"There it is again. Right there, a sort of bending of the light, like a shimmering," a voice says from outside the black edges of the high-tech binoculars as they survey the long-collapsed rubble that was once supposedly a school for mutants. "You think it's a force field of some kind?" the word bubble asks in the second panel, as the wreckage draws in closer, showing a tantalizing view of a partly-covered sign where the words "IFTED YOUN" can just barely be made out.

"Not likely," the other voice says from the edge of the third panel. "I'm not picking up any of the standard force-field frequencies. My guess is it's some kind of holographic image emitter. Keeps people from noticing what's really going on down there."

In the splash page that spans across the next two pages, four people stand on the jagged rooftop of half-constructed hundred-story tenement, looking out over bleak bombed-out scrubland. With the sign "Westchester Resettlement Facility - A Great Place to Live!" in the background, the four pose at the ready with their own explanatory text boxes orbiting each of them!

Aino Virta, aka Tachyon, aka "Martha": Time-slowing mutant. Likely cause and possible savior of this whole mess. UMF suit by Reed Richards. Powered armor by Stark-Fujikawa.

Karl: Cyborg bodyguard. Veteran of the Pollution Wars.

Atlas: Psychic conductor and former property of Stark-Fujikawa.

    Spider-Man 2099: Like Spider-Man, only in 2099.

"I saw everything you witnessed when your mind was switched*," Atlas says to you, again rubbing the electronic connection ports that cover his head. "Those people you knew... that you still know in the past... I'm sorry they died." As he turns to look at the ruins of the X-Mansion, he casts a glance back and says "At least Master Mold thinks it stopped the timestream collapse. It thought the collapse had been halted because of what you did... but it still sees you as a loose end."

"I for one don't like the idea of a killer computer program controlling Stark-Fujikawa's headquarters and operating a time-travel murderbot program on the side," Spider-Man interjects from his perch at the tip of one of the tenement's broken walls. "I think that if we do manage to get you through this time portal...thing.... for some reason I want to call it a time platform...What was I talking about?"

"After we get Martha through," Karl reminds him, using the alias everyone in this time knows you by... except perhaps Karl himself.

"Right," Spider-Man continues. "If we do manage that - er, I mean, after we do that," he says, getting a pointed look from your erstwhile shepherd. "The next step is to take it out of commission. I don't know how powerful Master Mold is, but I've let a few friends of mine know about it, so they should at least be keeping it busy for the time being. You said there were no physical lines between Four Freedoms and Mansion X, right?" he asks Atlas, who nods and agrees.

"Leave the demolition to me," Karl says, checking his service lasergun for readiness.

As you quietly engage your armor's thrusters and rise up into the night sky clutching Karl in the suit's mechanical arms, you hear Atlas call from where he and Spider-Man dangle from the armor on a webline. "I can keep them from detecting us as we approach," he says as you pass over a huge crater and the broken ruins of the Westchester Theater, "but once we get close I don't think it will work."

You dip your suit lower, until Spider-Man and Atlas are only twenty feet above the ground, and as he reels in his webline to hang only a short distance below you he asks "So you're really from the Heroic Age, huh? From the stories I've heard, you people did this kind of thing all the time. You seem a little young for the job, though."

Karl looks down at the masked figure and asks "Don't you ever get sick of talking?"

"Nah, it's one of my super-powers," comes the response, as he reels himself out a few feet longer. your eyes cast back up to the darkened and bomb-swept ground, and in front of you the ruins of the Xavier School swell into view!

"Hurgh-" Atlas groans, squeezing his eyes shut! A spark emanates from the metallic plugs on his head, and suddenly Karl slaps his robotic eye!

    "My sensors!"

"Sorry, sorry!" Atlas says, concentrating, and a moment later Karl relaxes. "This guy's pretty good," he confirms to you. "There's about thirty copies of us all coming in at once - breaching the shell in five, four, three-"

At once, you pass through a curtain of nothingness, and the ruins of Charles Xavier's school disappear into a curtain of light! Below you is a factory ground teeming with bright lights, and in the center of it is a wide building guarded by a trio of Sentinals!

"ALERT! MULTIPLE TARGETS HAVE BREACHED VISUAL SCREEN! ALL UNITS, ENGAGE!"

"TEMPORAL ANOMALY MATCHING WANTED MUTANT DETECTED-" one of them blares, looking away to where your tachyon-slowed bubble hangs some five hundred feet from you!

"Here you go, pal," Spider-Man says as he swings low to the ground and gently drops Atlas to the hard concrete ground outside the main building. While he concentrates on maintaining the illusion of roughly three dozen other versions of your newfound team, you fly directly at the lead Sentinel, and at the last moment you drop him down to Spider-Man's waiting arms and plunge yourself straight through the robot's chest, enveloping yourself in a tachyon-propelled bubble that lances you through it at hypersonic speed!

