    LISTEN UP SCUM

Okay, I'm nowhere near back to... well, not 100%, I'm never that, but the even keel 70 to 80% that I like to operate at. But I promised I'd do my level best to do a Zeonquest on Sunday and I'm going to do me level best to do a goddamn Zeonquest episode on a freaking Sunday.

If I end up quitting early it's because I've had to stop to throw up somewhere. But whatever.

You are Commander David Lister, Mobile Suit pilot for the Principality of Zeon, and CO of the elite independant corps: the Nachtmaren Unit.

It is the Battle of Solomon.

Attacking from the direction of Luna II, Federation forces have staged a massive assault on the Zeonic Space Fortress of Solomon. Using combined arms tactics and Anti-Beam Chaff fields the enemy is besieging the base and the denfending Zeon forces, still wounded from the battle for Side 4.

After an engaging the enemy in the Pezun-Solomon debris zone, Zolomon Ringo lost his life. Despite this, you all pledged to carry on.

    The plan was thus:

Instead of rejoining with Solomon forces directly, just another face in the crowd, you opted to strike instead at the enemies center of gravity.
Or, to put it less metaphorically, their logistics train.

The enemy force outnumbers Solomon by at least 3 to one, the logistical requirements for such a fleet must be huge. By attacking these supply ships you hope to draw enemy forces away from the front to deal with your attacks, or even starve the enemy out completely, forcing them to withdraw.

Certainly, those ships are going to be operating in escorted convoys, most likely heavy enough to deter any normal raiding force.

You however, are Nachtmaren. Normal doesn't really describe any of you people.

THIS SOUND ABOUT WHAT WE AGREED LAST WEEK?

    What Aznable Issue?

In any case, the supply train is probably coming in from two directions, earth via surface to orbit transports, and from Luna II by way of Side 4. There are probably less earth-space convoys due to the fuel costs, however you doubt that Revil would gimp himself by not using the earths vast resources. So those convoys probably contain fat targets. However, attacking those convoys would require assaulting areas that are now firmly in Federation control: The Orbital Zones, and aside from the protective convoys, you'd also have to deal with any picket forces.
There would also be an element of pot luck, who knows when one of these convoys would be scheduled? They could be weekly for all you know.

The Luna II convoys are likely smaller, but more regular. With probably correspondingly smaller escorts.
    Probably.

If you wanted to hit both you'd have to directly attack the rear formations of the enemy fleet, possibly opening up a hornets nest that not even you can stop.

Then of course there's the fourth option that I haven't considered that no doubt one of you will come up with.

    >As to where the fuck we're going... where are we least likely to encounter magical feddie tarps?

That's... somewhat hard to say, I would imagine directly attacking the rear of the main fleet in the hopes of snagging both of the possible convoy routes (and possibly taking out some needed support ships as well) would have the highest risks associated with it.

I mean, think about it, were elite aces, how often were WE put on convoy duty?

We should hit the supply shipments from Luna II/Side 4. The convoys might be smaller, but the more frequent convoys will also be carrying the most critically needed supplies due to their frequency and ability to change a shipment to more critical supplies.

Is there any way we can hit the transports from Luna II/Side 4 by swinging through the path that transports from Earth are taking, but not hitting the orbital zones?

Yes, but the odds of you actually managing to nab a transport in this way is pretty low.

Also, do you want to go to Side 4, or do you want to avoid it? It'll probably have a garrison of some kind in place.

Well, the Minovsky density of the whole region is fairly high, if the levels of density from the battle a few days ago is anything to go by it should be quite high across the whole area.

I was actually thinking it might be possible to remove the escort in a blitzkrieg attack, then offer the supply ships a chance to surrender and abandon ship.

of course, we tell them who we are and that if any of them attempt to cheat our kind offer by scuttling or attempting to self-destruct, there will be no survivors.

Perhaps say if the offer is refused or subverted, the captain is dooming all other transports and supply ships to complete destruction as well?

We might be able to snag some intact supplies/parts/GMs and a workable supply ship if we can pull it off.

Well, if we're going to be operating for any extended period of time we'll need a "base" to work from or hide in, right?

Slap a skeleton crew on it and hide the transport in a debris field or something. We can use it as a fallback position or just a supply depot.

At the very least, we might be able to put together a few "spare parts" suits to use as backups in the event some of ours need extended repairs.

    Okay then.

Observing the map you set up a route that will most likely avoide the enemy patrols around Solomon and enable you to swing around to their rear.
You tell Anita to call you if the OH encounters anything.

