"Hey there, kid, you must be Aino! So Stretch didn't scare ya off the first time you were here, huh?" the huge orange man says amiably as he engulfs your hand in his own rocky four-fingered grip and shakes it. "Welcome aboard, name's Grimm, but you can call me Ben," he continues, letting go of your hand and gesturing behind him to the lobby of Four Freedoms Plaza. "Reed'll be down in a minute - he's always got some too-important-ta-wait project goin' on. Ya get used ta that pretty quick. Nice ta meet ya, kid," he says, as the express elevator doors open, revealing the tall, lanky form of Dr. Reed Richards, aka Mr. Fantastic of the Fantastic Four!

"From what I understand, Ben, our newest employee has already met us on a few occasions, or at least beings very much like us," Dr. Richards says, stepping out of the elevator and shaking your hand. "Hello, Aino, it's good to see you again. To be perfectly honest," he says as you and Ben Grimm follow him back into the elevator, "I wasn't sure whether or not the events you'd witnessed in the past week had soured you on our company."

"What happened? She come in when I was sleepwalkin' again?" Grimm asks.

"Hardly, my friend," Richards says, shaking his head as the elevator ascends toward the top floors of the hundred-story building. "Through events that may be connected to us, Aino was transported to a past time, where she met a younger version of the Fantastic Four*."

"How come I don't remember ever meetin' her before, then?" Grimm says incredulously.

"Indeed, the first I'd heard of this was when Professor Charles Xavier informed me of what you had told him," Richards continues, looking at you. "Since we have no recollection of the event, it confirmed my suspicions that your actions created an alternate timeline branching out in a different direction."

"So what, you were worried that she got one look at your junior-league mug and decided to high-tail it?" Grimm says as the elevator reaches the laboratories on the 81st floor.

"Hardly, Ben," Reed says with a twinge of discomfort on his face. "You see, the catalyst of her time-travel experience was precipitated by a future version of myself - one who robbed her of her mutant powers in a misguided attempt to save the timestream from collapsing."

The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

With a week left in your two-week break before the summer session begins (and thanks to a few well-placed words from Dr. McCoy of the Xavier School), you've been granted the chance to work as an intern for Dr. Richards! Once school resumes you'll have to make this a part-time job, but for one week, at least, you're a full-time member of the Four Freedoms staff!

Time to make with the gofer work, and make a good impression on Dr. Richards and the lab staff! Let's find out how well Aino shines by rolling a d100! To roll, type noko dice 1d100 in the email field! Highest of three rolls determines how well she does!

"When I was an intern in college, I spent many a night washing beakers and glassware," Reed says, showing you around the lab. "Now, of course, those chores are all automated. Besides, based on our conversation the first time we met, I have the feeling your talents would be wasted over the sink," he smiles.

"To familiarize yourself with this equipment, I'll have you start by monitoring this virtual reaction," Dr. Richards explains as he taps on a computer and brings up a screen of test agents. "Most of this could be done with no human oversight, but even the greatest minds must start somewhere!" As he leaves, he stretches his neck back inside and says "This should take you at least a few hours to work through. I'll come down and check on your progress in an hour."

    One hour later...

"...and this is where the portal to the Negative Zone is housed," Dr. Richards says, gesturing as a large armored door slides open, revealing a huge structure housed within the two-story room. "Of course, access is strictly controlled," he notes as the door slides closed again. "Even for someone as bright as yourself, it is still an incredibly dangerous place. One that I don't wish to return to."

"I'm still amazed that you were able to get through that entire set of reactions in such a short amount of time," he continues as the two of you leisurely walk through the hallway of the 90th floor. "I can tell Dr. McCoy was not exaggerating when he called you one of his brightest students. I wasn't planning on introducing you to the staffed laboratories for a few weeks, but it seems I've underestimated your aptitude," Richards says.

"Here we are," he says, as the two of you enter the bright, gleaming laboratory on the 92nd floor, stepping into the busy, well-lit room. Several men and women in lab coats work dutifully throughput the room, and behind them a broad window gives a view of the Manhattan streets far below. "Ladies and gentlemen, this is Aino Virta, our newest intern. She'll be working with us this summer," he says, as several of the staff look up and greet you.

"Dr. Monroe is one of our chief researchers," he says, introducing you to a short man wearing a Hawaiian shirt under his lab coat. "He'll be your direct supervisor as long as you're working in here."

"Hi there, young lady," Dr. Monroe says, looking up. "I'd shake your hand, but I'm a little preoccupied. We've been working all month to get these links established between our reality and the Microverse. If what Dr. Richards suspects is true, we might be able to use the ambient forces of another dimension to provide nearly unlimited power."

