the rumors from the bar were had. Llywelyn and Dahlia excuse themselves when it got late, and you checked Dahlia thoroughly, just in case she rummaged through your wardrobe and made off with your undies. Seeing that your undies are there and accounted for, you then give Stella, your pet mineroach, some dirt, and proceed to go to sleep, happy that you have such nice companionship.

Practicing our drawing, we start out with a simple doodle... but then you get the gist of drawing stuff. You draw a nice little picture of Stella chewing some dirt. Then you remembered that you have the plans for a Mineroach Queen carapace breastplate, and headed off to work it. Three hours later, you made the breastplate, simple in its design but serves its function well. The strings that held the breastplate can be slid to accomodate the wearer's bust.
We finished this just as noon arrives, so what do we do now? Go to the inn and talk to the adventurers? Or do we create trinkets from the massive amount of mineroach carapaces lying about in our house?

P.S. we did make a mineroach carapace bra, though we gave it to Dahlia.
It's bigger than her bust, though.

    TRINKETS!
Not only will we have many different stuff to sell, but they will also serve as a practice for more delicate stuff.
In fact, we should also put minor glamor enchantments on each an every of them for enchantment practice. We cannot rely on theory all the time, practice is important.

usually it's better if we enchant it while we make it. Don't worry, the warhammer's still not done yet. And according to

we don't have suitable metal for it... we'd need to find more iron ores and smelt them.

    >>15931915
bused, ada orang Indonesia lain rupanya?
Anyway, right now we can only enchant small things like rings and accessories, but if we get 3/5 skills we can enchant knives and small armor like that. At 4/5 we can enchant bigger weapons and full armor, and at 5/5 we can enchant all kinds of weapon and armor with better enchantments.

By the way, let's just say that the 'warhammer' we're making now is the prototype, made from pig iron. At least it will make a good weapon substiture when you go in the mines.

I think it is better if we get a supplier for ores instead of dungeoncrawling the mines.

Taking up a pickaxe to personally mine the ores should be last resort when we are completely out of funds.

Woah the thread suddenly gained speed!

Anyhow, for today, you make 20 trinkets out of 10 mineroach carapaces, and enchant them with minor 'beauty' effects. Some you manage to enchant successfully, but some just... flunked. Hmm, must be how you say the mantra that makes it work well. You slowly learn how to enchant better.
Then, evening comes, and with it, Llywelyn too. She noticed your work, and taught you how to enchant properly. Hmm. You're getting the hang of it! At the end of the lesson, you have 15 beauty-enchanted mineroach carapace trinkets, and 5 plain mineroach carapace trinkets.
Not bad. You feel that you can enchant bigger stuff after a bit more of her lessons.

So, what do we do the next day? 1d20 for customers, as usual.

Eh, Uncle Grum did say he'll give you 10% of whatever he found in the mines, but only if you visit him in the village mine. Also, clearing more levels enables Uncle Grum to mine that level, and so far we've cleared only the third level (first and second is already clear).
    -Level 1: Hematite, Coal, Chalcopyrite
-Level 2: same as lv 1
    -Level 3: Hematite, Chalcopyrite, Bauxite
    -Level 4: Chalcopyrite, Bauxite, Magnetite

Also, they say that below level 5 there's magic crystals.

Hmm, we didn't visit the inn. Plan to visit the inn in the evening for more information/rumors and good time. Information on high-quality ores would be the best.

Work on your warhammer again. During the breaks doodle stuff to practice your enchantment.

Also, show your new breastplate to your friends.

The next day, you put your trinkets out front, so any passers-by would notice them. You also work on the pig-iron warhammer, and taking breaks to doodle about what sort of enchantment you'll put in the final warhammer. You also made the pig-iron warhammer to be detachable from the handle, so you can just switch the head later.
Later in the evening, you visit the Inn with your breastplate, and suprisingly, the Gnolls from the woods are there, too. If you're not mistaken, Rugar, Truro, and Sajag... and they seem to be conversing with Hertzog. The bar owner's looking wary, but Hertzog and the Gnolls look a bit relaxed.
"Hi Hertzog! What's up with the Gnolls?"
"Oh hey, Quin! It seems they've managed to return to their tribe since we last met. Now, the tribe is asking them to be an envoy of sorts, since the tribe doesn't want trouble from the people living here. They're here to learn our language and customs. I'm going to teach them how to speak in Midlish, since it's the way of Dunder to help those in need."
One of the Gnolls then looks at you, and grinned. "Yas! we, we try speek Midiss, wit Hetzog. He gud ticher. We hep gard vilige fo Hetzog hep."
Oh, that makes sense. By the way, Midlish is our language.

So, basically, Uncle Grum can go to levels 1-3 for now, and get us a random number of Chalcopyrite, Coal, Hematite, and Bauxite.
Chalcopyrite contains Copper and Iron, Hematite and Magnetite contain iron, Bauxite contain Alumunium. All but Bauxite can be smelted on the mine's smelter, but Bauxite might need some magical help.

High Quality products need high quality materials, and a good roll on the dice. For example, hematite iron is of lesser quality from magnetite iron.

