    223 KB Bodysnatcher Quest 16 Brain In A Jar 07/30/11(Sat)16:31 No.15759397
You are a strange creature, capable of taking over other lifeforms to serve as your vessel. Your current host, Jack Winters, was unbeknownst to you a drug addict, and overdosed on speedball. To survive, you bonded with him, but this damaged you, leaving you separated from the bodysnatcher command structure. An individual by accident, you are hunted by the cyborg aliens, the forces guided by the illuminati called the Wise, and your own kin.

Catherine and you managed to defeat the bodysnatchers sent after you, though the new subtype, the Leader, managed to surprise you with it's sonic weaponry. After making sure the others were safe and resting, you headed out alone to confront the Overseer.

    Your known abilities are:
    - reinforcing your muscle and bone tissue, making you several times stronger, faster and tougher
    - growing weapons from your arms, limited to one on each arm in any combination:a hooked, double edged blade on your forearm, claws, a spike that springs out from your wrist underneath your palm or launchable bone spikes
    - hardening your skin into thick, segmented bone plate armor resistant to heat and energy weapons, and growing a membrane under your skin, that contains fluid that hardens on impact
    - absorbing ingested organic material, that you can use to increase muscle and bone density(animal tissue is the most effective)
    - the ability to call forth your host's memories, skills and knowledge
    - altering your appearance, includin skin\hair\eye colour, facial features, height, build, and gender, though the more elaborate the change is, the more time and effort it takes.
    - producing almost any kind of drug, poison or acid in liquid form, including sedatives, that you can deliver either at high pressure from an opening that can be created anywhere on your body, or through the wristspike.
    - emitting pheromones that influence humans
    - sensing the mind-link of bodysnatchers
    - enhanced senses, capable of switching to different spectrums (infravision, ultrasound, noise filtering, etc.)
    - fiber-optic nervous system, allowing you to ignore pain to some extent, and speeding up your reflexes by orders of magnitude
    - a pair of leathery wings growing from your shoulder blades, with a bio-fuel fed jet system underneath it, allowing you extremely fast aerial movement
    - superhuman sense of balance
    - four combat tentacles

The moon's pale rays reflect from the armour of the Leader standing to your left, it's tentacles nervously twitching, swaying back and forth like a snake's tongue. The silvery light makes the patterns on the bone look black, drained of their colour, barbed spirals running across it's body. The pair of Warriors hiss and growl, crouching low, ready to charge you at a moment's notice. The four Infiltrators nervously grasp their rifles in the white van blocking your exit, and the sound of a dozen weapons being readied can be heard from the houses around you.

You stand there, fists clenched tight, the seconds going by, bringing more and more tension into the air. You realise something. They are afraid of you. The hands grasping the matt black stocks tremble, the mind-link showing you the icy terror radiating from them. Thunder rumbles, far to the south, and they almost spring into action, stopping when they realise you haven't moved an inch.

    Wat do?

If I remember correctly, our armor is capable of stopping bullets. Unless they have some really big guns (or armor piercing rounds) we shouldn't bother with infiltrators.
Let's kill the Leader first. We don't want to get hit with sonic wibrator in the worst moment possible. Use our jets to close in and finish him off quickly.

    Are we rolling?

I wonder if the Overseer would be willing to agree to a truce? Well, willing or not such a thing would only be worthwhile as long as the other Overseers agreed to it too.

So screw them, let's RIP AND TEAR

The jets form with a slight crack, blue flame erupting for a split second, pushing you towards the Leader. From teh corner of your eye you can see the rest move, bullets raining down on your bone plate, bouncing off like pebbles. Your tentacles form mid-air, blades slipping out of their tips, and you hit the creature, both arms stretched out, hands grabbing the biceps, the wrist spikes burrowing their way through the joints, the shoulders dislocating with a wet pop.

The bodysnatcher falls down under you, and your tentacles strike down again and again, tearing it's limbs apart. You move to finish it off, but the two Warriors bowl into you, pushing you to the ground, their feet quickly stomping down on your slimy appendages, immobilising them. While one holds your arms, the other raisies a fist, hook-blade glittering in the dim light.

Wat do? (any clever plans, or just fihgt bakc?)

I assume we're on the ground. Then, try to "curl up" and kick the warrior holding you. We should be flexible enough, especially after studying the cat anatomy. Ideally, the other warrior will miss us and get his blade stuck in the concrete. Weaken your tentacles, so they will snap off. We can morph them again later and they're working against us now.

