The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

Until recently you were simply Aino Virta, a fifteen year old girl living with a secret burden known only to your immediate family: your mutant power to slow down time in a bubble around you, allowing you (and anyone else nearby) to remain in "realtime") while the world around you slows to a halt! Anti-mutant crusaders, giant robots and criminals with jet packs are nothing compared to the drama you've had to face living in a house with eight other super-powered teenagers. On top of that you've got to deal with homework, and even though you can freeze time you still can't help being late for class.

But for now, all that's behind you. Finals are over, and thanks to your last-minute brilliance Dr. McCoy has recommended you for a summer job with Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four! With two weeks of vacation before the summer session begins, the Mansion has been pared down to a skeleton staff - Professor Xavier, Ms. Braddock and Mr. Drake are left "holding down the fort", and while most of the students are going back to their families, your best friend Sam has persuaded her mother to take you, Megan and Clarissa with them to Disney World!

Of course, that's not until tomorrow morning. The excitement today revolves around Dr. Richards' offer to pick you up and take you back to Four Freedoms Plaza, "to help you familiarize yourself with the building and the nature of your work" (according to the video message he left with the Mansion's computers) before your part-time job officially starts at the end of the break.

"Well kids, take care of yourselves," Mr. Logan says as he cinches a duffel bag onto the back of his motorcycle. The hot May sun reflects off the bits of chrome that aren't encrusted with mud as you all stand out in the driveway seeing the teachers off - "Yeah, maybe I'll get lucky and get rained on," he remarks gruffly as Sam points out just how dirty it is.

"You too, Mr. Logan," she says, flying toward him and catching him off-guard with a hug that he awkwardly accepts.

"Aw, cripes, kid. Yer gonna make me tear up," he replies before disengaging himself from her arms and nodding at you. "See ya later, Aino," Mr. Logan says as he pulls his cowboy hat down low on his head and starts the bike up with a loud roar.

As Mr. Logan pulls away and drives off in the opposite direction that Mr. Summers and Ms. Grey departed for half an hour ago, a station wagon turns onto the lane and drives up to the Mansion. "That's Noah and Caleb's parents," Sam remarks as she floats back down to the ground next to you. "Geez, you think they saw me flying?"

"Sam, you dummy," Ricardo says, putting on his sunglasses as he steps out into the bright outdoors. "They already know their kids are mutants. That's why they sent them here."

Sam sticks her tongue out at Ricardo as Clarissa follows him outside. "Hey, you think the Professor will let me take Penguinel* to Florida with us?" Clarissa asks, bounding down the wide steps to the Mansion's circular driveway.

"I really doubt he's gonna let you take a giant robot anywhere," Sam responds as she scoops up a handful of grass and stuffs it down the back of Ricardo's shirt, laughing and flying up into the air out of his reach as he shouts and grabs at her. "I mean, they haven't even let you *look* at it since they brought it back to the Mansion, have they?" she shrieks, darting upward just ahead of his grasp.

"Get back here, you little -" Ricardo yells, chasing after Sam and colliding with the boys' father as he steps out of their car!

"Oof-" the man lets out as his hat is knocked to the ground.

"Sorry!" Ricardo shouts, rebounding off him and hopping around the lawn, trying vainly to disgorge the mass of vegetation from his shirt and grab Sam at the same time, while she floats just low enough to tease him before flitting out of reach.

As Clarissa and Sam continue their discussion over the top of Ricardo's yelling and squirming, Professor Xavier's telepathic voice suddenly echoes inside your own mind!

<<Aino, please come to my study when you have a moment.>>

"Hmph. Thanks," the boys' father replies, not entirely mollified as you scoop up his hat and hand it back to him.

"OK, but don't take too long," Sam calls back to you. "Clarissa wants to ask if she can come with you and Mr. Fantastic 'cause she wants to see Johnny Sto- YAAA!" the girl shrieks as Ricardo finally manages to grab hold of her ankle. His efforts are rewarded with a tennis shoe to the face, and though his own mutant power dampens the blow, it still surprises him enough to let go of Sam, who rockets up out of reach, calling "Time out, time out!"

