In game we recently encountered a character who made me question the feasibility and our safety.

She has a strange latent magic that allows her to leech people's actual stats overtime through interaction. So talking with her, causes you to decrease in Charisma while she increases. This is a permanent change, so I'm inclined to believe that all her stats are into triple digits or above.

This is just a basic summary, there's lot's of different details and circumstances to better explain it, but I was wondering if this was possible, and if so how should we regard her? We encountered her about a few games ago and some of us are leery of coming into contact with her.

What a terrible thing for a DM to introduce. You permanently lose stats, no warning, without any kind of conflict? Urgh.

In any case, if you decide to attack her you should not allow saves. She'll pass them all, and the rare chance of a natural 1 can be avoided as easily as one luck feat.

I'm unclear how we would even be able to go about doing that though.

Despite being considered a villain in the setting, she seems nice and friendly enough, however looming overhead is that constant threat she poses.

Even worse is in concentrated doses so to speak, protracted interaction. The dumb bard figured she was worth a shot and tried taking her on a date, which ended with a kiss on the cheek and a thank you for the nice time. In that instant, he went down like 5 CON levels.

As you can see, we have a mixed view of her. Some want to stay away, while others can't let her get away with what she's doing, while others want to interact with her.

I'm just guessing she's in the three digit stats, it might be much higher. As a common practice she enters towns, and spends time living with the people and interacting with them. Overtime eventually, she'll have leeched everyone in town's stats till they hit zeros and die, leaving a ghost town in her wake.

It isn't an intentional magic, it's just a property her body has, so to speak. She can focus it if necessary, as was seen with the bard.

It is intentional. She could just... not do that.

You need to devise a way to destroy her that isn't dependent on saves or any of her numbers which will be arbitrarily high. So ideally, you don't want to roll to hit either. Let's have a think.

The bard was warned several times by all the players, as well as the DM that what he was doing was a bad idea. And all through the date the DM kept bringing up that he kept feeling weaker/dumber/more depressed, etc...

Until at least where he had the option of avoiding a kiss, and the DM made fairly clear that the result wouldn't be good, but he allowed it anyway.

In general I don't think the DM has been unreasonable, this would be the first sort of potential threat like this that we've encountered.

No it's not intentional. The effect she has at least. She was unwillingly forced to be the Champion/avatar of a god of decay. The god was to be slain, but in a last act of "Fuck you!" to the world, he picked some person at random and basically poured into them all his essence.

She turned out to be the one he selected, and didn't even realize it until who knows how long after.

The alternative I suppose, is simply to avoid people. However then she would die eventually. She's only remained alive by doing what she does.

I have no idea. I think her stats are so high that she doesn't really care if being near them for awhile hurts her.

At least a few of the other BBEGs are undead, and she doesn't seem to mind spending time around them.

As for what her stats are, in spending time in a town, depending on the size and type of beings she can go up 1 level in all her stats anywhere from a couple of minutes to a month, depending on how she interacts with them. This is excluding when she makes a consorted effort and can shoot up any number of levels depending on the victim and type of interaction.

Now, apply this effect for a few hundred years. How high could her stats theoretically get? Some of us figure not too high, others figure it's not even both bothering trying to calculate, may as well be infinity.
    >> Anonymous 04/14/11(Thu)16:17 No.14594436
So, what you're saying is, your DM just handed you the greatest weapon ever?

You need this woman on your side. Quest for some kind of enchantment that, if it can't protect you from her abilities, can at least regenerate the loss of stats over time. Have your bard court her, make her fall in love, become loyal to your cause.

Congrats, you can now kill gods.

Assuming this thing has reached a moderate epic level (alive for hundreds of years and all that), and has maybe 500 constitution, you're looking at around 4-6k hitpoints.

Assuming 21 damage on average per casting of Explosive Runes, you'd need about 270 castings, let's say 300 to be safe. (Potentially a lot more if she has any kind of relevant damage resistance).

You also need to cast them on different (ideally very small) objects and use the area dispel trick, since even with 500+ int I imagine its hard to read 300 things at the same time.

