    Long story short, http://teardown.se.

This game is Space Hulk, and it can be downloaded from http://teardown.se/

Well all right, technically it's called Alien Assault, a shitty rip-off of the game we all know and love because GW didn't let them do it properly. But this can be fixed! The right and proper graphics, as well as a couple chapters, can be found from here: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=LIBW6LZK

Proceed here to download some better music and chapters, as well as the most appropriate menu screen currently available: http://www.mediafire.com/?4xp2kblz39gmv55

Here be some voice packs: http://www.megaupload.com/?d=BV19Z8DN

This is the language file. It is important because otherwise the game will not recognize some things. Replace every other language file in the game with this. http://www.megaupload.com/?d=JZVOM415

And finally, here are the mission packs: http://pcsostres.ac.upc.edu/aramirez/doku.php?id=shulk:campaigns
Start with Sin of Damnation, Spawn of Execration, and Harbringer of Despair: they're the important main bits and relatively easy for beginners. Next, pick up everything that says it's from some official source, which tend to be slightly trickier (the screenshot is from Genestealer Invasion), and then if you like you can still take all the fan packs.

Run the game. Enjoy the most intense Space Hulk experience available on your computer since 1993!
There is no place prepared, but the code contains a little niche specifically put there for these things. The voicepacks should be in a folder called "vo", simply place this one to the main folder of the each squad, and you're good to go.

    Alien Assault/squads/0/vo, and so forth.

You think that's bad? It's easy to get everyone to a high rank: all you gotta do is to have him survive long enough while killing stuff, which gets easier when you get there.

But look at this douchebag. Nine fucking melees. That would be against a bunch of super-fast six-armed melee monsters that can cut through his power armor like a hot knife through butter, and he is armed with nothing but a power sword that probably looks like a matchstick against these dudes, and he goes and survives NINE melee combats where anyone else probably couldn't handle even one.

This guy is my fucking hero and I'm going to be so sad when he inevitably dies.

I'm not sure how well it's implemented, but in the original tabletop version plain standing and firing is more accurate. Also sometimes you just shouldn't move anywhere, like when you're in a beneficial position and hordes of stealers are coming through.

But yeah, most of the time you might as well move.

The way combat works, you need to roll a 6 on one of two dice to kill.

If you fire again without moving at the same genestealer, that becomes a 5. In previous editions, I think that later becomes a 4, then a 3, all the way down to 2+, but that clearly doesn't happen in the computer version... I have fired seven shots at a single genestealer without killing it.

    Okay, sure.

    Tips:

Don't overextend on the early levels: in the initial campiagns, you have enough firepower to overwhelm the genestealer spawn rate, so it only gets easier as time goes on. kill the genestealers down before you start making aggressive moves.

The autocannon is a lot better than the storm bolter at two things: overwatching in tight corners, where you have only a couple chances to fire on the genestealer before it gets to you, and moving and firing. If you are rushing towards a door and moving and firing, it's way better. If you are just shooting bugs at the end of a hallway, it's not much.

Overwatch isn't actually a very efficient way to kill stuff. Not only can you jam, but also, sustained fire improves the chances to hit. So if you just fired twice at a genestealer, you might be better off firing twice more, instead of overwatching.

the heavy flamer is extremely powerful for retreating and guarding flanks, but TERRIBLE for advancing, as you can't run through the flames. Don't put it in the front of your formation.

You die in corners. Don't approach a corner unlesss you have the action points to clear the stuff around the bend. And if you are in a corner without AP, put a second guy a couple squares back also on overwatch so you don't lose half your squad.

Try to spread out and cover any long tunnels quickly. That's where genestealers do badly: long linear tunnels.

a 3x3 room really doesn't have enough space for more than 2 guys to use it at once for the purposes of shooting out. Don't overpack rooms.

The power sword your sergeant has is VASTLY superior in hand to hand. Power fist marines almost always lose.
    >> Anonymous 06/18/11(Sat)19:26 No.15311294
    >>15301729

Only casuals turn on the "troops get better as they rank up" option. True men play purist mode.

Also, pretty sure that's off by default. You have to turn off "marines get better in combat as they rank up".
    >> Anonymous 06/18/11(Sat)22:31 No.15312830
Jesus. I'm playing purist mode right now. My sergeant is a BOSS, but everyone else at all is just a scrub. A scrub in every sense of the word.

So what is the difference between all of the melee weapons? The tutorial makes it clear that while powerfists are great weapons, they suck at fighting genestealers.

The power sword used by a sergeant is a little better. But in my experience that only turns a 95% chance of rape into a 90% chance.

Do claws and hammers do any better? So far my best sergeant has survived 1 of 11 melees. (not counting failed missions). I have never seen a powerfist work once. Damn scrubs.

Basically, the way combat works is everyone rolls dice, and whoever has the single highest number kills the other guy. No one dies on a tie. If you are behind or beside a guy, you don't get to kill, only turn to face if you win, and you can't use special weapons other than the storm shield (but not the thunder hammer, just the shield).

genestealers roll 3 dice. Termies roll 1.

