The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

Until recently you were simply Aino Virta, a fifteen year old girl living with a secret burden known only to your immediate family: your mutant power - until recently quite uncontrollable - to slow the fabric of time itself in a bubble centered around you with a smaller bubble of "realtime" inside the field where you can function normally. Through daily practice in the Danger Room you've managed to gain a strong control over your power, to the point where you can slow down the world around you without concentrating (as long as you're not under stress), and even move the bubble around to encompass or exclude different things!

It's been just over a month since you arrived at the Mansion, and in that time you've managed to make yourself a part of the School despite the hurdles you've faced. Masked anti-mutant crusaders trying to break into the Mansion, giant robots trying to apprehend you and your friends, and criminals with jet packs are nothing compared to the drama you've had to face living in a house with eight other super-powered teenagers. On top of that you've got to deal with homework, and even though you can freeze time you still can't help being late for class.

    (cont. on next page)
    >> Professor X !Wz87.gYWh. 05/04/11(Wed)13:45 No.14811668
Before tonight the senior staff at the Mansion couched their extra-curricular duties in evasive language, but following an attack by the mutant terrorist Magneto and his Brotherhood of Mutants during an anti-mutant demonstration in which prominent senator Robert Kelly was kidnapped, the teachers revealed that they serve as a vigilante group to combat exactly this kind of trouble! You and the other students were forbidden from coming with, and since all the senior staff were called away to deal with the trouble in New York City you've been left in the care of Jamie Madrox, a man whose mutant power is the ability to create duplicates of himself!

Now, you and the other students watch as the game room's TV shows scenes of destruction, as Mr. Summers and the other senior staff fight for their lives and the lives of hundreds of civilians against Magneto's rampaging crew on live television!

The reporter on the screen narrates the carnage, as you see a blue blur leap at someone only to be hurled away, smashing into a brownstone apartment! It can only be Dr. McCoy, the lovable blue monster! He impacts against the wall and falls to the debris below, where he lies unmoving under the shaky lens of the television camera!

"Fires have erupted all across downtown, many seemingly caused by the spectacle of these mutants fighting, while others may have been caused by rioters or accidents! The situation looks bleak, and police are nearly helpless to stop these mutants who are tearing the city apart!" With that, the reporter screams as something impacts against the camera, plunging the TV into static before the TECHNICAL DIFFICULTIES sign appears on the screen!

As you look around, you notice Clarissa and Megan are not in the game room anymore...

    What will you do, Aino?

Looking around between the other students and one of Madrox's dupes (or possibly the original, you aren't sure) engrossed in the events unfolding as they switch from channel to channel, you rise and walk out of the room - though Mr. Madrox notices you go. Just as you leave you stop, staring in horror as Mr. Logan's body rises into the air and is hurled away by some unseen force! Behind him, Mr. Summers is struck in the head by a huge cinderblock and falls out of view of the camera!

After another grisly moment you shake your head and stride determinedly to find the other girls. In the main hall you see another Madrox loitering, and as you poke around the Mansion's wing you see two more Madroxes* conversing with each other at the foot of the boy's dorm staircase.

Just when you're about to knock on Clarissa's door she sticks her head out of Megan's room and whispers "Psst! Aino! Are any of those clones around here?"

When she gets the all-clear, she waves you to the door - propped open only enough for her to look out through - and says "Go tell the others to meet us in my room in twenty minutes. And try to keep those guys busy somewhere else too, OK?"

    What now?

    [*Madroxes? Madri? Who knows? -Ed.]

I go tell the others to meet up in Clarissa's room in 15 minutes.
Must always have 5 minutes spare for general bullshitting, and deciding on tactics that shall be thrown out at the first sign of combat.
To deal with the Madroxen, I do absolutely nothing - because actively attempting anything will only make them suspicious.

as far as action goes, if the kids are planning to go anywhere there gona need us to get there in time. and personaly im not averse to that,

Wonder if we can Lens an object's motion with it, much like light and sound can be focused by stuff that slows down their passage.

What use would lensing motion be?
Well, regular air outputs a force of 1 kilogram per cm squared. This can't be used for anything because pressure is equalised, but ...
If we could Lens the very air around us, with our 100 foot bubble, we could get a 1 meter x 1 meter wall of air to focus all of its force on one spot.
That would 10 TONNES of force. Also known as, Splat.

You return to the game room and flop back onto the couch against Sam, who lets out an unsuspecting laugh at being used as a landing cushion. "What's up?" she mutters when you begin to tell her what you've heard.

"OK," she whispers, nodding. "I know how to get the word out." She stops and looks over at the Madrox sitting in the recliner against the side wall, but as you follow her gaze you see his attention still seems to be on the television and the reporter's voice of escalating destruction.

She reaches across the gulf between the edge of the couch and the rug on the floor where Mary Ann and Luke lie sprawled next to each other, a bowl of uneaten popcorn between them. Just before Sam's fingers touch Luke's foot the two of them look back at her, then at you, then at Sam again. Suddenly, their voices begin to speak softly in your head!