I say we exhale a burst of toxins. Fear response equals increased heart rate and breathing, which means poisons are more effective. Shut down the warriors with a strong hit of whatever it takes to scramble a bodysnatcher's connections.

Drwaing up your knees to your chest, you kick out, and send the creature above you flying. It crashes unto the wall of the house, plaster covering it. Turning your head back, you spit out a glob of toxins and acid into the other Warriors eyes, the beast screaming in pain and terror, stumbling backwards.

Hopping up to your feet, your limbs shiver as they change, and with an almost lazy gesture, you rainse them towards the confused enemies, letting loose a devastating barrage of spikes. They impact with a series of loud thuds, tearing apart their tagets with ease.

A small explosion draws your attention, and you sway to the side, the missile launched from one of the roofs passing you by harmlessly, punching in a section of wall behind you. A hailstorm of bullets bouncing off you, you raise an appendage in the direction of every small group of Infiltrators, letting loose a few short bursts.

You glance around in the sudden quiet, noting that the Leaders chest was caved in by the foot of the poisoned Warrior in it's struggle. Extending your mind-link, you notice that the Overseer has escaped out back, from the feel of it trying to run away on foot.

The tentacles, now nothing more than a nuisance, retract, giving way to a pair of leathery wings. With a burst of flame, you are in the air, following the Overseer at a breackneck speed, dodging chairs, trees and fences, your surroundings a blur.

Spotting the running figure of a man, you slow down, and drop down on it, pinning it to the ground, crouching on it's back. It let's out a wheeze as the air is pushed out of it, whimpering for a second, before turning it into a rattling, rough laugh. Turning it's face up - a handsome, thirthy something man- it smiles at you, eyes wide and dilated, flames of mad glee burning in them.

"You're not going to get away whit this, you know. You, and your friends are living on borrowed time." It let's out a hysterical chuckle, the fear evidently gone.

You raise a hand towards the sky, morphing it into the clawed shape, and slam it donw on it's head, talons sinking deep into it's skull, the tendrils extending, burrowing deep for the creature inside. The Overseer keeps laughing in that strange, high-pitched voice, and you are hit by a sense of unease.

You consider withdrawing the tendrils, when something reaches out to them, latches on, and starts pumping something inside you. With a start you realise that it is the bodysnatcher, using tendrils of it's own, shoving itself inside you, the tissue burning you like fire. The mind-link shivers, and the creature's mind hits you with everything it's got.

Struggling against it, you let out a snarl, and let more tendrils inside, trying to devour it before it can hurt you further. It seems to take ages, and when you finally finish, you note that it started raining sometime during your fight. The ground underneath your feet is soaked, the corpse laying on the ground slowly cooling.

As you stumble to your feet, every fiber of your being cries out in pain, your head pounding, your hands and legs shaking. You will away the morphs, and head back to the motel, your hand holding on to every object or wall beside you to keep you from falling over.

You arrive at the motel later in a daze, cold, shivering and feeling sick. The rain keeps relentlessly beating at you as you open the door, the gutters overflowing in the streets. Somehow, you manage to climb up to the first floor, and step into a room. You hear a concerned voice calling out your name, the words distant, coming from the end of long tunnel. Without replying, you lean against the wall, and slowly slide down to the floor, crawling into a corner to sleep, curling up like a wounded animal.

    You dream.

A devastated landscape lies around you, forests and glades burned down, ash and soot trailing in the air. The place seems familiar, some connection lingering between it and you. The sigh of the destruction fills you with pain, something close to you, a part of you, gone.

As you walk around, you spot a strange plant, no, a sapling, growing out from the scorched ground, it's leaves and branches alien, different from anything you have seen before, yet it's sight gives you a renewed sense of hope. You step closer, the thing growing in front of your eyes, becoming a huge tree, towering above it's surroundings, branches reaching out all around. Small flowers and fruits blossom, filling the air with sweet, heavy scents.

You wake to the unyielding hardness of the wooden floor underneath you, noting that someone threw a blanket over you while you slept. The pain has faded, though you feel a change, something fundamentally different in you.

    >Choose one mutation:

    -Monstrous Strength
Your physical strength increases in magnitude, making you stronger than it would seem possible.

    -Armoured Juggernaut
Your body alters to create a multi-layered protective armour, making you a walking tank, though stripping you of some mobility while using it.

    -Protean Nature
Morphing becomes second nature, your form freely flowing between states, the energy and time required to do so significantly reduced.

    -Perfect Predator
Your form alters, allowing you to be nearly silent, your body not appearing on any digital sensors, any scent you might have had gone.

