    217 KB Abyssal Jaws 4 Anonymous 04/15/11(Fri)20:32 No.14606889
Founded in the 33rd Millenium when a lone Administratum clerk found a fragment of the text "Call of Cth-", the High Lords were notified and geneseed of the Blood Angels began being stockpiled for the founding of the Abyssal Jaws. Since its founding the Chapter has made itself known for its vicious tenacity in close range combat and specilation in aquatic enviroments as well as its open disregard for the Codex with its numbers being several times over the stipulated 1,000.

    +++++DESIGNATION: SVX71/55/DVII-13-T++++++
USER: <REDACTED BY ORDER OF THE INQUISITION>
SUBJECT: Adeptus Astartes of Maresia, Entry 13
++Thought for the Day: A mind without purpose will wander in dark places.++

The Red Thirst tends to affect the Abyssal Jaws less often than other successor chapters of the Blood Angels. It would be a grave mistake to assume their gene-seed has miraculously been saved from this fate. No, it is quite the opposite. The Abyssal Jaws seem to be spared the curse of Red Thirst much in the same way that a man is spared the curse of suffocation while he is in an oxygenated atmosphere. They surround themselves with so much carnage that they have drank their fill of bloodlust to the point that it's almost impossible to tell if an Abyssal Jaw in the grips of the Red Thirst or not.

The Black Rage is known to the Abyssal Jaws as "The Call of the Deep". Thier minds do not call back to the boiling cauldron of fury that death of Sanguinius left on all who share his gene-seed, no, they are instead filled with a frigid, inevitable purpose like the crushing grasp of the deepest trenches of Maresia. They are called to those depths to do battle with the blasphemous eldritch horrors that sleep beneath the waves. None shall stand in their path lest they too be devoured by this cold fury or so it is said.

I know not much else of the fate of those claimed by such a state, the locals dare to say no more than cryptic statements that they have gone to join Lord Cartographer Achab's crusade in the Forbbiden Depths. (note: Abyssal Jaw's Chief Libraian, lost to the warp though it within reason to presume he dead).

Noxyssus is temperate world about 50% the size of Earth but its made of far denser material (where as Maresia is fuck huge and its core isn't very dense at all). It's atmosphere contains numerous acidic compounds though most life on the planet has adapted to the harsh conditions to cover the planet in marshes, swamps, and bogs. The oceans of Noxyssus, like Maresia, have ancient alien and eldritch tombs/temples/secretbases lurking in their depths. Ancient manuscripts that have been unearthed have accounts of a key stored somewhere on Noxsyssus.

Additionally the planet is a great place to train the Abyssal Jaws in non-aquatic methods of warfare and hone their abilities on the countless monstous beasts that dwell there.

While many Space Marine chapters practise cannibalism in some form, be it the blood drinking rituals of the aptly-named Blood Drinkers, or the consumption of human flesh by Imperial Fist cadets, to the horrific ritual which saw the <REDACTED BY ORDER OF THE INQUISITION>, none are more dedicated to the art of devouring their fellow man as the Abyssal Jaws.

It is unknown how the cannibalistic rituals of the Abyssal Jaws originally came into existence; the native population of Maresia having never be known to practise cannibalism during their recorded history.

However, some believe that the cannibalism stems from the Chapters interpretation of the twin curses that affect all successors of the Blood Angels, known as “The Call of the Deep” to the Abyssal Jaws. In battle the Abyssal Jaws will enter a berserk fray in combat rivalled only by the Death Companies of their fellow successors. As a direct effect of the insanity that infects their minds during battle, outside of combat the Abyssal Jaws are noticeably irritable, easily angered and prone to violent spasms.

However, having participated in the Feast of a Hundred, (where sacrifices (usually family members of one of the many noble houses on Maresia) are divided into a hundred individual pieces, until every member of the chapter has their own portion of human flesh to eat, emulating the piranhas of their home world) a noticeable change of personality occurs.