As you step back inside the Mansion, the cool air comes as a shock compared to the hot late-May weather outside. Shivering, you quickly walk through the empty halls, noticing just how quiet things are with everyone leaving for the break. At the door of the Professor's study you raise your hand to knock, but at that moment his voice calls to you from the other side, "Come in, Aino."

As you enter you see Professor Xavier sitting next to his desk, and it takes you a moment to realize what's different about him - he's traded in his ultra-high tech hoverchair for a simple wheelchair! "We must keep up appearances," he says, in answer to your unspoken question. "I believe you've become aware of the necessity of maintaining the facade of normality in recent weeks."

"Shut the door, please," he says as you step inside. "I wanted to talk with you about the events surrounding Magneto and the Brotherhood from two weeks past. Don't worry," he says, raising a hand as he notices a worried expression spring to your face, "I am not upset with the actions of you and the other students. At the time I was horrified to have you involved, but I have done a great deal of reflection since then."

"I believe the time has come to cast off the "training wheels" and begin preparing your class for what the future may hold. Magneto and the other members of his Brotherhood are being held in the Vault, a facility created especially for super-powered criminals, but there may be other threats that arise - threats that require the actions of *everyone* at the school, not just the senior staff."

"You are the first of the students to be made aware of this decision, because as I have been led to believe you are somewhat of the de facto leader among your classmates." The Professor wheels himself around the desk toward you and continues.

"In any case - thank you, dear," he says as you take the handles of the wheelchair and push him along out into the hallway. "Your summer classes will be changed to reflect this, but for now, I would advise you to simply enjoy the time you have. I understand Dr. Richards will be visiting this afternoon to escort you back to the Four Freedoms building? He and I have the greatest respect for one another, and I am sure you will enjoy working with him," the Professor finishes as you wheel him out into the hall where Luke and Noah wait with their parents, holding their travel bags.

"Ah, Mr. and Mrs. Meyers, I'm glad I had the chance to talk with you before you departed." He turns his head and looks up at you, saying "You may go now, Aino," before turning back to them.

"What? What are you d-" Sam starts to say as you propel her into the Mansion, and right into Noah as he and Caleb walk out the doors with their parents in tow.

"I hate you so much," Sam whispers to you, blushing, as Mrs. Meyers steps forward.

"Oh, is this Clarissa?" she asks. "Noah and Caleb are always talking about you," she smiles, as her gold necklace reflects the sunlight.

"Uh, no, ma'am, I'm, uh," Sam sputters. "I'm not Clarissa, um-"

"This is Sam and Aino, Mom," Noah interjects, saving the girl from further embarrassment. "You remember, her family's from New York City? And Aino's from Finland."

"Finland!" the boys' mother responds. "Such a long way from home!"

"Well, ladies, it was nice meeting you both, but I'm afraid we have a long drive ahead of us," Mr. Meyers interrupts. "Come on, boys." Caleb and Noah heft up their bags and follow their dad out to the waiting station wagon.

As the remaining students wave to the car as it departs back down the lane and turns toward Salem Center, Megan gives you a curious look. "What are you asking all this stuff for? Did the Professor say something to you? About us?"

"My theme would be some kind of tuxedo like James Bond," Ricardo says, shaking the last bits of grass out of his shirt. " 'Cause I'm the ladies' man."

"Your theme would be a big 'Kick Me' sign on your back, 'cause you're a dork," Clarissa giggles.

"And Clarissa's theme could be a big bulky computer helmet, like that guy in the Avengers, Ant-Man!" Sam snickers.

"Shut up, it would not!" Clarissa huffs. "It would be like, a UMF suit covered with circuits or something. Maybe with a miniaturized wrist computer."

"So really, what's with the questions?" Megan asks.

"For cripes sakes, Aino, the break's only two weeks long," Ricardo says. "Don't be a baby."

