The year is 1995, and anti-mutant riots are sweeping the nation. Fearing what might happen to you if your true nature is discovered, your parents have enrolled you in Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters, where you can learn to harness your amazing gifts, or at least be isolated from those who fear and hate you.

A few weeks ago you were simply Aino Virta, a fifteen year old girl living with a secret burden known only to your immediate family: your mutant power - until recently quite uncontrollable - to slow the fabric of time itself. You've been at the Mansion for less than a month, but in that short time you've seen things you wouldn't have believed to be true - your science teacher is a blue monster, your best friend can fly, and last week you were being chased across the Antarctic ice by a giant mutant-hunting robot! With everything else going on in your life it's a wonder you're able to keep up with your homework and practice your own power of temporal manipulation!

Luckily for you it's Friday... however, the weekend is still several hours away, and standing between you and lunchtime is Mr. Logan's short but daunting form as he surveys you and your classmates assembled in the open field between the Mansion and Breakstone Lake. After two days of nothing but rain, the warm weather has turned the field into a humid mess, and as you pull the foot of your UMF suit (the same kind of suit every one of your classmates is currently wearing) from the mud, you feel a little jealous that Sam can keep her feet off the ground.

    (continued on next page)
    >> Professor X !Wz87.gYWh. 04/18/11(Mon)13:35 No.14635155
As Mr. Logan gruffly doles out instructions, you survey the field ahead of you. Despite having access to the Danger Room and its seemingly infinite amount of solid-hologram locations, Mr. Logan has dragged enough equipment out here to give the field the look of a Marine training camp. "All right, half-pints. Listen up," he growls. "Course is simple. Start here, over the wall, through the tires, across those planks, and then under the fence. Got a couple robots on lone from Chu- from the Professor to slow ya down, so watch out fer 'em."

"Any questions?" Mr. Logan asks, looking around. "Powers're fine," he says in answer to Sam's raised hand, "but you ain't just gonna fly past the whole thing. See those painted signs? You gotta tag each one of 'em fer it ta count." Sam's cocky expression fades as she realizes that the signs are positioned in such a way that she'll have to go through most of the course on foot like everyone else.

As your physical fitness teacher checks his clipboard and readies his whistle, you take stock of your fellow students, all poised at the ready in one large splash page!

    * Sam (your best friend at this place, whose singular power is her ability to fly!)
    * Ricardo (a hotheaded young man with the power of kinetic manipulation!)
    * Clarissa (a chatty tomboy who can speak the secret language of machines!)
    * Luke and Mary Ann (two inseperable young telepaths who share a common mind!)
    * Caleb (a brooding young man whose powers are yet a mystery!)
    * Noah (Caleb's older brother, whose touch transforms him into a duplicate of anyone!)

*FWEEET!* Mr. Logan blows his whistle and the students scramble forward!

Roll a d100 to see how well you start things off, Aino! To roll, put noko dice 1d100 in the email field.

Your first few steps are slow, as you concentrate on expanding your sphere to envelop the timestream around everyone in the group - and with the slightest twinge of effort you drag your local corner of the universe to a standstill, leaving you and Sam unaffected in the bubble of realtime in the center of the frozen world. Around you the explosion of superpowered teenagers hangs in the air like a three-dimensional snapshot, intent faces all staring forward unseeing.

"Oh geez," Sam says, looking around at her frozen classmates and realizing what you just did. "I guess we don't have to worry about coming in last, huh?" she asks, grinning at you before pointing up to the top of the wall to where the first painted sign is affixed.

"Oh, hey!" Sam says, flying back just to the edge of Mr. Logan's immobilized form, to where a coil of rope left over from rigging up the course sits curled on the wet grass. With a smirk she carries it up to the top of the wall and ties it around a protruding beam nailed to the back of the wall and throws it down to you. With no hurry and Sam's shouts of encouragement you easily climb up the wall, and once you're on the other side Sam tosses the rope back down to Mr. Logan's feet.

"OK, ready," she says, positioning herself to spring forward as soon as you release the tachyon field around the two of you. Like Atlas shrugging off the weight of the world you relax your grip and time surges forward again, and with it your classmates come spilling over the wall!