Marines who were often restless and on edge had suddenly become amiable and passionate, creating works of art or composing music. Members of the chapter could be seen conversing with members of the noble houses, or reading stories to children. The sheer contrast between the psychotic Abyssal Jaws and the benevolent Abyssal Jaws is almost absurd.

While tests have been performed in an attempt to work out why cannibalism has such a positive effect on them, the results have revealed little, some going so far to theorise that the consumption of flesh acts as a placebo for the chapter. Either way, the questions surrounding the chapter remain unanswered and as far as the Abyssal Jaws remain concerned, they'd be happy if it stayed that way.

They were Chaos worshippers and they ate the Inquisitor alive in a Chaos ritual. The Sons of Malice aren't misunderstood good guys, they -are- followers of Malal (they fight Chaos and the Imperium both, that doesn't make them any less crazy than normal fanatical Chaos marines).

Most of the argument was based on the WS4 Celestians' Holy Hatred (hitting non-MC/IC units on 3+ regardless of WS).

There was also this regarding fluff instead of game mechanics:

    >Stormtroopers are the best non-Sororitas soldiers in the Imperium. Basic Battle Sisters are equal to Stormtroopers in terms of training, discipline and skill (with Stormtroopers of course having superior spec-ops ability), and superior to them in equipment and motivation. Seraphim are even better than this, pushing human skill and agility in power armor to Astartes level (superior, in fact, in terms of agility). And Celestians are better, in terms of raw skill, than Seraphim-- beyond the level of the typical Astartes.

I'm a Sisters fan and even I call bullshit. Celestians may be able to take out marines 2:1 but even I don't say they are even. Marines are superhumanly strong and tough. Sisters can't manage that without pulling a living saint.

Yes, hence the 2:1 odds. That's making the assumption that thier faith allows them to go beyond normal human levels. Most humans would be lucky to manage 10:1 odds against a marine.

Though there is the occasional case of a Sister going crazy and flipping out and killing entire squads of marines but this is discounting Sister Sin or Seraphim Stern.

The hive tyrant slaying from 2e comes closest, but that's a mundane synapse beast spawned in untold numbers, hardly a more worthy adversary than generic warboss/chaos marine 123456.

There is a whole range of strength and ability within the single numbers. The entire range of human strength and endurance, from the peasant broken by malnutrition and cruel labour to the arms-like-your-thighs physique of the average Stormtrooper, fits neatly within S3 T3. The other stats don't cover so much range as this, but there's still a whole lot of scope for something to be better than something else within that range.

Sisters of Battle are the best humanity can produce without them starting to become physiologically inhuman, be that as outwardly as the Space Marine, or with the fiendish subtlety of the Officio Assassinorum assassins. Sure, the Space Marine bellcurve has its midpoint well above that of humanity proper, but every bellcurve has its high endpoint, and the elite ranks of the Sisters of Battle are it for humanity. I don't have trouble imagining that some of their best can be a match for a standard Space Marine.

Welp, this is my contribution to the Jaws. Like it, hate it, retcon it at will. I don't really care.
It was whispering to him now. Cold, unfeeling. Tendrils in his mind, grabbing aimlessly at thoughts.

Everything else seemed like static in comparison. The screaming, the shouting, the roar of bolterfire. Go a little further, it said. Just a bit more, it echoed. At first, he was surprised, wary. But as the voice spoke, and everything seemed to become insignificant, he realized, almost belatedly, he had become incredibly calm. Everything felt as though it was as it should be. Like pieces falling into place...

It was waiting for him. He didn't know where... he just had to keep going. Further. Deeper.

How far had he traveled now? It didn't matter. The voice was louder, and he started to see, but what he saw, he could not describe with words or thoughts. He raised his bolter, and he let loose with all the rounds he could unleash.

Just a bit more, it said. Just a bit further, it echoed.

The 'so faithful that they can slightly bend reality' thign is part of the fluff, albeit that it's not nearly as prevalent as Faith powers in the rules. It tends to be the domain of their more notable heroes, and of Sisters in impossible situations. The way it's presented is that, instead of the standardish 'wow that was pretty badass' most other factions get, they get mostly sensible-ish victories appropriate to their discipline and skill, anbd the occasional HOW THE FUCK victory that they had no right to pull off whatsoever.