"Shut up," Sam barks at him, as you wrap your arms around her. "You think he even knows I like him?" she whispers to you.

"I think it'd be pretty hard for him *not* to know," Clarissa says, standing next to the two of you awkwardly. "I mean, we're just friends. Like, they're my guy friends, not my boyfriends," she says, stumbling over something halfway between an apology and an explanation.

"What about me, babe?" Ricardo asks, insinuating himself into the conversation.

"You're just the guy we use to carry the heavy stuff," Clarissa says as she narrows her eyes at him. "Seriously, Rick, lay off with the insults-"

Clarissa's words are cut short, as a bright flash of light suddenly flares up on the lawn, momentarily brighter than the sun! For a moment you think Megan has lost control of her powers, before your light-blinded eyes make out her form off to one side!

"Robert, Elizabeth, get the children inside" the Professor begins shouting to Mr. Drake and Ms. Braddock, before a tall, lanky form emerges from the glowing rift - Dr. Reed Richards!

"Good Lord, could this finally be the place?" he asks, more to himself than anyone around him. Tapping on one of a slew of small mechanisms attached to his belt, he continues. "Chronological sensors confirm it - this is the correct timeline!"

He looks around at the stunned and dazed students before him, his eyes settle on you, and he gasps! "Aino! I've found you at last!"

As the rift seals itself and your eyes adjust, you take in his features, and notice that he seems more haggard, more worn-down, than you remember from your meeting with him a few weeks back!

<<Aino, be careful,>> the Professor's voice says to you mentally. <<There's something blocking my telepathy - it's almost as though he doesn't exist!>>

"You're confused," Dr. Richards starts. "That's understandable. Let me explain. I am Dr. Reed Richards, but - of course! This was the day you were to meet me, the day everything started!"

He runs a hand through his hair (grayer than you remember) and composes himself. "I am indeed Reed Richards, but I am from your future. In my past, you came to be employed by me, first as a summer intern, then later as a full-time employee, advancing the field of temporal physics at a rate that would have been impossible had you not been there!"

"But then something happened. An accident of some kind, either a miscalculation on your part or a faulty machine, but no matter what caused it, the process was... unstoppable."

"It... began to unravel the timestream, allowing small quantities of other existences to seep in. At first we thought we had contained it, but it quickly grew beyond our ability to manage. As our reality collapsed, I was able to escape... but I was the only one."

As he continues to tell his harrowing tale, your fists curl shut as you pull at the tachyon field around Dr. Richards, and while you can sense a residual disturbance of loose tachyons around him, you feel a counter-weight of T-pulses greater than anything the Danger Room ever delivered!

So... don't tamper with chronotechnology that was never meant for the hand of man, just leave the higgs boson alone, etc, and we should be fine? If it's just a matter of us not turning on our time-studying large hadron collider at some future date, I say we promise to never ever run an experiment that might destroy the timeline. THE WORLD IS SAVED! That will fix things, right?

Or is all the unraveling uptime working its way back and we need to find a way to set right what has already gone wrong in the future? Do we need to prepare for an invasion of exoexistential futuremen? At the very least we should get some clearer intel on just what we were doing when we apparently borked up causality and the walls between realities.

You fall to the ground, stunned, unable to move, and as Sam and Clarissa drop to the ground to cradle you Ricardo steps between you and Richards, and shouts "I'm gonna kill you, old man!"

"You can't hurt me, boy," Richards says, holstering the device, just as Mr. Drake sends out a stream of ice that quickly encases the other man!

"You should all be thanking me!" Richards shouts, stretching his body in uncanny ways to free himself from Mr. Drake's amazing ice powers! "I was able to find this place, this time, the wellspring from which the destruction of reality was sprouting, and eliminate its source!"

Suddenly his shouts are cut silent by a rift in the sky over the gardens a quarter-mile from the Mansion - a rift ten times larger than the one he emerged from!

    "No! They've found me!"

    "Who?" Mr. Drake demands.

Richards' face drains of all color, and his harrowed eyes widen with horror.

