Have to agree with you there, pic related. The broad division of japanese/western has never made any sense to me. Regardless of country of origin, all animation is moving pictures.

Styles vary hugely by era, studio, and budget; you can find exceptions for any case. The Last Unicorn for example, a western production, looks very similar to early 70s animation from Japan - unsurprisingly many of the animators from Topcraft went on to get employment at Studio Ghibli.

It's good OP at least includes a pictorial example of the aesthetic he's looking for is. A picture says much more than a loose regional definition ever could.

Hopefully it's very abundantly clear from all the examples being posted, mine and others, that regional bias has very, very little to do with the given look of a series. Really, the look of the series is more influenced by:


a) time period - due to both trends in style and the
sophistication of equipment available. Compare the Snow Queen with any early Disney films.

and more importantly,
b) the target audience. A lot of Japanese anime that comes out looks similar because they're all targeting the same market. A work like Inaka Ishak, which is definitely avant-garde stuff, doesn't even bother. The NHK-funded Planetes was meant to draw in a mainstream audience so again, the more highly stylized elements were omitted.

Conversely, the Canadian 6teen is drawn for a tween audience and it absolutely shows.

And here is a 'manga'-like local comic, Garudayana. Note that both have local content (Caroq is actually a kind of warrior from Madura, while Garudayana's storyline is based on the Mahabarata), and that Caroq is made in the 90s, while Garudayana is made in the 2000s.

And then there's some old ones that look like Corto Maltese. Mostly made in the fifties, sixties, and seventies. Pic is Panji Tengkorak, a martial artist/warrior who used a skeleton mask.

Yeah, sadly it stopped at its second book due to the artist not getting enough income from it. The 90s' Indonesian comic market was dominated by manga such as Doraemon, Dragon Ball, Pokemon etc. with a few Manhwa and Chinese comics towards late 90s. Local comics did rule during the 50s till 70s though, and now it shows some pulses... albeit most of local comic now looks like manga.
Sad to see how Indonesian comics declined like that.
Anyways, any other countries experiencing something like this?

Britfag here. 2000AD is still doing pretty well, and the children's comedy comics are going strong, but everything else is slowly dying. All our good writers are published by Americans.

Germany/Austria here. Homegrown comics? ...well, there's photo comics in Youth magazins. Everything else is being imported. Manga gave the scene a bit of a stimulus, but most of the smart kids switch to illustration as the pay's better, you actually get respect by your peers for it and the publishers don't want you to deliver them according to japanese scedules either.

If somebody's good and trying to live on his work, he or she's usually trying to publish in France and in french.

the Situation is not quite as dire in Switzerland, at least circa..I think circa since the 90s.

I always liked the Legend of Zelda artwork that got done by fans and official artists alike. There's just something about a nigh-suicidally heroic guy that doesn't have a thing to say about anything that I find awesome, regardless of how it's drawn.

Uh, the old art was "stereotypical anime" for the 80s too... styles change. Although the really early art from the NES version had very little stylization, admittedly. But Link has always had an anime look similar to the era of anime he's been in.

That is not a singular occurrence in any way but a common pattern. Cafés call a drink "chai" that is a special kind of tea, while the word itself just means tea in places which traditionally make tea in a way roughly similar (hopefully) to the drink the Western cafés sell as chai. It is exactly the same.