"ALERT, CHRONOLOGICAL INTERFE-" it blurts out before collapsing, and as you spin the suit around for another pass you clutch your hand into a fist and pull the second Sentinel's insides to a halt while leaving the rest to move, just like the robot in Four Freedoms a few hours ago!

It throws its arms outward, trying to keep its balance as its internal workings seize up and it crashes to the ground with an earth-shaking vibration!

While Karl uses his laser to carve an entrance into the main complex and Atlas stands nearly doubled-over next to him, the third Sentinel suddenly turns and swats something out of the night sky -

    - and a second later Spider-Man lands at your feet!

"Oof," he moans. "These things don't go down as easily without power armor."

As you send a glance toward Karl and Atlas, you see the first Sentinel you downed begin to move... and then begin to rise!

    "REPAIR SEQUENCE INITIATED."

"What are you-?" Spider-Man starts to ask, as the two of you suddenly stand inside a small bubble of realtime, while the three Sentinels hang motionless on all sides of you, looming in like collapsing buildings.

"Got it, complete concentration. I'll shut up."

The timestream flows all around you, and in this heightened state, with the memory of your powers in the full bloom of adulthood still fresh in your mind and the reconfigured suit's power amplifying and channeling your own, you can practically see the waves crashing up against the edge of your time-stopped island.

With one determined close-up panel Aino raises her fist and pulls her mouth to the corner with just the slightest grin.

And the three Sentinels, hanging helpless in one panel after the next-

-collapse into clouds of hardware that launch themselves apart in a slow-motion explosion!

"Wow," Spider-Man says. "That's some trick."

"What just hap - Oh," Karl says. "OK, let's go, Atlas is looking weaker by the second. I don't know how much longer he can keep fooling them."

Inside the main complex more than a dozen Sentinels work busily constructing more of their kind, and in the center of the factory is a wide structure crowned with a tall rectangular frame, from which dozens of thick cables snake out of! Two Sentinels operate some kind of control panel at the side of the structure, while a third reports "COMMUNICATION WITH MASTER MOLD IS STILL NOT REESTABLISHED. CONTINUE MONITORING ALL KNOWN TIMELINES UNTIL FURTHER ORDERED."

"Bet my paycheck that's what we're looking for," Spider-Man mutters quietly as you peer out from the shadows at the activity.

"Do you even have a paycheck?" Atlas asks, cracking a joke for the first time since you've known him.

"I *do* have a day job, you know," Spider-Man retorts.

With that, Atlas cries out as another spark pops in the air above his plug-encrusted head and he sags to the ground!

"ALERT, PROXIMITY HAS BEEN BREACHED!" one of the Sentinels near you calls out, turning around quickly! "VISUAL SCAN CONFIRMS WANTED MUTANT AIN-" it manages to get out before freezing in place and collapsing in a heap, along with the hapless unit next to it!

Two more fall as you stride across the room, untouchable in your tachyon cocoon, waving your arms and forcing their components to break away from each other, but then -

    *beep beep beep beep*

"I don't know if - yipe!" Spider-Man says to you, leaping up from where a Sentinel blasts a beam of searing energy from its palm directly where he stood and charring the concrete floor! "I don't know how good of an idea that is! I mean, no offense, but these computers are probably out of your league... what's that beeping?"

You can only look in confusion as your power armor's holographic display tells you that an entire bank of the reconfigured emitters that channel your tachon control have blown!

"Slow 'em down, kid!" Karl shouts from across the room near the control bank of the huge machine.

Just as one of the Sentinels turns to fire at him with its deadly beam, it cries out "TEMPORAL ANOM-" before shredding itself to pieces! As the wave of tachyons swells around you, forcing itself outward in all directions like a supernova, the power armor's emitters explode outward as well!

"Maybe if we had a few hours I could rig something up-" he says, examining the row of blown-out emitters running down the suit's forearm.

"We don't have a few hours," Karl says grimly. "I've got the systems under my control for now, thanks to Atlas here," he says, gesturing between frantic typing to the man slouched on the steps leading up to the huge empty rectangular frame, "but according to this at least some of those Sentinels managed to get a distress call out to others like them. It won't be long before we've got more company."

"Hey," Atlas says, waving weakly. "When I came too, suddenly there was nothing left for me to do around here," he grins at you.

"OK, I've gotten a workaround, but I don't know if it wor-" Karl starts to say before the huge upright rectangle springs to life with an electric-blue hole in the air that you instantly recognize as a time portal!

As it leaps into existence you can see the world beyond it - a warm summer day, on the lawn of the Mansion, the very place you were thrown into the rift from this morning, as half a dozen Sentinels battle the few classmates of yours who remained at the school that fateful morning so many years and timelines ago!

As you watch, stunned to see the world you thought you might never return to, you realize one of the Sentinels is battling the others, and though your heart leaps to see that Clarissa is still alive and able to exercise her mutant control over computers, the other Sentinels turn on their co-opted sibling and fire on it to destroy it!

