    'Sup /tg/, I'm going to start collecting a new Blood Angels army. However, I think a custom descendant chapter is cooler than using stock BA, so, do you fancy creating a chapter with me using the Rites of Battle tables ? Only the progenitor is fixed, the rest is subject to you.

    I'll need 1d10 to know why our chapter was founded.

    He's a Battle-Brother from the 7th company, 1st squad.

    He led his Chapter in glorious battles throughout the galaxy, slaying many of the enemy's champions. In the end, he was killed by an Assassin on the field of battle. Because of this, the Chapter harbors hatred towards the Oficio Assassinorum.

    Our chapter is a Blood Angels descendant, of unknown founding, who attempted to purge the Blood Angels gene-seed of the flaws. Because of this, the chapters hates Xenos with a passion. Their Battle-Brothers are known for their remarkable toughness and flexible approach to warfare.
    The principal figure of the Chapter is a battle-brother from the 7th Company, 1st Squad, who slayed a great deal of the enemies of the Imperium's champions. Knowledge is power
    I think it's how the skills of the battle-brother advance throughout the game.

    Ok, recap.
    Our chapter is a Blood Angels successor, of unknown founding, which resides in an Ice world. The chapter was created as a means of reinforcing the Imperium's presence in the sector.
    Instead of following the steps of its progenitor chapter, the chapter tried to purge the flaws in the BA gene-seed, and this resulted in the chapter exhibiting the same flaws as its progenitor chapter (both the Red Thirst and the Black Rage), but also a tremendous hatred towards xenos. Changes on the gene-seed also have given the battle-brothers greater endurance than the average Astartes and ease to adapt to different combat situations.
    The Hero of the chapter is a Battle-brother from the 7th Company, 1st squad, which struck down many of the Imperium's foes' champions before being struck down himself by a bullet shot by a Vindicare Assassin on the battlefield. Due to this, the chapter also shows a remarkable hatred towards the Oficio Assassinorum and its operatives.

    The chapter strays from the Codex in that it doesn't have Librarians like regular Codex Chapters. The Chapter also shows esoteric beliefs involving shamanic and prehistoric era rituals (cannibalism as well ?).
    The Chapter favours a fighting style (still to be decided, I think Halberds would fit and be cool, too) and favours Terror tactics to win its battles, demoralizing their enemies striking down their leaders and showing grisly trophies.

    The Chapter holds a special grudge with a Chaos Daemon (still to be decided which and why).

    So, we have to decide.
    -Which fighting style do they prefer.
    -Name of the Chapter. Suggestions so far :
    ++Brotherhood of Titans
    ++Brotherhood of Stone
    ++Bone Carvers
    ++Granite Titans
    ++The Grey Clan.
    -Name of the world.
    -Friends of the Chapter.
    -Define "Esoteric Beliefs". (Shamanistic is cool in my opinion, but let's try to make them sound not like Space Yiffs.)
    -Battle Cry.
    -Colours of the Chapter.

    So far the chapter is a bit strange, Space Ice Cavemen which favour Terror Tactics and do shamanistic rituals.
    On a second thought, that's actually pretty cool

    Sons of the Neolith/Neolithic Sons
    the Brotherhood of the Megalith was a good idea, but I kind of like the simplicity of "The Megalith."

    related words: dolmen, menhir
    >> Technomancer 05/20/11(Fri)23:14 No.14997330
    using the term "neolithic" doesn't make sense in 40k.
    and Dolmen and Menhir have too many celtic connotations.

    Using the term "brotherhood" accentuates their hermetic/esoteric aspect, while still being applicable to a primitive society.

    40k as a whole doesn't make sense, I fail to see how neolithic wouldn't either. Eitherway it was just a suggestion given the apparent stone age theme you all were going for. Also Megaliths have a big Celtic connection too, so I wouldn't be so quick to rule out dolmen and menhir as words you could use, but again, they were only suggestions.

    maybe something with slabs, then.

    But Megalith is a greek generic term for any big stone. Technically, menhirs are megaliths, but menhirs and dolmens, if I'm not mistaken, describe something that's specifically celt. Not Megaliths.

    40k may not make much sense, using the term "Neolithic" for guys who use advanced futuristic technology, and probably did a few thousand years before still makes me go "wtf".

    >> Shock 05/21/11(Sat)10:18 No.15001591

    I'm likin' this.

    Also throwing my support behind the chapter being cannibals. We got into a bit of a debate on the subject with the Abyssal Jaws (who are also cannibals). It really isn't uncommon for Spess Mahreens to eat Human flesh; even the Imperial Fists do it. The only reason the Sons of Malice got in trouble for it is because they ate an Inquisitor (who in all fairness, was a complete dunce and knew nothing about Spess Mahreens or their rituals and decided to attack them for it)
    >> Anonymous 05/21/11(Sat)10:21 No.15001610
    Yeah, but also, cannibalism is a standard practice for Malal-worshippers, so it's a bit more than a genuine tradition for Sons of Malice.

