Your name is "Gneutered." You are a gnoll, a former arena slave, and a current gladiatrix manager.

Previously: You bought and managed three slaves, quite successfully.

Less previously: You were offered an easy win by Marianus, the bureaucrat who runs the arena. It was a deathmatch. He was eager to pass it off on someone, which made you suspicious, and you turned it down.

For shits, you coached her from the sidelines, and she walked out of the arena alive -- unlike her opponent.

Even less previously: The scrub who was sent to the arena with no chance of winning was no ordinary scrub, but an aristocrat whose husband, for some combination of personal, business, and political reasons, managed to legally have her sold into slavery, where a proxy sends her to fights to the death she has no chance of winning. Her family is paying you a great deal of money to keep her alive.

Least previously: You bought a new slave to put into the arena against Volcatia, the aristocrat. Her name is Eunice. Neither she nor anyone knows exacly what you are planning yet.

Your options (as you previously have weighed them) are sending her into the arena and intentionally getting her killed, sending her into the arena to subdue Volcatia without killing her (losing any prize money you would have earned, as well as looking bad in the eyes of arena management), or buying the most morally bankrupt slave you can and sending her to the arena under one of the previous plans.

Slicks is signed up to go against the fighter who took her out in the free for all and has been given the nickname "Dragonslayer" by her owner.. Septimia and Antonina are taking on two no-names. This is decided, and your training plan is fairly standard by now. Your main task is to figure out exactly how to handle the whole "deathmatch" thing.

Hm. I think we need to consider that if we keep feeding slaves into the grinder against Volcatia, not only will we lose face in the arena, but also our own gladiatrices may come to lose morale and/or respect for us. That's bad, so I absolutely say we should never have our slave take a fall to her death against Volcatia.

I say we either subdue Volcatia without killing her, or abandon the plan altogether.

    The answer is probably no.

You were considering a public attempt to buy her to make her owner look like a weirdo when he turns you down, though. This would probably be something you do later, after the fights.

All of your slaves are signed up for fights, and the current plan is to have Eunice fight Volcatia (either dying or subduing her). However, in the last thread, in the time it took me to post that, a ton of arguing over whether that was a good idea happened, so this is your one chance to make a new plan.

A last minute replacement, most likely.

You could pull her out, buy a new slave, make her change her name to Eunice, and show up the day of, provided that the new slave didn't have an arena record. It's too late to put in one of your more experienced slaves, though.
    >> Anonymous 05/01/11(Sun)03:25 No.14773017
I guess we are waiting on you to go with the original plan, gmq.

Should we use IRC I wonder, this seems like it is to quiet than it really is.
    >> gmq !!pyb5WSpixjT 05/01/11(Sun)03:26 No.14773021
You decide to keep your original slaves on their standard program, and train Eunice in nonlethal techniques, with the hope that she can pull off a win. Of course, really, anything that happens is a win for you, on average.

Antonina and Slicks adjust to their new equipment quickly, and overall your first three slaves are doing very well.

Eunice? Well, she certainly makes you appreciate how far your original three have come. Still, she manages to memorize all of the basics you drill into her, and guard against simple attacks.

    Too soon, game day arrives.

Antonina will be using her heavy shield (and by extension, club, as it is the only other one handed weapon), and Slicks will be using her tail knife and weighted chain, leaving one hand free for a club or buckler. Septimia can use any equipment you want. You have enough armor for all four fighters, so this isn't an issue.

Also, you have 72 SP to bet.

    Bets/equipment? Other actions?

Go with Light Armor for Septima, she needs to have freedom of movement so she can pull off her elbow drop without crushing herself in her own suit. I would also say she have a club, and a spear with a buckler. She will be told to drop the spear if her opponent gets to close to use it well and switch to club.

Go the same level of armor for our Scrub, and give her a net and a club. Tell her to stick to non-killing blows and try to disarm Volcatia.

    Bets are as Follows:
    10sp on Septimia and Antonina.
    Our Standard 5sp on Slicks.
5sp on Volcatia for the Death-match.

    >5sp on Volcatia for the Death-match.
Betting against your own slaves is a really good way to get investigated by the arena, and potentially fined and banned from betting. The arena makes most of its money from gambling, and it needs to look legitimate -- that means a zero tolerance policy on the perceived throwing of fights.

Other than that, doable. Barring any new votes, that's the setup.

The crowd is a lot larger than usual today, and a lot more excitable. Oh, that's right, Local Champion Atifa the Ravager is going up against... some traveling foreigner in another gimmick fight. But this time somebody is dying. Funny how from your perspective, the big news manages to slip into the background.