Strenght makes us really, really strong (duh), Juggernaut makes us a bit slower, but almost invicible, Protean Nature makes shifting instantaneous, Perfect Predator makes us stealthy and obscures us from sensors.
As for usefulness. We don't really have one modus operandi. We act as is most approbiate in given situation. Homever, we planned on infiltrating the Wise, and Predator may help us with that, while Protean would enhance our overall efficiency.

You nod, deciding that you'll try to wrap your head around it later, and turn to Daisy. "Could you take a look at my head, kiddo? Poke around, see what's different?"

She nods, but keeps out of arm's reach. You can feel her taking a measure of you, and her eyes go wide. She slowly starts to back away. "You're not like me anymore. Not like me, the one in the yellow house, or the bad guys Cathie took care of." She screams "WHAT ARE YOU?" and runs outside.

It seems we're becoming something bigger, badder and scarier than ordinary bodysnatcher. We're a goddamn aberration, at least judging by Daisy's reaction. Whatever that Overseer tried to do to us, I think it didn't went as he wanted.

Okay, action. Go after Daisy, but don't chase her. Just make sure she doesn't run away too far. She needs a moment to calm down. Then, try to turn off make yourself wisible to sensors. Gather everyone, explain what happened last night, plan next action.

"Daisy, calm down. Kiddo? Cath, help me out here." She looks a little to teh left of your face, having troubles focusing on you, but nods, and you both walk out to see Kellery standing in the corridor, Daisy literally hiding behind her skirt, her face poking out a bit on the left side, a wary gaze keeping tabs on you. Kellery seems about as confused as everyone, and you try to explain, when Catherine bumps into you from behind, then reaches out with a frown, grabbing your shoulder.

Her eyes go in and out of focus for a moment, then she leaps back, her face twisted into a feral snarl. Her hands shift and ripple, the fake human look of them dissapearing, and turn into large multi-barelled weapons in front of your eyes.

You raise your hands, palms out. "Let's just calm down for a moment, I'll try to make it go away, okay?" You focus, trying to undo the change.

You scream, and drop to your knees, your stomach heaving, bile rushing up your throat. You can almost hear someone talking to you, but the pain is too much, you can't see or think from it. You lie there, helpless, and time seems to slow to a crawl.

The next thing you remember is the sight of the ceiling, dark spots on the dirty white background. The pain has receded, but it hasn't completely faded. The stingy, unpleasent smell of your vomit lingers in the air.

You realize that there is something under your head, and you twist to look up, seeing Catherine's relieved face. "Hey, hey, don't try to move, everything is okay, it's over." You seem to be laying on the same corridor, your head in her lap. She doesn't have any problem seeing you know, either.

She laughs a little, tension visibly escaping her, though she turns serious after looking at you again. "I'm sorry, Jack. It didn't work. You were out for most of a day, and with some help from Professor Kellery, I did some changes. Rerouted some sensors, added in some optical lenses," she points a finger at her eyes" among other things. It's still kind of freaky, but I can see you now."

Daisy rushes in, and practically throws herself on you, sobbing out an apology, how she's so very sorry, it won't happen again, and so on. You pat her head and tell her that it's okay, and stand up, noticing Kellery leaning against the frame of a door. "That Overseer really did a number on you, didn't it."

Her words knock a piece of information you absorbed loose, and you stop dead in your tracks, mouth half open in answer. The Queen responsible for this area has deemed you a threat, prioritising you over all else. It is massing all available troops, hundreds upon hundreds of bodysnatchers of all kind of types marching towards the city. But that isn't what stopped you.

It is making Hunters. Real ones, three in fact. The first one will be ready to move in just a day.

Man, I think the problem is the irregular schedule, short-ish threads and generally few threads a week.
When you started, you made about 3 threads a week, which was pretty ballin'.
I participated heavily in the beginning (I had more time back then and could be online during the threads which are generally during the night for me).

One thing that makes this quest go is the sense of accomplishment and regular upgrades. I think that direction is great and you should continue with rewards (although don't go overboard).

Anyway, more threads would be great .... if there were more players of course. Unfortunately I don't think I ever be in position to participate for the next month or two.
Don't give up on this, Brain, I really like this quest and always read it from the archives!

For the next course of action I think we should pack our shit and get the fuck away from here, no sense in trying to fight entire army and 3 super-soldiers.

Also, I think there will be a spike of intrest in the quest when we go after the Fools. With this new upgrade of ours we should be able to just walk to their base unobstructed. They seem to have heavy focus on the Mechanical aliens thus they will have heavily invested in digital sensors which do jack-shit against us.

