    151 KB Omnipotence Quest XIII Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/22/11(Fri)18:41 No.14683694
Laressa’s words hang in the hushed air, a soft entreaty to draw your attention. You allow a minute to pass as you decide upon the method of manifestation, testing her resolve in the meantime. She passes, of course; your dear elf has never lacked for resolve after all, remaining silent and with her head slightly bowed while kneeling upon the cushion. At last, however, you resolve to use your original form -- not only is it what she is familiar with, but it is as always the most ‘comfortable’ of your skins... something that this evening of ease and enjoyment surely demands. To complement her beautiful dress you choose finery of your own and are hardly lacking in it, drawing one of your finest and most comfortable robes from a storage plane. Fine Ophilian spider silk weave dyed a dark grey, a deep burgandy lining just visible inside the dagged sleeves, gold -- but not ostentatious -- embroidery along the edges... yes. There.

Clad and prepared you manifest across the altar from her silently, breaking the hushed silence only when you speak, “Hello, Laressa. As always, you do not fail to disappoint.” At your words she looks up and, rising slowly, gives a tight lipped smile, “Thank you, great one. I, ah, do my best. Thank you for coming, and allow me to welcome you to my castle, if you need anything during the evening please don’t hesitate to ask for it. For now... well, dinner awaits, and I hope that you will be pleased.”
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/22/11(Fri)18:45 No.14683728
You nod but hold up your hand, slowly walking around the altar, “Indeed, but first I have something for you.” With that you reach out and weave the essence of the world together, drawing from thin air a powerfully enchanted square mirror just over a foot tall and eight inches wide. Another twist and you form the raw energy into the shape you desire, a tool for viewing the gods and their works, revealing their actions, and speaking to them directly if need be. Closing the last few feet, you walk up to Laressa and present it to her, a devilish smile forming at her carefully-hidden astonishment, “I believe it is proper for a guest to bring a suitable gift? For a practical, intelligent woman an item of power, for a beautiful one a mirror, and for you both. I have noticed of late that the gods do not approve of some of your actions. I do, however, and so I think that perhaps this will allow you to be more prepared. As for exactly what it does... well, half the fun is in finding out, don’t you think?”

“I agree, lord. Thank you very much, I shall treasure such a handsome gift and use it well. I can only hope that the evening will live up to your expectations... m-mine have already been exceeded by far.” she trails off, running her fingers along the silver frame before looking up and blushing at the last part. At that she quickly turns and begins unlocking the door, murmuring a quick apology for the wait. Once you make your way into her room she only hesitates briefly before quickly opening and stashing the mirror in a secret compartment within the wall, likely correctly assuming you already knew about it anyway.

That done, you offer her your left arm and she accepts with a brilliant smile, leading you down to the main floor. You pass through a series of rooms, escorted by several servants who do their best to stay invisible. On your way through a lavish hall you feel her tense slightly on your arm and, before you can wonder why, she speaks; “Great One, I was wondering, and I hope not to presume, but I was wondering what your... name is. Y- you know mine and, ah, well, I was hoping that we might be able to... talk. And to get to know each other better.” You give her a sidelong glance and feel the corners of your mouth lift in a smile, as you nod, “I see. Well, I do not mind, though there is a difficulty. I have had many names, far too many to remember, and long ago ceased to remember a name of my own.”

At this she seems startled, turning her head to look at you, “You don’t remember your name?” You can only shrug and give an indifferent reply; “I am afraid not. But I have a proposal, you shall decide upon a name for me. If I find it acceptable then it then that is what I shall be for as long as I remember it. If not, well, then I shall not use one.”

Laressa smiles coyly in response, “Oh? That seems quite the proposal, should I be expecting any others?” You chuckle, yourself, “I suppose that depends on the rest of the evening, doesn’t it?” Grinning, she shrugs as she returns her gaze to the front, “Perhaps I should tell the cook to make the dishes less appealing then, I’m hardly prepared and the poor tailors just finished /this/ dress.” You chuckle as the two of you continue to walk, Laressa knitting her brows slightly in concentration and slowing her pace almost imperceptibly as she ponders.

Eventually you arrive at a sort of antechamber... the sitting room next to the main dining room. Inside sits the grey-haired Koris, dressed in a fine dark green and brown ensemble while looking every inch a dignified lord. As you enter he stands, walking up to the pair of you with a smile which Laressa returns. “Hello dear one, you look positively radiant, and I see that you spoke truly when you talked of your companion.” He turns to you at the last part and dips his head forward, extending a hand. “Rathiel Koris, a friend of Laressa’s. It is an honor to meet you, though she was understandably tight lipped, and I am afraid I do not even know your name.”

