642 KB Istvaan's Children, Legio Vereor, Scary Marines Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)22:45 No.15053294
Befitting the rumors of their origin linked to the once loyal Night Lords, the chapter that more often than not finds itself due with the simple title of "Scary Marines" rely on tactics focused on breaking the enemy morale. However, unlike the treacherous Night Lords of Chaos, the "Scary Marines" rely on raw psychological warfare which in itself is rather "harmless", but with continued pressure can win the battle for them before it is even started.

The greatest weapon of all is the simple Fear of The Unknown. The fear of things that stray from the daily norm, the fear of shapeless things that move in the dark, the fear of an impending invisible doom. Man or Xenos, this simple truth holds strong. Where their Night Lord "brethren" use savagery, violence, torture, and other horrors, the "Scary Marines" use their own questionable presence within reach as their greatest weapon of slowly degrading enemy morale.

The "Scary Marines" are known and reviled for their tenancy and great ability to appear and disappear soundlessly. Many stories tell of screams arising in the middle of the night and a single witness finding one of their number slain, circled by great armored men seemingly sculpted out of the shadows themselves, and when the witness tries to get help, these men are gone. Leaving no dropped weapons, no evidence of struggle, and not even a body. Only a puddle of blood, and perhaps a single bootprint.

No place is safe, no place is private, and no defense is strong enough, and when this simple fact has settled itself in the minds of those stricken heretics and xenos, the Marines come forth en masse, coming out of homes and hidden alleyways, as if from the shadows themselves.

Whispered rumours have them to be a loyalist splinter of the Night Lords, though no evidence has ever arisen to support this.

So why are the Emperor's Nightmare being developed and not these bad ass dudes?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)22:46 No.15053305
Weirdest thing. Every time we write stuff down? It goes missing. We had a couple of people look into it but they either stopped talking to us and shut themselves off from everyone, or they just... vanished.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)22:51 No.15053350

Then it's time to roll up our sleeves and get to work. We need a Chapter Master, we need tales of valor and their exploits. We need rules, stats, etc.

It's time to bring Istvaan's Children into the light, so to speak.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)22:53 No.15053366
    rolled 65 = 65

    Well lets get to it.

Do the scary marines have a battle cry?
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)22:56 No.15053393

No. They are utterly silent. This will help give you a better idea of what Istvaan's Children are like.

    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)22:59 No.15053417
Well it doesnt look like they have a rites of battle statline. We could start with that if anyone has the charts.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:06 No.15053472

Agreed. There is pitifully little to work with, so we'll have to start making things up.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:10 No.15053519
Found it on scribd. First table is on why our chapter was originally founded.

    The chart given shows
    1-4 strategic prognostication
    5-6 counter
    7-8 standing force
    9-10 crusade.

Why have the scary marines been founded?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:12 No.15053541
I would have to say that the scary marines are perfect as a Counter chapter. Having them go around scaring the crap out of everyone and everything.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:13 No.15053547

I don't know how to roll with the board, but I do have my dice ready. Rolled a 9, so they were created to fight some crusade somewhere. Let's work out the details.
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:15 No.15053573
    Ahh, the Dice are Dice+XdY

    or Noko+Dice+XdY

    rolling as well
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:16 No.15053584
    rolled 8 = 8

it would help if i typed it correctly
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:17 No.15053595
    rolled 3 = 3

    Rolling as well.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:19 No.15053607
    >>15053547 (continuation)

I believe the chapter should be officially named "Istvaan's Children". It has a nice ring to it, much better than the "Legio Vereor" and less childish than "Scary marines".

With the name though, there might be some relation in people's minds between the chapter and the planet Istvaan V that got fucked up during the Horus Heresy. This might also mean that the chapter could have been founded not too long after the Heresy from Night Lord gene seed?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:19 No.15053624
    rolled 3 = 3

So with a 3,8, and 9 our options are Standing force, Crusade, or Strategic Prognostication. Which one sounds the most fitting for the scary marines?
    >> Anonymous 05/25/11(Wed)23:22 No.15053657
    rolled 3 = 3

Well the dropsite massacre happened on Istvaan V This leads me to believe that there are 4 other planets by the name of Istvaan in the same system. Perhaps one of those would be the chapters homeworld?
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:23 No.15053671

Strategic Prognostication sounds good. From what is already written about them they seem to be a special forces chapter excelling in infiltration, stealth, and psychological warfare.
    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:26 No.15053705
    rolled 45 = 45

Strategic Prognostication it is! (also adopting a name.)

