    What scares you, /tg/?

What are the things that unnerve you, upset you, make your skin crawl. What is your deepest, darkest fear? What is the thought of which that would keep you awake at night?
What makes you so uncomfortable that you feel the need to take a shower just thinking about it?

It doesn't have a third the intellectual skill of /tg/. More than that, this is for the purpose of games.
I want real answers, not Slenderman or Shadow People.

I want to hear about loss of motion, I want to hear about twisted faces, I want to hear about the things that make for Geists and Fae and demons. I want to hear about the nightmares that could frighten the most stalwart Fighter or terrify the Kindred. I want things that will unnerve and disturb the Exalt or superhero.

Your personality is a lie. You, every little quirk, trait, or phobia that makes you who and what you are, don't exist beyond the design of some unknown individual (or thing). What it's a mask for, you don't know, and probably don't want to find out, but you don't have much choice in the matter.

You've had suspicions for a while. Little things. Things like looking at the way people were supposed to react to and interact with each other, and wondering how you could do that. Did they really think like that? Did they really act like that? You couldn't tell.

Now, you might have been told the truth. You may have guessed it yourself. (Your "shell" that is you may have been made as a science fiction fan.) Whatever the reason, the mask is coming off, unless you can stop it.

Can you? Do you even want to?

Incurable virii with clearly visible physical affects (rabies, in particular)

Uncontrolled fire. Hands down, worst way to die is burning to death.

Heights. Not so much the being high up, as much as the potential for falling. Falling a long distance hurts. Even if you survive, it still sucks.

Makes me think of that one girl who put a kitten in the oven. While reading the story I just thought of how the kitten must have felt, being unable to stand without burning its feet, the world around changing to kill it, and having absolutely no conception of its cause of death. It's something more essentially terrifying than a human being burned to death, because at least they'd know what was going on and that understanding makes it more tragic than frightening.

Glad to be of service. Just because I fucking love psychology, I'll go into the basics of intrusive thoughts. Basically, your mind runs through things while you're not focusing, mostly little stuff, such as whether or not to grab the rail while you walk down stairs or the type of mail box over there. Occasionally, they'll pick on more unusual things, like can I shove that guy and run away fast enough, or how fast could I throw that baby. for most people, these thoughts are dismissed about as quickly as they come on, but for some (notably OCD sufferers), they tend to latch on to the thought and try to force it from their mind (which has the opposite effect, similar to trying not to think of pink elephants). This creates a cycle of obsession over the "evil" thoughts, which increases their prevalence. This is usually combated (in OCD) by the use of "rituals," which draw the mind's attention away. Reliance on these rituals is what constitutes the "Compulsion" part of "Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder" (with the intrusive thoughts and focus on them constituting the "obsession" part.

Hilariously enough, because of the views on temptation and sin, Catholics have a very high incidence of OCD.

The autopsy found a large amount of fat deposits all over the victims' arteries, livers, and inside their hearts. They theorize that the sudden drop of pressure from nine atmospheres to ONE made all the lipids circulating in their body to suddenly condense out.

The only saving grace to the story is that they likely died instantly.

Subsequent investigation by forensic pathologists determined D4, being exposed to the highest pressure gradient, violently exploded due to the rapid and massive expansion of internal gases. All of his thoracic and abdominal organs, and even his thoracic spine were ejected, as were all of his limbs. Simultaneously, his remains were expelled through the narrow trunk opening left by the jammed chamber door, less than 60 centimetres (24 in) in diameter. Fragments of his body were found scattered about the rig. One part was even found lying on the rig’s derrick, 10 metres (30 ft) directly above the chambers. His death was most likely instantaneous and painless."

On a more serious note, the worst times I feel fear IRL are just before I get on stage to perform. As soon as my foot hits the boards, though, it's like swimming through the clearest water...

The scariest plausible thing I can imagine is the best of men, the f'n love child of John Gault and Niel Armstrong and Albert Einstein and Simo Häyhä... being corrupted to turn his great talent and skill to nefarious purpose. Especially if that purpose is my pain.

Strangely enough, historic blood sports like the Gladiators and fantasy blood sports like Bloodbowl don't hit my squick button. I think its because it either comes from a past era or because its mostly played up for comedy to the point that you can't take it too seriously.

Your gut is full of bacteria, friendly and foul. Same as your mouth. There are mites that reside in your eyebrows that live solely by eating your dead skin cells. And that's nothing when compared with the obscene numbers of mites and microlife living in your mattress. There's fecal coliform bacteria on almost every surface you ever touch. The acceptable margin for adulterants in a jar of peanut butter includes 150 insect fragments and 5 rodent hairs. Everywhere you ever go and everything you ever touch has had something die there.

