I notice that more and more artists are either moving towards hyper realism or anime-ish artwork. Are there any good examples of RPG artwork with western style cartooning?

It is the same thing. Seriously, they took old Western cartoons and made new Japanese ones.
    Anime is westaboo.

While there might be some historical truth mangled and bleeding deep at the bottom of what you wrote, we both know what OP is talking about are aesthetic criteria which do offer a completely valid and fundamental distinction between 'western style cartoon' and anime. IF you really did not know what OP is talking about you would just be ignorant, but you are intentionally pretending not to grasp the actual meaning of OP and instead decide to be an asshole about something relatively unrelated to the issue. Fuck you.

    Western cartoons are dead.

All of them jumped the 3D bandwagon, only to fail harder (only ones who made good content actually release anything).

Western comics are also dead (in terms of the 'main' superhero ones) too.

Well, yes and no. I mean, when I think of anime I consider it to be a more stable medium, with less deviation from what's stereotypically "normal" to the genre. But I think that much of the reason why cartoons in the west are so much more diverse is because of the constant need to catch its target audience BY being different and hip.

And of course, to my untrained eye, it does seem like it's cheaper to do. Someone more knowledgeable on the subject should probably pop in on whether that's accurate or not.

Well, did it ever make contact with someone and NOT knock them out? I can't remember if Eugene knocked the guards out when he hit them, because the Captain still had a bunch of guys chasing after them, but he also got there with like, 20. I'd say it's an instant knock-out if you confirm a hit on a flatfooted opponent, and it gives +5 to disarm, as well as a +2 or 3 bonus to AC due to the ease of parrying, blocking, and generally turning blades aside with it.

Why are they so afraid of creating an entire world for their hero to be a part of and for us to get lost in?

I like western comics, just not super heroes for that reason.

I feel like most cartoons stick around 3, give or take a few. A lot of anime isn't even past 6. You'll notice that 10 is what would be considered "chibi." Ergo, it's a style within a style. You get things like that and things like... oh, Record of Lodoss War (a great /tg/ classic) in the same category.

Have to agree with you there, pic related. The broad division of japanese/western has never made any sense to me. Regardless of country of origin, all animation is moving pictures.

Styles vary hugely by era, studio, and budget; you can find exceptions for any case. The Last Unicorn for example, a western production, looks very similar to early 70s animation from Japan - unsurprisingly many of the animators from Topcraft went on to get employment at Studio Ghibli.

It's good OP at least includes a pictorial example of the aesthetic he's looking for is. A picture says much more than a loose regional definition ever could.

    WHY

when I first saw anime, when I now see anime, whenever I see someone hypering about their takadakaraka-chan/san/tan/sama herpaderpa
about how good their anime shite is or whatever hugpillow fantasies they wank over at night.

    WHY

I grew up with good French Comics like Blake and Mortimer Spirou And Tin Tin. The French may suck from here to end of the universe, but at comics they at least did something good.

why do people obsess so over this anime style crap of untalented fuck and start drawing something decent and awesome.

Beats me man. But logic says it's either: A choice by the creator to make him seem less threatening (as he's supposed to be the not a bad guy but who does bad things since it's how he was raised) or simply because the creator didn't know any better.

My guess is that it fits better with the simplistic style, tho I don't really care :P

Hopefully it's very abundantly clear from all the examples being posted, mine and others, that regional bias has very, very little to do with the given look of a series. Really, the look of the series is more influenced by:

    a) time period - due to both trends in style and the
sophistication of equipment available. Compare the Snow Queen with any early Disney films.

    and more importantly,
    b) the target audience. A lot of Japanese anime that comes out looks similar because they're all targeting the same market. A work like Inaka Ishak, which is definitely avant-garde stuff, doesn't even bother. The NHK-funded Planetes was meant to draw in a mainstream audience so again, the more highly stylized elements were omitted.

Conversely, the Canadian 6teen is drawn for a tween audience and it absolutely shows.

Canada has a surprising amount of animation output or part-contributions in the animation industry, in part due to French influence/connections, historically excellent arts and culture funding, Canadian content broadcasting restrictions, and the proximity of U.S. markets to sell to.

The Beast Wars and Reboot computer-animated TV series, for example, were mostly done in Vancouver. Other notable productions were the original 1967 Spider-man animated series, and the Babar children's series.

