    How about:
    The Arianus 27th Regiment.
Due to harsh tithe rates, 1/2 of the men and women are forced to enlist at the age of 16.
Due to strict religious customs of the planet, no unmarried or unrelated man and woman may share the same sleeping room or dining space.
Due to these customs the men and women are enlisted into seperate regiments. The men into the even numbered ones, the women into the odd numbered ones.
The men specialize in close-combat tactics developed from popular fighting rings and bouts in their hives. The women on the other hand specialize in ranged attacks due to prohibitions on female contact. This means the women are more often the ones who drive the tanks, man the artillery and act in various support roles.

Seen as an ideal recruiting and training ground by the Schola Progenium, the Arianius regiments are often used as the first assignment for fresh from school Commissars and Stormtroopers.

Its not often talked about in recent times, but nearly 400 years ago Arianus was a lushy, verdant planet whose vast jungles were seen as wonderful resorts for the rich and famous of the sector.
That was until the Cult of the Pestilent Hand ripped open a chaos gate under the most populated hive and thousands of nurglings poured through. Within days anyone not inside one of the sealed off hives was destroyed and the vegetation on the world wilted under the curse of a thousand deseases. Only the intervention of the Dark Angels space marine chapter prevented the total fall of Arianus into Chaos. To this day the Cult continues its activities in secret, both on planet and elsewhere in the sector, forcing the guardsmen of Arianus to be constantly on alert for any Chaos activity.

    >>15086633

    Random chaos aligned group:

Fighting rings and combat are a focus of nearly all levels of hive life on Arianus. Nowhere was that more true than Hive Quateris, oddly named third largest hive on the planet. So popular in fact was it, that it became the only hive to change laws regarding male and female contact, in order to allow greater participation in fights. At the 1473rd annual championship however, the final fight turned sour.
The reigning champion, approaching older age and near obsolescence in the fighting ring, turned away from a faith in the Emperor, and instead, sought out Khorne's favour to win him honour in the ring.
He manifested demonic prowess, and slaughtered his opponent, as well as half of the audience.

The smoking remains of Hive Quateris are a constant reminder to the rest of Arianus of what might happen if they go overboard, and they symbolise what all Arinusians hate most: khorne and his bloodthirsty brethren.

Incidentally, there are a bunch of ways we could take this.
Humorous: The regiment is getting a new Commissar and : 1. A "harem" type situation erupts with all the girls trying to get the dreamy commissar. 2. In a freak mix up, a male commissar gets assigned to the female regiment, while a female commissar gets assigned to the 28th. Shenanigans ensue. 3. After their fairly lenient male commissar leaves for a new assignment, the regiment is told they are getting a female commissar. They are excited until it turns out that the new commissar is much tougher than the last. Eventually they end up serving alongside their old commissars new regiment and persuade him to come back. 4. Turns out that Nurgle has wrested control of periods away from Khorne and is using the extra power to launch a new attack on the sector, can the girls fight off this new incursion despite it being that time of the month??

    Serious:
    1. Any normal 40K scenario really...

Maybe they're a good recruiting point for SoB initiates (if thats how the SoB work? I know fuck all about them) for the women, and the men make good commisariat candidates.

With the way their world has been fucked by chaos, theyre going to be even stronger in their faith in the Emperor, making them all good candidates for either role.

Maybe the children of the Arianius regiments are sent to a Schola after they hit a certain age, as a standard thing? That'd explain a good part of the relationship. Maybe even to a Schola on Arianius?

    >> Commander !!ya3+mb8OWlb 05/28/11(Sat)23:51 No.15087913
    Okay, to sum things up:
Arianus is a Desert Hive world (Need more info.) with a Schola Progenum, and a Monastery. Multiple hives, but surface is mostly desert (with scattered oasis, etcetera, and some surface farms fed by irrigation? x% is water, and the terrain is somewhat mountainous/rugged?)
As a result, the Guard Regiments (Divided by gender) have very good ties to them, and are on good terms with the Sisters of Battle.
Male regiments favor Close combat and Female regiments favor Ranged Warfare, and vehicular combat. Because of Taboos against contact between genders and female contact.
Arianus has had a few close scrapes with Chaos in the past, including the (partial?) destruction of the Biosphere by a Nurglite cult, and the destruction of a Hive by Khornate cultists.
As penance, the Tithe is significantly larger than it should be, but the children of the Guardsmen sometimes (Frequency?) return to Arianus and are educated by the Schola Progenum.

About the 27th: It is an all Female Infantry Regiment, (possibly lightly motorized,) with a preference for Ranged combat. So, probably a higher than average number of Snipers, and weapons teams.

    Writefaggotry incoming:
    Criticism/ideas more than welcome.