Ahriman doesn't blast entire armies to ribbons because he's not so lacking in class and distinction. Hell, he's so insanely understanding of power and fate that I doubt he ever needs to bother using his powers at all any more.

    >Kathal, Captain of the First Company of the Sons of Malice, led the chapter victory rites, which bordered on cannibalism, observed by Inquisitor Pietas, a senior member of the Ordo Hereticus. Although flesh-eating rituals are not uncommon among the Space Marines, Pietas was obviously unacquainted with the barbarous customs of Space Marines and mobilized a strike force of Adepta Sororitas Celestians to deal with the "heretics". The Sisters made planetfall right in the midst of the Company at the height of their celebrations. Kathal and his troops responded to the interference of their sacred Chapter rites by savagely attacking the strike force, defeating the Celestians. Kathal dragged the meddling Inquisitor before the chapter altar where she was ritually sacrificed.

It was the Inqusitors fault that the Sons of Malice went renegade.

The Eldritch Abomination sealed in the deepest trenches of Maresia needs to be something that draws the attention of both Chaos and the Eldar. It could very well be a minor Eldar god that was sealed on the world aeons ago for some crime against the rest of the Eldar pantheon. It could also just as easily be a 'dead' minor chaos god that has been sealed in the there for aeons before the fall of the Eldar.

Similar to the Dragon on mars, it's infecting people on the planet, including marines, with visions of a necrontyr city that's sunk to the depths of the planet (possibly due to massive planetary damage during battle with Old Ones, making massive craters that formed huge oceans)

Chapter feels Call of the Deep, with Marines going down to the Necontyr city to battle the C'Tan.

"THE BEAST RISES!" Brother-Librarian Mosig shouted over the crashing waves of that were common around the great Achab Maelstrom.

"NONE ESCAPE THE CRUSHING DEPTHS!" replied a chorus of his battle-brothers emerging from the foamy waters, chain-hooks and blasting harpoons in hand as they swam toward the rocky shores lined with the dread beasts summoned by the sorcery of the dark god's cultists.

The beasts roared their own reply as they lept forward to meet the oncoming swarm. The Abyssal Jaws tore into the front line with frenzied abandon as their harpoon dug deep into the tentacled mutants before the explosive charge on its tip went off to create a shower of gore and blood. Mosig readied his own chain-hook and threw it rocketing toward the hulking form of a cultist warped by sorcery in the background that stood above the rest. It connected with a bloody splat as its clawed fingers dug into its flesh and pulled the cord taugt to launch him forward to meet it head on.

It screamed out shrilly and battered Mosig with bolts of warp energy but it wasn't enough to stop him from landing the reved up toothed saw on his gauntlet into its face. "WHAT NOW HERETIC?" Mosig roared with laughter as he sawed the sorceror's skull open at its brow. "YOUR GODS ARE WEAK BEFORE THE CRUSHING PRESSURE OF THE EMPEROR'S MIGHT!" He grabbed it by the neck and tore its skull off only to toss it aside.

The other beasts were fairing just about as well under the frenzied onslaught of the Abyssal Jaws as the carved through them in a shower of blood and torn flesh. The seas would run red tonight.

Is there any history of Necro lords spreading mind messages across whole planets?

The C'Tan lead is the most reasonable if we go Necrontyr route seeing as how there's background for the Dragon influencing human minds with thoughts of technology.

The other option is to go right back in 40k canon. A possible Slann, sleeping in the ruins of an Old Slann city/temple and sending out a kind of unconcious psychic beacon.

The idea of warp gods doesn't sit well considering they're tied into the warp and so wouldn't physically exist in reality.

A bound daemon/greater daemon might also make sense, but it'd have to be a very powerfull daemon bound to a pretty big/strong artefact since moat daemon artefacts (bound weapons for example) can only communicate/influence in close proximity, usually touch.

as far as canbalisms goes, maybe a way for criminals and other ne'erdowells on Maresia who want a chance to prove their faith to emperor can undergo a ritual in which the ritualistically remove a limb and offer it to the Abyssal Jaws. If they are indeed pure in their faith then the Abyssal Jaw will be unable to consume their flesh (rationalized that they are only to bear their teeth against enemies of the Emperor).