You take his proffered hand and speak, “Indeed, I’ve heard of your knowledge and skill. Perhaps one day I’ll even see it in action.” His implied question, however, remains unanswered... until Laressa chimes in, “Valerian, Master Koris has volunteered to handle some work for me in a few days if you would like to... observe. But in the meantime dinner awaits, please excuse us Master. Hopefully the two of you will have more time to talk... after dinner?” She phrases the last part as a question, glancing to you as she does so.

“Of course, child. I hope to come to know him better as well, but you put a great deal of work into this meal so I should not delay it.” With that he excuses himself, though you note he speaks the part about Laressa’s effort quite sharply to you and gives a long measuring glance before departing.

Your elf, however, smiles and nods to a pair of slaves servants who mind the doors before glancing to you and giving a coy smile, “Shall we, Lord Valerian?”

    >Damn field too long errors.

    Do that.

Also, I am quite displeased that we gave YET ANOTHER bullshit hax artifact to Laressa. She already has extremely powerful gifts given by us.
We should have put some limitations on their use.

You can't always alter minds without permanent damage, though sometimes you can. The knife itself does cause damage, severe damage in fact. The ones enslaved by it are focused exclusively on the wishes of the bearer to the exclusion of all else, often completely destroying who they were before. Didn't you see how her first use of it utterly changed the guy?

“Of course.” you reply, the two of you striding through the doors and into the grand dining hall, a lavishly appointed room centered around the huge intricately carved feasting table. It spans the length of the room and could accommodate fifty people easily, despite likely being only the head table for a true feast. Still, though it could serve fifty it is set for only two, the rest of the space being given over to fresh cut flowers or ornate candles pressed into a variety of forms.

To either side of the chairs in the middle stand slaves who have had their eardrums pierced and been permanently deafened, so as to not overhear their master’s secrets in addition to the mindslaving of the knife. (Not that it can be broken, but good to see her being cautious.) They are dressed in finery and holding a variety of drinks... palate cleansers, alcohols of various types, myriad other beverages that you assume to be intended to go with certain courses. Finally, of course, empty handed servitors to address any unforeseen requests by darting out the serving doors in the rear.

Overhead hang great banners, streaming down from the high vaulted stone ceiling, changed for this occasion from Laressa’s heraldry to a plain black and gold alternating theme. Slowly moving between the banners on a circuit are multicolored orbs that provide light for the room, casting everything in alternating -- but never contrasting, you note -- hues as they pass. The walls are impressive as well; hollow structures with slits in the top and a thin channel at the bottom around the edge of the room, they constantly cycle water from bottom to top. This gives the entire room a shimmering, otherworldly feel as the water silently courses down the stonework, blurring and shifting the runed magical patterns that provide the power to the enchantments within.
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/22/11(Fri)21:25 No.14685393
Laressa leads you over to the paired chairs sitting next to each other in the center of the table, both facing the grand entryway you just came in from. The servants pull them out and you sit, allowing an embroidered napkin costing more than most peasants make in a year to be placed across your lap in order to catch any food that might otherwise stain your clothing. In front of you sits the “hot plate” upon which the first courses are to be placed, and you reach for the sharp, dry wine that is poured for you.

“Well my dear, I must confess that I was not expecting to be introduced to anyone else. I don’t believe I mind the one, but you are as always full of surprises.” you say, after taking a drink, turning with a raised eyebrow to your elven hostess.

Laressa has finished a light sip from her glass as well and turns to you as she replaces it, “My apologies, he was... is the closest thing I have to a father and desired to meet you. All of my companions did, actually. I told most of them that I would only introduce you after dinner if you wished to, though Master Koris insisted on meeting you. I... didn’t see any reason to refuse /him/, at least.”

“I see...” you respond, but your mind has already gone to the room itself, probing and searching... ah yes. You see all six of them arrayed at various spying points, one even using a water-breathing enchantment to lurk in the walls themselves, to your amusement. Enough of that, you flick your thoughts and render the room unable to be observed from outside of it. Turning back to Laressa, you smile, “Well, we shall decide that later I think. For now, I believe the first course is approaching...”
    >> Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/22/11(Fri)21:26 No.14685399
And so it is, as you finish the sentence slaves silently enter from the servant’s doors with trays lined with the Hors D'Oeuvres. You point to one and the slaves whisks it onto your plate before stepping back, and you turn your attention to the piece. And a piece it is, a virtual culinary artwork... a single raw oyster topped with basil and slice of overripe tomato, wrapped in a thin slice of slightly crisped mermaid, set upon a bed lightly salted caviar with a round cracker as the base. Picking it up, you sniff it lightly and then take a small bite; the flavors to bursting in your mouth. Utterly delectable, easily within the top section of the meals you’ve had based on the combination, seeing as the majority was raw and the rest crisped. You quickly finish it off and turn to your elf, smiling. “Very good, I must say, though I do hope the rest of the meal involves cooking.”

