To say it is early would be generous. Overly generous, and it shows on the faces of the other commanders in the tent. You, however, are quite energetic, though, this is more due to Jaynes talents than any innate ability or disorder that makes such small hours bearable. "Commander Trentz, your wingless bird will lead our best marksfolk and light infantry in the net of this snare. The three of us will lead the assault, one the wall to prevent our foes from reaching their destination; one the wall preventing them from fleeing home; and the third the assault itself."

"I will prevent our foes from advancing further." Spuria volunteers.

"And as such half of the Legionary battalions shall be yours. Commander Trentz, would you rather the second half of the legionary battalions, or the assault forces and the shattering hammer of our trap?" Quintus asks, his usual pomp somewhat diminished by his exhaustion.

I take it all combat elementalists (the only ones on our side) will be under our command.

I think we can do better as support.

Also, I think Quintus needs to experience what it's like to be on the receiving end of a magical assault, with no magic support of his own.

You think for a moment before responding "I will leave the glory to you, High Commander. My ego is far too large already."

Quintus smiles "Very well then. You will have your own tow Legionary Battalions, my own 121st, your Rangers, Spurias scouts, and an additional unit of your own choosing from our excess of cavalry."

Spuria tilts her head "Will I have my own choice of cavalry as well?" Quintus nods "I will have House Enoch then, good relations are important to maintain."

Quintus turns to face you "And your selection?"

Quintus nods "And now, we move on to the allocation of retinue members. Aside from that, my Aid will be with the medicae, and the rest will be with me for the charge. Commander Vitellius?"

Quintus shakes his head "Now friends, I am certain that commander Trentz has his reasons for withholding that support. Perhaps he needs them all for some outlandish plan. Now, do we have any final additions to the plan, or warnings we would like passed on to the retinue members that will be working together?"

"Commanders, you both told me that you do not wish to employ my combat elementalists beside your own troops on the march here. I attempted to convince you otherwise, and failed. I did not wish to go over the same arguments right before battle when plans have already been set in motion.
"Also, currently my maniple is the only one which has trained in the combined arms doctrine that I am currently refining, per my orders from the Praetors and the Second. Neither of your commands has experience with the usage of combat elementalist teams, and there would be an issue of proper integration and deployment with conventional forces.
"Also, any Uurlanthi arcanists within the convoy would be within range of my elementalist teams, allowing for disruption of enemy elementalist and mage deployment.
"These reasons are why I chose to stay silent about my arcanist corps.
"However, if you're now asking for arcane support, I will be more than glad to offer the use of my combat elementalists, and offer advice in their deployment."

Now it is your turn to raise an eyebrow "Had you wished for arcanist support I would have gladly offered it. However, your previous statements left me under the impression that you wished for no such aid, Commander Vitellius. Additionally, my maniple is the only one trained in the doctrines involving the arcane, and under the orders of the Second Praetorian I was to keep information on my corps of elementalists as secret as is possible until such a time as he determines that it is time to introduce arcane tactics into the Degnarian Legion as a whole. And finally, any enemy arcanists in the enemy supply train will be thoroughly within the range of my own arcanists."

"I stand corrected, and surprised that you were-"

Quintus cuts Spuria off "Commander Vitellius that will be quite enough. We must at the very least give these new tactics and developments a fare chance. My surprise, the cue I believe you acted on, was merely surprise that no additional attempts to sway me to his camp were made by Commander Justinian. Commander Trentz, such harsh words are wholly unnecessary between friends, despite any disagreements that they may have. I thank you for remembering our wishes, however, politeness must be a foremost concern to the Commanders of the Degnarian Legion, as we are to be gentlefolk as well as soldiers. The curtesy must be extended, even if the response is a foregone conclusion. NOW, have we any additions to the plan as it stands? If not, simply, and SILENTLY signal so, and we will be on our way to the field of battle." the High Commanders voice clipped, proper and controlled, even a facade of his usual cheeriness in its tone, however, there can be no mistaking his displeasure at the brief argument.

I don't have any additions to the plan at this time.

Lena should be used to snipe any enemy arcansists; if Uurlanthi arcanist deployment doctrine hasn't changed, they'll have the elementalists in the rear of their fighting formation.

