    222 KB Totemist Quest VII Diarca !!rV8GTu4cyt+ 05/29/11(Sun)21:35 No.15097150
Standing before you is the source of more spiritual power and malevolence than anything you've ever faced. Calling itself Evaleii Myoho, it claims to have made a deal with your Master and the Spirit of the Mountain for a particular child living in your village. If you do not acquiesce to its demands, it will attempt, and very likely succeed, in totally annihilating the village. If you accept its demands, however...

Pierce has silently informed you that Elana is the child that Myoho seeks. Whether this is true or not, and how he came by this information, you do not know. What you do know is that time is currently of the essence, as the raging figure before you grows ever more impatient. You are equipped with the following items.

    > Bound Foci:
    Modi Magni (Ancestral Spear)
    Rock Turtle ( Cloudwalker's Step)
Cordia, Bone Warden (Mirror of True Sight)
    Amal (Amber Pednant Focus)
    Tryd (Charcoal Charm Focus)
    >> Diarca !!rV8GTu4cyt+ 05/29/11(Sun)21:35 No.15097158
You are Osyki, newly promoted Totemist and first line of defense for your village against the rabid Behemoths wandering the land. Your master, the previous Totemist, fell in a battle against a terrible Basilisk Wyrm, leaving the duty of defending your settlement to you. After barely surviving a vicious series of fights against a pair of deadly creatures, you've decided to take a few days off from the hunt and get yourself a little better prepared. Your day has been somewhat less relaxing than you expected, though you did manage to experiment with your Foci and make a contract with Boand, a local Spring spirit, before being rudely awakened by Myoho's entrance.

Myoho has stated that it can feel the girl's presence nearby. Will you give her up for the village, Osyki? Or is it time for something foolhardy, reckless, and exasperatingly heroic?
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)21:44 No.15097247
    Something reckless and heroic!

I don't really have any ideas, though, since we have no idea what this thing is.

...It appears that amongst other things, Evaleii Myoho is a fellow Totemist, if that skull in his hand is any indication.
Perhaps our first move should be to knock that thing out of his hands, assuming it will prevent him from summoning that fuckhuge dragon?
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)22:02 No.15097446
I don't see what we can do but try to catch him offguard by attacking immediately but I doubt that'd work. Logistically we should give Elana up... hopefully we'd be able to pursue but we can't know that he won't harm her... I don't see how we can draw him away from the village either. I'm voting for attacking him.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)22:05 No.15097484
Unfortunately the only options are to comply with Myoho who almost certainly doesn't have good intentions with Elana, or to attack him immediately, before Elana has time to show up. Because Elana would totally do the noble thing and submit to Myoho for the sake of the village/to spare our life. That's why we need to desperately hope that Myoho is arrogant enough to not be prepared for a sucker punch/stab.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)22:07 No.15097499
...Honestly unless his power is a trick of some kind the only tactic other than 'stab him and hope for the best' we seem to have is trying to unbind Modi Magni, which isn't a strategy at all given he hates humans.

That's what I was thinking but he almost certainly is. I'm afraid we may need to admit that we're outclassed here and that for the good of the village we need to give Elana up. We can't be selfish here, we're the totemist.

Giving up our people to malicious entities to spare our village is not something we should ever consider. Better off dead than selling people for safety.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)22:13 No.15097565
    >>15097520
True but... I highly doubt that a being like Evaleii Myoho wants Elana merely as a consort or a meal. The only reason he would have any interest in her is if her presence can help him accomplish some sort of goal, which I would suspect to be bad.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)22:13 No.15097567
    >>15097548
So you'd rather that all or most of the village be dead including ourself and likely Elana than give up our girlfriend?
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)22:14 No.15097581
    >>15097565
That's good then, that gives us a chance to grow stronger and retrieve her. We cannot beat him at the moment and opposing him now will only result in death.

    >>15097581
Unless to accomplish his goal she would serve as a sacrifice. That's a definite possibility.
Whatever power or gift Myoho can get from Elana is something we should prevent. Someone as wicked as he cannot be allowed to gain more power.
    >> Editor 05/29/11(Sun)22:19 No.15097636
We have help on the way in the form of Sylvia, who is pissed at this spirit and looking to take it down.