    Maybe the Brotherhood's cannibalistic practices could be more... refined and ritualised, but also more official and well-integrated in their culture: they don't eat their enemies on the battlefield, but bring some corpses back, cook them and eat them during rituals. Or something similar.
    >> Shock 05/21/11(Sat)10:36 No.15001698

    Yeah, I agree with you there. I can picture it being a cultural thing they adopted from their planet.
    >> Anonymous 05/21/11(Sat)10:47 No.15001758
    Or maybe something far more ambiguous: in most primitive societies living in harsh conditions, cannibalism is a taboo, especially with north-american/groenland populations (that's why you have legends of men turning into wendigowak after eating human flesh)

    we should subvert this in some ways, but I'm not sure which ones.

    They tried to eradicate the mutations in their geneseed, and it failed. Perhaps that instead of the usual vampire dynamic that most BAs have, we could tie it to the Wendigo legends and to popular caveman clichés. This means that, as they see themselves as already cursed, they believe that consuming human flesh helps them control the Black Rage/Red Thirst and to turn it into something more positive =>mystical battle trance, death company and everything, merging with the dead as you absorb their flesh (then maybe endocannibalism rather than eating enemies) and preparing yourself to join the spiritual essence of Sanguinius and your peers.
    >> Shock 05/21/11(Sat)10:56 No.15001814

    How about they actually loath cannibalism? Perhaps they see cannibalism/blood drinking as the reason for the Red Thirst/Black Rage and as a result try to distance themselves from it. When a marine (inevitably) falls to either one of the curses, the chapter believes that the marine fell because he obviously fell to temptation and munched on someone behind the rest of the chapter's back.

    >> Anonymous 05/21/11(Sat)11:55 No.15002229
    >But we have to make this detail relevant.

    Fair enough. How about this: the chapter's isolated location in the Halo Stars has bled over into their having a profound emphasis on the value of secrecy (in fact, this is why the founder chose this place for the fortress monastery) and the spiritual importance of privacy and the value of voluntary disclosure of information as an act of respect and trust. This leads them to be very discrete in their treatment of other Astartes, including the DA/DA-successors, who trust them (as much as they can anyone) because the Brotherhood once captured a Fallen, a Captain no less, and turned him over to the Unforgiven in stasis without ever having questioned him in any way.

    Also, if we are going for tribal here, let's make the Chaplaincy be called "The Lodge" and the Reclusiarch "The Lodgemaster".
    >> Anonymous 05/21/11(Sat)11:59 No.15002257

    OK, some tribal societies have all male religious groups that are just called "The Men's House" or something similar, since their language is too simple to have umpteen words for a building people live in. >Don't the Dark Angels fucking hate cannibalism though? Pretty sure I remember reading some fluff where they refused to work alongside the Flesh Tearers. I suppose that because of the Fallen hand over, along with the chapter being less "RIP AND TEAR", the DA might like them though.

    Let's just have it that the Bros. are cannibalistic towards Xenos, as a matter of course - eating the heart of a mighty foe is considered a way to ingest his power and knowledge, making man's forces more powerful for the next battle. Humans, however, are only taken if they volunteer - maybe old decorated veterans from the homeworld's PDF often offer themselves when they are too old to fight anymore as a last act of devotion and so their own knowledge and experience will be absorbed by the omphaegea of the Bros. and therefore become one with the doctrine the next generation of PDF trainees receive.

    Not sure about eating xenos, but why not. This would be the "dark secret" they share withe the DAs.

    But I'm still more inclined towards sallies.
    Indeed, to detail a bit more about their beliefs, I suggest: They are each engaged on a quest to ascend to godhood with the Emperor. for them, the world is not "everything has a soul, wolves are our equals...", but quite the opposite. It's all about evolution. primordial forces becoming beasts becoming men becoming marines becoming gods. They are regarded as under-evolved, dammit. By recycling their environment, learning to master it (sculpting stone, carving bones, killing beasts, eating men) they learn to master themselves (hypno-conditionning) and slowly become more than what they were previously. and there we go, 2001 reference, with cannibalism.

    The Megalith, being incredibly ancient, durable and unchanging, is to them some sort of anti-emperor that they chose to inhabit, to master and to use, but still revere as a material equivalent of godhood.

    Well, there's no reason they can't be bros with two chapters. How about the Sallies being pals with them because they 1.) simply tend to care for civilians more than other Astartes do and 2.) have a fascination with fire as the source of life and warmth in their Chapter cult that makes them naturally interesting to someone who has Vulkan as a gene-father?

    >Indeed, to detail a bit more about their beliefs, I suggest: They are each engaged on a quest to ascend to godhood with the Emperor. for them, the world is not "everything has a soul, wolves are our equals...", but quite the opposite. It's all about evolution.

    Hrm. That has obvious potential but it sounds almost Chaotic. Warp is all about change and power... Might make a good chapter vulnerability; they can grow blinded to the source of the superhuman power they seek; are they communing with the Emperor through their Primarch Sanguinius or with Tzeentch? On the other hand, if they stay loyal, they get access to some of the faith powers of the Sisters?

    I like the totem idea...you could do carved or painted pillars on the packs instead of normal banners. In fact, plagiarizing several primitive cultures could be cool for this: Inuit, Mongol, etc.

    Rather than tusks...tusks everywhere! how about relegating the beastial shit to heavies, elites and characters and using general tribalware for the brothers? decorative-like...bone armor, coarse woven fabrics...the North American tribes are good for that, as are the more prolific South American tribes.