You then decide to check up on the readiness of the rest of the unit. Ookawara reports that the suits will be repaired and ready in about two to three hours. You can see that all of the major damage has already been dealt with.
You tell him that you might be about to undergo extended operations without resupply, and ask him what's the situation like for spare parts and ammo.

"Well, we pretty much took on all we could carry from the Transport yesterday, so were about as good as we'll ever be. Even if were going out to combat every day, we should be able to last a good 6 to 7 day's or so. Hell, we've got so many UMP parts I could probably build a whole new Mobile Suit from them."

You then go to check on Nell. You find that she has been moved back to her room. You decide to see how everything is going. You find a pair of armed guards at the door.
After being let inside you find one of the handlers greets you. They're taking it in turns to keep Nell under constant observation.

"After yesterday, we don't want to take any chances. We're not really sure about keeping her on active combat duty roster anymore. It's clearly beginning to take it's toll..."

"Look. The whole reason she joined the combat roster was so that she could do what she did yesterday. If she wan't to keep piloting, then I say we keep her on. ESPECIALLY now that were going on a raiding mission behind enemy lines."

The handler throws his hands in the air, and welcomes you to ask her.

The journey to reach the rear of the area takes about two hours. Afterwards you patrol a safe zone between Side 4 and the suspected fleet zone in an optimised pattern.

In the distance, your optics occaisionaly pick up flashes of a distant battle from Solomon. If anything, the battle is still continuing.

After just under a further 4 hours, Anita signals you whilst you were writing a few more chapters of your various works. It feels like a ages since you were able to write stuff down. This war is stretching out your perceptions of time in all kinds of ways.

"Sir, we've got a convoy on the scopes, but, we've got a situation. Could you come to the bridge please?"

You put your notes away and head up. Once there you quickly spot the incoming convoy, it appears to be three ships supported by 4 federation warships. You can just about make out Mobile Suits and Balls.

"Sir. We've detected an enemy convoy. But, whilst two of the ships are standard Federation Columbus Transports, we've got a problem here." Anita points at the rearmost ship, a larger vessel mounting row upon row of cargo containers arranged upon it.
    You quickly see the problem.

"The Jupiter Energy Fleet." You sum.

    "Just so" Mauser states.

This poses a problem, whilst the other ships are valid targets of opportunity, the Jupitris vessel belongs to the neutral Jupiter Energy Fleet that supplies the both of you with precious Helium 3 fuel. Striking against one could result in the Energy Fleet picking sides.
Nevertheless, this vessel probably represents a large consignment of the Federations fuel for their fleet.

Okay, so if we go on an all out attack, fuel may become a problem for Zeon, assuming our superiors don't just label us as a rogue element.
OR we can try not to engage the fuel ship, but attack the rest, giving the Feds fuel, but still taking away other supplies. Assuming stray fire doesn't damage the Fuel ship.
OR we can just bugger off and not risk getting on the bad side of the Jupiter Energy Fleet.

I vote for attacking the Federation parts but not the Fuel ship, if that's possible. Since they're a neutral target, can we send them a message saying that they're not a target and they should just speed along?
    >> Anonymous 06/19/11(Sun)17:04 No.15320455
    >>15320343

Is the Jupiter fleet allowed to use their ships to DIRECTLY deliver fuel to COMBAT ships? Surely there is something in their neutrality that forces them to deliver to a base or city and not directly to WARSHIPS?

also, can we send a laser-com to the two Jupiter fleet vessels but not the Feddie ships?

If we can laser-com the two Jupiter Fleet vessels:

"Attention ships of the Jupiter Energy Fleet. Cease your advance immediately and transmit your current destination and cargo manifest. If you fail to comply with this request I can only assume that you are moving to directly resupply an attacking Federation Fleet, violating your groups neutrality and making you a valid target of war. I repeat, cease your advance immediately or you will be judged in violation of your Fleet's neutrality and fired upon."

If the ships do not cease their advance and transmit their ID codes, they are directly contributing to the enemy's war effort, and violating their neutrality.

Either way, sink the Feddie ships and deal with the Jupiter ships last. Unless they launch mobile suits, in which case they are clearly Feddie False-flaggers!

It's just ONE Jupiter Energy Fleet vessel, the other two are Federation transports.

    >>15320455

It IS unusual, simply because the Jupiter fleet have repeatedly stated that they don't want to take sides. You can only assume some sort of legal strongarming is going on. Anita's best guess is that they probably intercepted the ship as it was making it's normal run, and then basically "suggested" that it would be quicker and easier for them to deliver the fuel to the fleet directly.

