84 KB The Game of Evolution ComfyCushion !!ESjA665aBZB 07/19/11(Tue)01:05 No.15630559
    Here's the idea, fa/tg/uys.

You are deciding the fate of a population of animals as it traverses the eons, mutating, moving, and adapting to selective pressures in an attempt to continue its own unique branch of the tree of life.

You'll start off with a very basic animal, which I will draw. As the game progresses, I will post a selective pressure, i.e. climate change, influx of predators and the like, and you'll roll a d20 and suggest an adaptation (claws, armor, etc) or behavior (changing environment, diet, etc.) that could help your species survive. Depending on how you roll, your population will grow or shrink, and the adaptation you suggested will be incorporated into the population.

I will draw pictures of the species as it changes and evolves based on your decisions and rolls.

    So, wanna play?

First, let's see what kind of creature we begin as. Roll 2d2 to figure out our body plan.

Again, this roll is not a vote. I have a list of adaptations here, and you're rolling to see which one you get. Once the game proper gets underway, you'll be suggesting adaptations.

Remember, though. Evolution is a gradual process. If we haven't developed the proper basic adaptations necessary to develop sapience, we won;t develop it. No matter how well you roll.

A stocky species, we are built to weather the harsher climate of our mountainous home. Though small, we are tenacious, and capable of subsisting on almost any food source available in the craggy river valleys. Covered in spines, we make a difficult mouthful for any predator that might take a chance on gobbling us up. This same spikeyness, unfortunately, limits our capacity to move swiftly, and hinders the absorbing of water through our skins, crucial due to the primitive nature of our lungs. Thus we spend much of our time in or near the water.

Recent climate shifts have caused the mountain temperatures to drop. Much of our population is hard pressed to counter this, dependent as we are on the rivers that have begun to freeze over. Our population has begun to drop.

    How do we survive this?

Lacking any external means of insulation, certain sections of the population have begun to store more fat in their subdermal tissues. This has effectively allowed us to survive the harsh cold that has swept into our habitat.

However, maintaining this layer of fat is taxing out ability to forage for food. The scrub grains and lichens we forage on are poor in nutrients, but abundant, and we have become to slow to subsist mainly on the few insects and fish that live this high in the mountains. Our population has stablized.

While we are not smart enough to farm, and our cells are in no way equipped to use photosynthesis, we have developed a stretchy tongue with a sticky end, and we have adopted an ambush method of attack. The increased protein in our diet has increased our brain power slightly. Our population is growing.

With more of the region populated by our species, large predatory fish have been moving upstream to feed on us and our eggs. These fish have armored heads and mouths, making our spines less effective against their onslaught.

    How will we survive this?

Mucus glands near the base of our tails have modified to produce a powerful toxin, which we rub on our spines and skin. Most of the armored fish species have given up on eating us. Our population is growing.

With our predators thoroughly thwarted, our population has grown enormous. Our sheer numbers have not only begun to deplete the food sources available in the mountain valleys, but oxygen levels in the rivers and streams have become too low for our primitive respiratory systems to handle.

    How will we survive this?

We have developed special vents on our flanks linked directly to an improved lung system. We can now spend more time out of the water, allowing us to escape predators and forage for new sources of food.

however, this increased range has allowed us to overpopulate the over-taxed habitat. There simply isn't enough food up here for all of us, and aerial predators, adapted to handle our toxins, have begun to thin our numbers. Our population is in decline.

While some of the species remains in the mountains, their numbers brought into check by predators, some of the population has moved out of the mountains into the forest below. Our sandy grey skin, good at hiding us in the beds of our former river homes, is nothing but a liability on the forest floor. Our excess fat has become a burden. We become slimmer as a consequence. An emerging territorial behavior has ensured that not too many of us are in one place at any one time. Our population is stable.

Large floor dwellers have begun to prey upon us. Their leathery mouths and cast-iron stomachs are enough to make us very edible. The creatures rely on sight to catch us, and are confined to the forest floor, but they are definitely not the only predators in the woods.

we have evolved large sharp claws we use to climb up the sides of trees. We are safe from predators on the ground, and there are abundant insects in the middle section of the forest.

However, our old foes, a species of nocturnal aerial predators have begun picking us off of trees and have discovered how to wash us in the small streams and ponds around the forest, removing our defensive toxins. Our territorial attitude has reduced the number of offspring we produce every year. Our population is decreasing.

    How will we survive this?

Some sections of our population have grown longer spikes, but this has proven ineffective against the birds' scaley feet and long talons. However, other sections' spikes have broadened and turned mottled brown, allowing us to blend in with our surroundings. As a last ditch effort against predators, we are capable of firing toxins out of our glands at incoming threats. Our population is growing.

Another species of bird has begun feeding on our preferred food source of insects. They are smaller than us, but actively hunt and catch their prey on the wing, vastly out-competing our ambush techniques. There are abundant insects near the forest floor, out of the birds range, and there are also abundant food sources besides insects in the middle and upper sections.

    How will we survive this?

We have developed a primitive gliding membrane which allows us to travel swiftly from tree to tree. As well, we've gained an appetite for bird's eggs, as they are rich in protein, and easily accessible. Our population is stable

They birds we prey upon have become bigger and more aggressively protect their nests. Having become completely carnivorous, the drop in accessible prey is a major threat to our population's stability.

    How will we survive this?

NOTE: This next one will be the last one for the night for me. If someone would like to save this and we can catch up with it tomorrow, or maybe start a new one, I'm fine with that.