    Sleep tight.

TKiY wasn't meant to be read all at once in one go. It's a collection of interrelated stories, sure, but it's meant to be strung out over days.

TKiY also was written in a time when horror as a genre hadn't coalesced, there was a whole hell of a lot of virgin territory in the late 19th century literary world. It's not an early horror story, it's a late Gothic series of stories, some with some horror elements.

The transition from a focus on the uncanny (an element typical of Gothic literature) to a focus on romance and feelings (which was the other side of Gothic literature) feels disappointing to a modern horror reader, because we have different expectations than the Gothic lit readers of TKiY's era and are likely to have been introduced to TKiY through the more modern works of Lovecraft, and are thus built up to anticipate horror. Modern readers also have a tendency to believe that "Gothic" is an early word for horror, when, really, some horror evolved out of a few specific bits and pieces of Gothic literature... as did much of science fiction, fantasy, the trashy romance novel, the detective story, and literary erotica.

But if I'm watching tv and everybody in the show I'm watching suddenly stopped and started staring at me whispering my name, I would freak out.

If I see a kid in the street suddenly fly away. I would freak out.

I won't be freaked out immediately, but it would haunt me for the rest of my life if I am unable to find a scientific explanation for it.

Diver D4 was shot out through the small jammed hatch door opening, and was ripped apart. His death was most likely instantaneous and painless

Dunno if anyone's said this (didn't look) but waking up while being operated on.

The concept of waking up in the middle of an operation, paralyzed but alert and in pain, while you have a tube shoved down your throat that's breathing for you and a doctor's cutting you open, moving your organs around gently as he works on your exposed flesh, and then the doctor stitch and stapling you back up, and you feel every pierce of the skin.

That feeling of pain, being fully aware but unable to alert anyone.

That and being buried alive, trapped in a pitch black box 6 feet underground, and no one can hear you. To die underground, starving, running out of air, going mad, alone in the dark, knowing that someone put you here, that they did this on purpose and would inflict such misery on someone.

Phobias exist because they cause a self-fulfilling comfort loop simply by avoiding them. They're irrational, sure, but not any more than any other aspect of the human mind. The easy way to beat them is exposure, but depending on the type that may not be possible. For a fear of mirrors, I would just go into a room with mirrors on every wall and have a friend stand there with you while you work yourself up and then back down.

It could just be a specific phobia trigger or conditioning (watch a lot of scary movies?). Either way, exposure will probably deal with that, and if it's not terribly distressing it's probably not worth worrying about.

    >so, I guess modern techniques are confront the fuck out of your fears?

Basically. The idea is that you mess with your body's stress levels by acclimatising to the increased level of stress. By being in close proximity to your phobia, you rapidly reach a high stress level, which your body then acclimatises to, reducing you back to your base level eventually (note, this may or may not be very quickly). When this happens, you no longer associate the phobia with stress, and you can confront it without fear (assuming it works, some phobias are really deep-seated, or by their nature are difficult to extinguish).

NOTE: Leaving the exposure early actually strengthens the phobia, as it causes your brain to associate leaving the object of your phobia with a reduction in stress. If you are going to "confront your fear," make your friends hold you down.

ah, no worries then. Thinking back on it, it sounds more and more like dissociation, which is odd because dissociation usually happens in episodes, not based on triggers (occasionally having bouts where you feel like your skin is made of plastic, or you're watching yourself from outside of your body). That's an interesting one, to be sure.

it's 2 am, and you can't sleep. Too hot.

infront of the TV you plop yourself, and with it's quietest level of volume, enjoy an infomercial about miraculous kitchen knives, punctuated by seedy ads for 1-900 numbers. Just as you begin to wonder if you maybe really DO need these knives in your life, the program ends abruptly, thank you for watching.

you wait, expectant of a commercial or a bumper, thinking this is one of those "oops, the guy switching the tapes must be getting coffee" moments.
...but now, it's a few long seconds past the comfortable zone, and you're noticing how awkwardly long this blank pause is, just a black screen with nothing. You become aware of how dark your living room is, how the flashing LED of your stove clock reflects eerily off of your black, uncovered windows. You turn around to see the time that isn't mirrored, and suddenly the room illuminates from behind your head with a piercingly loud 1400hz tone.