"I think you'll find that Aino is capable of rising to whatever task you present to her," Richards tells him. "Aino, I'm sorry to run off like this, but I have some things that need attending to elsewhere. Since you're a little ahead of schedule, feel free to simply observe these men and women and learn the routine."

And so you do, trying to stay out of their way and simultaneously show how helpful you can be, in only the way that a 15-year old can accomplish. A few of the staff seem to be impressed with your ability to recall and connect disparate ideas into useful forms, and while some others seem to resent having a teenager in the middle of their lab, your first day seems to be going great!

"Yes?" one of the scientists asks, picking up the telephone on one wall of the lab. "Of course. Excuse me, miss?" she asks, holding the phone out to you. "You have a phone call." As you cross the room to answer it, a couple of the less-enamored scientists glance up at you, but when you hold the receiver up to your ear you suddenly have something else to think about!

"A-Aino?" Sam's voice chokes out with a sob. "Aino, I'm so- I'm so-" she stumbles, breaking down and crying into the phone unintelligibly.

"Excuse me, some people have work to do," a technician says irately as he pushes past you around the counter.

If there is, we could duplicate super-speed in a small bubble around ourselves and be there in seconds. If 'flexing' our power slows time, what would happen if we 'stretch' it instead?

"Aino, what am I gonna do?" Sam asks piteously. "I mean - huh? I'm at our apartment right now. Why?"

"-Hmph, kids these days," he says as he realizes you're not next to him anymore. "That's odd-" he mutters to himself as he checks his watch. "Battery must be getting low. I could swear it showed the same time as the building clock this morning..." he says, looking up.

A short time later (even shorter, for some people), you track down Dr. Richards with the aid of one of the building's omnipresent robots. "Here you are, Ms. Virta," it says pleasantly as it floats into an identical laboratory, except this one is empty aside from Richards himself!

"Aino, what's wrong?" he says, the concern still plainly evident on your face. "Your friend- yes, I remember Samantha," he says, nodding as you explain what's wrong as confidentially as you can. "I understand. The people we care about are the most important things in the world. Take as much time as you need to sort this out," Richards says, stretching one hand out behind you down the hallway. "I'm afraid I can't accompany you - this procedure is at a crucial stage - but the Fantasticar will carry you there more quickly than a taxi could, and you'll avoid the noontime traffic as well."

Dr. Richards leads you to an elevator and the two of you go up, all the way to the top floor, where the amazing Fantasticar lies parked and waiting! "I'm programming it to take you to her address," he says, holding up a small device from a nearby table. "When you're ready to return, just select this-" he demonstrates a control on the Fantasticar's panel.

As the window of the 100th floor slides away, Richards waves, and the Fantasticar glides forward, carrying you out into the air high above the Manhattan skies!

"I'm going outside!" Sam shouts angrily, thrusting her Yankees cap down on her head and stomping out of her room. Her mother begins to say something, but whatever might be contained in that word balloon stretching out from off-panel is obscured by Sam yelling "I don't care!" as she slams the door.

"Arrgh!" she shouts, flying down the hallway to the elevator and landing just in time to avoid being seen using her mutant power by an elderly couple as they step around the corner.

"Kids these days," the old woman mutters to her husband as the two of them stand waiting for the elevator.

"I swear, I'm gonna punch the guy who designed that elevator-" Sam says to herself a few minutes later as she bangs the front doors of her apartment building open and tromping out into the dazzling summer sun, still frowning. "Why they decided to install the slowest elevator in the world in my building, I don't-"

She stops, and the last two panels on the page are both the same close-up of her face. In the first she's merely dumbfounded, but in the second she asks simply, "Aino?"

Sam stands looking out at the Manhattan street and the tall buildings beyond with her back to the reader, but immediately before her Aino stands leaning on the side of the Fantasticar casually, holding two ice-cream cones.

"I don't know, it's just-" Sam begins as the two of you walk down the sidewalk eating your ice-cream cones as they begin to drip in the hot sun. "I mean, my dad is cool with me being a mutant. He wasn't, you know, jumping up and down with happiness when they found out, but it's not like he ever let it come between us. The whole reason I started going to the Xavier School was because of this girl in Queens that got killed the year before. Some people found out she was a mutant and pushed her out a window."

"My parents got really scared that something was gonna happen to me if people found out I could fly. That's funny, you know?" she says, crunching the last bits of her cone. "I mean, I can just fly away from trouble. But that's not how they saw it. Then Mr. Summers and the Professor came over, and told them they knew I was a mutant. Mom and Dad got so scared that they were gonna turn them in to the police or something. I didn't know what was happening. Then after they explained it, Mom wanted me to go to the Mansion so I'd be "safe," but Dad said that I would be better off being around normal kids and just not using my power."