"Oh, wow," Spider-Man says quietly, watching the scene in front of him.

"Yeah, kid... Aino," Karl says, clutching your hand and shaking it. "I can't go back to work for Stark-Fuji. Even if I wasn't on the run. You opened my eyes to how bad they really are. Things like this-" he gestures over at Atlas and the Stark-Fujikawa Test Subject jumpsuit he wears. "Maybe once we blow this place I'll head west. I hear there's still a few places between here and California left standing. Might be able to find work out there."

"I have nothing to go back to," Atlas says, shaking his head. As far as the Public Eye is concerned, I'm a degen. They'd just as soon send me back to Four Freedoms as shoot me." As he looks at the glow of the time portal he says wistfully "The Heroic Age... Is it really true that this place was a school for mutants?"

"I don't mean to break up this greeting-vid moment, lady and gentlemen, but according to this, the time portal's been damaged, and it's only going to stay open a few more-"

With that, you turn and leap forward, engaging the suit's thrusters and plummeting into the dizzying realm between timelines!

An instant later, you fly out into the bright blue sky of early summer, straight toward a Sentinel bearing down on a small figure - Ricardo! Just as he looks back at its sweeping beam of deadly energy cascading toward him he is suddenly lifted up into the air on mechanical arms!

"AINO?!" he shouts, looking back at you with wide-eyed confusion as his feet skim above the bright green grass of the lawn. "Didn't I just throw you in there?"

"Things change quickly, kid," a voice from your back says, as Atlas peeks out over the shoulder of your armor!

"Who the - What do you mean 'kid'? You're only a little older than I am!" Ricardo says, full of bluster even in the middle of a full-scale battle.

<<It is a relief to see you again, Aino,>> the Professor's voice echoes inside your head as you carry Ricardo and Atlas back to where the others huddle inside Mr. Drake's protective wall of ice, <<but for now we must deal with this onslaught! Quickly, open your mind and reveal everything that has transpired since you left my sight!>>

As Atlas slides off your back to the ground he falters and lands on his knees, when one of your classmates sticks out a hand to help him up! "I'm Clarissa," she says, smiling.

"I'm Atlas. I can mess with machines."

    "I know," she replies.

Against the wave of Sentinels, the now and future X-Men stand, ready to lay down their lives for each other in the second double splash page of the day!

    Professor X: World's Greatest Telepath.

Iceman: He makes ice. Lots of it.

Remote: That's 'Princess Remote' to most machines.

Bullet: He laughs in the face of momentum.

    Tesla: Human lightning bolt.

    Dragonfly: She flies.

    Atlas: Machine telepath.

Tachyon: You should know by now!

If I had had some more time to work that in it would have been gold, but I've been assuming she wasn't wearing a mask... although even if she was it's the UMF mask that goes with her regular costume... the one she's wearing underneath the UMF suit she got in 2099 that is itself underneath the power armor.

Whew, it's a good thing those suits are self-regulating or else she'd be worrying about heat exhaustion!

Though she's taxed herself beyond the breaking point several times over today, Aino hasn't given up. She couldn't. Her friends needed her. It took crossing three timelines, but she did it, and now she doesn't need to give up.

    She can simply watch.

Tachyon, her powers bottled up for so long, lets loose with a blinding stream of lightning that ignites the air itself and destroys the top half of the lead Sentinel, and behind it Iceman buries the next two in a flood of frozen water vapor that snaps them apart from the inside. Bullet launches himself through the leg of another with a blur, emerging on the other side in a spray of machinery that drops to the ground around him, and as the Sentinel reels, one-legged, he repeats the move, over and over until there's nothing left.

The last two remaining pause for a moment, assessing their plight, but as the combined might of the X-Men raises against them for a second time, two voices call out "Stop."

In the middle of the wreckage, amidst torn up grass and the mud underneath, alongside the sparking, smoking heaps of mutant-hunting robots walk Remote and Atlas. "Don't break these two. We're doing something."

"See, I can just talk to computers because of this stuff," Atlas says, tapping on the metallic plugs that encircle his scalp, "But this girl... she can make them *dance*."

"I always had a problem talking to Penguinel, you know that?" Remote asks. "The language was always so hard. But Atlas speaks it like a native tongue."

"So we had an idea, her and me," he says.

"We're making a computer virus. We're turning these two against Master Mold and sending them back."

"Information warfare at its finest," Atlas says with a smirk.

With that, the two Sentinels look at the tiny figures below them, then turn in unison and utter a single statement before stepping through the portal just as it disappears.

    "ACKNOWLEDGED, PRINCESS."

there's a good chance we can change the world for the better, prevent the pollution wars, and negate that entire timeline from happening. And even if it does, are you comfortable with a company that owns people having access to the timestream? No, the suit stays safe. We'll only use it in extreme emergencies, as we don't want the augmenters to become a crutch on our powers and prevent us from reaching our full potential. But having the extra power in case of subsequent Armageddons is a good idea.