You twist back to your now brightly lit up television set.
on it sits a blank test card of a little girl and her clown toy with an old, 80s-era text overlay in yellow,
    >This concludes our broadcasting day. Please join us at 6:00am for the Morning Hour.

you instinctively mash your volume button, to no avail. You scramble with your controller, which suddenly slips out of your hands onto the floor. You're trying not to get the eeriness of the situation get to you, and, controller in hand, glance up at the television again.

    The text is gone.
But the girl is no longer staring vaguely towards her clown friend.
    They are staring at you.

You mash your power button and the television screen blinks into nothingness, and now you are alone in the deafeningly silent darkness, only your stove clock and microwave remain. The tone still rings in your ears.

...can you make it to your room alone?

I used to be afraid of the normal stuff. Spiders, snakes, the dark, et cetera.

Sometime during my seventeenth birthday, though, after fifteen years of living with diabetes, my glucose level dropped so hard and so fast that it damaged my brain. I've got a six-month period of my life that has no memories, but was apparently full of violence against my family. I'm told I crafted weapons from screws, batteries, lightbulbs, and more, and actively used them in fights that I forced to happen.

What I do remember is three months of trying to cope with a total inability to do things that I took for granted. Speaking resulted in word salads. Writing was more or less out of the question as nothing made sense. I couldn't remember how to do anything.

I've still got papers that have writing from that period, and most of it looks like deranged scrawling with the occasional moment of lucidity in the form of "hate them" and math that isn't correct.

I'm not afraid of anything anymore, but I'm fucking terrified of losing my mind again.

Heights. Heights heights heights. Amusement parks are hell for me, water parks especially. Fucking spaces between those steps.

Also, deep ocean. You're just floating there on the top of an abyss. Absolutely nothing as far as the eye can see, no land, no boats, no point of reference. You look down and you see the glimmer of sunlight on the ocean waves and you realize you can't see your body. You clamor to find it, plunging your head in the water. There are your legs, twitching away. You try to bring your head up but a flicker of movement catches your eye. You look left, right, back...down. You find yourself staring into interminable desolation; nothing, it gets blacker, more nothing, your eyes sting from the salt but you're entranced you can't look away. Your mind falling, falling away, deeper and deeper, blacker and horrible. And when you feel you can't fall any more, a flash of red; you jerk your head up, gasping for air. You heave and bob and thrash and scream wildly, but there's no one to care. You dive down, both eyes wide open.

A pair of bloodshot eyes in the black. Staring back. At. You.

Fuck you nature, water shouldn't be so opaque.

Spiders, mirrors sometimes, death, and incredibly tight spaces especially those that I know when I scream nobody can hear or help. There are also two things I can't really shake off for the life of me.

One is when I'm going to bed. I go to bed and I turn the television off, and there is nothing but the sound of the fan humming and outside noises. I always get that feeling that something is watching me. Staring at me from across the room, or directly on top of me. While writing that sentence I literally looked up to see if anything was there. Thankfully, nothing. Usually I imagine it to be some sort of ghost with black eyes and a face contorted into an eternal scream. If I look at it, I'll hear it too. A horrid, blood curdling scream that assaults the ears and needles the heart with fear.

The other one is windows at night. This started when I was about 11 or so. I was watching Animal Planet and it was doing some sort of Bigfoot special, and there was this one really creepy picture of him that made me very uncomfortable. It didn't help when they said sightings have been near where I live and it was pitch black night time. I was on the couch and right next to a window. I've gotten over the whole bigfoot thing but the fear that while I'm doing something, perhaps some dishes where I face the window, some sort of creature will pop up. Maybe to scare me, maybe just walking by. Either way, something terrible will enter my view, and holy fuck it's scary.

    I know this feeling.

When I was a kid, I was strolling through my living room while a movie was playing and I stopped to pay attention for a moment.

on it, the scene was of some little girl who had just gone to bed... but woken up, and suddenly it was morning, overcast, and the entirety of her window was all grey with fog. Seeing nothing but white outside, she walks slowly up to her window to get a good look.

As she nears it, she makes out a bunch of similar dark figures walking through the fog. People, it looks like, but all walking slowly together. She gets closer, tip-toeing up to see who they are...

and suddenly one passes by the window, extremely close- some sort of skull-faced, wide glaring eyed being with a dark jacket that stares right at her.

and then she jolts awake and it's still dark.

that scene scarred me and if you know what movie this is, you have to tell me so I can relive that scene and get over my haunting fear of it.

you want to know what scares me, NOTHING because i have witnessed the most unspeakable horrors of the human mind specifically my mind.

    allow me to explain,

I smoked a type of mint called salvia divinorim and it destroyed me. I was no longer a man I no longer had memories I no longer had senses. I was nothing. the last human though I had before the blackout of my small existence was hold your breath this is going to be awesome. I was mistaken.

