The year was 1995, but no longer! Thrown into the past and robbed of her time-slowing powers, teenage mutant Aino Virta must struggle to find a way home in... TIMELOST! part 1

"Incredible!" Professor Xavier says as he leans back in his wheelchair, holding his chin thoughtfully. "You claim to be a student of mine from the future, a future in which my students Scott, Henry, Robert and Jean are teachers here at the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters! As astounding as that may seem, you furthermore claim that you were cast into this time through a rift created by mutant-hunting robots - and those same machines had just slain a time-traveling Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four!*"

"Aw, she must be lying, Professor!" the brown-haired teenage boy - youngest of the other teenagers present - proclaims, crossing his arms over his chest. "That story's too far-out to be real!"

"No, Bobby, I fear she is indeed telling the truth!" he responds as he raises a hand to silence the boy. The Professor looks at you and says, "No doubt this is why you allowed me to mentally scan your mind to verify what you said! You are a mutant like us, though according to what I see in your mind, before his death Richards used a device that nullified your powers, as he feared that if left unchecked they would create chaos throughout time itself!"

"If I may interject, Professor," a broad-shouldered young man asks, raising one thick finger, "perhaps I might offer a suggestion?"

"Of course, Hank, though it must wait until after I have formally introduced our guest." As the Professor gestures, his students stand at attention, allowing you all to observe each other! "Aino Virta, codename Tachyon, this is Hank McCoy, known to us as the Beast! Bobby Drake, nicknamed Iceman! Slim Summers, our human Cyclops! Warren Worthington the Third, who is called the Angel! And Miss Jean Grey, known as Marvel Girl!"

[*It's true! All that and more happened last ish! -Prof]

"Now, Hank, what was it you wished to say?" Professor Xavier asks, and as he does so you realize that the student speaking to him is a young Dr. McCoy - though lacking the blue fur and fangs you've come to associate with him, instead possessing only abnormally large hands and feet!

"It was just idle speculation, but perhaps Dr. Reed Richards, that is, the Reed Richards of *our* time, might have something to add to this discussion?" Hank asks. "After all, if what Aino says is true - and I have no reason to doubt the veracity of your mental assessment, Professor - Dr. Richards may be the only one who fully understands what has taken place."

"Perhaps," the Professor says, lighting a pipe and drawing on it. "Reed Richards is well-known as the finest scientific mind of our day. However, Miss Aino may not wish to visit him, considering the nature of their last encounter."

"Hmph!" Jean says, folding her arms. "All this trouble for a grade-school stowaway!"

"Grade-school?" Bobby retorts. "She's almost as old as I am!"

"That isn't saying much," Jean replies, turning her head to the side. "You *are* the youngest out of the five of us - the only one who's not at least seventeen!"

<<"Enough!>> the Professor says telepathically. <<We will let Aino decide her next course of action. You are of course welcome to stay here at the School for as long as you wish,>> he directs to you.

So, you chronologically maladjusted mutie, what's the plan?

You have been sent to the past for a reason... to kill Gary Gigax so Chainmail doesn't catch on, the Lord of the Rings movie never gets made and /tg/ doesn't exist in the Future so neither Mutie Quest nor Aino had ever existed in the First place, therefore nullifying any Temporal Disruptions! Get to work.

"I would very much like to speak with Doctor Richards, and Professor McCoy... I'm sorry, Mister McCoy. I would very much like to regain the use of my powers before doing anything else. Now, we know mutant powers can be nullified or disabled. Anything that can be done can be undone, and anything that can be broken can also be fixed. We just need to figure out HOW my powers were disabled in the first place, and do the opposite. Don't worry, for the sake of the Time Stream, I'll try to avoid telling anyone too much about the future, or about future technologies. Time travel is a popular subject for Science Fiction in the 1990's, and I think I know enough not to accidentally prevent myself from being born."

Try to avoid doing anything that will affect the timeline too drastically. We don't know yet how resilient the timeline is to change.
Watch out for anyone that might come through Time after us - there was a rift, so someone else might go through it.
    Tall to Mr. Fantastic.

A question for the internal monologue: What is most ethical in this situation:
To alter this timeline as little as possible, and go back to our original place as soon as is practical
    -or-
To abandon our original timeline, and use our knowledge of the future to make the world we've been sent to a better place?

See if we can get a chalkboard or a white board and order our thoughts on it.