The power fist gets +1 to attacks. The sergeant's sword adds 1 to all it's dice rolls, AND forces the genestealer to reroll his highest single dice, but only works to the front.

The thunder hammer adds 2, and the storm shield, if I can recall, reduces the number of genestealer dice to 2? (though it may be rerolsl the highest dice.) It is generally accepted to be underpowered and inferior to lightning claws in previous space hulk editions, which is what alien assualt is almost certainly copying, as it predates the new space hulk.

The lightning claws roll two dice, adding 2 to each. They are generally considered the "good" weapons.

This is from memory, I might be wrong. But generally, you will almost always lose a power fist duel, frequently lose a power sword duel, rarely lose a lightning claw duel (Significantly less than 10% of the time), and should never take thunder hammers if you aren't forced to.

But yeah. The entire point is that terminators die in close combat... unless you get to pick your own loadout, in which case you can often just take 8 lightning claw marines and 2 flamers, and go to town. Though that works less well on really long missions, where bad luck will start losing you marines over time.

Gotta expand on this one. A single lone flamer can advance AWESOMELY as long as he has fuel left. Torch the stealers, then head on as long as you can: at the beginning of the next round, the places you just fried are empty because no stealers went there. So advance some more, burn the resistance, and repeat.

    FRY!

Just copy one of the other folders (I'd suggest whichever has the Blood Angels) then rename it to a different number. Replace the sprites.bmp in the folder, then edit the settings text file (its just the name of the chapter. Replace "Blood Angels" with "Flesh Tearers". After that, you're sorted.

If you want, you can edit the names text file (in the data folder) and add some Flesh Tearer names (I just took the five or so I could find and mixed them in with the Blood Angel names). You don't really have to do this to get the chaptet to work though.

Here is a question, why can i restart missions as if the previous mission never went wrong, but i have to constantly start with a new squad this way.

Why can't i restart a mission with the same marines i started it previously?

No it doesn't makes sense to say they simply started it anew with a new team, because they wouldn't put another team into my care if the previous one got slaughtered under my command.

This is either the designer wanting to make the game harder, or just the game being not fully developed.

But it sure as hell is annoying.

Some times this game makes me rage. I go from one mission where I have to kill a certain amount of stealers and my sergeant gets 19 kills on his own, 7 of those in melee, whilst everyone else dies, and he goes up two ranks. The very next mission the first genestealer that appears runs through three overlapping fields of fire and instant gibs the same sergeant.

You know I played my first game of Space Crusade last week?
It's actually pretty interesting to see how far (or little) the designs have come. Hell, I actually kind of think that the Chaos Space Marines in the SC set are actually better than the ones GW do currently. Oh sure, from a technical point of view they're inferior, but in terms of design, I can't help but think they look better.

Also, I can help but feel that to an 8 year old, 20 years ago? Space Crusade must have been FUCKING sweet. All those cool plastic models? Those cards? Cardboard terrain everywhere? Replayability? THAT FUCKING DREADNAUGHT? Holy shit this thing must have been the best christmas present ever.

But if you fire so that the flame template is pushed up as far as it can be, there is a 1/6 chance the genestealer will survive and eat you next turn, and it takes a lot of AP to fire again. Also, the flamer can't move and fire, so it takes a full 2 ap just to shoot, whereas the autocannon can often just move and fire 4 times and be all right.

So really, you are only advancing 2 squares a turn, max. As compared to an assault cannon or storm bolter getting 2 at minimum, often upwards of 6.

It is pretty much the way it has to be though. Remember, this used to be a two player board game. The nid player has almost no signficant decisions to make, either: nids almost play themselves. So when you think about it, the outcome HAS to be somewhat luck based, as otherwise, a skilled Terminator player would just win every game and a bad terminator player would lose every game, and that would mean that the game would be boring as fuck.

Yeah, sometimes your lightning claw marine dies on his second genestealer kill and everything falls apart, especially in the harder campaigns. But it was meant to be a board game, not a computer game.
    >> Anonymous 06/19/11(Sun)17:52 No.15320786
    >>15320741
I personally think the ranking system is a good way to offset this, allowing a skilled player to make it somewhat less luck-based. Not that I haven't lost an archangel in a tougher mission more than once.
    >> Anonymous 06/19/11(Sun)17:56 No.15320819
    >>15320786

But it's also going to make the game a lot easier, no?

Really, a sergeant with rank up bonuses and lightning claws should be nearly invincible. Bonuses don't stack well, especially for close combat, where you don't even need AP to keep fighting, long as you have a narrow corridor to hide in.
    >> Anonymous 06/19/11(Sun)18:15 No.15320912

But in close combat, a single bad roll is instantly fatal. And it will always come eventually.
    >> Anonymous 06/19/11(Sun)18:38 No.15321077
    >>15320912

If you give a sergeant with power claws an additional +1 to his rolls, he would win or draw 98.8% of all combats. Having one of those in a mission would make ANY mission a hell of a lot easier. Power claws, their main strength is not actual killing power, it's that in linear sections, you don't HAVE to kill anything, you can just keep walking and ignore the mass of genestealers.