Ahead of you is the familiar minefield of car tires seen in any B-movie training montage - you have just enough time before the other students overtake you to notice Mr. Logan glance down at the rope by his feet!

As Sam flits by ahead of you, a squat robot erupts from the ground at the edge of the tires and begins lobbing a volley of softball-sized projectiles at her!

As she struggles to disentangle herself the robot aims at you and fires - but as the projectile approaches it slows and hangs motionless, but only for a moment until you grab it and hurl it back at the 'bot! Its head spins around crookedly and repositions itself, temporarily hindered!

Ricardo ducks under a volley aimed at him from a second robot that emerges between the edge of the tires and the planks spanning a trench just in front of him, taking the lead! "Too slow!" he calls to you as he begins running across a narrow plank to the far side!

On the other side Clarissa carefully picks her way across the tires, as the robot PHOOT PHOOT PHOOTs volley after volley of projectiles on either side of her, avoiding her outright!

Ricardo is almost at the end of the plank by the time you and Sam reach it, and Clarissa is in second place, trying as best as she can to stay on it as it bounces up and down! Suddenly, another robot emerges on each side of her - and Clarissa only has time to look at one of them before she's knocked off into the trench!

You step onto the edge of the beam just as Ricardo steps off the edge, twenty feet in front of you! As Sam flits up and down trying to distract one of the robots, the other begins firing at you!

Blood pounds in your ears as tears well up and stream down your cheeks, but all that falls away as your grim determination takes hold of the tachyon field and seizes it like a noose, drawing it up and catching everyone on the course!

On the far side of the fencing the orange goal flag stretches out in mid-flap, and a foot away from it Ricardo hangs in the air where he dived just as you caught him in your temporal trap!

With a glance up at Sam you climb back up on the plank, slap the marker, and let the timestream carry you forward!

Ricardo hangs in the air at waist height as you walk past him, his fingers stretching out to grab the flag. Exhausted and bruised, you can barely hold back the weight of the timestream...

Ricardo's face is a mask of exhilaration and pride as he leaps forward, clasping his fingers closed around - nothing?

He drops to the ground awkwardly, momentum carrying him a few inches through the wet grass to your feet, where you and Sam stand laughing, holding the flagpole between you! As Ricardo scrambles to get to it the two of you dodge back, shrieking with laughter as he slips again!

Clarissa is able to grab it before he can stand up, and from halfway back up the course Mr. Logan blows his whistle.

"Oh man, I am SO glad it's lunchtime," Sam says, wiping her brow with her arm.

Megan's conversation skills are a little lacking - you can't tell if she's just naturally shy or being isolated from everyone has that effect on her. Luckily for you Sam is there to keep the conversation going, even if she's the only one speaking. Eventually you touch on the subject of her enclosure, and she brings out her "diving suit" - a rather cumbersome full-body suit that encloses even her head.

"So this is it," she says, standing on the outside of her glass room for the first time in your presence. "I mean, if you two want to go do something else, I understand..."

Naturally you wouldn't have that happen, so you and Sam lead her out of the room and down to see the Professor about this idea.

    "I see..." he says.

"I'm sorry, girls, but if anything were to happen to the suit - a power failure, a malfunction of any kind - Megan's presence would put those nearby in jeopardy."

"That was exactly what we thought of, Aino," the Professor responds. "Unfortunately the Sentinel is designed to be largely tamper-proof - it will obey Clarissa's orders to a point, but it seems incapable of betraying its true masters, and like a cancer its original programming reasserts itself again and again."

"I think you should rest up a bit more before taking on the Danger Room," he says when you mention it. "Though Megan - if you care to try it out meet me there in five minutes. You girls may watch with me," he says, turning and floating in his hover-chair toward the door.

"A colleague of mine named Ms. Frost. She is headmaster of another school similar to this one in Massachusetts, but while her class is in Madagascar she is available," the Professor says as you all exit his office.

A few minutes later, you, Sam and the Professor look down from the Danger Room's window to Megan in her suit. On a pedestal next to her is a simple-looking bracelet. "All right, Megan," the Professor's voice echoes in your heads. "You may remove your containment suit."