Oh yes. Just compare Jack from the first threads and Jack from this thread. Warriors went from serious threats to regular mooks and Infiltrators are barely considered at all. And now we're becoming something more (or less) than bodysnatcher.

As for the course of action, I agree that we should get ready to move out and tell the Wise about small army preparing to siege the city. Also, now that Cath and Daisy calmed down, we can ask them why we are so repulsive to them. What *exactly* they saw in us?

Cath wasn't really freaked out was she? She just couldn't see us.

ANyway, what I REALLY want is to have an encounter with the Fools again, preferably where we track them down while they have no idea.
What I want is some scene which plays like this: Megan (or what was that bitches name) comes home to rest, goes to her bedroom/livingroom and turns the light on, where she sees us sitting in the armchair waiting for her. When she sees us, we calmly say to her "Jack is dead". And then we slowly choke her to death.

I think this would be cool (the part where we tell her that Jack is dead) and I have been thinking of doing this since we have encountered the Fools. Since we have fooled her and everyone into believe that we have human mind this would be mindblowing for them before we kill them.

Also, a quick service announcement or two.

Mutations from this point on will replace upgrades, so you will be able to get the other three, along a number of other ones.

On the matter of Hunters, they do not have mutations, that is something unique to you as far as you know. They do have every possible normal upgrade from the get go, inculding a number of ones that haven't been an option to you.

Also, what do you guys about our chances with Hunters? If I am not mistaken, they are "complete" and thus have all our morphs plus those we don't have yet. The only advantage we have is Predator. Homever, we have Cath and Daisy on our side. Still, our chances aren't high, especially against three of them.
On the second hand, absorbing one would strenghten us considerably... or doom us. Anne Grey turned on humans after absorbing Hunter. We don't know if the same won't happen to us. Still, I think it's worth the risk.

I am pretty mad that the Fools turned on us after all the effort I made into collecting all those advanced weapons that the Wise had.
I was planning for our character to have powerful weapons too in addition to all of his close range combat capabilities. That way he would have an edge over all other enemies.
Normal human weapons don't cut it but the alien hybrids were perfect.
I bet that asshole doctor used them to make his super-robot.

Also, consider that with Perfect Predator and myriad other skills we have, we can become completely invisible to bodysnatchers too.

    >>15766847
Another thing that I have forgotten to add.
I was the one who chose and rolled high for all the mental traits like
    >- enhanced senses, capable of switching to different spectrums (infravision, ultrasound, noise filtering, etc.)
    >- fiber-optic nervous system, allowing you to ignore pain to some extent, and speeding up your reflexes by orders of magnitude

I cannot say that you don't take those into the consideration during the fights and everything but from what we read it seems that they are hardly ever used.
Perhaps I am wrong and all of our actions have been greatly amplified and in fact we are getting bonus modifiers, but the fact stands that those things get hardly mentioned during the updates. Perhaps the enemies we are fighting are so strong that this evens out...... I just feel that I had wasted the upgrades back then on things that are hardly mentioned and (seemingly) used.

Fiberoptic is taken into account, hence why you can take out multiple enemies in a few second. If you recall, nothing beyond sneak attacks hit you since. The senses are underused somewhat though, so I'll take care to include them more.

I have to ask though. How much mobility would we have lost if we took Juggernaut? Because that was my favorite mutation out of the whole bunch.

    >I like how we are a party of weird and completely unique people

Armoured Juggernaut would mean somewhat slower running and doging, much worse jumping, and no flying.
Normal armour could be used, it doesn't overwrite it completely, it's an option.

Turning things on and off might be possible after purchasing some other mutations, if you can turn them on and off, Protean Nature would allow almost instant, free switching.

Kellery seems lost in thought, considering her options. "I could possibly transmit the information to them, coded of course, but I'd like to ask you to consider working with them. The cyborgs keep tabs on large groups of bodysnatchers, and vica versa, so they'll move in force as well. The Wise do not have the forces to cleanly settle a conflict on that scale. The city would be devastated."

She lights a cigarette, a nervous habit. "Not to mention that you and Miss Abbey are something we don't understand completely. With the proper equipment, we could determine any number of things that could prevent more nasty surprises. Your newfound ability, for example, is not something that the Wise have encountered so far. At least not as far as I know."

And I still think we should ally with them. That's true, it's very risky, there are so many ways it can bite us in the ass later that I can't even begin to count them, but we need their help. Without them the best we can do is absorbing bodysnatchers in hopes of discovering location of the Queen or chasing the Fools, who can be anywhere.