It's not quite illeagal or anything, but it is somewhat pushing the letter of the agreements. It's not something the Jupiter fleet would likely stand for over a continued period, but a few isolated incidents will probably be nothing a good diplomatic corps couldn't smooth over.

Alternatively, maybe the Jupiter energy fleet are just dicking with us.

Technically speaking the Jupiter Energy Fleets "Neutrality" is basically an up front desire to supply BOTH of your militaries with much needed Helium 3 isotope for a single price which they set themself.

It's well within their rights to supply military ships directly, although they don't usually because military ships do military things that could end up in accidentially losing an entire ship. Standard procedure is to deliver straight to fuel depots across the Earth Sphere.

Come to think of it, the fact that they would even try this means that some sort of fuel depot ship or ships must be present in the Federation Fleet.

You outline the plan to the rest of the team. You don't expect the Jupitris to make any hostile moves, and they're not to risk damaging it if possible.

"Remember, don't let the enemy GM's take advantage of that, get youself into good firing angles to take them out, and if you can't do that for whatever reason, get close and engage in close combat. With a bit of luck, we might be able to get this ship to make it's delivery to the other team."

In any case, you attack from the direction of the sun, evading detection until late. By which point you've already launched. Your Nacht-Zaku bisects one GM with your Beam Saber, you dodge the blasts of another and return fire with your wrist mounted beam guns. Your target loses an arm, shoulder and head in the initial hit and moments later explodes.

Bullets fill the area as Elaine begins a long rang supression attack. You see the Salamis cruiser nearest to her weather a storm of fire, sending savage return strikes back, unfortunately ignoring Jolyne until it's too late, the flare of her Beam Cannon first hits the bridge and two more precision shots hit the engine block in quick succession. The rear of the ship explodes.

You turn your attentions to a trio of balls, punishing them for their close formation by spearing all of them with a single three-shot burst from your old Beam Carbine. You push forward to where Option and Rance are already engaging the several GM's who are defending the supply ships.
Before they can spot you, you lash one with your heat rod, electical discharge momentarily stuns it, and pulling hard you swing the disabled mobile suit like flail into another one. The heavy impact shakes arms and legs loose. The two spiral off, heavily damaged into space.

You kick a Ball that got too close away and fire a trio of shots into the supply ship. It doesn't explode, you guess it's not carrying volatiles like the other one. Your shots are clearly harming it though.
Behind you Rance and Option are following your lead, Rance stops to fire several bazooka rounds at the transport whilst Option covers him by engaging nearby enemies in close combat.
He disables an enemy GM's Beam pistol with a burst of his shield sabots and then slices it clean in half with a stroke from his beam saber. You follow his lead by engaging a second GM. You ram it with your shield, staggering it, your first kick has the extra bite of the concealed heat blades, and neatly takes off his gun arm like deboning a chicken.
You retract the blade and then kick the GM away from you. Bullets fire harmlessly from his head-vulcans and you finish it off with a couple of shots with your wrist gun.

You see the last supply ship is aflame, escape boats are launching from it as it continues to slowly break apart. Given that this is a primary trade route, odds are they'll be picked up by the end of the day at the latest.

In the distance you see Elaine savage a second Cruiser with her gatling literally scouring every turret, missile pod and most of the bridge off the side of it. The ship begins to list away as it's fire becomes more sporadic and unco-ordinated. It's companion just explodes as Elaine finally manages to find that sweet spot in the engineering block that takes out the entire ship.

If no escorts: are supply ships left?
If Yes: offer them a chance to abandon ship. they have 30 seconds to respond or they die.
If No: Status of Jupiter ship?

You sense the passage of several Bits around your position, from the looks of things, they allowed Nell to actually sortie in the end.

The number of bits is lower than usual, of the starting thirty, they're now down to just 11. The first strike from these small weapons neatly slices off the fore beam turret, but also alerts the enemy to their presence. Flak begins to fill the air, and the Bits nimbly dance between the showers of conventional bullets, their attacks cutting down turret after turret. A trio begin sending strikes to the engine block, and whilst it doesn't explode, the engines splutter and die. From this distance you are aware of the bridge being hit several times as well, and within scant minutes you can see additional lifepods spiral away from the Salamis cruiser, which now looks more like swiss cheese than anything else.

You check the surrounding situation. It seems that the fighting is now pretty much coming to a close. You open a channel to Anita to ask for a sit-rep.

