It's appropriate for the setting, considering how Japan had a God-Emperor, a xenophobic and genocidal empire and a caste of honor-obsessed warriors who comprised a feudal system.

I've been reading Savage Scars and it mentions how the main character thinks the Tau fight honorably even though they're dirty xenos. So they do regard honor pretty highly. Also you could say in the background for them that their home world was a recruiting world for the White Scars and during one of the foundings the Scars just let them break off and form their own chapter.

Dishonoured/failed Space Marine Scouts are sent to do kamikaze missions to redeem themselves. A large built (even for a Space Marine) for their chapter master/Shogun. I'd love a Samurai-themed Imperial Guard regiment, but they'd need to use solid ammunition or something, so they have a reason to use their swords when they run out of Ammo.

Thousands of Guardsmen brandishing swords charging a Tau gunline and hacking them to bits despite heavy losses, thanks to the warrior code of their home planet equating surrender or retreat as worse than death.

    Would be badass.

I hate to say it but the space wolves dex would be fucking GREAT for this chapter.

Wolf Guard would represent the various 1st company clansmen joining various squads and such and would justify why the wolf guard would always have such drastically differing gear.

The basic grey hunter would also make for a great samurai-esque profile seeing as samurai are famed (somewhat stereotypically but w/e) for using bows before melee combat ensued.

Thunderwolves could be the cavalry element? (or just not use them at all w/e tg thinks would work)

And the bloodclaws could be the kamikaze soldiers hellbent on getting their honour back.

Likewise the lone wolf could be a 1st company clansmen doing the same thing (but more epicly seeing as he has fallen so far from grace).

Fluffwise would this chapter command the loyalty of a minor guard regiment? (japanese guardsmen) Seeing as this kind of society would have plenty of ppl willing to fight but unable to get into the much sought after rank of astarte, I could see them having an "ashigaru" aspect to their overall force.

To all the people saying dragonoughts are better than sumonoughts: Imagine being on a battlefield and seeing a large dragon's head, shooting burst of what appears to be fire. This is not scary to a group of battle hardened Chaos Space Marines which see warp beasts all the time.

Imagine, instead, seeing a dreadnought charge into your Khorne possessed raging Chaos dreadnought. You think this enemy dreadnought to be foolish, and idiotic. You see your Chaos dreadnought grapped, and shoulder thrown into your own troops, with the mechanised scream of "BANZAI!" echoing through the battlefield.

    Very successfully

According to history, Date not only survived all the bullshit that went down, but he managed to schmooze both Hideyoshi and Ieyasu - even after basically giving both of them the finger on seperate occasions - and was awarded the Sendai province, which became incredibly successful mostly because he was open to trade from the West despite nominally supporting Ieyasu's ban on Christian practice. He wrote a letter to the pope and sent a fairly large delegation to the Vatican in the interest of setting up trade, and he basically trolled everyone, ever, hard. He was notorious for his reckless approach to battle, as well, but successful despite it.

Also, he either cut out his own eye or had a servant do it for him with a knife because it was hopelessly infected. At like, age 7.

And he wasn't even supposed to inherit the clan. His mother favored another brother on account of that brother had two eyes, but Masamune wasn't going to put up with that shit.

Could explain the White Scar origins really well actually. The local WW2 era japanese guard can't hold the shrine world due to their constant lack of soldiers (banzai charges and whatnot) so the white scars are tasked with protecting it and over time they just let those they assigned to protect it hundreds of years earlier form their own chapter.

I seriously fucking approve of this thread. Samurai inspired Space Marine chapter. I also agree with the gentleman who suggest Space Wolves would be a better fit for them as well as the idea of them using the White Scars (another asian themed chapter) as their Geneseed.

Due to the modernness of the weapons, I'd also highly recommend looking at how Japan fought during World War 2, where the old codes clashed with new technology and they had to strike a balance.

I'm also all behind an IG regiment from the same planet, as 'Samurai' is a social class and only they can become Space Marines, everyone else who wants to be a warrior has to either prove themselves of join the IG. If only you could still play Allies, IG regiment from this planet, lead by a Space Marine 'Samurai' General...

Anime and manga at this point wasn't mainstream but a cool thing that nerds were trading on beta tapes.

This Rising Sun guard would allow an interesting scenario; The Tau that are generally seen as the weeaboo wannabe-japs, would try to capture the guardsmen alive before they can disembowel themselves, reversing the stereotypical Murkan Guard - Jap Tau roles.

Also, how about some sort of a kamikaze Penal regiment? I admit, honorable death by explosions would be closer to the original Imperial Army but still...the mental image of screaming guardsman being forced to a plane filled with explosives...grimdark.
    >> Anonymous 04/18/11(Mon)07:55 No.14632903
    >>14632884

I propose that the Rising Sons battle-barges use macro cannon projectiles that are manned with a kamikaze volunteer that uses a small thruster to nudge the warhead in a more accurate direction. A lot of people want to die for the Emperor, here they get the chance to deliver a couple tons of explosive power to the enemy.

One can point out that macro cannon rounds are accelerated to near lightspeed, and so anyone inside would be liquified soon after leaving the barrel. I guess that only adds to the grimdark of it all.
