    151 KB Omnipotence Quest VII Vedibere !!O+eQDn0BBx8 04/02/11(Sat)18:01 No.14452357
A week has passed since the prophecy worm revealed the secrets of Mardana-Fel’s restoration to Palal Greenward. A rather boring week, at that. After his initial shock Palal seemed to recover and now spends his days in thought, pouring over the tomes he has collected as if searching for something. It soon becomes apparent what. One day with a tug that sends an entire stack of rare, priceless tomes tumbling to the ground he retrieves a book detailing the workings of a “Divinity Orb”, the same text as the one you saw Vassik the Red reading, in fact. A quick flip to confirm its capabilities and he returns to his old self, none too soon as the other druids were beginning to worry over his antisocial obsession the past few days.

Reading through yourself, however, you note that this book was clearly made as a reference to be consulted by a mage who already knew the basic properties of the orb. There is no mention whatsoever made of the orb’s power source.

In contrast, Vassik the Red has continued much as before, inn host by day and dark scholar by night. When you check up on him today, however, you note that he has pulled several books from his library shelves and placed them on podiums around his workbench, to be consulted at will. After flipping through them you are moderately impressed with his ambition. They are detailed (though fragmented) research processes used in the creation of the orbs aeons ago.

Finally Ral Myres lies wracked with fever dreams in the Last Refuge. Even now he hangs on the border between life and death, his wounds still flooded with the deadly toxins of whatever abomination harmed him. His once powerful build and handsome, strong bearing have wasted away with his invalidity, now leaving him little more than a pale bedridden spectre perched precariously on the edge of the abyss.

And you, watching over it all. How shall you touch the world this day, you wonder.

Let's figure out a way to let both Vassik Palal know who was the current orb. Maybe we could even have them team up?

I would suggest letting them both gain access to some sort of magic item that lets you know the location of your true desire. For both of them right now, that seems to be the orb. But just in case it isn't, we should try to foster that particular wanting a little bit more.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)18:08 No.14452422
To pull my post out of the abandoned thread from yesterday...

Ral Myres. I'm not a huge fan of the plague zombie bit that was being thrown around last thread, but this does seem a golden opportunity to do a classic "sell your soul" deal with him. Pose as one of those super-charismatic obvious devils and pull him into a demiplane that we can pass off as a fever dream. Tell him that it's disappointing to watch someone of his promise die in such a pitiful fashion, but we're willing to save his life and even get him started on a better road to power than the one he chose... for a price. Three favors, whatever we ask for, whenever we ask for them.

Yes, we've been keeping mostly to the policy of hands off, but as long as we're meddling in all their lives anyway a little less direct meddling won't hurt too much.

More specifically, we'll make the items in question somewhat like a scrying orb - but that can only show you one thing, perhaps with JUST enough context to where you can find that one thing.
We'll make two orbs, each in the path of both Vassik's and Palal's research. Perhaps we can even make them aware of each other and see what comes of that while they both chase after the twins.

It's all coming together quite beautifully I'd say.

The druid has massive divination abilities. We don't need to figure out ways to tell him things anymore- he'll take the initiative and start divining all the answers he needs to chase down what he wants.

This is vague. So vague. From this point forward if such a vague suggestion is what ends up being chosen I will just go ahead with it and use whatever methods I feel like at the moment for you to implement it.

I seriously doubt you would like this. If you want to prevent that I suggest a little more planning.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)18:19 No.14452543
So are we getting both of them (druid and dark lord) to chase after the twins?

Why not include the sick guy as well?

We could appear to him in his fevered dreams and tell him the location of the orb. Could even make it so that he always knows where the orb is. He feels a pull towards it... We then let dark lord & druid know of his skill and they have to collaborate to heal him.

Then we'll hopefully end up with a "dark trio" of dudes hunting for the orb; each for their own purpose:
    *Druid: To heal the lands
    *Dark Mage: Power!
    *Prince: To stay alive/immortal life?

I dunno though - this is my first time trying to quest on /tg/...

    >*Prince: To stay alive/immortal life?
Or perhaps just to heal him back to normal? Maybe this illness will give him some sort of sapping/mindreading power as well?

We could buff the dark lord with some sort of power he can feel from the sick guy once he's cured. I'm thinking it's like when you have a fever and are burning up: The results of the triage "healing" process are like a well of dark magic that only Vassik {?} can feel... and use. It is interesting - it's like he radiates a certain power...