My body had passed out while I was away and when I came too I was not a man I had no idea what a man was in fact I had now idea what anything was it was as if I was seeing the world for the first time and all I knew was fear. It was no normal fear but a primal monkey brain based horror at each and every unknowable sound and fleeting vision. All I could do was say Help me these words had no meaning to me but I knew if I said them something would happen to take away the badness.

Then I heard a voice my friend said here you feel down let me help you up. Where are you I responded. behind you he said. I though the concept of there being something behind me laughable how could something exist that i couldn't see. but I remembered how to turn my field of vision and their he was. he reached out his hand and i was overtaken by fear of the jutting cog edged protrusion. Climb me he said and suddenly he was a mountain of human shaped fleshy rocks so i grabbed hold and hoisted myself up
imagining the journey taking many months from the floor up to the mountainous peaks of this man.

The worst was still to come by far

You're buried alive in a coffin, 30 feet below the surface of the earth, with a flashlight and a severed head. And then just before the batteries in your flashlight die and plunge you into darkness for what remains of your life, the severed head's eyes open and look directly at you.

I've been plagued by nightmares, reoccuring ones since I was a child.
Two mainly: One is a forrest of meat, the trees breathe and move, they ooze puss from soars and flies are everywhere along with a terrible stench. T

The second dream is one about a parasite that grows on my skin. It is like small bulbs, I've viewed similar pics on the boards (bot flies) and some guys art where he is plucky these disgussting nauseating bulbs from his fore arm.

I actually get physically repulsed...you know when your body shudders or chills from the thoughts of this. Just thought I would share

my nightmare is a kind of moving intelligent darkness, not a shadow but a real physical darkness, which won't let me shout or move even if it doesn't touch me and i know i can't attack it, if it can touch me something bad will happen, worse than seeing everyone i love die and than slowly torture me to death.

I got a good one for you.
I'm an amateur game programmer/designer, and I have some recurring nightmares and phobias, etc. Now, I decided it would be fun to start taking these things and working them into a horror game.

This was a bad plan. Giving a life, albeit limited to my programming and animations, was simply something I should not have done. They were only strengthened, reinforced, by this mocklife I granted them.

Now, if one were to make a tech-horror based thing, you could have a designer craft a recurring monster from their psyche, only to find they gave it an actual existence, a physical presence, and it wants to show its appreciation by actualizing all their fears about it.

after eternity of being ripped in half and having all hope that it would ever end destroyed I saw the kitchen I was standing in. I regarded it with sadness knowing that it was all a lie that i had been miraculously given one last chance to look upon my cast off reality. I chose to get a drink of water.

after the sweetest most refreshing drink of lukewarm tap water i had ever had and will ever have in my life a fresh hell was thrust upon me.

reality was breaking down for good this time.

The colors i saw were indescribable the oranges and yellows and browns that made up the circus tent of reality began to bleed into one another. reality became a thin frame that moved faster than i can even comprehend down wards and to the left of me thin pains of the universe were lined up in an infinite row on each side of me and as each one passed the essence of myself would be transfered from one pane to the next each microsecond of time i could see coming towards me i would occupy it for the briefest of moments and it would pass me by lost like the endless others that had come before it. I knew utter destruction and creation millions of times i could see reality as a topographical map hinting at a fourth dimension it was the only way i could process the magnitude of this 4d universe, this too had always been happening and would always happen and i could see it now and it would never go back to what it was before.

this entire process from coming too to when i got back to baseline took about ten minuets.

tangentally related, if you're a game programmer you should know all about Minecraft.

Waaaay long ago I started playing it and there was some silly story about a phantom NPC in the game that would appear in the render mist and then vanish, named Herobrine, like a ghost. They have faked footage and screenshots, but I find it fucking horrifying.
What scares me even more is that Notch could slip him into the game's programming at any time, never say anything, and us players would see it, freak the fuck out and video and screenshot evidence would be worth nothing to have someone believe you because it's all been faked before. It's absolutely perfect.

the idea of a game phantom left over in some undeleted source code, like Herobrine, terrifies me.

