The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you. After spending two weeks on vacation, the nine students of Professor Xavier's class have returned to the Mansion, but they aren't alone! Seven new faces have joined their class for the summer - teenage mutants from Ms. Frost's Massachusetts Academy!

"You *can't* be serious," the red-haired girl says, casting a dismissive eye around the Mansion's game room. "This is what you people do for fun?"

"Don't be too hard on them, Amy," the big brown-haired young man next to her says, crossing his arms over his wide chest. "You know how negligent their teachers are. Is it any surprise that they don't know how to have fun either?"

"OK, tough guy, I've had about enough out of you!" Ricardo shouts heatedly, finally being pushed to the breaking point by the new students' constant heckling. "Shut your mouth, or I'm going to shut it for you!"

"Struck a nerve, huh?" the bigger student asks, standing nearly a full head above Ricardo. "Any time you want to settle this, I'm ready," he says, spreading his arms out innocently.

"Oh, yeah? How about right n-" Ricardo says, suddenly swinging a punch at the other student - but just as he does a hand snaps out and grabs his fist!

As he looks up, caught off-guard, you see that one of the female students has transformed herself into a statue-like being made of solid rock!

"Wrong move, hotshot," she says, grinning and holding back his fist easily. "Blake might be the biggest, but I'm the one who's going to make you eat that attitude."

"Yeah, teach him a lesson, Eliza!" one of the other female students shouts. As you look around between the two groups of students, now on the verge of a major brawl, you see the young man who seems to be the leader of this group smiling to himself as he watches from the fringe.

"I'm going to enjoy making y-" the stone-like girl says, squeezing Ricardo's fist for a moment before she pauses, motionless, along with all the other Academy students.

"Wow, Aino, you're getting pretty good with the whole accuracy thing," Clarissa says, looking around at the frozen faces of the seven new classmates. "I remember when you first came here, you could barely use your power at all without getting tired!"

"So what are we gonna do with these jerks?" Sam asks, pointing a thumb over her back at the others as Ricardo finally manages to pull his hand free of Amy's rocky time-stuck hand.

"We could cover them in toilet paper?" Luke and Mary Ann suggest in unison. "What?" they ask as the others give them a look. "We don't know what else to do! We're the goody two-shoes in this group, remember?"

"I thought that was Aino," Noah smiles. "Or Megan."

"What about me?" Sam asks him sweetly.

    "You're definitely not a goody two-shoes. More like a brown-noser," Megan laughs.

"So... two shoes is bad?" Atlas asks, still trying to puzzle out the meaning of the phrase. "Doesn't everyone in this era wear two shoes at a time?"

"It's - you know what, never mind," Clarissa says. "I'll explain it later. Omni, can you let the Professor know about this?"

    "Sure," they say in unison.

"Ladies and gentlemen, I am very disappointed in you," Ms. Frost says flatly to the Academy students as she and the Professor survey the sixteen of you. "We have been invited here as guests on Professor Xavier's charity, and this is how you repay his hospitality?"

"Ms. Frost, it wasn't our fault!" the dusky-skinned girl next to Blake protests. "Eliza was just protecting Blake!"

"I *hardly* think Blake needs protecting, Rosa," Ms. Frost tells her with just a hint of annoyance in her voice. "In fact... James, dear, why don't you explain what happened?"

"Yes, Ms. Frost," the one you've pegged as the leader says innocently. "We were in here looking at their game room, and Amy said she didn't care for the way it looked. When Blake told her not to be concerned with it, that one tried to punch him-" he says, gesturing at Ricardo as he seethes with anger. "Then Eliza stopped him from hitting Blake, and the next thing we knew their class was all outside the room."

"That's not-" Noah starts to protest, before the Professor raises his hand to cut him off.

"Is this true, Aino?" he asks you, looking up from his hoverchair sternly.

"See that you don't," she responds. "I won't have you making a disturbance every time someone says a cross word to you."

"Ricardo, when have you ever felt it was appropriate to strike another student here?" the Professor asks him. "I-"

"Now, Charles," Ms. Frost says, laying a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sure that my students are simply over-tired from the long drive down here. And I suspect your students are not quite comfortable having new faces in their school. Why don't we just put this behind us and get on with things? It's much too lovely a day for bickering."

"Perhaps you're right, Emma," Professor Xavier agrees at last. "I suppose there must be a sounding-out process when so many young people are condensed into one space."

"All right, students. Time for class."