As soon as Lena reveals herself, we'll likely become the priority targets for the supply convoy's elementalists. Our combat teams need to concentrate on preventing their Uurlanthi counterparts from being able to do anything.
    >> No Gods or Devils, Only Mortals 05/26/11(Thu)23:37 No.15065806
Oh, I had a thought: Can we super-armor one of the auto-wagons with whatever extra shields we can tack on to it, that Lena can be stationed in?
She's going to become a prime target, and if our previous battles are any indication, the Uurlanthi will use elven archers to keep up a non-stop rain of arrows on her location.
We need to make sure that Lena has enough cover to be able to weather out that kind of attack, and if possible, counter with her own attacks without being concerned with generating her own force shields.
    >> Pax !uGYNBMPzOs 05/26/11(Thu)23:46 No.15065871
You nod, silent and blank faced. Spuria does the same, though her displeasure and shock are clear. As you make your way from the tent Quintus steps up beside you, and quitly comments "I am surprised that you moved to the decapitating cleaver so quickly my friend. The knowledge was kept to myself, High Commander Lucretius from the Right Fist, and you. It was not necessarily needed for the purposes of winning that petty spat, though I am sorry for my part in it, friend."

You acknowledge the man, and give him your apologies, ignoring some comment about you being more controlled by your passions than he had expected before he is out of earshot. In your command tent, Gaius, Uurist, and Wulf are already looking at the same map. You briefly inform them of your role in the mission "We will have to align our troops in the formation we wish to meet our foes in." the veteran Legionare opines you shortly thereafter, the size and shape of the trench shown to a better scale than in Quintus' tent.

"A basic battle-line would work best for our role I think." Wulf adds.

Uurist nods in agreement "I'm nervous to my role in this fight. It'll be messy at'the best, and bloody as fuck at the worst."

You nod "A simple battle-line will suffice, and we will deploy when High Commander Quintus springs the trap."

"No plan past that then?" Gaius asks.

You shake your head "We dont need any extra plan for this battle my friends." Gaius shrugs, Uurist shakes his head, and Wulf simply nods, the trio quickly dispersing to ensure that the rest of the units you will be commanding are aware of the plan.

At dawn, the entire strikeforce is in place, waiting, and awakening patiently. By early morning you can see the enemy force on the horizon, and by midday they are passing you. The wagons and the bulk of the soldiers are clearly uurlanthi. However, to the fore and at the rear are strangely garbed battalions of elves. Scalemail in dyed and enameled scalemail, in hues of earthen browns, and greens, both deep forest shades, and the hue of fresh spring growth. Each head is covered by a turban, and on each body is a tattoo, invariably a beast of some sort. The formations are square, clearly shielding some important folk. At the flanks of the column are uurlanthi knights, though nothing is in the air. "The Warriors Guild, Order of the Beast, the most influential faction in the Warrior Guild on the mainland." Laelith informs you, indicating the elves at the head and rear of the column. the latter group is now level with your hiding trench, moving at a brisk pace, on edge and seemingly ready for battle, alert, unlike their Uurlanthi counter-parts.

"At least we know where Uurlanth got the instructors to be fielding more sergeants and armored sergeants out of the mass conscription they made than they are.. conscripts." Gauis chuckles at his own comment "Though I suppose they all die the same."

Laelith shakes her head "Commander, where will you want myself, Lena, and the elementalist cadre? And I do believe that Sansa would appreciate to know her orders as well."
    >> GoldPanda 05/27/11(Fri)01:07 No.15066611

Does the Second know about this?

Sansa with our rangers. Tell her to keep a low profile and try not to get sniped. She probably sticks out like a sore thumb with the dwarves.

Laelith on the front lines with the legion units.

That's something I hadn't considered. She should be able to get a few shots off, before she has to switch to maintaining a shield. My only concern is if she can't eliminate whatever mages the enemy might have in those first few shots.

Jayne's cavalry should hold in reserve until the enemy shows a weak point. Those box formations will just eat her Uursans alive if she charges too soon.

I agree with your points, except for Justinian being with the Legionnaires.
Only because we don't know how many earth elementalists are in the enemy force, and we might need to concentrate to prevent them from using their power.
Also, considering that the Guild is here, I think it better if we stay in the back and spam fissures and spikes to weaken them before they make contact with our lines. If Pax's description of how good the Guild military is to be believed, then we're going to be in for a world of hurt.

If they're grouped, then they can be shielded by Lena. Also since we want to make sure that the enemy can't use their own elementalists, we want to keep our own out of the fight and able to concentrate.
The enemy doesn't have siege engines ready, so we don't have to worry about those.
Our main concerns are concentrated arrow fire (blocked by Lena's shield and the elementalists hiding behind shields), and enemy elemental attacks, which is what our guys are going to be disrupting.