"But I can't do that!" she says, suddenly raising her voice and making a pair of competing sidewalk T-shirt vendors look over at you. "I can't do that," she continues, more quietly. "You know what I mean. I can't just *not fly*. That's like asking a marathon runner to just sit still forever."

"Urgh, this is too much stress. I'm supposed to be on vacation!" Sam says, as the two of you carefully pick your way down the grassy embankment to a small playground at the bottom. "You ever think about just leaving all this stuff and going into the superhero thing full-time?" she asks as the two of you sit down on the swings next to each other.

"I know some of the other guys joke about it, but I heard a story once, when I first moved to the Mansion," Sam continues. "Noah talked to this guy that used to hang out with the teachers, and he told Noah about this group of mutants that's not with either the Professor or Magneto. Like, they used to be friends with the teachers, but then they split."

"He said they were called X-Force," she says, looking up at the clouds beyond the office high-rises in the distance.

"Anyway, I don't know what's gonna happen. It would be nice if there was some way I could just get back and forth between my dad's and the School, but I don't think I could fly across the country every day. Maybe I'll spontaneously develop teleportative abilities," Sam says, deadpan. "You like that? I learned that from Megan. "Teleportative abilities."

"Maybe you're right," she says, looking at you. "Maybe if he sees that it's not like a zoo or a riot at the Mansion all the time, he'll be OK with it. You're right, we are all normal!" she says, and when you add the caveat Sam joins in at the same time and you say together "Except Ricardo!"

Thirty seconds, one crying jag and one five-minute hug later, Sam wipes her face with her wrist and smiles. "I've got until the end of the summer before things are finalized, at least. Maybe I'll be able to get him to come up and stay with us for a little while. Oh, geez, you don't think some crazy supermutant is gonna try to break in while he's there, do you?"

Pretty Sure it's a telekinetic "force" that lets her fly. And plenty of room for that to be awesome. Just that we have to let her have a moment in the spotlight, instead of being timefreeze triggyhappy.

"Uh-" her father says, caught off-guard. "Uh, sure, honey. I'll be - tell you what, I'm pretty busy right now, but I'll call your teacher and we'll set up a time soon, OK?"

"That went better than expected," she says as the Fantasticar climbs into the sky. While you contact Dr. Richards (for the second time) and explain your idea to treat the other employees for their patience, he smiles and says "You're a very thoughtful young woman, Aino. I know just the place."

Fifteen minutes later, the two of you re-enter the laboratory, just as the scientists reach a point in the Microverse experiment where their attention is not demanded!

"Hey, everyone, donuts!" one of the technicians calls into the hallway, and a few minutes later you are joined by several other staffers, as well as Dr. Richards and Mr. Grimm, as they enjoy an impromptu donut break!

"I hope everything was all right," Dr. Monroe, the lab's senior scientist tells you as the empty boxes begin to pile up. "Dr. Richards told me that you had to leave to attend to a personal matter. As much as I loathe absentee employees, I suppose you did make up for it," he says, smiling as he points to the boxes with stylized dancing donuts on them.

"Say, Aino, when you get a moment, run this up to the ninetieth floor repository, would you?" one of the other scientists asks you as she wheels a cart with some prototype equipment on it up next to where you and Sam stand.

"Can I come with?" Sam asks.

"I don't see why not," the scientist responds as someone else calls her over to their workstation. "Just come right back down as soon as you drop it off," she says as she hurries away.

"So how many times were you in here before?" she asks as the two of you take the staff elevator up. "Once in the past, and once in the way future, and once in the sort of future when you were in your grown-up self's body-" she counts off on her fingers, recollecting each leg of the strange tale you told her about.

As you wheel the cart down the hallway while Sam continues, you notice that a heavy door on the wall is open partway - and you realize that it leads to the room with the portal to the Negative Zone! From beyond, you hear a crackling sound and a loud voice proclaim "Ah-ha! My plan has worked perfectly! Richards' traitorous servant activated the portal, allowing me to penetrate the heart of his sanctuary with ease!"

Peeking through the doorway you see a huge, hideous-looking humanoid emerge from the strange portal which now stands open and active! It looks around, not noticing you, and proclaims "Now I will destroy him and have my vengeance!"