"You, however, handled it exactly as I would have expected you to. It is clear to me why your peers look to you for guidance."

A moment after the Professor scans the memories that you present him, he shakes his head. "Regardless of what was said, Ricardo should not have been so quick to choose the path of violence."

"Well, here you all are. And here I am, as well!" Dr. McCoy laughs as he stands outside of the Mansion's main laboratory, resplendant in his blue fur and white lab coat. "Greetings, salutations new friends, I hope this balmy New York weather isn't a bother for your Massachusetts sensibilities!" he smiles. "Hello, Caleb, welcome back! Hello, Aino, welcome, welcome!" he says as you enter.

"Is he always going to be like this?" one of the other Academy boys hisses to James as they walk into the lab.

Forty minutes later, the students all stand around in a cluster, you and your classmates on one side, the Academy students on the other, as Dr. McCoy examines the concoctions you've brewed up. First he holds up yours, just one of the nine equally-perfect mixes your side created. "Mm-hmm, looks nice, crystal formation looks perfect."

"Nice going, Alan," Blake chides the swarthy dark-haired boy in the front of the group.

    "Shut up, Blake," he responds.

"Enough." James says crossly, and the two close their mouths.

and buff out some of the dings and scratches on our Penguinel-Mk2 power armor.

As for these upstarts, ignore them, for the most part. We're Tachyon, soon to be Doctor Tachyon. Have any of them interned with the Fantastic Four? Fought Magneto and won? Saved the Multiverse from chronopocalyptic collapse? We carry ourselves with quiet dignity. If they want to start another confrontation, we freeze them, dump ice water down their pants, and let them cool off.

"Involuntary? No, they all have control over their powers. I hope the same can be said about you," James says, sitting down and lifting his fork.

"I don't need any help, thank you," Alan says, testing his own food. "Maybe if you wanted to help introduce me to your friend-"

    "Not happening!" Sam interrupts.

"Oh hey, this is where the party's at," Noah says as he and Caleb walk in. "You're James and Rosa, right?" he asks them.

"And this is Alan and Carson," James says, introducing the other two.

"Wow, you don't wait around, do you?" Alan asks a minute later when you broach the subject of everyone's shared mutant heritage. "Well, you already saw what I could do," he smirks, sinking down under the table toward Sam. As she shrieks and jumps back in her chair, he reemerges from behind the thick drapes across the room. "I can pass from one shadow to another. That's why they call me Darkstep."

"Alan does enjoy showing off his ability," James agrees, taking a sip of water. "But I'm afraid my leadership role is purely academic. Whether or not they wish to discuss their natures with you is not a decision for me. However, *I* will gladly demonstrate my ability," he says with a slight smile.

A moment later you feel a buzzing in the center of your mind, and you feel your body stand upright as you involuntarily turn around and begin walking around the room!

"They call me Pilot. I'm sure you can see why. "

"Hey, let her go!" Caleb shouts, dropping his plate as he grabs James by the shirtsleeve. But just as you're about to summon up the will to stop time around him, the buzzing in your mind suddenly drops away and you regain control of your body!

"Relax. See? She's smiling," he says, gesturing to you. "No hard feelings?"

"You scuzzy-" Sam starts to say as she floats into the air, red-faced, before you cut her off. "What do you mean? Come on, Aino, don't tell me you're gonna put up with that!" she asks you heatedly, jabbing a finger in the direction of James.

"OK, calm down, everyone," Noah says, raising his hands. "Look, James. We have this thing here about not using powers to mess with each other. Especially with the, you know... mental stuff," he says, tapping his head.

"At least there are *some* rational people around here," James says as you round the table and approach them. "Aino, I apologize. He's right - it would seem that we do have different standards of appropriatness in regards to our powers."

"So... I understand you have a Danger Room here," he says, taking another sip.

Twenty minutes, a few spates of laughter and several awkward moments later, James rises and the other two follow him out. "See you later."

"All right girls, this is a simple exercise. At the top of the room is a target, you simply need to touch it." As the Professor says this, a small yellow square materializes, suspended from the ceiling by a thin rod. With it, several silver rings ranging from hula-hoop sized to only two feet wide appear as well, floating in midair.

"Samantha, your task will be to maneuver through these rings as they light up. Aino, you will have to control the speed of these floating panels as they move back and forth. I am interested to see how well your ability to affect multiple objects has progressed."