    Sorry posted too early.

I mean that the sick Prince is still kindof ill, even after the "triage healing" and needs to be tendered to every couple of days in order to stay alive. The invisible energies that also give him a deathly, burning fever will also fuel the dark wizard somehow with an insidious knowledge of an eccentic, long-forgotten type of black magic.

Let's insert a talking dog into Ral's life. It'll be a mostly normal dog, with the exception of having the ability to restore him to perfect health by licking his hand. The dog will be aware of this, and will bargain with Ral for favors.

Sorry for the complete lack of naming the characters OP. I am pissed as a fart :D

Just had another idea and then I'll leave well alone... This buff for Vassik could be knowledge of making the orbs. You know? It would be much more effective than studying how to make one from a book; more like a little bit of hands-on knowledge of forging these things is leaked from Val's aura every time his darkflu is "healed" by Vassik and the druid.

OK I'll shaddap now. Btw love the quest OP. You da mon, mon.

This! For crying out loud, the druid can already divine anything he wants to know better than a major god, and Vassik has the resources of a super-magical city and hundreds of adventurers at his disposal if he decides to use them. They do not need power-ups. They need enough of a nudge in the right direction to make things interesting- and perhaps not even that, because they're intelligent, powerful, and ambitious enough to make things interesting on their own if we have the patience to sit back and watch.

Okay well first visit Ral and tell him about the orb or give him the three wishes (might need constraints on these - tell him "the rules" of these almost-genie-wishes).

Theeen we get him to ask for Vassik. He's in the same inn isn't he? Not sure how to hookup Vassik and Ral with Palal though...

    >give him the three wishes
What? No, you've got it backwards. We offer to heal him, in exchange for HIM doing whatever WE ask three times. He gets nothing except being healthy again from us, and possibly a small token which can let him get our attention in case he wants to offer us something more in exchange for additional power from us (classic devil strategy, always leave them a way to further damn themselves). Make it something innocuous but which will always return to him in good condition should he lose or destroy it.
    >> Anonymous 04/02/11(Sat)18:44 No.14452761
The divinity orb is useless to the druid, as the land needs the power of 6 major gods, 23 regular ones, or 10 million human sacrifices to heal. Him being a god won't help at all .

Vassik is doing fine on his own. We don't need to meddle with him. In fact, I think we should keep him on the backburner for later adventures.

I'm not sure what to do with Ral, if anything. Only thing that comes to mind is to make him into some kind of plaguebearer analogue and have him preach undeath. Him and Vassik are BBEG material. The Druid is going to abuse the fuck out of that prophecy worm we gave him to his own ends.

The only thing I think we can change for the interesting is Ral. Let's have him go plaguebearer. We don't need to appear, as ourselves or a god. Just fix him up and set him loose. He'll figure out the rest as he goes.

We don't have to set him to anything as part of the deal- the mere fact that we could will serve as a driver to his actions.

I don't see how infecting him would cause him to suddenly become a devotee of a plague religion. We can't mess with his head, and I don't think he'd like being eternally ill.

Deciding to implement your plan with Ral Myres, you shift your focus to the third-floor room where he lies delirious and sickly. Hmmm. A quick locking of the door and you fold the weave of the universe over him, opening a way to the office you created so long ago for dealing with Laressa. Manifesting yourself, you take a seat and snap your fingers, purging the toxins from Ral’s system and not only healing him, but restoring him to his health from before. His moans, filling the office, gradually subside and after a minute or two he sits up, confused. Quickly looking around, he takes stock of the location and puts a hand to his chest where the sucking wound once was, feeling only smooth skin instead.

He stands and faces you before looking down at his putrescent puss-soaked robe, then back up at you. Clearing his throat, he addresses you for the first time, “Might I be provided with my clothes as well? Assuming this is not yet another fever dream, I would at least like some dignity and you appear to have power to spare.”

    >For now will do the Ral Myres thing. If people actually want to do the scrying balls thing as well then I have something written up and can post it afterward.

I say we save him in the short term, but keep a couple of the side effects around(maybe throw in a couple of interesting new ones too). In order to be completely cured, he'll need to find the same medicine the paladin's searching for. This could end up with him working with her, against her, or ideally, some combination of both.