OK, what do we know about the device that took our powers?
1: Man portable. pistol sized. But that doesn't mean much when dealing with Fantastitech.
2: Yellow energy beam. Induced extreme pain and nausea.
3: Power loss was instantaneous, not gradual, so it did not introduce any form of chemical, virus, or nanotechnology into our body. So we can rule those out.
4: It's not a persistent energy field that's countering our powers, as there's nothing to maintain it, so it has to have been a static alteration to part of our body.

We're going to need a DNA test on ourselves, and compare it to other X-gene-active individuals to figure out how we were changed. Given the pain, dizziness and nausea from the discharge, I think we're going to need to look at our brain. There's a good chance that whatever was done to us was a type of brain damage to prevent us from accessing our power. It's still there, but we can't trigger it, like a paraplegic.

Aino is not the sort to give up once she gets an idea in her head, practicality and even possibility be damned, and given that things were approaching a Bad End last time we were in the present, she's probably a bit focused on getting back.

On the other hand, when she realizes she has as much time as she needs to get back...

"Perhaps not *our* future," Hank says, adjusting his glasses. "According to Dr. Richards there may be many futures occurring at the same time."

Outside the car, buildings pass by as you enter New York City, and though it's only been a few weeks since the last time you were here the architecture is decades out of date! Traffic is sparse compared to last time, and as you pull up in front of Four Freedoms-

"Four Freedoms? Never heard of it!" Warren says. "This is the Baxter Building!"

As you look out the car's window and up at the building, you see in place of the gleaming skyscraper where you first met Reed Richards stands an ordinary looking apartment building, thirty-odd stories high and capped with a five-story ultra-modern facade!

agreed. The mutant-hunting robots are still built by the same types of people who, a hundred years ago, sold guns to the KKK, or the IRA. Humans have always hated what is different, and they've always been opportunistic enough to exploit any advantage they can for their own purposes. Technology just provided better advantages.

"Wow, look at that," Bobby says as you roll the sleeves of your UMF suit up, the fabric barely increasing in thickness thanks to its remarkable properties. "You can't even tell you're wearing it!"

The six of you walk toward the building, and as you approach the others step aside while Warren opens the door to allow Slim and the Professor to enter. After he pushes the Professor's chair inside Bobby pops back up and says "I wonder if we'll get to meet the Human Torch! He's almost as young as me!"

Instead of the chrome and steel lobby of 1995, the Baxter Building's interior is a simple apartment lobby with a pair of elevators! Another elevator stands apart from the others, but it does not appear to have a control panel, but as you walk past it the doors open and a tall, lanky man emerges!

"Ah, Professor Xavier! Welcome to the Baxter Building! And these must be your students. Please, step inside! This is the express elevator to our headquarters atop the building, usable only by myself and my companions."

As the elevator quickly rises to the top floors, the Professor again contacts you telepathically! <<Aino, if you wish to speak to Dr. Richards alone, you may do so.>>

I don't know how much Proffessor Xavier explained to you, Doctor Richards, so I'll start from scratch. My name is Aino. I will be born in 1979. I am a mutant. My power was to temporarily alter the flow of tachyons in a limited area around myself, 'slowing time' from my perspective. In 1995 I will attend Xavier's School for the Gifted. The day I was scheduled to begin my summer internship, with you, incidentally, a time traveler appeared, claiming I would cause great harm to the future, and proceeded to shoot me with a device I believe you developed, or will develop. It has removed my powers, or my ability to access them. The traveler himself was subsequently killed by a time-traveling automaton designed to execute any individual who damaged the time stream [the sentinel proclaimed that [sycho-reed was 'wanted for causality violations' so this isn't a stretch] or possessed dangerous abilities. I was attempting to reconnect to the source of my powers when the time-rift transported e to this time period, into Professor Xavier's study.I would very much like to regain my powers and return to my original time-line, so I do not upset my past or your future unduly. I have a variety of hypotheses that need testing, and since you are the foremost expert on this type of quantum physics, I have come to ask for your help. The Professor can vouch for me and confirm my story."

"I see," Dr. Richards says, as you finish describing your ideas worked out with the future Dr. McCoy on the nature of tachyons. "Despite your age and the outlandishness of your story I believe that you are indeed from the future. I have recently begun work in the field, and what you say confirms my experiments."