The next table decides when the chapter was founded. Its a lot to write though, but the roll is 1d100 and ill will write out the results.

    rolled 73 = 73

    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:33 No.15053781
    rolled 35 = 35

hehe, between the two of us, our options are

45 - 37th millenium, after the culmination of the reign of blood.

73 -40thmillenium, as the imperium slides into the age of waning.

after the reign of blood, the children of istvaan could have been created as a prevention measure alongside the ordo hereticus which was created at the same time if my memory of fluff serves me right.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:36 No.15053818

37th millennium it is then. Sounds about right with the creation of the Ordo Hereticus.
    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:39 No.15053843
allright then, going with the 37th millenuim, now we determine our progenitors.

Do we wish to go along with them being a loyal successor of the nightlords? If so then we can ignore the rolling chart as that is not on it.

If not however, we need another 1d100. Im all for them being nightlord successors, definitely be interesting.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:41 No.15053870
Agreed. Let's stick with the Night Lords as their progenitor.
    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:44 No.15053891
    rolled 2 = 2

allright next up is Genestock purity.

    this one requires a 1d10
    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:44 No.15053901

    Alright, here we go.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:46 No.15053917

Nah, it's fine. We're making good progress.
    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:47 No.15053929
    your roll makes more sense.

    our options are
2 = the genestock is pure.
6=A new generation. Attempts have been made to breed out real or percieved flaws in the progenitors gene stock. Perhaps trying to hardwire loyalty?
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:50 No.15053964

Ah yes, that's perfect. That are a successor chapter to the Heretical Night Lords, so a few tweaks to the gene seed to ensure loyalty would be a really feasible scenario.
    >> Aserion 05/25/11(Wed)23:54 No.15054017
    rolled 1 = 1

    Next up is Codex Demeanours,

Another 1d10 roll on chapter characteristics.

although im partial to no mercy no respite.
    >> Godwyn 05/25/11(Wed)23:56 No.15054040
    rolled 3 = 3

Sounds about right, but let's see what we get and move from there.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)00:03 No.15054117
Actually, looking at the table, I see:

See, But Don't Be Seen (The Chapter understands well the value of maintaining a silent, unseen vigil on the foe, striking only when his target is at its weakest and most vulnerable)

Which is fitting, but No mercy, No respite is also good. Hmm, tough choice.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:04 No.15054121
    rolled 3 = 3

HAHA Your roll is no mercy no respite.

    Options are
1= swift as the wind. The battle brothers of the chapter may excel at rapid strikes and lightning raids, but the trait extends to every facet of character. They are quick to anger as they are to jest. They can be impatient but display great personal initiative. While not rash or foolhardy such battlebrothers believe in the value of immediate action.

3=No Mercy, No Respite! these battlebrothers have no concept of defeat, and would rather die than accept that once battle is joined it will not be won. They are stubborn in the face of adversity, and are capible of awe inspiring feats of courage. On occasion, some battlebrothers have been known to ignore secondary objectives, somtimes to the detriment of the larger plan, and some have even been known to ignore orders from higher up on the chain of command when serving alongside other forces.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:05 No.15054134
    rolled 10 = 10

Well, now I know not to type out everything since you are looking at the table as well.

See but dont be seen seems to fit the chapter well.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:09 No.15054165
    rolled 6 = 6

So the question becomes, do we want to go with the No mercy no respite, or take see but dont be seen?
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)00:09 No.15054170

Let's stick with See, But don't be seen. Normally I don't like to cherry pick, but we already have a model for what the chapter is like. Right now we're all about filling in the details. Fleshing them out, you know?
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:13 No.15054211
    rolled 5 = 5

next table is Geen Seed Deficiency, and chance of gene seed mutation. This comes down to when the gene seed of the night lords was taken. If It is some rare stock before the heresy, then I would say that it is on the level of ultramarine purity other than the Night lord changes. (eyes change to black, skin changes to very very pale.)