Oh well, a bigger crowd is a bigger crowd.

First up: Septimia and Antonina's match.

Their opponents are worryingly competent, at least in their initial appearance on the opposite end of the arena. One, armed with a short sword and net, moves forward. The second, armed with a spear, seems to be equally willing to circle around for a flank attack, or a coordinated attack with her partner.

Your team pretends to go for the unified attack, but splits up at the last second, each fighter choosing a different target.

Septimia charges, staying on the opposite side of her opponent's net, and attacks, but is parried. Her opponent counterattacks fiercely, and at the last second Septimia sends the woman's sword strike onto her arm guard, where it glances off harmlessly.

Antonina fares little better -- she does get a shield push in, knocking her opponent off balance.

Of course, this is far from a complete failure. Your team has successfully negated their opponents advantages.

Antonina shoves her opponent back once again winding up with her club in the process, then finishing the swing as her opponent stumbles backward, unable to defend herself. For a moment, everything lines up perfectly, and Antonina scores a powerful blow to the head that sends her opponent to the ground, going limp before she even finishes falling over.

Septimia, who is by now standing on her opponent's net, follows up with a quick series of blows, one of them jarring her opponent's arm and forcing her to drop her sword, another knocking her to the ground, and... there's the elbow drop again. She's been waiting for a chance to use that one.

The crowd, which is notorious for hating close, conservatively played fights, loves it.

As the medics drag out the fighter Antonina clobbered, Slicks and her opponent, who you recognize from the free for all, enter the arena.

Slicks is impressive as hell. She is dangerous from all directions, and wielding ridiculous custom equipment. Dragonslayer is using the tried and true buckler and club combination.

You shout out the name of one of the standard attacking strategies that you go over on a daily basis -- on that involves a series of feints to draw the opponent's defenses away.

Slicks needs little encouragement. She opens with a barrage of light attacks, throwing in a few swings at the legs to keep her true purpose hidden. She unhinges her jaw and lunges at her opponent, causing her to jump back. Next, the big fakeout -- a wide swing at her opponents head. Finally, the trick -- instead of stopping herself to recover, she lets her momentum carry her in a circle, whipping her tail knife along Dragonslayers unguarded legs. The fighter staggers back, shocked, and a second later a red gash appears, drawing one line across both of her thighs.

Time for Slicks to fuck around. Dragonslayer's club is the first to go, knocked to the ground with a shield bash. Next, her club, dropped involuntarily when Slicks' claws caught her. Along the way, some more scratches and bruises.

The fight ends with Dragonslayer trapped against the wall, her entire neck in Slicks' mouth. She squeals in terror, then goes limp, admitting defeat in the most visible way possible.

Your fish are getting a bit too big for this particular pond, it seems.

There's just one more fight -- the traditional free-for-all. In your professional opinion, you got robbed. Slicks should have been scheduled after it, not before. Judging by the crowd's reaction, they agree.

You reassure Eunice that her opponent is a helpless baby, without implying that she can relax. You also remind her that she is explicitly forbidden from killing her, which seems to help even more.

Sure enough, Volcatia enters the arena holding her sword and buckler out far in front of her; a sure sign of a nervous, unskilled fighter. Eunice, to her credit, has at least remembered where her feet go.

As for getting more money while waiting on fights, why not let one or two of our girls get a job working construction. Slicks and Septima are very well trained and could do for some toughing up while we train Antonina and Eunice if she lives. A week before the fights we could get our girls back and have them train and rest. I will assume we could fit training in after work too if they do get a job.

A few seconds into the fight, you quickly abandon any ideas about advanced strategies.

"YOU ARE TOO FAR, FRONT LEG BACK, NO, NO, YES, NO, NO, NO, YES, NEVER, GO GO GO!"

This goes on for a minute as the fighters make nervous swings at each other, unwilling to get in range. You groan, silently and also taking up no time, because there is yelling to do.

Finally, you get Eunice to fully comprehend that she can attack with her net while staying out of sword range. After a few swings, she gets lucky, attacking as Volcatia swings and tangling up her sword arm. Volcatia attempts to counter, but can't get free. Obviously distressed, she starts trying to pull away.

Alright, Leg sweep is fine, but no tackling, you remember the last time. I think she might be very good close up. Her trainer would most likely have her work on what helped her win last time, Grappling.

The Crowd hates long drawn out fights like this. Use this as a speaking point for stopping death matches with pups. It makes them unable/unwilling to go all out like other fights.