With that he turns, stretching an arm across the room to retrieve a device - and your heart leaps for a second before you realize it bears no resemblance to the pistol-like machine that stripped you of your powers. "Fascinating," he says, waving it at you and monitoring the results. "You say you are a mutant with the power to manipulate time particles. I believe I understand why your strange power no longer works!"

He stretches his free hand out to pluck a spare piece of chalk from the tray below the board and quickly begins writing his own formulas! "It appears that the timestream surrounding you is somehow out of synchronization with everything around you. This may be the cause for your headaches and fainting spells when you attempt to control it - almost as if you were trying to receive one radio station while tuned to another."

"I may be able to create a device that will reorder the timestream around you, thus enabling you to use your mutant power again, but I will need your aid..."

Let's see how this goes... roll a d100 to determine the effectiveness of this machine! To roll, put noko dice 1d100 in the email field! Highest of three rolls decides!

At that moment, the Professor and the others re-enter, surprised to find you behind the glass enclosure!

"Oh," Jean says, "Are you going to start it now?"

"Yes, we've only just completed it," Dr. Richards says, stretching his arm out to pull down a thick lever. "When I activate this device, the timestream around Aino will reconfigure itself to match the time around it!"

The teenage students clutch each other as a humming fills the room, and with a jolt of energy a glow surrounds you, bombarding you with strange rays! You feel the sting of being cut off from the timestream begin to lift, as awareness of the tachyons around you begins to seep back into your mind, when suddenly the glow surrounding you flares and shatters the containing glass!

"No!" Dr. Richards shouts! "We've made a terrible error! The timestream surrounding you wasn't merely scrambled - it was attuned to the time in which the scrambler was made!"

"What does that mean?" Slim shouts.

"It means - Aino is being pulled through time to some other when!" Dr. Richards says as he struggles to shut the machine down, but too late, for his vision is eclipsed by the bright electric-blue gap in reality that you've seen before - that brought you here! Again you are hurled end over end, as reality falls apart around you, plunging you into the confusing realm of nothingness! For what seems like an eternity you drift, as strange flashes shapes flash past, and then -

    *THUD*

You land with a loud impact onto a pile of cardboard boxes, in a trash-filled alley. Even though it's dark outside, you can see lights from tall buildings that rise above the walls on either side of you. A moment later your eyes adjust to the darkness and you begin to notice ... strange things. That piece of scrap metal next to the trash bin almost looks like a robot of some kind, and the ripped and faded poster affixed to the wall is for a band you've never heard of. There's an empty box next to you that says "Synthia Home Plastic Surgery Kit" emblazoned with a picture of a smiling woman, and underneath it is an empty plastic bag of something called Soy Chow.

When you look back up, you catch sight of a familiar building, and your spirits rise as you realize you're back in your own time!

But then you notice the buildings that surround and dwarf Four Freedoms Plaza, and the giant billboards with holograms that jut out into the air, and the steady drone of car-sized vehicles flying overhead in long three-dimensional lanes.

A closer look at the poster for the "Cyber Slaughter" concert claims they'll be playing at the Alchemax Stadium on January 1, 2099, and you realize you're not out of the woods yet.

As you pull the picture of the teenage Johnny Storm out of your back pocket and stand there in your vintage - moreso now than ever - clothing, you think to yourself, What now?"

Not sure...if the plaza still stands, it does so as either a museum or a base of operations, maybe the FF of today can still help, and if not, we can freeze time long enough to get the stuff we need out of such a museum to get out of trouble.

You pick up the Synthia box and toss it into the air, thankfully alone in the alley, and as it reaches the height of its arc you squeeze your fist and concentrate -

    - and with no hesitation, the box halts its descent, remaining motionless in the air!

"Hey, what the shock?" the man says a minute later, realizing he's standing in an alley bereft of everything but his one-piece neck-to-toe underwear. Across the street, blending in with the crowd, you make your way to the doors of the strangely altered Four Freedoms building, clad in a concealing overcoat that matches most of the people forcing their way through the walkway around you. Luckily air-filter masks seem to be in fashion, and yours pulls double duty as a way to obscure your features!

"Get lost, kid," one of the seven-foot tall guards outside the front entrance of Four Freedoms says, as a bubbling fluid flows up the tube protruding from his partly machine neck. "This ain't no directory." You notice that above the heads of the pair of gigantic guards a sign is mounted with 'Stark-Fujikawa' written on it.

"A library?" asks a bewildered old man at the base of the building when you approach him. "You mean one of those places with books? Why would you want to read those?"