A lot of people in the thread don't seem to understand that her stats might as well be considered infinite. Her hit points are jacked as fuck due to her con score. Her physical attributes should be high enough at this point to lift mountains that only takes 150? Str or some shit. This isn't a creature you fight pre epic levels. This /thing/ belongs in the immortals handbook. It also haS a jacked up int, it knows what you are plotting. What a horrifying being. You can't use the targeted version of dispel magic by RAW, since you'll automatically succeed on the dispel checks even though you want to fail. The area version on the other hand lets you opt out of the automatic success, but it only dispels one effect on each object in the area.

But she's also got potentially 500+ Strength, Agility, etc... even if we can deal out the amount of damage to kill her, will she allow that to happen?

Plus that would make her an outright enemy, which I'm not sure if we want. Being near her is cancerous, but she's not hostile to us. And she enjoys the company of the bard.

As said we only recently encountered her, as one of the last BBEGs to be introduced.

That's something I've been very weary of. The current town she's in, the people are all showing the effects of her presence. They're all weak and sickly, anti-social, and pretty dumb.

They're not unaware of the situation, they've had lots of town meetings and get togethers to try and figure out what's happening to all of them. They can't pin it down, or are too dumb to pin it down on the kind, beautiful, smart girl who's been living amongst them, interacting with them and helping them every day.

In fact they like her all the more, for helping them in these trying times for them. It's kind of tragic that in allowing her into their homes to cook for them or clean up, or to take care of their children or sing at the Inn or help around at the market, it's only speeding up the process and effect she has on them.

I consider us blessed that we know what's really up with her.

As some people have posed already, I'm pretty sure the DM wouldn't do anything annoying or stupid. He's a cool guy and knows his shit. If anything, this is just a different sort of challenge he hopes for us to overcome.

And if all else fails, we can always just avoid her. It's not like she's living with us or traipsing around an Empire's capitol or anything.

    >>14594634

She's still like a normal person though, emotionally and mentally (at least in the sense of functionality, interacting with people and such). She can be approached like a normal person and talked to, convinced into doing stuff (going on a date with the bard), made to laugh, argue with on political ideas, whatever.

I mean really all she is, based on my limited understanding of the system, is a commoner with ludicrously high stats. At least story-wise that's what she is. She's never received formal training in anything, she's never been in educational systems.

All she's ever done is just drift from town to town, spending time with people. She may have uber intelligence potential, but I don't think she could know more than what was available in the places she's been.

    >>14594567

I don't think the other BBEGs would be interested in her if she wasn't what we assume her to be. I mean most of them avoid being around her, and at least one of them is a dragon, if not more.

    >>14594616

No he's perma-dead, that's been made distinctly clear. What she has isn't so much his soul or anything, it's not like he impregnated her with his spirit. He just used all his capability and power as a God, mustered into this one curse he put on her. A curse on the world more like, as for her it's worked out rather well.
    >> Anonymous 04/14/11(Thu)16:55 No.14594744
Basically, she's effectively invincible and unstoppable. Her stat mods are high enough that her skills are through the roof, kill you with a single attack with the strength mod alone, and is effectively immune to anything with a save.

And this is only considering her stats. If she took any levels in any spellcaster class, she basically can be assumed to have near unlimited spells up to the highest spell level she can cast via bonus spells per day.

I don't think it's possible to win against or even effect her outside using some no save spell.

First thing is to find some way to protect the party from her bullshit. Construct or undead seems to be the easiest way to go about this, though I'm sure there are plenty others. This is also assuming that this is normal ability drain and not PLOT drain, which then ignore this advice.

Now that you may/may not be protected, the next step is killing her. Assuming she works like some sort of death funnel for this stat drain, it's a possibility she's picking up more than just beneficial stuff. Emotions and force of personally usually are the in game representation of Charisma, so it's a good possibility she's absorbing those. If this is true, you need for her to absorb a metric fuckton of despair and self loathing. We want her to kill herself, since at this point she seems more likely to be able to off herself than anything else and arbitrarily high Con is eventually beaten by arbitrarily high Str.