However if its geneseed taken from disloyal night lords, It is noted that they remain suprisingly pure, but is still lower on the level than that of imperial fists. (about a 20 to 30% chance of mutation?)
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)00:18 No.15054254
    rolled 6 = 6

Sounds about right. Let's go with post-heresy Night Lords since the gene seed has been tweaked to ensure loyalty, as mentioned earlier.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:22 No.15054290
    rolled 8 = 8

well with a roll of 5 and 6, it means that each new battle brother has a 20 - 30 % chance to lose the function of one of the zygotes.

    Looking up a list.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:23 No.15054303

    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)00:30 No.15054364

Ahah, this one could be good. It has the best potential for why the Chapter is silent and operates in the dark. Might I suggest

    Oversensitive Occulobe
    Disturbing voice?
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:32 No.15054383

    1 Secondary heart
    2 ossmodula
3 Biscopea (one of the organs that gives the space marine such tremendous strength.)
    4 Haemastamean (same as above)
    5 Larramans organ
    6 Catalepsean node
7 preomnor (helps against ingested poisons)
8 Omophagea (eating things give space marines insight on genetic memory)
    9 Multi Lung
    10 Occulobe (Grants Heightened senses)
11 Lymans ear (same as above)
    12 Sus-an Membrane (Suspended animation)
13 Melanchromic organ (contributes towards toughness)
14 Oolitic kidney (contributes against poison/toxins)
15 Neuroglottis (detect poison by taste
16 Mucranoid (helps against temperament extremes
    16 Betchers gland (spit acid)
    17 Progenoids (Gene Seed)
18 Black Carapace (allows interface with power armour)

Chapter Cult, eh? That could have a few interesting implications. I like it.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)00:44 No.15054507

    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)00:47 No.15054530
So going with Faith in suspicion, with arm of the imperium does out chapter refuse to fight with? I'm leaning towards the ecleisiarchy. They caused the reign of blood and perhaps the Children of Istvaan watch them more than anyone else?
    >> Anonymous 05/26/11(Thu)00:48 No.15054536
Faith in suspicion sounds a lot more in tune with the chapter's motif. Scary marines even scare each other - you have to know fear in order to instill it in others.

26, 3, 35 = Solo (follows parent chapter guidelines for combat) Squad atack, (same as above) Squad Defense. Courage under Fire

Should we try and determine how the Night lords would react?
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)01:54 No.15055248

I don't have that bit of the chart in front of me, so you can choose which would best suit this chapter.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)01:59 No.15055300
Not many to choose from that reflect what we want.

Next Chart is Chapter specialty restrictions, and equipment.
The roll for both is 1d100, but im going to go and say that since they have such jaded view of the ecleisiarchy, they do not have chaplains.

    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:03 No.15055345
Agreed. No Chaplains. Special equipment, I'd say Modified weaponry (suppressed bolters)
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:06 No.15055365
    rolled 34 = 34

Sounds good. Next up are the Chapter Beliefs. 1d100
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:07 No.15055371
    rolled 77 = 77

    rolling for beliefs.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:09 No.15055383
So either Revere the Primarch, unlikely since they are loyalists, or a Death Cult.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:10 No.15055399

    Death cult, for sure.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:14 No.15055448
    rolled 1 = 1

Next up is Chapter status, How many of us are there? 1d10!
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:16 No.15055474
    rolled 8 = 8

    Here we go
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:18 No.15055504
    rolled 4 = 4

We are either endangered and not many, or at nominal strength as the codex dictates.

    quite a difference there.
    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:21 No.15055529
    rolled 4 = 4

The fluff doesn't mention anything about the chapter's actual strength. I think we should just mark it down as "unknown" unless we absolutely must have a number. If which is the case, I say Under strength.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:23 No.15055552
Sounds reasonable. Next up are friends and enemies of the chapter. I would say that for friends, it should be the ordo hereticus, inquisition. and for enimies, either the ecleisiarchy, or the orks to reflect our chapter hero. Both take a 1d100 for rolls though.

    >> Godwyn 05/26/11(Thu)02:27 No.15055592

Agree for Ordo Hereticus as a friend. I think Orks would be the more dangerous enemy for the Istvaan's Children. Would also make for more interesting fluffy bits.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:29 No.15055621
and that is it. The rest is livery, names, and custom abilities.

Im going to put the thread up for archive, have to go to sleep.
    >> Aserion 05/26/11(Thu)02:32 No.15055646