Anyway, here's a list of ores I copied from Wikipedia:
Argentite: Ag2S for production of silver
    Barite: BaSO4
Bauxite Al2O3 for production of aluminium
    Beryl: Be3Al2(SiO3)6
    Bornite: Cu5FeS4
    Cassiterite: SnO2
Chalcocite: Cu2S for production of copper
    Chalcopyrite: CuFeS2
Chromite: (Fe, Mg)Cr2O4 for production of chromium
Cinnabar: HgS for production of mercury
    Cobaltite: (Co, Fe)AsS
    Columbite-Tantalite or Coltan: (Fe, Mn)(Nb, Ta)2O6
    Galena: PbS
Gold: Au, typically associated with quartz or as placer deposits
    Hematite: Fe2O3
    Ilmenite: FeTiO3
    Magnetite: Fe3O4
    Molybdenite: MoS2
    Pentlandite:(Fe, Ni)9S8
    Pyrolusite:MnO2
    Scheelite: CaWO4
    Sphalerite: ZnS
Uraninite (pitchblende): UO2 for production of metallic uranium
    Wolframite: (Fe, Mn)WO4

"Ah, ah! We, we get. Th- thank you. Som-tim, yas, we, we visit."
Oh well. We sit on our favourite spot, while listening in to the latest rumors. Of course, the Gnolls are the center of attention right now, but you manage to hear something about the supposed foreign gladiator celebrity that's visiting. She's also a Gnoll! Other than that, the miners are still wondering what's the best protection against Crawling bites, since the village doctor doesn't have enough antivenom for it.
Llywelyn sits with you, her shift ended. "So, Quin, what brings you here?"
"Oh, nothing, just listening to the latest gossip and rumors. By the way, I brought this along..."

Same like in this world, but almost everything can be enchanted in this setting. Magic crystals are unique to this setting, being crystals imbued with primal magic, which could be 'molded' into other kinds of magic. For example, the mining hat they wear in the mine has a small magic crystal embedded on it, with light magic infused on it.

Oh dear. It seems he mistook you for a man.
"I'm sorry, sir, but I'm the daughter of Bjorn Smithsson."

It's late evening already, so Llywelyn went with you for your enchantmen lessons. Practicing with the already-enchanted trinkets, she dispelled the enchantment in one of them and lets you re-enchant the trinket. With careful guidance, you now learn how to disenchant things, albeit the bigger an object and the longer it's been enchanted will hamper its disenchantment. You'd need a powerful disenchant spell (you'd need to be a mage to do it) or many disenchant rituals over a long period of time to dispel old, big enchanted objects.
Well! Time to roll 1d20, to see if we can reach that 3/5 on enchantment!

Ooh yeah, 3/5 get! After some back and forth with Llywelyn, now you get the idea of how to enchant bigger things! Although, you haven't practiced this yet.
Anyway, after the lessons, you talk to Llywelyn over some tea about Dahlia/Kendall. "The sex-change spell, eh? I don't think it would be permanent. It's actually made not to be permanent... but I don't know how long he'll stay being a she. I did sneeze while drunk, while casting the spell... Now I have to figure out if it's the timed-expire spell, or the trigger-expire spell."
    "Timed-expire? Trigger-expire?"
"Well, timed-expire spells usually dispel themselves over a set period of time, while trigger-expire spells usually dispel on a trigger. You know the story about the princess and the frog? Kinda like that, but the trigger could be anything."
"Gee, it must be hard on Dahlia."
"I don't think so... she seemed to moan to herself at night. That bloody girl still has the mind of a boy! Anyway, I'd need a good magic wand to determine the spell, but the nearest magic shop is at the city."
"Oh, you mean the city to the East?"
"Yep. Even then, we might not get what we're looking for, but at least I can place an order for the wand there."
    Hmmmm.
And so, it gets late, and as usual, Llywelyn kisses you on the forehead as her weird Artheran 'friendship ritual'.
What should we do tomorrow? Visit the mine? And oh, feel free to say which kingdom or nation the village of Bjorginville is under.

Well, 3/5 doesn't mean warhammer enchanting yet, but we're trying anyways, right?
So, the next day, we try to enchant the almost-finished warhammer with a 'reduced weight' enchantment- so the holder would be able to direct the blows better, and the enemy receives the full weight of the hammer. You focus... say the right sequence of mantras in ancient Artheran... and bind it using the True Name of the warhammer... all the while, finishing and shaping the warhammer's head. At last, you have enchanted the warhammer! You're not sure if you can do this with other warhammers without more training, though you're more confident on trying it on knifes and the like. You slide and lock the hammerhead onto the Wild Oak handle, and there we go, a nice, prototype enchanted warhammer! You just wish it's made of sturdier metal, though, but hey, it's a prototype.
Feeling refreshed, you practice yoru drawing, this time on the landscape. Stella is watching from your shoulder (she likes perching there), while you draw the hills, the mine, the forest, and the village... Well, it's no masterpiece, but you feel kinda proud of yourself.