Laressa gives a litle litting laugh at your commentary, “Oh, to be sure. I would hardly have it otherwise, knowing how you like to let things simmer... such as my mother, for instance. Why, I would say she likely lost a century of life when you came and went so abruptly, and letting her stew on it afterward was quite amusing. Somewhere in Dar’an there is likely someone being assassinated because she was in a bad mood after that, none the wiser.”

You give a lopsided grin as you reach for a second glass -- water this time -- and shrug, “I have to agree there, though she was quite the liar and manipulator. Why, in the time it took me to appear and start asking questions about you she was already attempting to convince me you were romantically interested and attempting to test me.”

“Well now, that’s just silly.” she responds, and you turn toward her as she looks over. Tilting her head, she raises a golden eyebrow over one of her laughing blue eyes as she pops the last bit of appetizer into her mouth. “I’d never test you, would I?”

    Not really.

The mer-people have their own underwater kingdoms, some quite large, and are hardly ever seen by surfacers. They mostly don't give a damn about the land anyway and fairly scornful of 'two-legs'. Think (and I dread saying this, but it's the closest I can think of off the top of my head) The Little Mermaid un-disneyfied.

Well being involved with us as she is, she'll either have a very short lifespan or a very long one.

Her flirting is obvious, yet gives the response to us. Don't go for it, it's a kind of friendly verbal sparring. The first one to explicitly state or refute romantic intent loses. But it's definitely fun, so let's try to keep the banter going while we talk about other things.

“Of course not. Besides, I’d think you only listen to half of what your mother says anyway. The question was which half...” You reply, answering the verbal stroke with a smile and one of your own before glancing to a slave. The young man immediately steps forward and refills the blown glass goblet before stepping back into position. Expert at his work, not a drop spilled, perfect amount. Excellent service.

“Mmm, you think the question answered, then?” she returns as you shift back, just in time for the second course; a choice of a light clear soup or a thick opaque one. You choose the clear soup out of habit, you always prefer to stay light with the first courses, and the bowl is whisked onto your hot plate. A strong beefish broth with a far more gamey taste combined with carrots and sagegrass and of course the main element -- seared scallops. You glance at the placard that comes with each course and note with surprise Dire Buffalo as the stock for the soup... something you don’t believe you’ve ever had. Or heard of. You’ll need to correct that from now on.

Finishing, you allow a slave to take away the plate and hotplate as the third course is served immediately after, charred peppered kraken with a spiced tomato sauce. Between bites you answer Laressa’s challenge, “Oh? Are you saying it isn’t?”

She takes time between bites of the delicious entree to shoot a coquettish look your way, “Who says I only listened to half of what my mother said? It could be that I scorned all of it, after all, and took different advice altogether.”

“Truly the lords your mother speaks to would be left disheartened and bereft in such a case. Tell me then, if not with your mother’s view where does your path lie?” you prompt as the plate is whisked away and a great platter with the hollow bone of a roc laid before you, sawn in half longways and stripped bare of meat... the meal is inside instead, a rich assortment of rice and vegetables combined with shredded roc meat and marrow, cooked to the point it melts in your mouth.

The main course is served, poached dragon egg draped in thinly sliced medium-rare unicorn stakes, all situated in a basket made of... you can’t immediately identify the bread, and reach out to check. Ah, there, holy wheat grown in the fields of Anora by the priests of the fertility goddess Sindra. Not available for any price, but apparently Laressa got her hands on it somehow. The taste is, well, divine.

“Well,” she begins as the plates are taken away, sipping lightly on the same sparkling wine that you are, “I would have to say my path is shrouded in mystery. I catch glimpses and at times, why, it almost feels like I can sit down and hold a conversation with it... but always it seems to keep slipping away.” She sighs as if exasperated and shrugs, looking over with a coy smile on her face and a slight flush before continuing, “Would you by chance know any way to catch sight of such a path again? If the path I walk this eve is smooth, I mean.”