You give a sharp laugh and bare your pointed teeth in a grin, burning yellow eyes glancing him over. “Indeed, I do have power to spare. Here you are.” You lift your left hand and flick one taloned finger toward him while exerting your will, causing his robe to vanish and fine royal garb of velvet and cloth-of-gold to manifest upon him. “There, I believe that is what you are used to... prince. Is it not?” A pointed smile again, “As to this being a dream, well, that’s all up to you. Your health, your clothes, even other favors I can provide. All of them are dependant upon you, not I.”

You gesture to the chair in front of your desk and speak, “Sit, we have much to talk about.” you say, leaning back in your own seat while curling your new barbed tail around the glass of glowing ambrosia you manifested upon the desk, tipping it to your lips. Ral’s eyes narrow, but he takes his seat and finally speaks, “I think I know my situation here, I’ve read enough tales and am educated enough to know that much at least. You no doubt know me, but what of you? What shall I address you as? And what, exactly, are you offering me?”

Finishing your refreshment, you place the glass onto the desk once more before reaching out and drawing a small black book from thin air and flipping through it casually. “You may call me Kasepithytus, dear Toric Myres D’An. I am afraid that will have to suffice, I do not think you could even pronounce my true name. As for the offer...” you peer into the book and chuckle. (It’s blank of course, but he doesn’t need to know that. Generating false infernal script is so tedious, after all.) “Well, it seems that you have been quite a interesting fellow. Other than your health and the clothes you now wear, what /shall/ I offer you, I wonder...”

The point of the three-favors bit is both so that we can see how he responds and so that we have a direct line on someone that we can use as a monkey wrench in the lives of everyone else we're meddling with. Otherwise, why heal him at all? It's not like there are any lack of highly motivated and powerful people in this town.

In reply he merely shakes his head and shrugs, "I would prefer to hear your offer before making any... rash decisions. You seem sociable enough and I’m quite happy to be well again, but if we are talking a demonic pact or selling of my soul or some such I would like to hear the offer on the table at least."

At this you raise an eyebrow and give a slight grin, “Oh? You have a standard procedure when dealing with devils, do you? I’m not treading upon ground one of my illustrious brethren has walked before, I trust?” At this he simply shakes his head. “No, I simply have been in... odd situations enough times to know when to keep still. And how to spot when another is attempting to direct the conversation to their liking, as you are.” he observes, flatly, “So, tell me, what is it you have come to offer me Kasepithytus? The royal mages in my youth educated me well enough that I know a meeting such as this is no small investment of power, fever dream or not. You want something, and I will want something in return. All that is left is... the negotiations. What is your offer, and what is the price you demand for it?”

In return I ask only unspecified favors at some later date. They will all be within your ability to accomplish.”

At your words he raises a hand to his chin and appears to consider for nearly five minutes before replying, “I would also request that none of these favors lead to my death.” You crack a smile and shrug before replying, “I can hardly guarantee that, now can I? I could ask you to do something harmless like cross the road, but if you do it without looking out for carriages I can hardly be blamed for that. But I will agree that none of them will lead to your certain death, every one of them will leave you a reasonable chance to continue living. I trust that will suffice?”

He nods, “I agree to those terms. How will I be informed of these tasks?” At this you flip him a small ceramic token, unbreakable and inscribed with some random symbol you made up on the spot. “I will visit you again when I require your services. Should you have need to contact me again for... whatever reason, well, you need only speak my name while holding that symbol and I will hear.”, and you raise your hand as he opens his mouth, “Worry not, none who do not already know of me, personally, will be able to identify it, and it is not magical in the... ordinary sense. You manifest a needle for him and after a brief moment of hesitation his pricks his finger and signs as well. “Excellent! Now, Toric Myres, I believe it is time for you to awake...”

And with that he bolts upright in his bed, opening his eyes to take in the sight of his room in the Last Refuge. On him are the clothes you provided, and his body fully healed once more. Raising his hand, he opens it to reveal the palm-sized ceramic symbol. Though quite pale, he rises and stashes it safely with the rest of his belongings before changing clothes and descending to the great room and devouring several meals worth of food.