Ricardo blocks any projectiles, or if there are none, starts firing objects at the Sentinels. Sharp objects best.
Megan arcs electricity between the Sentinels.
Sam ... evasive action is best action. Get the Sentinel's attention if at all possible and just be hard to hit.

Her name is Aino Virta, but she hasn't been called that in a long time. She goes by Tachyon now.

She used to be a student at the Xavier School. That was a lifetime ago, before the Kelly Act and the work camps and the Sentinels.

The oversized gun she carries is a plasma rifle, based on a Reed Richards design, weaponized by the last remnants of a group called Advanced Idea Mechanics, and most recently traded on the black market for a wagonload of processed soy rations. It has to be large - there's a tiny sun inside that makes it a deadly weapon, even against Sentinels. That's good, because the robots that control this once-free nation can detect the timestream alterations that her mutant power causes, and Tachyon is one of the most wanted mutants on the continent.

The year is 2007, and robotic Sentinels control a North America where mutants are condemned from birth.

"All right, we're in position," Bullet mutters into his headset. "Slow things down and get them interested in you, then we'll pick up what's left. Once that's over, hold still and I'll get us over the wall."

"Let's do it already," Tesla hisses from her perch over the reconfigured trunk of power cables snaking into a transformer.

Tachyon closes her eyes and raises a fist in front of her view, tugging delicately, nonchalantly. Then the tug becomes a grasp, and everything around her stops, as though the world was just put on pause. She releases and grabs hold again, this time in a smaller area, almost as small as when she first learned she could do this.

    *WOOP WOOP WOOP*

She can hear the alarms, and two of the three Sentinels show themselves instantly, one managing to squawk out "TEMPORAL DISTURBANCE DETECTED. SIGNATURE MATCHES WANTED MUTANT TACHY-" before its head sails toward the Atlantic ocean, courtesy of Bullet's impeccable aim.

The next instant, a flare brighter than the sun engulfs the buildings a half-mile from you, as Tesla does her job. The camp's back-up generators come on for a brief moment before their energy is siphoned away, drawn into the mutant like a ravenous battery. The speakers go out with it, and Tachyon lances the second Sentinel once through the chest and a second time through its braincase with two wide beams.

"Where's the third one?" Bullet's voice crackles over his headset. "The scanner's not showing it anymore!"

Bullet leaps from the rubble-strewn rooftop and lands with a feather's weight before racing toward Tesla, keeping himself just under the speed of sound to avoid detection from other agents around the former Big Apple. A moment later the two of them arrive next to you.

"Nice shooting," Tesla says as she draws out its residual energy, leaving it completely inert."

The next instant the two of you sail up into the air as Bullet leaps and accelerates himself over the wall of the prison camp, landing on the dirt and slowing you both instantly.

"She's inside!" Bullet says, holding up the scanner. "Unless that black marketer we paid for her ID code was lying to us."

"Let's go!" Tesla shouts, blasting a hole in the wall of the dormitory, lighting up the night with a flare of electricity. Within seconds a crowd of people poke their heads out, and Bullet races in, emerging a second later with an emaciated woman wearing a bulky electronic collar -

    " -Aino!" she gasps weakly.

"No time for hugs, ladies, we've gotta jet," Bullet says as he grabs Tesla's hand with his free arm. "Tach, I can only take two people over with me. What's it gonna be?"

    Well?

"Don't be too long, chief," Sam grins, lighting up her pallid face. A moment later she disappears in a blur along with Bullet and Tesla in an arc over the wall of the camp.

Taking the Bullet train is faster, but Tachyon has her own way to get over the wall. She raises one foot and puts it down in the empty air in front of her, and rises up, taking her other foot off the ground. The air molecules underneath hold as still as they can, giving her a staircase that she builds one step at a time, trotting up through the air until she reaches the top and sees the others under the awning of an abandoned convenience store.

From the top of the wall Tachyon sees what looks like a building shift, and she realizes the third Sentinel has been "playing possum", like Logan used to say, waiting for them to split up!