As he gives the word, and you concentrate on the tachyon field surrounding the lowest panel, Sam flits up into the air and aims herself straight into the first hoop as it lights up - but as she maneuvers to the second she sees Noah and the others watching her from the observation room, and she catches one foot on the ring, tumbling upside down and slamming into one wall!

As you look on in surprise and shock she drifts away from the wall, stunned - and that's when you lose your concentration and the panel underneath shoots out from under you, dumping you painfully on the floor!

Flush with exertion and embarassment, the two of you barely manage to finish the course, and as you both touch the target at last, you see the Academy students laughing at your actions!

As Sam flies from the Danger Room in shame, you catch a quick glimpse of tears on her face, before she's out the door and gone. Just as you reach it, Megan steps into the room in her UMF suit and looks to the side. "Um, if you're not up to this I understand, but-"

"What, your leader can't handle an audience?" Eliza asks as she emerges into the Danger Room, already transformed into a dark gray stonelike form, and wearing a black-and-magenta suit similar to your own!

"That one can't handle losing," Alan says, materializing out of her shadow behind her. "Put in a good word for me, will you?" he asks, hiking his thumb over his shoulder in the direction she fled. "So this is the Danger Room."

While you look one more time at the doorway, Megan says "Knock it off, you jerks!" as a sparking trail of electricity runs from her hand up her arm.

"You want to try that on me, girl?" Eliza says, flexing a stone fist. "I don't think it'll-"

"Hey, cool it, Eliza. Isn't that right, Aino?" Alan asks you, grinning.

"If you're quite finished, we'd like to begin today," Ms. Frost says over the invisible speakers. "You'll be working together to solve a problem. I trust you'll all be on your best behavior."

With that, the blank walls of the Danger Room vanish, and you are plunged into a night scene of chaos! You stand on the concrete shore of a bay, and above you looms a huge bridge that spans the water! As you look up, you see the cables holding it upright begin to snap! As the bridge groans against its own weight you hear a scream coming from above, and see a woman dangling from the edge, two hundred feet above the water!

"You're a teleporter, right?" Megan shouts at Alan, pointing up at the woman. "Get up there and save her!"

"I teleport through shadows, you nitwit!" he shoots back. "If there's no light around here I can't do anything!

Slow time, focusing on the bridge itself, and whatever is acting upon it. Megan arcs a big enough current between upstretched arms to serve as a tesla coil/lightbulb. That should cast a big enough shadow under a car here and on the top of the suspension bridge for Darkstep to walk through. He climbs down to reach her and pull her up. If he can pull other people through shadows, he does so, otherwise he moves her to the top of one of the stable portions and waits. If she freezes or can't/won't cooperate, pilot takes over, helping her climb to safety. Cables don't just snap, they need energy aplied to them to overload their loadbearing capacity. Have Ricardo try to soak up any excessive energy being exerted on the cables. Also have him ready to get underneath and kill the momentum of either Darkstep or Civilian if they fall. Everyone else, help clear traffic.

Thinking quickly, you reach out to freeze whatever portion of the bridge you can reach, but from your place on the shore it's too far away!

"I'm strong enough!" Eliza says, thrusting her hands down in defiance of the distance between her and the bridge.

"Wonderful idea, Aino," Megan grins as she plants both feet widely apart on the concrete bank. "Alan, get ready, because HERE COMES THE LIGHT!" With that, a huge bolt of electricity shoots out from her hands, arcing up into the sky and illuminating everything in stark relief!

The light from her bolt casts black shadows behind everything in its glare, and you barely have time to realize Alan's hand is around your wrist before he says "Hold on," and you vanish into nothingness!

The next instant you find yourself standing on the surface of the bridge, as another cable comes loose with a loud *SPANG*! "I've got it!" Eliza shouts as she leaps up, grabbing at it!

"OK, clockface, do your thing!" Alan says as he sinks back into the shadow cast by Megan's bolt above an abandoned car, leaving you by yourself.

Use time bubble to gradually drop the woman to above sea level and have Ricardo bleed off her momentum. Complain about how this would've been a lot easier if they hadn't made Sam run off.

Just as Alan disappears into the shadow next to the car, Eliza leaps again, from her perch on the railing to the cable, but as she reaches the top of her jump it slips out of her fingers and she falls, landing on another car hard enough to collapse its roof!

The bridge tips even more to the side, and as Alan appears alongside the woman she loses her grip and they both begin to plummet toward the water, along with several large pieces of concrete from the bridge!