Sufferer of major hallucinations here. I'm not going to read the thread or else I'll start tripping balls, but what I find scary is the thought that no matter what I do or say, there will always be a darker part of me. A part that wants to take apart live humans with an anatomy textbook handy just out of curiosity and sadism. A part that wants to take perfectly docile and happy babies and endzone-spike them into the concrete. A part of me that wants to rape a woman and then gnaw off her genitalia. A part that I could let take over me if I wasn't eternally vigilant; a ruby shard inside my brain that has been there since birth and only grown to the vibrations that The Mindsplinter is causing from dimensions away.

I have a story that isn't quite this, but has put so much fear into me.
Last year I volunteered for a medical study regarding antidepressants, of course I'm a stupid teenager so drinking happened anyways. I blacked out at a house warming party playing Halo. I then apparently left for coffee, and proceeded to walk through the sketchiest part of town to the river valley where I got stuck waist deep in mud. I was found the next day by Fire Deputies who were out just scouting for training areas for next year. When they found me, I was a few hours away from dead is what I've been told. The other thing is apparently I was completely lucid and responsive when they found me despite having a body temperature of around 31 degrees. I don't remember any of this. All I remember is going from a couch to having something in my throat, not being able to open my eyes and someone (my mom) was holding my hand, listening to people saying they weren't sure if they could take me off yet.

There is nothing as terrifying as "waking up" with something inside you, with voices you cannot place for the life of you talking about your fate when you can't even see or breath. Nothing.

ehm, not really. i am not really afraid of the dark. i am afraif of the creepy, living darkness which hides in some shadows and will devour all my loved ones, while i watch trying to scream, which these "thing" denied me, unable to run away, unable to attack with a baseball bat, not knowing what will happen next, or what it is. it is rather lovecraftian, kinda like the color thing in one of his stories. too bad i only read it five or six years after these dreams had startet.

also creepy is the following feeling: you woke up in the middle of the night and you can feel the presence of another "person" sleeping besides you, but you are alone, the only one with another key to your flat is your girlfriend, working the nightshift. you know someone is there, you can feel him, you can feel how he uses space on the bed but you don't dare to turn around and look what or who is there.

It may sound lame but it disturbes me greatly, it changed my sleeping times and i have tons of stories like that, happend in my dreams, half-awake times and even a few time when i was clearly awake.

The light in the laundry room refused to turn on, and because of this thread I am paranoid as fuck. The furnace and water heater are here as well. One of my roomates apparently used the bathroom while I was down there so the pipes all rattled and groaned with water. I actually screamed, and still had to finish putting the shit into the dryer, I don't know if the setting was right but fuck me if I'm checking. I actually ran back upstairs.

But anyways, I've stood up and had head rushes where I've lost control of my body and just fallen right over and flopped around like a fish. It's terrifying because I know how to stand up and I really want to when this happens, but I can't get my body to listen. I also was in a toboganning accident when I was younger and it was only for maybe a minute, but I swear I suffered full body paralysis. After I hit that hay bail I couldn't breathe or move my arms or legs at all to show that I was ok. That loss of control scares the daylights out of me

It's bright daylight, with all the staring eyes and voices that you can't *quite* hear that go with it, that frighten me.

I know that each of you has to face the darkness, or deep water, or mirrors, at some point. And most of you will be able to stand it for as long as you have to.

Hopefully my memories are real. Also hopefully I'm not about to lay down, close my eyes and die. Sleeping breaks the stream of consciousness you know. The thought that at some point in my life, killing someone just for the sheer pleasure of it may seem like a logical choice to me.

I've spent most of my life being called various stripes of crazy and being diagnosed with anti-social personality disorder in highschool really only underscored that. I don't think it makes me a bad person to have such a disorder, it just means I don't feel emotion quite the same as others do and that I have a lot of difficulty empathizing with people. I've always managed to learn to cope with my anger incredibly well, despite it being more or less a constant fixture of my emotional state.

However, when I read up about people like John Wayne Gacy or any other serial killer, I can't help but see myself in their shoes, wondering what emotional upset or life altering event it would take to put me on the path they found themselves on.

The idea of being in a situation where I can not move my body. No paralysis, I mean being stuck with no hope of unsticking. If my arms and legs are restricted I get a little freaked.

I guess im also afraid of heights, because I can not look straight up into the sky during the day without getting really really dizzy. Unless I hold onto something i'll get dizzy. no it doesn't, it just renders an eight hour chunk of it inaccessable to your memory functions. You're still conscious. You can be awoken easily by outdoor threats, you are still having a great deal of mental activity. Hell, you're probably out having a fantasy adventure conjured by your subconscious. Just because you don't remember it doesn't mean you weren't conscious for it.