"We've got no additional enemies on any of our scopes commander. Also, Mauser had been talking to the Captain of the Jupiter fleet. We think we've managed to pursuade him to redivert his drop to Grenada's silos."

"You think he can be trusted?" You ask.

"Well, I wouldn't trust him as far as I could throw him generally, but he'd be the first Jupiter Energy Fleet captain to turn down the prospect of getting paid twice for the same job in history if he tried to pull anything now. Still, if you want sir, we probably could escort him back to Pezun if you want..."

    "Actually Anita..." you tell her.
    "We may have bigger problems..."

If only the Jupiter ship is left, we should demand their destination and current cargo.

Basically, I feel we should inform them that we see their action of heading to resupply a fleet engaged in an offensive action as a violation of their neutrality. As such, they have made their cargo and ship a direct part of the enemy supply chain, and they are to forfeit their cargo to space immediately. They have 5 minutes before we begin to remove it for them.

Even if they are unloading their helium 3 to a feddie tanker, they are DIRECTLY supplying an offensive fleet. Their ship is only neutral if it has ZERO cargo.

The fighting here was ferocious. The fourth and outermost defensive line had been typified of small tentative skirmishes. Like a pair of boxers testing each others strengths. The third line however had been different. The federation forces had rushed the walls of the Zeonic static defences with a concentrated attack on a perceived weakspot. To an extent this was correct, the area was positioned in such a way as to prove difficult for other emplacements to give supporting fire, and it did lack the same amount of defensive satellites, so it probably did present the best target to overrun and set up as a beach head for assaulting the second defensive line.
However, the lack of guns surrounding this one particular point, specifically, Defence Asteroid 113, was not without reason. As the reason why it lacks gun emplacements, is because it lacks space to hold ammo for a larger compliment of guns.
The reason it lacks ammo space is because it is instead a rapid deployment point for Mobile Suits, and there are, unbeknownst to the Federal forces, roughly an entire mixed battalion stationed within the asteroid. Some of it hastily constructed out of UMP components admittedly.
And it's position is bad for mutual support, but it's PERFECT for receiving reinforcements from Solomon.

The Zeonic MS counterattack from 113 occurred just as the enemy forces managed to reach the guns through the still heavy bombardment and the detirmined picket forces. Massive bay doors vomited forth Gyans with experienced pilots backed up by Zaku Kai troops directly into a close range assault with an already bloodied enemy. The suprise attack was highly effective, and the enemy spearhead took a heavy mauling an attempted to retreat to the fire envelope of it's supporting ships. Then Zudah and Rick-Dom II's launched to pursue them, the high speed Mobile Suits dogged their retreat, inflicting yet more casualties then engaged the enemy ships. The mass of defensive fire took it's toll, leading to some casualties of the pursuit element, but they gave as good as they got before pulling out.

The Fedaration would attempt to breach Asteroid 113 three more times after this. On the third try, almost two day's later, they would succeed.

It was after the enemy had occupied the Asteroid 113 and turned it into a bulwark of it's own from which to attack Solomon that Admiral Dozle decided to take to the field.

As the enemy ships moved up, supported by the now Friendly guns of 113, and began to advance forwards to aid the assault of the 2nd line, Admiral Dozle stood there, atop one of the four massive converted battlestation/asteroids.
His Big Zol loomed like the guardian beasts of old, between the federation and Solomon, and to his left was the strange one legged form of the Gromlin, and to his right, dwarfed considerably by the other two was the white Gyan High Mobility model of Shin Matsunaga.

Behind them was the crack 1st Zeonic Company, elite veteran soliders bloodied with countless battles over this last year, and the own remaining battlefleet, in close support of Solomons own guns now.

Dozle, as was his way, led the charge. His opening shot from his Mobile Armours Megaparticle cannon surged through the previously thought impenetrable cloud of Anti-Beam chaff. The beam cleaved three salamis cruisers in a single pass, splitting them open like ripe fruit.

It was then that he proclaimed on an open channel to all who would listen:

"ONCE THE BIG ZOL IS MASS PRODUCED...!"

This is a good sentiment, but I doubt anything related to Zolomon could ever truly be mass produced. At best you could manage one authentic Big Zol and a number of far less spirited copies, lacking the divine flame of the original.

Plus, I'm not sure how many we can afford to build without bankrupting Zeon. Big Zol's strike me as being rather expensive to build and operate.