Our paths have crossed since then - he sees Earth as a viable conquest for a new empire, I'm afraid. Regarding parent traps. Yes, ethically, I believe that relationships should not be forced. Either through powers or situations. However, the idea came to me in the form of "What's a CCA way of familial problem resolution?" Clearly, Disney has subverted my conscious thought processes here. . . Basically, I support learning more about their relationship, asking other trustworthy adults (Professor X, McCoy, Logan?) about relationship advice, and giving Sam's Folks more opportunity to talk to each other. If the 'forcing' isn't working, let it be, if it does, then great! Maybe his job is the problem, if he is so far away so often. . .

    A) Sam should tell her mom about her new job! SO EXCITING!

    B) We should spend part of the night listening to Sam's Mom explain how they were when they dated, why they liked each other, etc. Maybe go through some old photo-albums, and 8mm slideshows. (90s!)

    C) "Oh, no, I spent all my cash on donuts!" - I totally got a Homer Simpson vibe off of that.

"Oh geez, I can't believe how dorky you guys look!"

"Well, that was a long time ago! Things were different!" Mrs. Binh says as she takes the photo album back from you and Sam, while Rashomon plays in the background. "Hmm-" she says, running a hand over the laminated photographs.

"You are *not* pulling a Parent Trap with my mom and dad!" Sam laughs, four hours, one pizza and two movies later as she hurls a piece of popcorn at you from the floor of her room. "And you're not getting the Professor or Ms. Frost to make him change his mind, either. That's creepy. Plus, it's totally unethical, remember? Free will and all that stuff."

"Listen, I know you want to help, but this stuff... it's complicated, you know? Some things you can't fix with superpowers. And you're not a psychologist, you're a nerd who solves crime on the side. You're- aaah!" Sam shrieks as she finds the bowl of popcorn upside-down above her head an instant later. "Aaaa! No powers, no powers!" she cries, flying up into the air next to the heavy-metal posters on her wall and shaking popcorn out of her hair.

Later that night, after everything else has settled down, you lie on the futon near Sam's bed, staring out at the lights of the city, when her voice rouses you from the edge of sleep.

    "Hey, Aino?"

    "You're a pretty great friend."

The next days are hectic, with Aino shuttling between the Mansion, Four Freedoms Plaza, and the Binh household. Her work keeps her busy, as we see a page-long montage of the scientists making more use of her and Sam throughout the week, while she becomes an increasingly familiar sight in the Binh's apartment. Before she knows it the week is over, and her full-time job working for Dr. Richards comes to a close as the summer session of Professor Xavier's school draws near.

"OK, sweetie, you be good! Love you!" Mrs. Binh calls as you and Sam climb out of her car at the steps of the Mansion. "Bye, Mom! Love you!" Sam hollers back, rolling her eyes as she looks at you. "Parents. Gotta humor 'em."

The two of you walk up the path to the steps as Sam's mom drives off, but as you reach for the doorhandle it opens, and Clarissa stands on the inside!

    "Ohmygoshyouguysaren'tgonnabelievethis!" she blurts out, frantically.

"Whoa, whoa, slow down, tiger, what's the problem?" Sam asks, reflexively floating up into the air. "More Sentinels? Dinosaurs? Killer clowns?"

"They're bringing the students from the Massachusetts Academy down here for the summer! You know, the school Ms. Frost runs?"

    "So?" Sam asks.

"So?" Clarissa asks irately. "Have you ever *met* those kids-"

She stops and looks past the two of you, down the driveway to where a long black limousine turns and rolls through the open gate toward the Mansion. As it approaches, it slows and stops with the passenger side facing you. A moment later, the door opens and Ms. Frost steps out.

"Good morning, children. Say hello to your new friends."

With that, the doors open, and seven people roughly your own age step out - three young women and four young men!

"So this is Xavier's class?" one of them asks, scowling at you. "No wonder they're second-best."

Slice their fingers off, just the tips, no joints. They will grow back. Aino does not like people who diss her friends. Any chance of a super battle next issue, Prof?

Holds very much true. . .

Now for the question. Now that Aino is a powerhouse of ability, how much can we expect the other Xavier students, (and I guess Frost students) to push their own development? I figure that most of them should be growing their powers as Aino is, so are suprises in store?

These dicks could actually work in our favor. What better way to convince Sam's father than by having a baseball game or whatever between the schools on the day he visits? Makes us look much less isolationist. Powers-on, too, so he can see Sam being happy, enjoying what she is. Makes his suggestion to just hide her mutantness seem stupid and short-sighted, even to himself.

You're right that the rest of the class has been progressing with their own abilities! Come to think of it, we haven't had a knock-down, drag-out all-student brawl for a few issues! Let's hope that changes!

We understand that as a parent you might feel that some things are inappropriate for certain readers. We always suggest that families read our comics together - after all, that way everyone gets to enjoy them!