And we have no reason to honor ANY deal that removes people from our village. There's only seventy-five of them.

We also have a Greater Avatar bound in out weapon.

I say we do the following: Ask Evaleii Myoho when you'll get the girl back. If he does not answer that you'll get her back soon, tell Evaleii Myoho that you're looking for the girl, but she is terrified and in hiding and you will return with her as quickly as you can, could he step outside the village walls please.

Then call Boa and ask where Sylvia is, and that you plan to try and stall this spirit or thing while she gets there as it is demanding to take your people hostage.

Send Amal and Tryd to your master's workshop to find advanced methods of binding spirits in his notes and then scribe the runes when you tell them to.

Go to Elana, tell her to have a look at Evaleii Myoho and see if she can see anything you can't - maybe her special vision will help you out in some way. After that, tell her to hide.

Call Boa again, get Sylvia's response.

At that point we decide whether to engage or not. If we do, our job is to stall until help arrives and the spirits find out how to bind this fucker.

I'm not saying it's something I'd be happy about doing. I'm not even that concerned about ourself in regards to this problem, someone else could assume the position. But what right do we have to sentence the villagers to death in order to save someone who we care for? I'd give Walther up in the blink of an eye to save two people. I wouldn't be happy about it. We need to become stronger so that we can stop this shit from happening but right now I don't think we can.

Well the way I see it, Overwake is dead.

The deal died with him. The village is under our protection now, so we'd be happy to hear him out.

But if he's going to keep killing lesser spirits and yelling then it's our job to keep him polite.

Actually. Is there protocol for this? Did our master leave notes?

Honestly we can probably talk to this guy. We just, you know.

Have to figure out what he wants. And how we can make it conflict as little as possible with what we want.

And if that's impossible get him with the spear. And if the spear's not enough, lure him somewhere, triple bind the spear, and have at him.

We're a player at the table and get to determine any such protocol.

You tell me if you want human sacrifice or hostage-exchange for no reward except promising to leave us alone to be part of protocol.

To me, it sounds like Dane-Geld, and the Dane will keep asking for more unless you don't pay any and break his face in a few times.

Let the word ring forth that no deal will be made that does not favor both sides and grant contentment and benefit, is my position.

Send Amal or Tryd back to search for Overwake's notes. See if they can dig up anything on Evaleii Myoho. Honestly, I'm all for not making a deal with this guy, for three reasons:

    1) We don't know what the hell he *is*.
    2) Overwake's dead, why is he coming *now* to collect on his bargain?
    3) As Boa said, Sylvia's the guardian of these lands. Evaleii's beyond his domain, here.

I propose we stall him out and wait for Sylvia. Basically say that we had no knowledge of this bargain, Overwake's dead, and he needs to clarify what the hell he wants before we start chucking people his way.

You narrow your eyes, keeping the point of the spear between you and Evaleii Myoho, for all the good that will do. You slowly take a step back, nodding.

"Very well." you say, gripping the haft of your weapon with white-knuckled grip. "Give me a moment, and I will search for the girl. It is likely that she is terrified, and so in hiding. Will you wait outside the village walls for me to retrieve her?"

"I will wait precisely where I am, Totemist." Myoho says, its four eyes narrow. "You will bring the girl to me expediently or I will find her myself, and I do not particularly care what or whom I have to go through to achieve my goal."

You bow stiffly to the thing, leaping down from the roof. As soon as you are out of sight of the being, you clasp your hand around the pearl pendant and call out to Boand.

"Boa," you think, your tone urgent, "How far away is the Forest Spirit?"

"I just saw her pass by. She's moving fast. She'll be at the village outskirts in a few minutes."

You glance around, formulating your plan of attack. Summoning Amal and Tryd, you send the both of them to your workshop to rifle through your master's notes on advanced spirits, possibly to rig up and advanced circle of binding.

With a sudden breeze, you can breath again. The spiritual pressure oppressing your every sense lifts with a sudden smell of flowers, and from your left you see a figure kicking up a cloud of dust in its wake. Skidding to a halt in front of you, you can see the spirit of the forest, her long hair rippling in the breeze her own movements have created. In place of a harp, her hands hold an ornate bow and arrow. The looks down at you, her eyes stern.