Megan looks around, concerned for a moment, then hesitantly breaks the seals and removes it. Instantly arcs of lightning begin to leap from her body to the walls of the Danger Room, sending up blinding flashes of light! She grasps the bracelet and locks it closed around her wrist, and suddenly -

"I think we can assume that it's working," the Professor thinks to you all.

After a few more equally dramatic tests the bracelet seems to be doing its job admirably, and you and Sam race down to the Danger Room to give Megan her first real human contact in months!

"I'm sorry, I don't mean to be reading your mind, but I don't want to go to New York," Mary Ann says while Luke mouths the words along with her, trying his best to be silent and let her speak by herself. Having witnessed the successful test of Megan's new bracelet you've set about cornering all the other girls in the School to bring them with - and Mary Ann had the luck of being the first one you found!

"It's just that there are so many people, and their thoughts get really overwhelm-," the two of them say at once, before realizing that they're speaking in unison again.

"Sure I'll go!" Clarissa shouts happily when you ask her a few minutes later in the next panel. "Oh man, do you think your parents would let us go to Four Freedoms Tower?"

Well, she's not -that- good. She confused Clarissa and Sam.

But, darn it LukeMaryAnn! Tell us these things!

    >When can we expect the next thrilling issue, Doc? The Penguin cultists need to know!

Don't wark about it, fella! If those emergency donut supplies come through we're looking at two issues in two days! Even if we can't get our hands on those delectable delicacies it seems like Friday is an easy win!

    Thanks for reading!

Ms. Frost would like us to point out (and is in no way threatening us with mental and bodily harm at this moment) that you can pin that one on a writer's gaffe!

As for our favorite pair of permanently placed psychics (wait, that's not alliteration!) I guess only time will tell what they meant!

    Dear Prof!

I had an argument with a friend and we were wondering what is Aino's favorate food. I said it was Puffin, and my friend said it was Yogurt.

    Food Argument from Franklin.

    >Dear X.

    >As much as I enjoy your series, I have a better idea for the name of next issue. "New York Minute".

    >Also I have the usual question that at what time will you guys publish said issue?

Not bad! "Big City Blues, Part Two: New York Minute!" Sounds like an Oscar-winner to me! But then again, I thought Howard the Duck deserved best picture! As our last letter-writer asked, we're hoping for a Tuesday issue, but it's almost assured that Aino will be back before the week is up!

Great to hear that your animated action is accelerating, Time! Keep us posted on where we can catch reruns!

An interesting argument, my culinary questioner! Aino's current favorite food is no doubt the delicious BLTs that Sam makes, but we might find out more about her undoubtedly novel palate in the next issue!

I'm sure it's only coincidental that when I leaned on my keyboard it spelled out "soupEng son,".

    Thanks for the quest Prof!
On another note, I've been thinking about running a quest myself, sci-fi to be precise. If, God forgive, no game tomorrow, I'll start it 13.30, 14.00 board time, and I'd appreciate it if the Mutie quest patrons would check it out.

Science fiction, eh? There aren't any facehuggers, are there? We watched that at the office party last month and we STILL can't get our copy editor to come out of his office!

Thanks for keeping up with us, True Believer!

That's it for this issue, folks! Next time, Aino and her friends tangle with the Ghost of George Washinto- wait, that's Scooby-Doo and his friends!

I know I have the script for the next issue around here somewhere...

Hoo boy! The moral of the story is: don't run a quest on an empty stomach! I haven't seen this many mistakes in a comic book since Nicieza was writing New Mutants!

I'm running out to grab a bite to eat, then I'll be back for any other mischief people want to get up to.

Depends. If I'm running CoC, and one of the players likes ponies, then a definite yes.

Oh yeah, quick question to all you Mutie fans: what is it that you find most important in good quests. For example, lot of player input in main char's creation, interesting plot hook at the start, etc.

I've thought about letting /co/ in on this, but in this age of heavy moderation I wouldn't want to pick up an all-board ban for off-topic posting by making a thread over there.