Another idea might be a bit out of reach at your level, but basically involves shoving her through a Gate spell into another plane.

Huh. I have to agree here.

Soooo... That's hard to deal with - but the question remains, is it her who needs to be dealt with? While she is "in the background", she can be essentialy ignored in favor of dealing with BBEGs. Without a doubt, DM is preparing story that focuses on her - so some plot options/weapons would be provided.
For example, one such a weapon would be "essence of content". What would it be? Something that causes one to lose all the fucks he/it could give and isn't motivated to do anything save his most basic habits (like eating, drinking, looking at the sky - and maybe not even that).
Other would be "essense of regret" that would cause her regret in full all the death and mysery she caused and become an hero.
Other would be "decay obscession", where she would be tempted to experience what others were near her up to the point of an hero'ing herself again.
Messianic route with something like "if she has children, her abilities are passed on/divided between them" is probably possible... on the other hand, scratch that out.

I do not usually cry "Mary Sue" ,but i am very tempted now, to be honest. Embarassing, really

No, it's definitely all stats. She surely has the potential for endless intelligence and wisdom, she just only uses it as far as you would expect in everyday village life.

Essentially, what sort of knowledge and experience would you get from living in towns and cities as a simple commoner for hundreds of years? That's what she has.

We've encountered other characters who had much much much less wisdom in terms of stats, but actually experience a wider range of things than she has so were more troubling in that respect.

Using her intelligence and wisdom she could have pursued things like becoming a master magic user or accomplished scholar in all fields. She just hasn't. She'd rather help people in their bakery, sell things at market, or sweep the floors of the inn.

You know the having kids thing might actually work.

Not that I'm going to, or going to suggest we pursue that route. But a viable thought no less.

As for having the plot focus on her, the only reason she's in the story is because we actively sought her out. It's been our intent to, at the very least, identify all the BBEGs. Naturally it would be too difficult or dangerous with some of them, but we learned of one that was just living with people in a town.

In actuality this was her, but we didn't know so figured we'd check it out. So yes, the only reason she's in the game forefront is because we made it so. We could theoretically just leave her alone. I mean we'd have to deal with her at some point possibly, but it doesn't have to be now.

After confirming the autofail on a natural 1 on will saves, there are actually a decent number of ways to kill her now assuming a combination of brute force and blind luck. Enter Magic Jar.

On her failed save, she's stuck in your little gem while you get her uber body for a few hours. At this point, live out your remaining time recreating Crank in DnD living your life at 999 stats, then near the end of your remaining time, move the magic jar and your old body out of range. This will cause both you and her to die, so it's a noble sacrifice that'll be really fun.

The only major flaw is how much your DM sticks to the rules because he could just as easily say NO U to the 1/20 fail chance.

She is unquestionably the most evil character in the setting simply because she is allowing all of this to happen (fully understanding the consequences) and chooses to ignore it. The only moral solution would be suicide or hermitage. She isn't just a small-town girl who wants a normal life, she is an amoral monster. Her charity is a sick ruse that is either an intentionally cruel ploy to feed or obscenely reckless. Try to convince her to kill herself/leave society. I don't know what kind of setting you are in, but you would think most everything in the setting should be out to erase her from existence so it might be advised to send her even farther away to avoid collateral damage.

Yeah, I like the general concept, too, but its too over the top. It's almost impossible to (role-)play something with >40-50 in any given stat when even 20 is more than any mortal can get IRL.

I'd call bullshit on that if I didn't know that people can be in some pretty massive denial over things.

But my biggest problem is this: I assume that the party is good, or at least mostly. So though leaving her alone for the time being sounds tactically sound, you have to admit that she is a mass murderer(or manslaughterer, if she really doesn't know what she's doing), with a bodycount in, well I don't even know how many digits. What do you guys think, thousands, tens of thousands? Hard to believe she could kill more while remaining unnoticed.