You quickly order your remaining retinue members, and dismount Spite, ordering him to wait in the trench until you call for him. The ambush begins as planned, a raging mass of Degnarian cavalry, screaming dwarves, and stinking Lacerta, all rushing the columns flank. It is naught but butchery, the knights not even having enough time to wheel to face the onrushing force. Relentlessley the enemy column is pounded into, High Commander Quintus striding the battlefield just behind the main charge calmly, occaisionaly firing off arrows from his bow, though he always seems to edge closer to the fray, hand leaning towards the claymore strapped to his scale armor, rather than another arrow. You notice that he is a terrible shot as your force falls into position. The Guild elves to the fore form an infantry wedge, and barrel into the blocking force at a full charge. the elves facing you hold their box, their leaders bare arms both tattooed with beautifully stylized wolves, glowing the same hue as Lenas arcane shields, making it clear that his arms are protected, though bare. It is clear that he is waiting for you to make a move, though his soldiers closest to the ambush are constantly shouting to him in their native tongue. The move is yours.

Your siege engines begin pouring fire into the enemy ranks, along with your ranged units. A handful of shots get through, some even felling foes. However, the shields waver, shine, than continue on, undiminished. In response, a torrent of stone spikes rise up from the ground, angle at your forces, still patiently awaiting your orders, and launch forth. Much is to be said about Degnarian armor and discipline, that your men stoically take the barrage. Even more is to be said about Lenas skills, when one considered that he much more fearsome attack your foes made against your own cadre of elementalists, and the force went unscathed. Again the shining beacone of arcane power that is the core of the enemy formation flares to life, and a second slavo of stone spikes rises up high above the battlefield, this time a hearty portion of them directed at your siege engines and ranged batalions. The flight of stone arrows easily high enough to pass over the small field of spikes you deigned to decorate the sides of the road with. Well, thats how you will explain the spikes, instead of admitting your having so massively misjudged the range and spacing of your targets.

You give the order for a measured assault, to loosen formations, then begin to advance. This exchange goes much like the last all things considered. The arcane shield, holding perfectly around the enemy arcanists, and still not seeming any weaker around the other elves you are pitted against. As the wood of one of your Degrian Modified mangonels cries, shrieks and splinters behind you, the crews of the enemy wagons begin to flee, even as the knights on the north flank of the column rally into the Degnarian forces acosting them. Your countryfolk charging headlong into arcane blasts, bouts of flame, and rent earth as willingly as they do steel and flesh. Bloody still cannot begin to define the battle you can see raging behind your own foes, though it is much more even at this juncture. Relentlessly the Uurlanthi arcanists continue to use their powers, even as berserkers and warlords, cavalry and mercenaries get to grips with them, and tear them to bloody shreds.

You signal for your men to continue their advance, despite the continuing barrage of stone arrows. relentlessly they push, not regarding the punishment your foes are distributing to your men. As your bellowed orders hearten your own men, an equal chorus of shouted commands from within the enemy unit seems to counter your determined cries. As another barrage of stone arrows tears into your forces, the enemy forces behind your target begin to break in earnest. Screaming and throwing down their arms as they flee north, the wails of terror joining the mad choir of battle. Steel ringing out against steel, shields splitting, blades bending, armor being rent.

At first the elves opposite your own force hold fast, apparently aiming to bolster their allies morale. then Blackbirds trap is sprung. The wails double in their volume, the horrific cries of the dying and broken twice as horrific in the state Blackbirds tactics reduce them too. Many of the units that have never worked with Blackbird fleeing your own soldiers as they set about their bloody work. Sensing the battles new direction, your opposite barks out a series of orders, and like water the battalions shift, meeting your charge far sooner than you had expected to be engaged. the elves scimitars digging into your soldiers shields, your own men matching every strike, through clenched jaws and with sweat laden brows the best of Degnar square off against the line soldiers of the Guild Lands, fighting to a deadlock. For a moment the enemy arcanists are visible, before pike-wielding armored sergeants envelop the formation. "The enemy leader is amongst the enemy arcanists. He is a shadow mage. Will you confront him, or will you leave the mage to me?" Lenas voice resonates in your head.

"SLAUGHTER THE BASTARDS!!" you exhort your men, slowly working yourself up, signalling for Lena to continue her current task, and Jayne to charge into the flank of the southmost unit of Guild Warriors. The dance of steel before you continues, the seemingly perfect grace of the elves matching itself against the unshakable will of your Degnarian soldiers, forming a beautiful harmony of doom. "He's dangerous." Lenas voice echos in your head, the same tone she takes when trying not to take a side that would offend anyone in an argument carrying into your head perfectly.