As for actually getting veteran, that wouldn't be hard. you only need an average of 4 kills a mission to rank up as fast as possible.

This game makes me so sad :(

I'm at the point where I know what the hell I'm doing but the little refinements in my strategy all are missing. They generally go like this:

    > Mission begins
    > CONTACT!
    > DAKKA DAKKA
    > My force moves steadily towards the objective, no losses so far.
    > Suddenly I remember the tunnels
    > THEYRE IN THE WALLS
    > Three terminators slaughtered in as many seconds, left flank collapses
    > Stumble on, then fizzle out and lose

All of this is punctuated by incredible moments of awesome. Like a sergeant chopping up 3 stealers in a row. Or a having a scrub getting attacked FROM BEHIND, spin around and beat the genestealer to death. All of this just makes it hurt more when they invariably die. :'(

Level grinding (if you want to)
    Single Mission
    Song of Destruction
    Kill them all
Move all your marines into the room where Marine 5 starts.
2 marines in the corners next to the door, on overwatch.
2 marines in back on overwatch, one at the middle back, one at the corner.
Marine with flamer stands in back corner.

When the bugs start filling into the only room with access to Spawn 5, use the heavy flamer. For the individual ones, just let the marine in the middle/back shoot them with overwatch. If they manage to make it all the way down the hallway (he missed a lot, or more likely, jammed) the other 3 marines will have 2 shots at the bug before it has a chance to attack, and then you'll be able to shoot the bug on your turn (it spends a whole turn to get down the hall) at least 4 more times with bolters. (If everyone jams, just have them unjam, shoot, back to overwatch)

Marine at the back covering the whole hall and the one with the flamer will rack up kills very, very fast.

This works best if you have the "firing increases with level" on

If there are bunches of stealers, I can get my flamer guy kills from them, except for the last shot which is saved so that I can finish the mission. The hallways are long enough that the enemy can never reach the marines.

It would be a lot easier if

I just started yesterday, and I am on mission 5 of 6. It's obviously doable, but I am going to have to get lucky rolling lots of command points in the first 3 turns, to get to the major intersections in time.

Overall, though, I don't like it much. It's not that it's HARD, it's that it's completely random. the time limit is punitive, and one of the points specifically just takes too long to get to: the bottom point on map 5 is a full ten turn sprint for any starting marine, but the mission is only 15 turns long, and there is no way to cover that marine's advance to the point, as it's all one long tunnel.

the key to hard levels is to use the flamer to flame a corner, and then SPRINT a marine up to the corner, where he can round it and start shooting everything. The only other way to get around a corner quickly is to rely heavily on melee rolls, which can go very badly very quickly. But to be honest, I don't think genestealer invasion is a very good campaign. The fourth mission was cool just because of the ambush mechanic in the rooms, so you end up standing outside and carefully firing into the rooms at the cryo containers, but most of it so far has not really been compelling.

Not really. They are pretty standard for space hulk: it's not a difficult game, but you really do have to understand how to move your marines, or the game is very hard. But overall, the only really "tough" mission, I would say, is that "into the wild mission, one where you have to close all those doors on a huge map and they give you like 6 autocannons, zero flamers, and only a small number of actual storm bolters. It's a bit tricky to get to the top of the map with enough guys who still have bullets left to close those last doors.

Try the editor and give the mission full armory access if it's too hard.

I wonder how hard it would be to put together a Space Hulk FPS with UDK. Not a FPS in a generic shooter sense. But a first person version of Space Hulk.

I mean, the level tilesets are somewhat simple, and there is only few character models, and one enemy type with limited required intelligence (no shooting or complex terrain navigation).

It would be fun as a multiplayer. Each player controls one Marine. Would be fun panic-y mayhem.

And yeah, I know about the DoW mod.

The problem with a Multiplayer Space Hulk, is the fact that you can't trust people for shit AND there would be constant bitching on who would go first, who's blocking the LoS, and the faggots complaining that they insisted on staying in the back and getting ass raped because of it.

Welcome to hell! I would suggest playing the Tutorial Campaign and reading the manual at the same time. The core mechanics are not difficult to understand, the game is just always brutally hard.

Biggest thing to remember, the Rule of 6. Marines get 4 action points, Genestealers have 6. If genestealers get any closer than 7 spaces, its time to panic. All it takes is one turn for them to turn a marine into chutney.

When you download a campaign it will come in a numbered folder. Just place this into the right game folder and give it a number.

The default campaigns are 1-4. Folder 29 is reserved for standalone missions. If you want to add a new one make it folder #5 or 6 etc.

Poor Norris, you were no scrub. You gave your life on a 46:1 ratio, allowing for a successful mission as you slowly moved up through the corridor, obliterating all Xenos in sight.