Ignoring her is nearly as wrong as what she is doing. These people are innocent and even "natural" forces can be mitigated for the good of society. Don't tumble into the fallacy that nature=good. Seriously, even my morally dubious characters (never played a paladin) would would probably dedicate their lives to stopping her. Maybe I get too into RP (or am a moralfag at heart), but I'd argue it is metagamey as fuck to simply ignore her.

Also, making her see the horror of what she is doing is probably how I would go about this. Write her a letter, and leave it for her. Make it compelling, tell her the story of some of the people she's harmed, say that you feel sorry for them, and her. Because you have to pity her existence, she never wanted this, and she is missing out on the life she clearly wanted for herself. You feel sorry for her because she will never have companionship, never experience love. But let her know this is no excuse for the actions she has taken, and ask her to quit, by leaving her a gift: A bag of holding, and a portable hole

She sticks to the fringes of society, as said she hasn't hit up any cities for a good while. Mostly it's just little settlements and border towns. Heck sometimes she doesn't even stay if the place is too big or she begins to draw attention. She'll just move on.

Bullshit. More than any other BBEG in the setting she is evil, so make her publicly known. You individually can't do much, but you can sure as hell find someone who can. I'm in agreement with the people who are screaming CALL THE INEVITABLES because you could easily find a wizard that could settle that. She needs to be stopped in some way or another. If I were you, I'd be willing to derail a campaign to go on this quest (which could be fun for both the players and the DM), but if you care about legitimately roleplaying, you should try to do whatever you can to stop her.

Yea, you could have your stats go as high as you want. But for all intents and purposes, this character is basically a god now.

There is actually a fantasy novel series that has a theme similar to this called Runelords. A person can give another person an endowment of charisma or strength via a magical tatoo.

The character your DM is using is bullshit. There is nothing to balance her abilities or even allow you to fight her. You might as well kill everything else on that plane so she can't get any stronger, then kill yourselves too so she's forever alone and trapped there.

People love her wherever she spends time, I already said that. Hell, just walking through a town you get kids playing around her, people approaching her asking how she is, who she is, and in general just trying to attract her attention or notice her. Same thing happened with the bard.

Despite the fact that she is a cancerous presence, people still fight one another to be near her. Not literally fight but you know what I mean. Word of her usually doesn't spread because she kills people that approach her, most not wanting to leave her presence.

The BBEGs are like a consortium of similarly-minded villains, some more appropriate to the group than others. This woman being a good example.

More or less though, they're comprised of around one member of each race, an individual looking to take over the world or destroy it or something. Essentially the baddest guy or girl from each race, working together. Some of the races have more than one (humans in this case, one of each gender, this woman and a bad guy). But that's roughly the idea.

All in all though none of the individuals in the group really like each other, so getting them to fight, or even just fight her shouldn't be THAT difficult.

It's your duty to the world to destroy her. All your craft as murderous hobos must be bent to this task. I'd suggest suffocating or drowning her. Things she is limited by:

    1 in 20 failed saves
Max speed (still 30 ft. I presume)
    No save effects
    Incorporeal Creatures

Personally I'd suggest controlling an allip (has to be actually controlled, she might lolcharisma it otherwise) or other similar incorporeal creature and tasking it to just fucking kill her. She consumes life at a slower rate than it takes to spring up though. She's not particular to humans, and she only does one settlement/town at a time, taking from months to years depending on the place. As an overall rule of thumb she follows I think, she prefers to remain at the age she always was. If she over-eats she becomes younger, if she doesn't eat she gets older.

There's never a danger of her "over-eating" and wiping the world clean.

Heck sometimes it's not even towns she may target. We're aware of at least one instance where some adventurers int he past tried to kill her, but she was able to convince them not to and she traveled with them enjoying their time together. All the while though she was invariably draining them to death.

I can't imagine that, spending nights laughing with your good friends over a campfire about dungeoning and dragoning, while in reality you know they're dying because of you.

I just don't think, that we should focus on her right now.