    "What's going on?"

We are few - every one of us in this village counts, and he asks for our next healer."

You look up to see Sylviannis is a state of muted rage. Her fist shakes with anger as she brings her bow to bear, nocking an arrow in its string.

"Evaleii Myoho is not the spirit's name, Totemist." she says, casting her gaze toward where the spiritual pressure is centered. "It is an insult in the old tongue, inferring that the one you speak to is unworthy of your time. I know the beast now by its presence and its mark. He was a man, once, before his corruption."

    She sighs, shaking her head.

"This is not a being to trifle with, young one. His power is greater than you know."

"I may have something capable of striking a substantial blow." you say, hefting your weapon. At Sylviannis's raised eyebrow, you explain. "A greater Avatar of Wrath, a being known as Modi Magni, is bound within this spear. If I unchained this being, I expect that it could fight this being on even terms."

"That would be exceedingly foolish, Totemist." Sylviannis says quickly. "You trifle with powers you do not know the full extent of. The collateral damage of such a brawl alone would consume your village, my forest, the mountain, and everything else within sight."

Evidently not, as it's been two days and we haven't been granted an audience.

Plus, when we talk to Magni, we're laid out flat on the floor and unable to move. This is not a great position to be in when you're trying to deal with a dangerous presence in your hometown, intent on beating your stupid ass raw and then burning everything to ashes if it doesn't get what it wants.

I say we pick Sylvia's brain and go from there.

We should at least ask about binding slyvia

You can bind the entire spirit, as you did with Amal, if they agree to the terms of a contract that you negotiate. Particularly powerful or influential spirits can split off a portion of their essence to act as their representative, and Totemists can bind that in the stead of the entire spirit." -from last thread

I think Sylvia should stay free. She seems willing enough to help on her own, and restraining her in an item would be counter-productive.

IIRC, we can 'feed' a spirit to another spirit to increase its power. Maybe we could feed the rock turtle spirit to Modi. Or Tryd. What kind of fires could he create with that much power to draw from? Something to consider for later, though.

Ask Sylvia if there's anything she can do or tell us to help us resist the overwhelming effects of his presence. Also ask if Sylvia can call on any allies to come aid us. I think this is a bit of a 'code red' situation. Whore ourselves out to any benign or neutral spirit that will help us put this bitch down.

crap.... I just remembered something. The OP once answered a question about binding human spirits. He said that you can, but it's usually pointless since they don't have supernatural powers, the best you'd get is a talking spirit that couldn't fuel an item. But if someone had a supernatural power in life, that might be transferred over. Jackass probably wants to kill and either bind or consume Elana's soul for her vision abilities.

On a side note, if we had bound the lightning turtle to a bracelet, would could have been charging it this entire time. I don't know if there's a aximum charge to one of those lightning balls. We could have been storing up a killer bolt by now. Alas, hindsight 20/20.

"If you think that you can be convincing, it may be a viable strategy." Sylviannis admits, nodding. "But you must be very careful, playing with fire like that. The slightest mistake will be your last around this being. I do not think it wise, but there are very few good options here."

"What of you, Sylvia?" you ask, glancing over your shoulder. "Do you possess the strength to aid me in fighting this being off? I cannot do it alone, this much I know, but with the aid of a spirit as powerful as you we may have a chance."

"I think that should be a last resort, Totemist." she says, her eyes downcast. "I am not as powerful as I used to be. Time has been unkind to my forest, and though I disliked him, the passing of your master undid a great many useful bonds and bindings. Is the idea of losing this girl so loathe to you? I understand that you need as many in your village as possible, but weigh the cost of life."

"Her loss would mean the loss of our next Healer, of one of our viable women, and of a good personal friend." you say, shaking your head. "It would not be acceptable."

She thinks on this for a moment before shrugging. "If you think that you can bluff this being, do so now. If not, you'll need to think of a way to smuggle this girl away from the village, or to bind this terrible foe."

You glance around at the mention of binding. Amal and Tryd have yet to return, though you suppose the volume of notes they have to rummage through is fairly impractical for expedient information gathering.