It seemed like it had been months since their deployment to the bulwarks around the ruins of Hive Quintillius. Even now, hundreds of years after the Nurglite incursion, the abandoned and decaying hive city still inspired chills in those that looked at it. Part of that was the grand majesty the ruined precipices of the city inspired. Part was the reason they were here. On rare occasion a band of nurglings would emerge from the city, hidden for centuries in some of its many turns and passageways and make a beeline for the nearest populated area, a medium sized township responsible for a fraction of worlds main export, focusing gems needed for lasguns.
Of course, Abby didn't really care about any of that. As far as she was concerned the small enclosure of her sniper position and the dozens of meters of defensive lines she was responsible for might as well have been the open plains. It was her first assignment, stand watch over the decaying monolith along with her squadmates from the 27th, a few Sisters of Battle to observe them, and a quarter mile closer to the city, two squads of the 28th, the 27ths "brother" regiment. After a year of intense training from Schola Progenium candidates, and even more intense scrutiny from the candidates instructors, being out of the academy was a blessing. Even more exciting was the prospect of being around boys, even though they were off-limits and across a well-mined no-man's-land. However such thoughts flew from Abby's head at a sound she had been told she'd likely never hear.

had been told she'd likely never hear.
The rusty, old klaxon's pealed their cry across the defenses, triggered by a watchman in the forward trench. For the first time in 3 years it seemed a group of demons had managed to stumble their way out of the carcass of the city. "Allright girls, take your positions, just like in the drills. We are in no danger back here, so there's no need to be nervous." rang the calm voice of Sister Alexandra. With a hussle of activity the girls complied. There were only 12 of them, but they were determined not to allow any of the enemy through. "Hope you're not nervous, Abs" whispered her spotter Chrissy, "I've done this half a dozen times before, just relax and remember your training and you'll do fine." Abby sighed, Chrissy was probably right, after all Chrissy had helped beat back that Tyranid splinter fleet a couple of sectors over a few years back, and if a Tyranid invasion force didn't scare her, then what were a few lesser demons?

Readying herself, Abby surveyed the forward trenches through her sight. There was no real need to focus, the guardsmen had been more than willing to go out and paint range markers in front of their trenches for the snipers, and she'd had nothing better to do for the last 2 weeks but practice shooting the rocks the 28th had painted. It was at that moment that she got her first look at the Great Enemy. They were vile disgusting creatures, no two alike. Some ran on all fours, others shambled forward on two, and close to the back she could swear there was one with 5 legs, loping with some strange lopsided stride. All told, it looked to be one of the larger groups to emerge from the hive in quite some time, maybe twenty to twenty five puss spewing corpse bags.
    >> Anonymous 05/29/11(Sun)02:56 No.15089481
    >>15089475
Steadying herself from the sight, Abby asked for the first target, Chrissy gave her the closest monster, a bipedal freak with a horn growing, seemingly, from its chin. With only a click in confirmation, Abby pulled the trigger on her overcharged lasrifle. She was greeted with the welcome sight of watching the shoulder of the abomination disintegrate. However her joy was short lived as she realized the creature continued to shamble forward. Chrissy hissed at the sight. "Dang, these things don't like to go down. Give him another round, aim for the head this time." Easier said then done, Abby thought to herself, steadying the gun for another shot. Again the gun rang out with but a click, but this time the results were much more encouraging. The shot hadn't quite hit the head, but with the neck now missing, the demon flopped to the sand regardless.

"Yeah! Bullseye!" Chrissy exclaimed. "Concentrate, ladies!" came the barked reply from Sister Alexandria, "There's more than one down there." Slightly humbled, Chrissy turned back around and continued to deal out targets. Time and time again the lasrifle clicked. Sometimes the clicks signaled the end of a demon's time on that plane, but more often the shots found the hot desert floor. Soon it became obvious that despite Abby and the other sniper's best efforts, at least a dozen of the monsters would reach the first line of defense. No longer wanting to take the chance of accidently hitting on of the men, Abby found her role in the battle relegated to observer.

Her attention though, was as much on the fighting men of the 28th as it was on the demons spilling into their trenches. It was the first time in nearly 18 months since she'd volunteered to become a guardsman that she'd seen a man who wasn't a member of the commissariat and at least twice her age. Seeing these boys, No, Men, her own age, even in these circumstances was a welcome sight. She wondered, was Jonas down there? He had enlisted 2 weeks before she had. They had been nearly inseperable before that, friends since their families had moved to the same level of the spire mere days apart when they were 4. She hurridly scanned the trenches and...YES! He was down there, she'd recognize the brown curls on his head anywhere. It looked like he was rushing to help fend off the attackers, though he appeared to have been in the middle of something. His shirt was unbuttoned and flapping in the breeze as he moved to give himself a clear shot.