There's a whole world's worth of material in this game that we can focus on. The other BBEGs, the invading hordes, the warring kingdoms, the civil wars, heck even just plain old exploring and adventuring.

Or why not go back to what my original intent was, my current character's revenge for the death of my previous character?

All I'm saying is, do we want to more or less derail the game to deal with this being? While trying to figure out ways to kill her or convince her to do things, we could be heroes of the revolution, riding the high plains in combat against the nomads, or exploring the deepest depths of eldritch dungeons.

But really, I'll do whatever you guys say. Can't say that the whole group will go along with it, but at least some of them seem interested at the very least, in learning more about this entity.

I'd never seen this spell before.

Some quick math shows that this would produce around 7*10^254 cubes. At 1 cubic foot each, that's several orders of magnitude larger than the observable universe (~1x10^82 cubic feet).

I've seen threads like this before, and I'm trying to come up with what benefit you get from posting it. Is this actually happening in a game you're playing in, and you're so passive that you won't actually do anything to harm the DM's waifu? Is there actually no game, and you are posting to have everyone admire your waifu? Are you the DM with the waifu, and you're posting here as a test bed for how people would react? Is this some weird meta-troll that I'm not in on?

It would take a lot of Allips to bring her down. Not only is her Wisdom very high, but they still need to hit her touch AC. I doubt that her ability counts as telepathy for the purpose of triggering Madness, but even if it does, you'll need to do it all in one go *and* trick her into interacting with them in the first place. Unless all her victims are conveniently coming back as Allips, where are you going to get that many Allips?

I just had a thought, why is it that when faced with something that seems impossible to deal with right now, people will go to great lengths to try and deal with it right now?

She's not blatantly evil like the other BBEGs it seems though. Arguably only if she realizes what she's doing. Apparently she lives as a kind young woman about town, helping people and living her days happily and carefree.

Of course, she brings death with her, but she's not just murdering people for sick kicks, it's done in self preservation. In a horrid way to be sure, but not blood-bloodcurdlingly evil.

What race is she, op? If she is a mortal, then she should be dead. I don't care how high your stats are, if you are a mortal that has "lived" for hundreds of years, the only one I can think of is Elves that live that long. If she isn't something that has a natural lifespan that long, I'd be worried about her being undead. Perhaps a lich.

I just came in here asking if this was an actually possible character, so if it wasn't I could call bullshit on it to the DM. If it was, then are we right in being leery of her?

Apparently anything is possible by the DM, which was answered relatively early in the thread, so my main question was settled. Everything after has been people discussing and posting their ideas and opinions of the situation.

An added bonus to my original intent that I've ended up with a lot of possibilities on how to potentially end her.

As stated, draining too many and she gets younger, potentially as young as a baby. Not draining people and she ages as she normally would. She seems to prefer the age she's used to, which appears to be around 18-25.

And theoretically, with all peoples of the world accepting of her, she could just wander around spending only limited time in each place before moving on, all the while acting as the protector of the world.

Her time spent in your city is just like a tax to be paid to her for watching your ass.

Her stats should be in the middle tenths. Character stats should increase exponentially, and not geometrically. it is way harder to go from 18 to 19 than to 10 to 11, at least, it happens way less. The idea of a direct transfer of stats is retarded. So, if she sucks three points of intelligence from a simpleton (int:7), she could go, let's say from 1078 to 1081? She must probably suck a lot of stat points to gain a new stat advancement.

Wouldn't that be an endless progression?

At that point, they've got each other, and can subsist off one another indefinitely. Then why would they care about the world or anyone else anymore?

Makings of BBEGs if ever I saw it.

There aren't really gods around anymore in the setting.

I mean they're there for sure, and people worship them and all. But they don't really come down and interact with people and live among them like back in the day when she was cursed in the first place. Around that time, was the decline of things.

The decay god wasn't content with that, so made her to carry on his legacy in the world. Or at least, that's how the stories go.

If you have an NPC that is immensely intelligent, you should pull shit like that. In the same vein, if a player's character is smarted than the player, the DM should offer insight into things the player might not have figured, but the character woud.