<<We understand. Hey, everybody, it's us. Clarissa wants us all upstairs in twenty minutes, but Aino wants us there in fifteen. Don't act like you heard this, it's a secret.>>

Their eyes look at you again, and you hear something that you somehow sense only you can perceive:

<<You should have just asked us first!>>

<<So what about them?>> they ask, and your mind is drawn to Mr. Madrox as he flips the remote from station to station.

You repeat the mantra that Ms. Braddock taught you during your (admittedly brief) meditation sessions with her a few times before breaking the television's spell by asking the others if they want to go upstairs and play some video games.

Just enough shakiness is put into your voice that when Mr. Madrox says he can just turn the TV off if you don't want to watch it you're able to wisely suggest that he keep watching it to see what happens. The other students, acting their best parts as well, rise, stretch, and agree, and in ones and twos you file out over the course of a minute, though as you trot up the stairs toward the female students' hallway you notice one of the Madroxes watch you from an alcove on the first floor.

When you knock on Clarissa's door she lets you in, where Megan is standing in her black and yellow UMF suit, holding a handful of yellow cloth like a bouquet!

"I know I haven't been here as long as some of you," she says, "But this is my home, it's the best home I've ever had, even if I did spend most of it living in a glass box." At this, Sam lets out a quick burst of laughter, then throws a hand over her mouth to silence herself.

"And I love our teachers, and what's happening out there is something that we can stop! If they get hurt, or killed... that's not something I can live with. I'm going out there, and I'm doing it off the record."

"Until this is over," she says, pulling on a yellow mask that obscures the top half of her face, as she poses in a full-page panel:

    "Call me TESLA!"

"Now," she says, holding out a handful of identical UMF masks. "Who's with me?"

We have to help (not like the original 5 weren't doing this when they were 16? OH WAIT!) But we need to do it smartly. Get our techno path and our psionic duo to work together to give us all an info patch of who we are going up against while we travel. In the interim, to get out of here...either trip an alarm at the opposite side of the compound or we try to get our babysitter to let us go.

"How many clones are there, anyway?" Sam asks Luke and Mary Ann. Their eyelids flutter for a moment, then they state "Six. Now five, but one of them is walking toward this hall," they finish, gesturing at the door. "I think he might be getting suspicious," they speak in unison. "You want us to do something about that, right?"

"OK," Noah says emphatically, causing everyone to look at him. "I'm in, but only because I don't want you guys getting hurt."

"Thanks, baby," Ricardo says, puckering his lips before grinning. "You in yet, cranky?" he asks Caleb, who shifts his stance and looks at the self-propelled entertainment system as it continues to rack up points with a barrage of bloops and bleeps.

"Ugh, this is really... really hard," Omni says as Bullet helps them walk speedily across the Mansion. "We're blanking them all to us, but it's hard, there are so many of them... and they're all a little different..."

"Keep going, you're doing great," Dragonfly says, floating next to them and helping prop Luke up as Remote forces her way through the Mansion's computer system. "I wish Caleb had come with."

"Someone's gotta be here who knows what's going on," Megan reminds her, "And he knows how to at least get the medical bay's systems started."

"OK, here we go," Remote says, biting her lip. "Hold onto your butts."

From another wing of the Mansion an alarm begins ringing out, along with the computer's pleasant voice at maximum volume! You hear the Madroxes scrambling and shouting at each other, and in the confusion Remote turns and makes a fist at the palmscanner mounted to the wall.

*BLEEPT* goes the large steel door as it unlocks and slides open, and beyond it you see dim lights begin to brighten, revealing the monorail that will take you to the Blackbird!

"OK, Tachyon's in charge," she says as you all step onto the monorail and feel it whisk you to the Blackbird. "What's the plan, when we get there, anyway? Land in a field and take a taxi in?"

As you board the Blackbird and its systems come online, Remote settles into the pilot's seat, straps in and grips the armrests. "OK, um, hi Emp. Time to fly, OK?"

If you want to stop the power-flow through the pole, Tesla is best for this task. I bet she can divert or consume energy or blow up the transmitter or something.

"Right!" Dragonfly shouts as she surges upward, carrying you over the heads of the crowd who gasp "She's a mutant!" Their concern over her genetic heritage takes a momentary backseat to the tension as the flames gout outward once again, and as she ducks back and maneuvers closer you hear Omni's voice in your mind again!

<<I'm using you to get a closer feel, Dragonfly - there's someone alive on the third floor, but they're trapped!>>

"Going up!" she says with some strain in her voice, as she pulls you up to the roof above the fifth floor, where flames have already begun to eat away at the ceiling of the apartments underneath!

From down on the street you hear someone shout "Those kids are crazy!" followed by a collective gasp, before the street lights around you suddenly go out!

With Omni's power you see through the eyes of Bullet and Tesla as she draws the electrical current away from the building and loops it back on itself, blowing out the power line and sending half a dozen blocks into darkness! Once inside the building Bullet darts through the almost motionless flames, as Omni's far-ranging senses hone in on the trapped victim!