Ask Slyvia the old tongue word for Nothing, then let's get to the bluff. I'm thinking we could say something along the lines of this:

"Alright, mr nobody, there seems to be a problem. You see, you're scum. You've worn your greed for so long, you forgot what else it means to be human. Now, take a good look at this guy here. (our spear) This is Modi Mundi, and he is a greater avatar of wrath. And you know what he hates? He hates greed. Specifically, he hates greed in humans and dragons. And you know what I see before me?

A human who got too greedy. Now, I could let you have the girl, but then that would just let you use her power to further your greed. So we're going to make a new deal: Leave, and you walk away unscathed. Stay, and not only will your prize also be sundered, but you yourself will be if not dead, sorely wounded and easy prey for the many beings your greed has surely effected."

He could consume every spirit in the forest, including Sylvia. I'm guessing Elana's sight is a lynchpin to his plans. If he gets her, there'll be no stopping him.

Quick! Ask Sylvia if there is a plant or poison or anything she can do to fake Elana's death. Once he stops sensing her, we just tell jackass that we killed her to keep him from her power. "I'll be nearby, Totemist." she says, nodding. "Best of luck."

You empower the spirit in your boots, surging into the air once more. The being watches you approach, flexing its claws slowly. Your expression is hard as you draw your spear forward, its tip resting a few inches from your enemy's chest. You call to Modi Magni with all your might, holding the Mirror of True Sight in your other hand in a firm grip.

"You felt that, didn't you?" you say, your voice steady for the first time communicating with this monster. "Haven't felt anything like that in a long time, have you? Been safe, thinking you're untouchable. I can tell."

You angle to mirror so that the lying spirit can see its surface, holding back the urge to sneer.

"Here's a thought - I have a Greater Avatar's power at my beck and call, and I have the Spirit of these woods ready to do battle. And I don't think you'll win, but even if you do you'll be good and wounded by the end of it. Your prize will be gone, you liar, you nameless, senseless mass. I've been told what you are, how you betray my kind. You insult me when I ask for your name, the most basic respect that a being can give. I'll not give you what you seek - and if you force the issue, it will be destroyed one way or another."

The twitching of Myoho's claws has become more and more erratic, and you can see two pairs of eyes, each the size of a house, slowly superimposing themselves into the air behind it.

"So to hell with your deal, and to hell with your threats," you continue. "You visit doom on me, but I reflect it to you. And if you don't believe my willingness to lay it all on the line, say the word and we'll go round and round."

You dig your heels in, reaching for the cord binding the White Claw to your spear, just in case. As the solid wave of sound comes to a slow halt, you can see the physical tear in the head of Myoho where the roar burst forth like a torn dam. It stares long and hard at the spear in your hand, its fingers twitching uncontrollably. You can see the skull in its hand begin to glow with a sickly yellow light.

Your spear dances out as time slows, its bladed edge lashing out at the wrist holding the illuminated skull. The blade of your weapon struggles for a moment, as if against some invisible force. Then, with a roar of grinding gears and true rage, the spear forces its way to its mark and bites deep into Myoho's flesh. Though it shows no immediate reactions of pain, the hand holding the skull opens and drops the relic to the ground. You sweep your spear downward as it falls, catching the underside of the draconic bone and tossing it off of the edge of the building. Sylviannis can take care of that. You've got bigger fish to fry.

As your draw your spear back, you feel a push on your right shoulder. Your body spins to the right, just in time to avoid the blast of indigo fire arcing through the space that your head had until very recently occupied. Another shove from an unknown source sends you onto your back, directly beneath a sweeping arc of blue flame. You bring your legs up and spring back to your feet, giving Myoho a cocky grin.

"Your task complete, your purpose well served. Release your holds now, monsters, and find respite in your Totems once more."

For those uninitiated, it would sound like the beginning of a ritual. A few tweaked words can go a long way toward ruining the precise magical formula that most pacts and contracts specify. You spent weeks on end memorizing the proper incantations. Botching one isn't a problem whatsoever.

With a sudden flicker of movement, Myoho has vanished from sight. You hear a sound like leaping electricity as the titanic humanoid flickers into existence above you, jumping back and forth in space as though unsure where it should actually exist. You slide backward, toward the mountain, as you carefully watch the jumpy basta-

Oh hell, where did he go?=