After a few seconds, you can discern the slight buzzing of Wise aircraft in the distance, and you look around, switching light-sprectrums, hoping to find something. Eventually, you manage to find one that helps, and see about a dozen or so cloacked VTOL crafts heading your way, in a defensive ring aroun a similarly cloaked troop-transport chopper.

You wait, stomach rolled up into a tight ball by tension, and steady yourself by getting every morph that isn't outwardly visible ready. The VTOLs arrive in half a minute, and spread out in the sky while the chopper lands, de-cloaking only when it lands. Dust flies around from the wind it's rotors make, and a man jumps out, surrounded by Canes Belli, apparently ready for trouble, the hybrid weaponry they wounded you with standard issue for all of them.

The man walks closer, holding out a hand for a handshake. "Hey, you must be Jack. I can call you Jack, right? I'm Richard van Rohe, I'll be your liasion to the Wise." The young man, barely more than twenty years old, has a charming, open smile, and his eyes shine with excitement.

The door shuts close behind you, and the largest screen comes to life, displaying a symbol, six crowns in a circle around a large eye, all stylised, the crwons on the left black, on the right white, the eye in the middle grey.

The screen zooms in to one of the black crowns, it's image completely filling it. "Mister Winters. Sadly, I can't see you, but at least we're even then, yes?"

"This is just like something out of that Evangelion anime. I hope you're not letting Hideaki Anno's ideas about what a singularity should look like influence you too much. That was a deeply weird cartoon."

Going to have to agree with this. Then again I fully expected something like this.

He hmms and haas for a few seconds, then say "You'll have to excuse me, I am not quite up to date with popular culture to understand that. The singularity, well, we'll have to talk about that at a different time."

    >>15772300
The voice, seemingly coming out of nowhere, continues, distorted so as to not be recognisable. "Unfortunately, only I am unoccupied by "greater matters"," he pronounces it with a little venom, clearly taking umbrage at something, "but we have recieved, and have agreed to your terms. You and your companions will not be limited in movement by our forces in any way, the girl, the hybrid, will remain in your and Professor Kellery's care. We are somewhat dissapointed that you refused to partake in a few tests, but we will honour your wishes. We hope you will change your mind, in due time, of course."

The voice takes on a hard edge. "On to business, yes? We must ask of you something. The incoming alien forces are massive, and I fear that confronting them in an urban area will be disastrous. I would like you to aid is by taking out key targets, the Overseers, and the Hunter. With them gone, our conventional troops should be capable of taking care of the rest."

Sounds reasonable. Sitting on our ass doing nothing, while the Wise are getting slaughtered isn't what I would call fair deal. It's expected that they want our help. Besides, we wanted to absorb the Hunter anyway, and the Overseers too may be useful, though we can't really be sure after that incident with the last one.
    So yeah, we agree.

"Could we be able to divert the troops into non-urban areas to lessen the collateral damage and information leaks?"

Yeah, that is what Iwas planning too. To go after the big targets.

Ask them to supply you with several live bodysnatcher specimens so that we can upgrade and have better chance against the army.

[gah, I can't take it anymore. Need to sleep, it is 4 am not ... I've been feeling sleepy since 20pm. Keep the thread going guys.

We'll be getting a chance to do that by killing the targets they're going to give us.

Cant you move me and my friends to a more remote location? Surely they'd follow and that'd atleast keep the city from being destroyed in the fighting.

"Hmm, I will ask about it, see what our experts say. I field battle would improve the odds, but I cannot say anything for certain, there are factors I am unaware of."

After clearing it's throat, the voice asks "Do you have anything else to add, Mister Winters? Other pressing issues, questions you were intending to ask? I will answer them to the best of my abilities, though I am on a tight schedule, I only have a minute or so to conclude our conversation. I am dreadfully sorry, but I do have a number of other responsibilities."

"Are there other people like Daisy and me being studied elsewhere? This isn't the time for a discussion about it, but if there are, plan on us having a good long talk about it. The conditions I found Daisy in were not very humane."

Let's not push it too much, not to mention this isn't really in our character. We helped Daisy cause she was a little kid and we were in a position to, we're not a saint crusading for a better world, we're just a guy trying to survive.

"Weaponry, of course, Director Fadil will give you acces to our armory. You should find something that can help you there. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have duties to attend to. Until next time, Mister Winters." You turn around, and head for the door, the screen zooming out to the whole Wise symbol.

"Until next time." There is something strange about the voice, something... hungry, and you are glad to leave the surgically white room.