“I have a bit of experience with such paths,” you concede over the eighth course, a vinaigrette of rare herbs and vegetables found only in the blasted and nearly barren wastes of the east, “but I can assure you that they are often perilous to walk. Only those who are sure that they desire what lies at the end should embark on the journey.”

At this she goes silent and pensive, though the pixie foie-gras entertains you well through to desert. As the alchemically frozen and flavored snows from Mt. Porium (apparently the highest peak in this world and the seat of several gods) are served she looks up, meeting your gaze with azure eyes. For a long moment she is silent, then shrugs and gives a small, sad smile. “To be honest, I think that regardless of the risks -- my path has already been decided. If not before... then at the very least the time I’ve spent following it today has made me choose this road, despite what my better judgement may say. The only option I wish to follow... means I will simply tread lightly on the path I’ve set and hope to reach the end.”

You nod, finishing the delicacy and making to stand. The chair is instantly pulled back for you and napkin whisked away. Laressa rises as you do, but starts as you immediately step toward her, closing the short distance between the two of you with supernatural speed before she can retreat. You swiftly slide your right arm around her waist and place the other hand upon the curve of her right hip, focusing your power. “Wha--”, she begins as she starts to pull back, cutting off in a yelp as she jumps slightly within your arms. Your doing, of course.

“Well then, my dear,” you say in a soft, powerful voice, “let us see how you walk the path. You are the most interesting thing or being I have found in either this world or others beyond count for a very long time; therefore, though your goal is both dangerous and difficult... it is not impossible I think. Especially with the excellent start you have made.

Upon you I have placed a mark. My mark, and its function is three-fold. First, through it you may speak to me undetected by any being -- mortal, god, or otherwise -- simply by touching it and focusing your mind to do so. Second, your own mind is sacrosanct from any who would plunder it for information or command it. Lastly,” you tighten your embrace; pulling the tall elf against you and looking into her eyes, “it signifies the path you have chosen, placed upon you alone in all the world. What you do upon that path is what shall decide your end, be it dead in a ditch or...” you trail off. As you finish she gazes up at you, her eyes only slightly below yours, with her mouth slightly parted and eyes wide.

Slipping your hands free, you move back and leave her standing, pale and shivering slightly. As she regains her senses she immediately looks down and places her hand over the mark, feeling the ever-so-slight heat it radiates before turning her face to you once more. You feel a slight tug at your mind and open yourself to it, feeling tentative thoughts filtering in to form words. *Can you... hear this?*

You nod and respond the same way, *I can. Be aware, however, that you are not to use this freely. It is more akin to a burden than blessing, at least for now. Understood?*

She nods, slowly regaining her former color and giving a weak smile, “Thank you, Valerian. I- I will be mindful.” She finally removes her hand from the symbol and brings it to the bridge of her nose, closing her eyes briefly before going scarlet. Her eyes snap open and she darts them about the room, alighting on each slave or servant attendant in turn. “All of you are to stay in this room and speak to nobody until I return, do you understand?” The ones who can hear nod, moving to herd the deafened (and now confused) slaves into a group for their mistress as she turns back to you.

“Ah, so, um, my friends and Master Koris were hoping you would join us after dinner. I... would like that as well, if you would. Though,” she diverts her eyes, suddenly intently studying one of the banners hanging from the ceiling, “I- I would appreciate it if you wouldn’t mention the marking or anything to do with that. I would... never hear the end of it.”

I considered shoulder too, but I figured wearing strapless or backless dresses was something she probably did a lot and would be inconvenient.

Well, we just shut them out, so they know that we know they were spying on us, without Laressa's approval. Let's not mention that as a favor to them. It'll shame them a bit I think. Also give them a bit of insight to our power.

Share a story about ourselves, maybe some time we beat out a competitor (but leave out the horribly evil part). Then ask how they know Laressa, try to get embarrassing stories from them. Not only will it be funny as hell, but it'll keep them away from asking pointed questions about us.

Also compliment Laressa on the quality of the meal. While we don't have anything that could be called morality, I think the girl could use a break.

And it's not like she's going to be parading her ass around in public for all to see.
Besides no one knows what our mark means anyway.

Still, it's not like we couldn't have made it visible only to her. And she'll only be able to wear long skirts with the slit on one side!

But yeah, it's no big deal. I like the symbol choice. Hard shapes, hard color. We are powerful, and our things should reflect that.

Wow guys, okay, I fell asleep while writing and am having minor auditory hallucinations. I think perhaps it's time for bed.