Desperately, you hurl your power outward, to the limit of your control's radius, and just barely manage to catch the two of them in the tachyon bubble before they exceed your limit! As you struggle to maintain your grip over the timestream they hang in midair alongside several jagged pieces of the bridge, far below your reach!

"Uhhgh-" Eliza says, pulling herself out of the impacted car. "What's going on? Alan!" she cries, running to the edge and looking over the railing. "Get him up here!"

    What now???

    >if all else fails we can just stop the woman as she is falling, and then set her down gently

Now that you're on top of the bridge it's more than 100 feet to the water below. You'd still have to drop her and Alan.

Also, there are some large chunks of concrete around them that are also being held up at this moment.

What happens if we slow down something that's underneath us?
I'm quite tempted to jump off and slowfall them down to the ground. Alan needs to be in shadows to jump, and I don't think Megan's power reaches that far.
    Only option?
Jump off after them and slowfall our way to the sea.

"You want me to what?" Eliza asks you incredulously as you lean back over the railing and shout down to Megan. A moment later the sky lights up with her electrical discharge again, an arc stretching from the ground to the highest point of the collapsing bridge, and as Eliza braces herself she tells you "This had better work!"

"Hrrrrk!" she grunts, lifting the car up and bracing it like an awkward javelin, before hurling it forward off the bridge!

"Let's go!" she says, grabbing you around the waist and leaping off the bridge after it! The rush of cool night air blows your hair back as the two of you drop toward the others - and as you cross into the tachyon bubble you've created both you and the car slow, just as Eliza lands on it with a solid *KLUNG*.

"Hurry up, I can't do this for much longer!" Megan cries from the ground! As her bolt of lightning begins to falter, you and Eliza sway as you stand on the car high above the water!

"Not a problem," Alan says, reaching up to touch the shadow underneath the car dangling above his head. "See you all real soon!" he calls as he disappears, and an instant later he reappears from the flickering shadows inside the car. "Can I give you girls a lift?" he asks, sticking his hands out through the smashed windshield.

As you and Eliza climb into the wrecked car and sink into the shadows, the now-empty car plummets into the bay as the huge chunks of concrete pound into the water around it!

A moment later you and Eliza step out of Megan's shadow, just as she loses the battle completely and falters to her knees!

    "We did it?" she asks.

Taking the formalisms of electromagnetic radiation and supposing a tachyon had an electric charge—as there is no reason to suppose a priori that tachyons must be either neutral or charged—then a charged tachyon must lose energy as Cherenkov radiation[7]—just as ordinary charged particles do when they exceed the local speed of light in a medium.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tachyon
Cherenkov radiation can also be used to determine properties of high-energy astronomical objects that emit gamma rays, such as supernova remnants and blazars. This is done by projects such as STACEE, a gamma ray detector in New Mexico.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C4%8Cerenkov_radiation

Not sure if Cerenkov-radiation vision would help at all, but it might be a nifty way to work at using the Tachyons if given the chance. Alternatively, look into how Tachyons react with matter (if at all) and attempt to manifest physical aspects of it in single points in timespace to whatever end such a think could be applied to (wall in the middle of a buss for a moment to sever it in half, putting an object in front of projectiles in motion.

"Excellent performance, children," Ms. Frost says from the observation window as the scene around you fades away to be replaced by the featureless white walls of the Danger Room.

"Hey, if she can't take a little kidding, she needs to toughen up," Eliza says as the four of you walk out the doors, to where the other students wait eagerly.

"Easy for you to say," Megan remarks. "We can't all have invulnerable epidermis."

"How long are they gonna be here, again?" Clarissa asks to no one in particular.

Well that radiation is just a shockwave analogous to a sonic boom. I don't think it can be directed very well, and the tachyons don't seem to have much kinetic energy to start with. My guess is we could create at best a Cerenkov-radiation torch..

    >>15301509
    >>15301512
As long as they are interacting with electromagnetic fields it should have at least some of that radiation. Tachyons may not be real but they have enough math to describe what they would do. Not that I'm an expert on that...

    1) Noah's never tried to combine two transformations at once, but he can alter himself in fairly rapid succession. Perhaps it's time for him to start experimenting with exactly what he can do! This wouldn't be the first time someone's brought the subject up!

    2) Clarissa's power to order computers around works at quite a wide distance - she's already shown that she can "hear" the Blackbird when it's several miles away! Whether or not she can control something from that range remains to be seen!

    3) We're always on the lookout for ideas for future issues! If you've got something on your mind, we want to hear it!