"Oh!" he says a moment later, as you explain just enough more, "You mean like a data terminal. Sure, there's one right over there!"

He directs you to a large, squat device mounted against the side of a building, with a glowing screen and a large, imposing control panel. The screen simply reads "Present card to begin" and as you approach a voice from inside the speaker says "Please present your card to begin."

    What do?

"Command 'Princess Clarissa' not recognized. Please remain where you are," the machine says to your back. As you turn to flee you reach out to the timestream around you and pull it to a halt, and the ease with which you do so comes as a swell of relief after being separated from your powers. While everyone and everything around you slows to a stop you quickly leave the scene, but not before glancing at the imposing doors beyond the two giants who guard Four Freedoms. The guards stand motionless, oblivious to you as you pass by in your bubble of realtime to hide in the shadow of the tower.

A moment later a small open vehicle that looks a bit like a motorcycle with fan-driven wings descends from the cloudy and polluted sky, arriving at the computer terminal and allowing you to see what this 'Public Eye' looks like.

He steps off, wearing what looks like brown-toned riot armor, and a large red A that matches the insignia on his hovering skycycle. Looking around at the vanished crowd for a moment, hand on his truncheon, he waves his hand in front of the screen and activates the computer terminal.

From your vantage point, peering out around the corner of the Four Freedoms tower, you watch the Public Eye officer as he triggers the computer to display an image of yourself at the terminal and fleeing from it! Reflexively you touch the air filter over your face and remember that your features are obscured at least in part.

He turns and jogs across the street in your direction, but just as you reach out to freeze time around him he stops and touches the side of his helmet!

"Yes, sir!" he says to the empty air. "Yes, sir, I understand." he finishes, and after a moment you hear the sound of his skycycle as he boards it and flies up to disappear in the haze above the street!

    What now?

Once more you reach out and impose your will on the timestream around you, feeling its oceanic weight much more bearable now than before you came here, and in an instant the scene of the street and air around you slows to a halt, leaving you alone with the luckily sparse crowd.

At the fringe of it you think someone might have noticed everyone to in front of them stop moving before he was caught in your tachyon bubble, but instead of sticking around you duck in under the arm of a thirty-something woman wearing what must be this year's version of the power suit, past the two gorilla-sized cyborgs holding the door for her and into the lobby of Four Freedoms!

Inside, the lobby is unfamiliar, but somehow strangely similar to the one you first saw in 1995, with an amazingly futuristic decor and a wide desk in the middle of the open space, ringed at the perimeter by a succession of transparent tube elevators!

"That will be all, Mr. Venture. Thank you," a voice says from across the room. Behind you an Asian man in a futuristic business suit enters. "I am Hikaru-Sama, head of Stark-Fujikawa. Welcome to our employ, miss."

This, but only as an ex abrupto, a small slip, a whisper, almost gibberish, but still there, in minuscules, pt 6 fineletters. THEN get the show on the road. We need to show the readers that aino is still a teenager with feelings and shit.

Hoo doggies! Suddenly Aino is in the employ of Stark-Fujikawa, a turn no one here at the Mutant Quest office saw coming until it was too late!

Who knows what kind of fun our heroine will get into in the far future of 2099? Who knows what sites she'll see or who'll she'll meet?

Anyway, let's open things up to the Mighty Mutie Mailbag!

Hypothetical Question: If Aino were to find herself(through time travel, holes-in-reality or one-too-many-a-margarita-on-the-chief-editor) in the Civil War series, which side would she choose; Cap'n America and the pro-heroes or Tony Stark and the government? Assume that Tony CAN'T give Aino a Mechanized Ultimate Pinguinel to win her over. Furthermore, would her friends from the X Institute follow her or would she have to face them in dire battle?

I see you're seem to be sending Aino through the great stops in Marvel history. Any hints about where she'll go next?

And will you be rehiring old artists and writers for those copies?

Registration acts and mutants go together like kerosene and lit matches, Guy! Though what's to say a rational girl like Aino couldn't argue the pros of such a list, and who knows - she might be able to bring the rest of the crew over to his side!

    >Fred and Dennis

Well fellows, our writers originally thought about sending Aino to 2020 and teaming up with Machine Man, but then we realized that 2099 is where it's at here in the '90s! Where she goes from here is anybody's guess!

As for your question about guest artists, we asked our editor and he replied by throwing an old copy of The New Mutants at us and shouting "Just trace 'em from this!