Will pick up again tomorrow when I wake up. Not sure when that will be. Try 13:00 or 14:00.

I just have a minor question. We were a dark lord before we ascended to omnipotence, but how strong is a dark lord exactly? I knew we were on the very high end of dark lord, so how does an average one and our former peak translate to?

In relation to us, mortals, gods, super-beings, all of them are ants.

I don't think we ever fluffed our mortal life out. We've probably forgotten most of it. It was millions of years and several realities ago.

Varies. Once again your former peak led to /omnipotence/ so it was pretty beastly. You were an overwhelmingly powerful endgame BBEG to multiple parties from multiple realities composed of people like Hercules, Gilgamesh, Merlin, Hou-yi, and Ulysses.

And average BBEG? I guess the whole "mu ha ha I will destroy this ruined world and purify it with my mcguffin" type? I mean, everyone has to start somewhere, it's just that the villains tend to become more and more scarce the higher you go in power levels. Obviously, otherwise they would rule everything.

Last post for real this time, probably. I have a second monitor set up over my bed so I can lay in bed and do stuff, so if an interesting question pops up then I might answer.

Thanks for the answer, I'll be reading through the rest of the thread now since I'm a very late arrival. I haven't ever done any DnD type playing, only go on /tg/ for the funny threads and good storytimes, but I think I can translate a BBEG to a videogame equivalent now.

So guys here's the deal. We're playing chess like we just learned what all the rules were and are making half-assed moves at random only to change direction 2 moves later. Sure it might be fun, but we should at least have some basic goals or agenda. Such things can change as we progress but I think we should at least have some sort of plan, as opposed to "lets give X, Y superpower and see what happens" I mean giving out loot is cool and all but its like being a GM and handing out your rewards willy-nilly. To this end I suggest we keep in mind the following goals

    1) Keep Laressa interesting, we can do this by continuing to let her build up and make war, but mostly we need to challenge her and not show up every 20 seconds to fix her problems. Romancing her is an option, but bear in mind that it is usually impossible to "un-romance" someone once they get boring.
    >> Anonymous 04/23/11(Sat)06:27 No.14690730
    2) Get the "Heroes" to quest and onto a level to challenge Laressa. This could involve giving them loot, but since we're building up Laressa to take on Gods, we should find a method that involves either more brute force or more subtlety than we're currently allotting them.

    3) Keep ourselves entertained while not forcing Vedibere to run "writequest" when we tell him to just observe. This one is more of a meta-goal but it should still be a goal. Therefore, I propose we start trollin someone. We don't have top do this right now or even at all, it is just a suggestion, but I think we should target some high-ranking muckity-muck and slowly collapse his entire universe upon him. Suggestions for this man include Elven King/Prince, Parthian Neighbor's King/Noble, One of the dudes from the Trade-illuminati, Maybe some sort of general or knight that opposes one of our currently running plots and turn him into our own personal Job. A thread about this would let everyone let off some steam by shooting off a cosmic bullet at an innocent bystander so the meat plots can develop with less "Lets Manifest and beat the shit outta everyone" suggestions.

    I can get behind this.

I even think the elven kings is the correct target to start collapsing his shit. We could even set it up that the party of heroes joins the war against him.

As soon as we finish up with the meet-and-greet we should do that.

As tempting as it is to turn this into Laressa Quest, we really need to deal with the heroes next. They're wandering around Kaza looking for clues we haven't planted yet and it'd be bad manners to leave them hanging after leading them so far. Everyone else has stuff they can do without us and the king's not going to go away if we don't troll him immediately.

Haven't forgotten you guys, but family crap for easter is destroying my free time. I'll try to finish the Laressa part today but honestly I can't be sure I'll be able to. Sorry.

I'll run Monday's thread long and switch between if you want instead, should I be unable to.

maybe we could send our heroes against the srite?
I think the world will need a unifying enemy as soon as Laressa finishes taking it over and sending them that way now will let us set the groundwork.

have the cure-all manifest in some holy relic or such...

that is after we finish the current Laressa bit, though (meet and greet + aftermath)

I'm thinking World War 1 -> Srite War -> COSMIC SHOWDOWN
I'm somewhat hoping that the druid uncovers something that could theoretically touch us... that would make the endgame very interesting

I doubt it, we closed off omnipotence to anyone new after we attained it apparently.

and I think the current order is actully thus.

Fuck With the Elf King -> World War 1 -> Srite War -> COSMIC SHOWDOWN
