A stocky species, we are built to weather the harsher climate of our mountainous home. Though small, we are tenacious, and capable of subsisting on almost any food source available in the craggy river valleys. Covered in spines, we make a difficult mouthful for any predator that might take a chance on gobbling us up. This same spikeyness, unfortunately, limits our capacity to move swiftly, and hinders the absorbing of water through our skins, crucial due to the primitive nature of our lungs. Thus we spend much of our time in or near the water.
Recent climate shifts have caused the mountain temperatures to drop. Much of our population is hard pressed to counter this, dependent as we are on the rivers that have begun to freeze over. Our population has begun to drop.
How do we survive this? |