I tried mass producing the Big Zam in Gihren's Greed once (a Delaz Fleet playthrough if I remember rightly) they're actually much better in space than they are in earth, and they're damn good for setting up beachheads on maps with lot's of enemies. At most you'll have maybe 5 or 6 of them at any one time, and they definately need to be backed up by mixed MS forces.

They're crowning moment of glory came in the final battle against the Titans in Gryps, where I had the six of them set up a firing line formation, devestate massive lines of enemies, then pivot about like some kind of coordinated ballet and take out everything to their left as well.

All of this whilst Gato pimped about in the Neue Ziel killing Hambrabi's backed up by Mashymere, whilst Chara Soon and Haman took on Paptimus Scirrocco and Jerid.
    Good times.

We'll come up with a plan to smash the mirrors or something....

Man, this is the point where Arty or other anons make plans for next week, but I've got nothing besides blitz the Solar System and break off when we do enough damage. But that's pretty much a suicide mission.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)00:05 No.15323560
Alright, I'm pleasantly surprised that things went mostly according to plan.
I knew that the Solar System was eventually going to come online, but it's still quite disheartening to find out that it is now a fully operational superweapon.

Two basic ideas are 1: attack the central computer which coordinates all of the mirrors. Without coordination, the system is rendered useless. 2: Attach the control system from one of Nell's bits to a series of rocket boosters welded to a Zaku torso. We set the Zaku's reactor to critical overload to destroy a massive section of the Solar System mirror array, rendering it unable to focus enough light to be effective.
Of course, this all assumes that we can find it, and punch through whatever defense force that Revil has stationed to keep the Solar System safe.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)01:05 No.15324078
Damn. I was hoping we'd be able to intercept the solar system as it was being shipped to the battlefield.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)03:10 No.15325130
We could also try using AB Chaff torpedoes to drop the effectiveness of the Solar System if it's preparing to fire, to give us more time to take it out.

But again, we've got to find it first. Not too sure on that front: maybe use David's Newtype powers to locate it? It won't take orders from anyone except Archimedes, but it we may be able to get it to reveal its location.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)09:55 No.15327367
Among others, here's a bad (will probably kill us) plan that actually may work for when we find the Solar System: Use David's power at full and take control of every Federation weapon to force them to fire upon the Solar System and each other.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)12:10 No.15328541
I don't think AB chaff will work on the solar system. I don't know exactly what AB chaff does but the SS works on a totally different concept than beam weapons.

However there is a control ship. The SS may not take orders from us but the control ship should. Swing a couple turrets around to target the bridge and we should at least buy a few minutes.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)12:14 No.15328577
    >>15327367
    Or just...

control the Solar System in the first place?

I mean, it's just one superweapon. Hell, if you want to just disable it just get it to commit suicide by shooting itself. Unlock a couple of safeties, cook off its own command center or something like that - or better yet flood it with radiation so you can capture it intact.
    >> Anonymous 06/20/11(Mon)12:32 No.15328745
    >>15328577
The Solar System is specifically immune to David's power. See here >>15320957

    >>15328541
AB chaff still has light dispersion properties, and could still interfere with the Solar System's targeting.

A good idea but the thing is too big to block enough of it with a high enough density chaff.

    >1: attack the central computer which coordinates all of the mirrors. Without coordination, the system is rendered useless.
This would be ideal [META]but as we saw in 0083 it took tens of minutes for other Federation ships to regain control of the system. Its effectiveness would be reduced (I HOPE) but remember the target is a space fortress; it isnt going anywhere and they can spend all day repositioning mirrors to hit it.[/META]

    >Cave Johnson: I like your Grit
And we do have those extra UMP parts so it's not like we couldnt just assemble a reactor. Explosions arent so great in space though as they radiate their energy in every direction. Luckily there was an idea discussed in the aftermath of Side 4 involving the use of the OH's Minovsky Craft system as a beam weapon using a detonating Suit reactor.

Could we modify the Zaku reactor, by building a casing around it that would turn it from a regular thermonuclear explosion in space into a macgyvered fragmentation bomb?
We need to knock out the panels of the Solar System, so creating an artificial meteor storm might fit the bill.

We assemble some of a couple types of projectiles. The first type as you suggested and a second type as just a rocket or engine with large kinetic penetrator.
We launch them at the mirror from the flank so that they have a higher chance of striking more mirrors.
As a side note I would like to say that Kinetic kill missiles in Sword of the Stars are both awesome and broken at the same time. Fuckers knock my targets so far out of range my cutting beams cant do jack shit.