Beyond the fight before you, both Degnarians and Uurlanthi are fleeing the Blacktusk Raiders as they methodically and professionally butcher and torture the Uurlanthi dogs as they try to flee. crimson coats the warriors, and crimson is the mud they form as they advance innorexably through their foes. the rest of your soldiers calmly doing their best to emulate the masters of terror dominating that portion of the battle. Diractly across the field from you Spurias forces are taking massive losses, though the arrival of Quintus' cavalry is alleviating their losses slightly. You move to drive earthen spikes into the elves standing against the 454th, but are unable to properly so so, as freindly cavalry is passing through them, greatly restricting your targets. Most of the spikes miss the enemy formation entirely.

As you prepare another salvo, you realize that the enemy arcanaists have only shown their earth elementalists and Shining Mages, not a sign of any others. Either they have no others, or have a plan in the works, and as Laelith incinerates a small group of enemy warriors to your north, you begin to suspect the latter.

Grunting in frustration , you wade into combat, always striking out at your foes, advancing, aggressing. You cut through the elves like a scythe through autumn wheat, batting their blades aside, plunging your own through hearts and heads. Eventually one one them notices your stance and counters it with what you can only assume are a select group of Strikes. And there, locked in combat, you see the enemies true counter assault spring into motion. A group of five elves launch skyward on trails of shadow and darkness, even as a volley of crossbow and balista bolts slam into the ground where they stood. All of the elementalists, save those launching stone arrows at your own forces and the shining mages defending them. the rest unleash their fury on your own forces, shards of ice, gouts of flame, bolts of lighting, and rending winds to slay, maim and deflect your soldiers murderous intent of them. "Commander?" Lena presses, as you remain locked in battle, chains of shadow and tethers of darkness holding Jaynes riders in place, as the elves near them draw their spears and close in on the cavalry.

You signal for an all out assault, as the battle around beyond your corner of it begins to wind towards its bloody end, a battle of elementalists raises your own combat to a new crescendo. Like a bolt of silver Lena sprints ahead, clashing with the enemy leader in mere seconds, her speed on foot matching the pace set by her foes unnatural leaps. Blades of shadow shatter against shining golden shields, the chains breaking around the house Garlian cavalry even as your stone spikes briefly encircle and defend them. Explosions of luminescence obliterate shields of naught but shade, hurling back the mages holding the shields. Lenas whirlwind of death matches your own. Before long you find yourself dueling with the leader of this group of Guild warriors, the cacophony of death and terror offset by his great scimitar impacting your own blade.

"Wolf. How quaint, and such a basic knowledge of it as well. You should be ashamed to even consider using such rough technique on the field of battle." the elf taunts, the mouth of his boar tattoo superimposed on his face to move with his lips. With excellent form and fluidity you press your attack, not rising to the elfs bait. Before you, the insane storm of unnaturaly shifting earth, flame, water and lightning twisting amongst itself, your elementalists already sweating from exertion against the superior number of foes, though it would seem Lena is keeping their wounds unnaturaly healed, and their wills strong. Even as shadow seems to envelop around the girl and she cries out in pain. A burst of light brilliant enough to banish the shadow away follows quickly, and a lance of vengeance pushes the girls foe back, even as your own blade impacts against the brown scale armor of your own foe.

Roaring in wordles rage you redouble your assault, rending the earth with each advancing step, each step heralding another attack leveled at your foe. Unfortuanately, wordless rage and single-minded aggression translate poorly to orders, so your men act on their own initiative. The only place where this goes against what you wanted to happen luckily was Jaynes cavalry detaching to ride down enemy elementalists instead of continuing their rampage to the north. As you continue to beat your foe back as elves fall to the ground around you, you notice the rest of the battle converging on the largest pocket of arcane forces, both loyal to, and arrayed against Degnar. Many stand in awe of the wanton destruction being so casually tossed about by Lena and her foe, the land deeply cratered, scared and blasted. Stray blasts obliterating and decapitating many combatants nowhere near the pair as the dance of light and shadow continues.

This battle was supposed to be easy. There were only supposed to be Uurlanthi in the caravan. You weren't supposed to take heavy losses. And DAMMIT your adopted little sister ISN'T supposed to have to fight eastern elven psychopaths! Everything becomes black and white, your own in white, all of your foes black. Calmly you stride forward, cleaving and stabbing; heads, arms, legs, torsos... your face as dead as when you are at your most furious. Spikes drive into the Enemy leaders calves, then, Lena obliterates his head, simply leveling her open palm in front of his head. Within minutes the rest of the battle ends as planned.

The field is a mess, a bloody, cratered mess. Ultimately there are more Uurlanthi corpses than Degnarian, but it was far bloodier than predicted. Sansa and the other aides are busy counting the casualties, though from the look on their faces the Bill wont be prepared until tomorrow morning.