<<"Hey, we found him!">> Bullet says through Omni's telepathic relay, <<"But part of the ceiling caved in and he's trapped! We need some help here!">>

Dragonfly floats above your head and looks over the side of the building to where Copycat has managed to make himself look older, if not more distinguished, and has moved at least half of the onlookers away from the base of the building!

You narrow your eyes into slits and concentrate, feeling the pulse of the tachyon field surge out around you, slowing the already-dreamlike fire to immobility and plunging the entire building into stillness! In the back of your mind you feel Dragonfly lift you up and carry you through a blown-out window, past licks of fire that stands unreal and ineffectual to where the others wait.

"Glad you could make it," Bullet says to you. "Late for the party again, huh?" he asks, but this time there's no mocking in his voice.

"I could cut away there-" Tesla says, gesturing at the middle point of the wide beam that traps the man, "and then Bullet could knock it away. Sound good?"

You concentrate and drag the tachyon field back, inch by inch, just enough to expose the rubble to realtime, and then Tesla and Bullet to their work, slicing the fallen roof into two manageable sections that he can knock away as if they were weightless!

Beyond the now-freed mess the man lies with his eyes closed, and Omni's voice rings out again! <<"He's not dead, but he's close! Hurry up, you guys, the police are here!">>

This probably wouldn't be a very good thing to do right now. There have been a number of very bad mutant types running around causing trouble, and right now the cops are more likely to cuff everyone and let god sort things out. Aside from all the other problems it would cause, getting arrested would limit or ability to further heroically help people. "The other BB is in a park about five miles from here. Omni can't tell where anyone is, though. There's some kind of psychic interference."

"So let's go!" Bullet says, leaping into the copilot's chair and landing with feather-lightness.

"What do you think, Aino?" Sam asks. "Park it and look around, or what? You said Magneto could crash a jet, right?"

"The other BB's not crashed, it seems to be working fine," Clarissa adds.

Things are about to get serious, folks! What will our mutie protagonist and her misfit crew do?

This would be a case of saying:
    >Implying there are police here
Wiping all cameras of the blackbird, freezing the nearby spectators for as long as possible, and then thundering off to find the professor.

Apparently there's some shit goin' down in North Manhattan, so that's where to get to first.

    >"What do you think, Aino?" Sam asks. "Park it and look around, or what? You said Magneto could crash a jet, right?"
Fly in so damn fast that he won't have time to crash it, and if he DOES crash it, be ready to eject and have a rough, but Dragonfly and Bullet-assisted, landing.
Bullet, add an extra dose of Goes Fast to the jet.
Tesla, Magneto's power works on magnetics. Can you make Eddy currents in the blackbird's frame, to counteract that?
Omni, keep lookin' for signs of obvious fighting with your powers.
Dragonfly, keep lookin' for sings of obvious fighting with your eyes. Be ready to catch me if ejection is necessary - I can slow down everyone but myself.
    Remote, piloting's all you.

Self? Prepare to stop time on any falling people IF NEED BE, prepare to stop time on any attackers to the blackbird if there are any. Otherwise, sit back and relax for a while.

I like everything but the suggestions for Bullet and Tesla.

This being our first time in the blackbird, giving it super speed sounds like one hell of a bad idea.

Running electricity through an aircraft that can't ground itself and is carrying an unknown type of fuel ALSO IS A BAD IDEA.

Come on guys, at least act like we're a SCIENCE! nerd.

Actually, if we extend the core Realtime bubble out to about a quarter-inch from the edge of the slowtime bubble, and slow time in that one little sliver by a fraction of a second, that should be enough to shield us from being easily sensed, tracked, or aimed at. A quarter-inch shell of 'little-bit-off' is better than nothing.

"I can try-" Megan says, grabbing onto a piece of exposed metal fuselage, "But I don't know how badly it will mess up the Blackbird-"

"Well, only do it if we need it," Clarissa says, aiming the Blackbird and sending it streaking toward the Upper West Side.

"Hey, lemme give us a little push," Ricardo says, leaning forward to make contact with the dash panel in front of him before Clarissa and you both shout "No!"

"You want to crash us into the Atlantic?" she shouts.
"Leave this part to me, OK?"

Even without Ricardo's light touch, the jet takes only seconds to arrive, but as you come in sight of the other Blackbird Omni grabs their heads and moans!

"Uuuh- wow, that's a headache... Guys, there's some kind of psychic shield around this place..."

As the jet lands on the grass in the darkened park next to the other Blackbird and hisses out a burst of air you and the other mutants stand and ready yourself for whatever lies outside, posing together in a full-page panel...

    "OK, let's go."

Well, Inky (can we call you Inky?), Mutant Quest is published on a fairly erratic schedule, though we try to get it out by 1:30 pm Eastern time weekdays. Which weekdays it appears on is a matter of debate, since even the writers don't know what to expect!