That has not been my message at all; although I think it's a perfectly valid point. Rather, I've been trying to show that it's an absolute fallacy to divide up animation into East/West.

In fact I think the term "anime" is itself terrible; what, just because a show is Japanese-made it deserves a special term? It's illustrations that a strung together to create the illusion of movement, just like all animation.

And lots of funny aneurysm moments (and others not-so-funny: The current nuclear disaster could be minimized in some way if they were savvy enough to just stick their hand out of the window and check that their land is SO ravaged by unnatural disasters that even their old woodcarving art from XIX century contains either giant, towering tsunamis, rape, tentacle rape, or a disturbing blend of both, and plenty of as-of-now art, whenever picturing either tsunamis or tentacle rape, sometimes will bring just said woodcarvings shamelessly into scenes. And they build a... short barrier, counting that a wave bigger than 20 feet should never ever hit them)

Rosa is good, but only because he owes everything to Barks. By Rosas own admission. but he at least stopped that period of scrooge/DD comics that were just reprints of old barks stories (as much as i love them, something new is good too).

No, i know about that. I mean, while the dwarf is more like a gnome in the art, the cleric looks like TURN UNDEAD TURN UNDEAD OH MY GOD YOU ARE HUGE THAT MEANS YOU HAVE HUGE GUTS TURN UNDEAD TURN UNDEAD huge.

I thought someone was going to claim my "poorman's" claim (dwarves could break through many chests, magic-u could take more hits, could hit better and cast more magic than elf. Both just lack the female's "mad props" - some special attacks. "Small cleavage, great cleave". Heh, good one, Elf chick)

A comic strip from the Philippines.

    Rough translation, goes something like:

    Panel 1
Doctor: You've got six months left. In that time, you'll be experiencing more pain.
Man: Doc, no! I don't want to die! I don't want to! I don't want to!

    Panel 2
Doc: Here's my advice: Get married to someone ugly and talkative.
Man: Will that make me get better?

    Panel 3
Doc: Nope, but you'll certainly want to die.

Yeah, sadly it stopped at its second book due to the artist not getting enough income from it. The 90s' Indonesian comic market was dominated by manga such as Doraemon, Dragon Ball, Pokemon etc. with a few Manhwa and Chinese comics towards late 90s. Local comics did rule during the 50s till 70s though, and now it shows some pulses... albeit most of local comic now looks like manga.
Sad to see how Indonesian comics declined like that.

Germany/Austria here. Homegrown comics? ...well, there's photo comics in Youth magazins. Everything else is being imported. Manga gave the scene a bit of a stimulus, but most of the smart kids switch to illustration as the pay's better, you actually get respect by your peers for it and the publishers don't want you to deliver them according to japanese scedules either.

If somebody's good and trying to live on his work, he or she's usually trying to publish in France and in french.

the Situation is not quite as dire in Switzerland, at least circa..I think circa since the 90s.

Sadly, this is the best I could find on my comp.

And yet, that picture could also be a pointy-eared Scooby Doo crew waiting for Elf Knight Fred to come back from walking Fey Hound Scooby.

I love the shit out of Artesia, but the seas of nigh-identical faces make it tiresome to keep the characters straight.

That reminds me, the old official art style of the Zelda series was less 'stereotypical anime'.

I always liked the Legend of Zelda artwork that got done by fans and official artists alike. There's just something about a nigh-suicidally heroic guy that doesn't have a thing to say about anything that I find awesome, regardless of how it's drawn.

Uh, the old art was "stereotypical anime" for the 80s too... styles change. Although the really early art from the NES version had very little stylization, admittedly. But Link has always had an anime look similar to the era of anime he's been in.

Also, here's another recommendation. The Marquis, by Guy Davis.

That is not a singular occurrence in any way but a common pattern. Cafés call a drink "chai" that is a special kind of tea, while the word itself just means tea in places which traditionally make tea in a way roughly similar (hopefully) to the drink the Western cafés sell as chai. It is exactly the same.

I've completed the first volume of The Treasure Hunters, which is the story of the Association of Treasure Hunters fighting the Last Prophet and his shadow-stealing army of demons in 1001 Nights Baghdat.

Contains hardcore Jews, lovers made of living flames and trippy page layouts. And Prophets with Cat Ears, uguu, if you're from /a/.

My mistake. I was thinking of the artwork for Zelda II, which was also for the NES, not the original LoZ.