Eunice goes for the trip, with intense encouragement. Volcatia is knocked to the ground.

Eunice flails at her enthusiastically, and eventually enough hits go through to keep her opponent down.

Of course, Volcatia thinks she's about to be killed, so a beating that would normally subdue her just makes her thrash around more desperately, causing Eunice to hand out more bonkings. Eventually, Volcatia stays down. That's the end of that.

Of course, the crowd and the arena expect more, and when they realize they aren't getting it, the boos start pouring in.

You speak. You talk about honor, history, and how some rich idiot slumming in their one entertainment outlet is taking a giant steaming dump on both.

They mostly ignore you, but a few audience members are together enough to know that what they just saw was a complete joke. The trainers are particularly receptive, in fact, though many still look at you with disappointment or contempt.

Eunice is led out of the arena. Some people throw things. She's mostly happy to not be dead, injured, or a killer, but she's still stressed to the point of not really being functional.

Once your affairs are in order -- girls checked, winnings collected (18 back on Septimia and Antonina, 6 back on Slicks, who was apparently favored to win, and none back on Eunice, who apparently failed to meet the by-the-book definition of winner), you confront Volcatia's owner.

    Action?

Query: What is the general stance on challenging someone to a duel over matters of honor?

That concept doesn't really exist as an aristocratic thing. You'd essentially be threatening to punch the guy because he spilled a drink on you in a bar.

While they are getting Vol loaded up to be healed, intersept the Noble Rat and offer publicly to buy the slave at a good price of 50sp(this should be way beyond what she would normally be worth, 35sp I would think, but within our budget) and train her to be a real fighter and get her into real arena matches, not death matches where these pups have no way to really grow. We must sight his inexperience and bring into question his practice of sending his fighter in to so clearly die. Ask if he bet on his fighter to win or not.

    >Train her to be a real fighter

Or we could just hand her over to her father. For the record: the proxy owner will never sell her. She is being sent into deathmatches to die.

The proxy owner might never sell her, but we might be able to argue our way into having him lease her training out to us. I mean, he's just using a slave trainer at the moment, and it's not terribly unlikely that she'd eventually die anyway.

You do know that is the plan. We are just using that wording as a way to back him into a corner in terms of options on how to reply. Social engineering, you understand. The back and forth in the battle of wit and subterfuge.

"My slave amuses me and continues to do so, much more than your money. Oh yes, I forget, this is your job, isn't it, not your entertainment."

This does not escape the notice of the other trainers.

"Besides, I have full confidence in my slave."

He is startled by the idea of betting on the fights, and doesn't quite know how to react. Instead, he has a couple of servants load up his belongings, and exits.

    Could be worse.

And with that, end of part 5.

Ok, lets start getting this ball rolling. I say we bring the trainers that are around us to Boycott this Hobby'est that is ruining our livelihood. I am sure we will have the support of the trainer that lost a fighter to this Noble Rat's 'entertainment'. even if we did help coach her, there where enough people yelling he might no connect us to that event. We did make up for it by showing them we care about the sanctity of the Arena. After that, go and collect our winnings and reward for keeping the daughter alive another month.

Once we are done working the crowd and seeing if we can get them to agree on not fighting him. when we collect our reward from the parents let them know what our plan is and that we might need help in brining the Noble Rat to such a point where he has to sell Volcatia. They have something we do not, and that is station. we are working hard to ruin him from our end, but there is only so much we can do.

Lets work on getting our girls something to do in their free time. I say we start getting the supplies and such to allow them to take up Art as a hobby, they have been asking for things to do and art is a very relaxing and mentally stimulating thing to do. If they get good enough they could take it up as a job if they earn their freedom.

For a second source, lets lend the girls out to do construction. Say for one week. We have on month before each fight, so I think we can deal with two weeks of good training time and the work might toughen them up, letting them hit harder and take a blow better.

During drill training, we can teach the girls some rudimentary Gnoll so that we can give them simple orders and also confuse our opposition. Give a set of orders in common then Gnoll in such a way to take advantage of the trainer might make their fighter do.

    Second source of income*

Anyone else have any ideas on how to get Volcatia back to her parents. Or do we want to try and milk them dry. I have been thinking about dragging this out as long as we can on purpose to get the most reward money, but it can only last so long before they stop paying us. Even when then handed us a large bag of money in the first place the longer they wait, the less we might get each time. That is why I say we should get them more involved and ask them to put some pressure on the Noble Rat so that he has to sell Volcatia to us. I am just putting that out there as an option to drag it out, not that I am in favor of it.