The brother-librarian shifted fitfully in his sleep, eyes clamped shut as a cold, clammy sweat gripped him.

He writhed uncomfortably, unable to drift off into complete sleep, for every time he closed his eyes it was there.

It; Baroque and massive, obsese and horrid. The thing looked like some horrid mutant spawned of nightmares.

It was part man, part frog, and disgusting through and through. The thing was massive, sitting atop a stone throne, bulging, rheumy eyes shut tight as its bloated throat swelled with each ragged, gasping breath.

Every so often a cracked, oozing tongue would slip out between chapped, slimy lips, licking against the thing's sore-ridden belly.

And then he would wake up, just as the creature's eyes opened. '

    blah blah blah.

    i'm out of bran muffin.

Make them like pirahna. Not the 'EAT IT TO THEBONE INSTANTLY' way, but how they'll pick fins and scales and bits of meat off of things unless they have blood in the water.

Except they cut off the body parts of criminals to teach them a lesson instead.

Deep within the crevasses of Maresia's equatorial oceans lies an ancient and long forgotten secret.

Miles beneath the deepest of ocean hives lie ruins of an ancient civilisation. Worn away by tidal forces and crushing pressure, any explorator vessels that even attempted to search te area would see nothing more then boulders, miming the shapes of pillars and walls.

Further still, carved deep into the side of the crevass cliffs, lies the ruined entrance to a great temple. Corroded suits of armour surround stone doors, the few discernable details on their surface ghosting the shape of the Astartes.

Through the stone doors, a water flooded passage leads almost endlessly forward. Eons ago, the passage way would have been lined with torches and braziers. Long since eaten away by rust, only green and orange tinged sand remains, covering the floor in a macabare 'mosaic' (continued)

    >>14616734
Deeper into the passage, more Pieces of armour litter the floor. Some with little enough corrosion to make out the silver grey of ceramite, others no more then rock like husks. Of the remains of the wearers suits, there is no sign, the bones joining the sea dust that lines the passage.

After many kilometers, the passageway finally ends. One great door blocks futher entry, sealing out the ocean water.

Behind this door lies a sleeping giant. A great beast, sitting upon a throne of marble worn by the eons. Where once was fine carvings in it's surface, only coral like cracks, bubbles and humps remained.

Of the beast itself, it's size dwarfed space marine dreadnaughts and tyranid carnifexes alike.

The features of both man and frog combined, the ancient xenos sat upon webbed legs, with a great rotund middrift and bulbous head.

Of note, however, were the long tentacles the descended from it's front nostrils. Almost octopus like in appearance, they seemed at one both a perfectly natural feature, and a strange and abnornaml mutation.

Eyes closed, the beast remained motionless, the only sign of life coming from a slight tremble as it breathed once maybe every hour or so.

But in it's mind, a great war wages....

Awesome, I've wanted to make a Chapter dedicated to keeping Cthulhu down for a while. But I always imagined it as being separate from Chaos. Kind of like The Harrowing, but with more Shoggoths.

Maybe we could have one of their duties be "Go kill all the Deep Ones/Dagon Cultists on the coastline every hundred years or so." Maybe have them put Elder Signs on everything to ward off Eldritch Abominations.
    >> Anonymous 04/16/11(Sat)22:31 No.14617752
    >>14617643

    An interesting play on this:

Chaos cultists take root, and become pretty badass due to being in a constant cultist gang war with Cthulhu/Hastur/Dagon cults that don't appreciate the Chaos Gods muscling in on their turf. A Warband of Khorne Berzerkers hears about this highly competent Cult and portals there for half the sacrifices they normally charge. Eldritch Cultists get wind of this and decide to nip that shit in the bud, Que Berzerkers getting swarmed by Shoggoths and Tentacle-covered Cthulhu Cultists coming up out of the sewers.