I'm using the PSYCHOLOGIST term for conscious, which is any state in which your brain is, you know, active. doing things. You're UNconscious if you have little to no brain activity, like if you've been hit really hard in the head or are in a coma or are dead or something.

Most of the time you certainly have the ability to respond to your surroundings, you have an "I" in your dreams as well- people are DOING things while they're asleep. Modern dream science says the things vary from wild vivid adventures during REM to repetition of boring tasks over and over during other segments.

However, this is all over six months old and rememberings gleaned from about four articles, so take it with a grain of salt and outdatedness.

    Velociraptors

It's a little known fact that Velociraptors are the third leading cause of death for men ages 26-33 in this country. In addition, scientists estimate that 1 in 20 people are really Velociraptors in disguise.

Confirmed Velociraptors include Vin Diesel, Ronald McDonald, Laura Bush, ghosts, Uwe Boll, Ayn Rand, and West Virginia. As you can see, they've infiltrated every level of society.

    WHAT

    >Del Toro confirmed that the film would begin production as early as May 2011 and start filming in June.[28] However, in March 2011, it was announced that "Universal refused to greenlight the project due to del Toro's insistence that it be released with an R rating rather than a PG-13."[27] According to Salon.com, "Universal wants to hold onto the project in the event that it changes its mind and decides to make it later, either as an R or PG-13 movie. But del Toro is already trying to set up Mountains at another studio (possibly 20th Century Fox, which released Cameron's Titanic and Avatar).

Parasites, specifically; things crawling beneath the skin. I can't stand it, seeing it makes me itch and freak me out.

Internal injuries. You know jokes about Clotheshanger abortions knowing full well those are real? I lie awake at night with thoughts of things like that.
Needles. More than anything, needles. I had a nightmare that kept me up for 3 days straight of waking up in a gourny with IVs riddled all over my body, still drugged up I fell off the table. Pulling every needle out from every vein, feeling each sharp jab as I rip each one from me. Then proceeding to crawl along the floor helplessly as I'm still capable of pain, but unresponsive in muscular control. That was my worst nightmare.
I'm also fearful of Hospitals and doctors. I have an insane fear of having to go under the knife, surgery, abdominal surgery. The idea that things can be lost inside me, that something can go wrong, anything can go wrong, and I'm left powerless to do anything about it.

Last but not least the fear of isolation and helplessness. The idea that all that I love and cherish in life can walk out and leave me and nothing I can say will change their mind and bring them back. The idea that the person that I need most will turn their back on me. The possibility that my family can die someday, abruptly, and I will never see them again. That's the worst fear that keeps me up at night the most often

    >Psychfag! If you're still here, is there any specific thing for your brain treating your reflection as though it were an independent entity/living human/whatever? I get something like that sometimes.

Not that guy, but jamais vu can result from impaired communication between the seat of declarative memory in the hippocampus and the seat of emotional memory in the amygdala, resulting in subjective unfamiliarity and a sense of depersonalization (e.g., "I KNOW this is my face, but it doesn't FEEL like my face."). Additionally, some people suffer from 'face blindness' (prosopagnosia) where due to impairment of the fusiform face area of the temporal lobe, and they may have difficulty differentiating faces to begin with.

In severe cases, usually the result of stroke or traumatic brain injury, people may actually believe that there is a doppelganger that is trying to take their place or that their loved ones have been replaced by doubles (Capgras delusion). But for the overwhelming majority of people who suffer recurrent episodes of depersonalization there is no loss of reality testing (i.e., you don't go 'crazy'), and though there is no known effective treatment, it tends to get better on its own over time.

The dark has always lead to some chilling moments for me. Though I don't fear the dark itself, it's the idea of what lurks in it. A few moments when I was at my Uncle's house has this. They had this long desolate road in the countryside that lead to his house out in the middle of nowhere. Sitting in the back of the truck just staring out into the night, didn't help that my cousins said the road was used in Jeepers Creepers. Another was a moment that really freaked me out. It was late and I was in the living room, watching tv as a kid. Everyone was asleep, I was pretty much alone. Suddenly I hear a noise coming from the door, I turn and the fucking doorknob is wiggling, like someone on the other side is trying to turn it. I try and wake up my cousin whose sleeping next to me, but he would not wake up. So I just sat there, watching and listening to the doorknob wiggling. The worse part was the windows were stained glass, so I could not see outside. Eventually it stopped, but i was freaked as fuck