"MUTANTS DESIGNATED BULLET AND SAMANTHA BINH. TERMINATE ON SIGHT."

Tachyon takes aim in a series of slashed panels that carry all the way across a two-page spread, ending with a close up of the Sentinel's face as it cries "ALERT! PLASMA CONTAINMENT SYST-"

Below, there is a single panel spanning the remaining space.

The giant falls, silently, though its death sends a shockwave that ripples through the cloud of dust generated by its landing.

Tachyon leaps back, cushioning herself on a mass of slow air, and as she slings the plasma rifle back over her shoulder she snatches up a pair of small stones. The first is hurled at the wall, speeding up to hyperaccelerated velocity that shatters the reinforced concrete. The second she uses on the opposite wall of the camp.

As the other imprisoned mutants cautiously make their way out, some flee to the other side, and some beg you to take them with.

Bullet and Tesla argue that it's too much dead weight. Dragonfly volunteers to stay behind in place of another happy camper, but the others won't hear of that.

It's been a long day. It's been a long lifetime. But then again...

    ...there's always tomorrow.

Good questions all around, P! Allow us to cut through the murkiness like a hot adamantium claw through May Parker's apple muffins! Aino is indeed in a different when that that when which she was once in... we think. Fear not, our Trans-Atlantic friend, what you just witnessed was merely a shadow of what-might-be, a mere cherry on top of the proverbial cake that Mutant Quest has become. For now we'll continue observing, along with Uatu, all that transpires around young Aino, but don't be surprised if we spring another double feature on you!

Tomorrow is the last day this week to expect an issue, so if we can't get it to the printers in time expect the next issue no sooner than Monday. Which reminds us: due to the aforementioned fumigation of the Mutant Quest office, we'll be working out of a time-share studio with our Distinguished Competition, meaning that any issues we manage to get out for the next two weeks may not make it to the presses as early in the day as usual. We've crunched the numbers, and it looks like we might be able to get it on shelves by five p.m. New York time.

Just got a call from the office, so here's a heads-up:

No Mutant Quest until next week, when we may be on a slightly later schedule.

    Nope, keep trying!

I'm going to go with 'more powerful on a cosmic scale than she realizes, and unsure of where/when she fits into the big picture.'

She, like the protagonist of that strip, is a female avatar for a (group) intelligence that is at least partially male. Also, Aino is going to go meta. (And is a Time Lady. Calling it now.)

Perhaps that in each tachyon affected by aino, there are, in fact, worlds and universes; Perhaps the very universes in which the side stories are occuring.

Or of course the fact that we will be learning a lesson about aspiring to higher power when our power is considerable in and of itself. Dat humility man, can you dig it?

I am amazed to see this. Is Aino Virta a common name for Finns?

I love the direction that today's issue has taken. Lots of twists and turns. It was refreshing to see our power met with a solid deterrent (Sentinel aggro is a fearful thing), and the new powers were nice. (Slow-airwalk is classy). In fact, I wouldn't be suprised if Magneto himself was an erstwhilst ally, helping defend mutants against Sentinel incursion. . . Strange times calling for strange measures and interesting bedfellows alike. . .

And as for Aino waking up with the first class. . . I'm a sucker for stable time loops and self-fufilling prophecies. . . Who wants to bet that we end up putting the actions into motion that get Aino recruited by Xavier, and get Aino's parent's to agree.

Sorry for chain-posting in a completed thread, but it's late, I missed the thread earlier, and I'm brimming with imagination at the moment. Wouldn't it be great if we ended up teaching Dr. Hank McCoy SCIENCE! Then in the future, he teaches us, so that we can teach him so that he can teach us. . . . Knowledge from nowhere!

Also, we have to play matchmaker between Jean & Scott. God only knows they can be moody, and as teens? Oh, boy. Go team friendship!

Close, but no cigar! The No-Prize continues to dangle!

Thanks, pal. I had a lot of fun running it.

    Horray! Stable time loops!