Abby's heart was beating fast, she couldn't tell if it was from the adrenaline of the battle or the thought of seeing her childhood friend for the first time, and all grown up at that. However, her ruminations were not to last, though Jonas and two other guardsmen were doing a great job of stopping two of the demons from advancing any further, they had not seen the demon drop into the trench behind them. Letting out a squeak, Abby let her reflexes take over, sighting the gun quicker than she ever had before and drawing a bead on the monsters head. *Click* sounded the rifle. *Splat* went the demon's head. Alerted by the sound, Jonas whipped around to the gory sight of a headless demon toppling over. Smile on his face he turned momentarily towards the sniper tower and waved before diving headfirst back into the fray.

HE WAVED! Did he know it was her? How could he? Did it matter? Should she tell him the next time she..."Abby, girl, what's up with you?" Chrissy's voice interceded on her thoughts. "Girl, you're blushing so hard they can probably see you from space!" "Oh! It's, uh, nothing Chrissy! Really...", "Sure, girl, whatever you say..." Abby just turned back to her gun and smiled. Perhaps this deployment wouldn't be so bad after all.

I'm thinking as a general thing, that every Squad has at least a Designated Marks(wo)man with a Long-las or Needle-rifle. Gas masks might be used as a regular sort of thing to protect the troops eyes and in sandstorms (if the local conditions are the sort to cause them.)

Support for the Gerudo idea, then:

The populace is not indigenous. They're refugees from a planet the people of which resembled (Irish/Scots, whichever is more likely to be redheaded) and was destroyed in a <insert prime foe here> incursion. The refugees, along with the remnant of the Tallarn regiment that held off the enemy, were gifted a new planet. With no other option, the people integrated and adapted to the arid climate, hence the red/auburn hair (considered highly attractive by the Tallarn vets who would help to populate the world) and desert skin tones.

Males are a rarities, which forces the Arianus regiments to be overwhelmingly female. (I figured either the social workings of the planet or the dangerous responsibilities of males would keep their numbers down. Possibly a mix of both and a quirk of biology?)

Just a bit about their tactics, disregard if I derp it up.
Given the vast expanses of the planetary deserts and the verticality of their hives, the Arians (reference to the language group mistaken for a master race by everyone's favorite German?) rapidly took to ranged weaponry. They became renowned in theirs and neighboring systems for their ability to put a slug/lasblast into a target hundreds of meters away, and developed an intuitive sense for finding excellent and ingenius sniper nests, *and* finding those of the enemy.

While not generally regarded as a stealthy regiment (a la the Tanith) they were highly mobile and 'discrete' in their deployments, travelling by night and often taking up positions with minimal show.

I'd say that works, especially the history bits, but we did establish the sort of arrangement with the regimental mix. Although, having the male regiments as at least mildly competent at ranged combat might make sense, although they wouldn't be as dedicated as the Female regiments.
    Other than that, it's great.

iirc we have a desert hiveworld with 5[?] hives.
one was obliterated for falling to chaos. what of the others have we talked about them?

    Elictoris and Inetarti
The smallest of the hives, situated along the equator, they rely on transportation of goods between to other hives as a bases of their economies

So, 2 hives destroyed, leaving 3 Left. On A Desert Hive World. Anyone want to spit out a number for Population, or figure how much surface water there is? (Even with the Biosphere almost going poof a few centuries back, there should be some sort of surface water.)
    >> Commander !!ya3+mb8OWlb 05/30/11(Mon)20:26 No.15107227
I seriously wonder how we keep missing each other.
Still, with three (or more, if we need) hives, the population must be in the High tens of Billions.

I'm thinking Elictoris and Inetarti might only be one hive, separated by a former Sea-Canyon, and one of the few places where it's fairly easy to go between the two regions. In one, we have the ruins of Hive Quintillius, and Hive Quartis, the Mines, and Hive Secundus (we really ought to name these.) On the other, we have Hive Primus. How does that sound.
    >> Anonymous 05/30/11(Mon)22:14 No.15108319
Okay, How bad should the outside conditions be? Just like eternal sand and rocks, with Mesas and other features here and there, or are there the occasional rivers and river valleys where people can live as farmers/herdsmen/whatever? In Addition to the Farming domes and stuff like on Tallarn.

I would say that like most deserts, the vast majority of the water is found underground. The Hives are built over aquifiers the size of oceans (but still heavily rationed and regulated), while the smaller outlying settlements sustain themselves on underground springs.

I'm thinking what ever Surface water there is is split into one of a few categories: So fucking Contaminated, even underhivers wouldn't touch it; remote Oasis/Springs used by Farmers and Herdsman in remote/wilder areas, and the Stupidly wasteful projects of the nobility.
So, if you do find someplace green out there, Crazy Hassan is likely waiting for you.