Your elf has been busy. It has been a mere three months since you last checked on her, yet in that time... my, you must confess you are impressed. Even as you watch the skyship fleet trundles into formation, twelve wings of twelve ships, each boasting a complement of five hundred highly trained and excellently equipped “Jumpers” to secure landing sites, and nearly two thousand regular troops to deploy behind enemy lines. The normal navy has been increased as well, and you note something that shocks you quite a bit... Laressa has constructed six mobile staging platforms out of dozens of linked barges. As you swoop over them you count nearly a hundred and twenty thousand troops divided between them, as well as repair and reequipping implements to rearm the skyships in battle. Each one appears to have to wings of skyships assigned to it, enabling long range journeys and rearming even during the heat of battle.

    Ingenious.

Diplomatically, however... well, she has never been particularly good with that area, you note. The human states around the new Empire are understandably wary and building their forces at a breakneck pace, but what truly concerns you is the uncharacteristic response of the last elven kingdom, Dar’an. Located deep within the heart of the continent and situated at the center of the Great Wood, it has withdrawn ambassadors and begun marshaling its elite legions of thousand year old warriors and titanically powerful archmages. Additionally, relations with Kaza have been severed... almost always a prelude to war, you note, and this assumption is heavily supported by the urban combat drills Laressa has instructed the generals to provide the troops with.

Also concerning, it seems that someone has been hiring large numbers of adventurers and spreading the rumor of an “Evil Vizier” controlling the Emperor Reginald II as a puppet, sending them to investigate the source. While they are currently, for the most part, complete oafs and inexperienced fools you do note that in your experience their failures will only serve to draw more and more powerful heroes as time passes. It’s almost like some cosmic scaling effect, you muse.

Ugantu, for his part, is embroiled in a full-out civil war between the forces who hold him as a god and those who feel the press of hunger too keenly to care. Battle races through the streets at all hours of the day, and though the rebels numbers are small and disorganized they seem to be inexhaustibly replenished as more go hungry each day.

Your troop of heroes, however, has stopped their progress toward Kaza, choosing to lay over at a rich southern trade city situated on a volcanic island and called Seluca. Annoyed, you descend to see why and find that Lady Voldire has become rather embroiled in a local succession dispute. It seems that an apostle of Loris is a contender for the rulership, aiming to unseat a corrupt and decadent magistrate. Upon hearing of such an esteemed champion of his god in the city it appears he explained the situation and asked for her help, and she was only too happy to provide it. Most of her days are now spent rooting out evidence of corruption rather than travelling, and occasionally in the courts presenting said evidence. The twins seem to have no interest in it however, apparently preferring to spend most of their days either in their room or browsing the bedazzling markets together.

To complete your rounds, you check upon the archlord’s daughter that you spirited away. Interestingly, it seems she has progressed from a mere cook at an inn to the ruling duke’s personal chef, and her reputation is beginning to spread. Gooooood.

While I can appreciate the value of such activities and it might be quite valuable to have a ruler who owes her a major favor, this is annoyingly time consuming. Still, don't want to change things too much- if we dropped down and anonymously hired a half-dozen quality assassins to off the magistrate she's going after, I don't suppose that her Lorisian friend could take the throne rather quickly and it would speed things along?

You have a God in a Jar. You're not entirely sure why anymore, but you think it was because he tried to smite you once.

A golden wedding band embedded in the center of an imperishable block of crystal with six others set into a block beside it. The single ring was your first wife's, she was slain by adventurers when you were still mortal. The second block contains the rings worn by the heroes wives, each taken from them /very/ slowly in your dungeon while they watched.

Beside your desk sits a hyperdimensional planar rift that separates everything thrown into it into constituent elements and scatters them across the multiverse. You use it as a garbage can.

On top of your desk is an ink well and bone stylus. The ink is normal. The stylus is the still-sentient imprisoned demilich Othras, he tried to steal your power and usurp your place as an omnipotent being a few million years ago. He is quite insane from being imprisoned immobile and insensate for all this time.

You have a ring of pure energy that was, at one time, a pebble. You thought it would be interesting to see what happened when you accelerated something to infinite speed and made it travel in a circle. Apparently the item dissolves into a solid ring of raw power that throws off heat and light. You use it as both a space heater and lightsource, hanging from the ceiling.

A dark ritual of your own unique devising, following a long, long, LONG period of research and power-gathering.

You sort of blew up that reality as you ascended. Woops. You didn't even mean to, really, it was just a side effect. Obviously people in other universes don't know about it.

Millions perhaps billions of years ago
No one remembers stuff from that long ago, and likely anything that was ever written down was destroyed by the wanton destruction we pursued and others still pursue

We were married at one point, eh? Since she was killed by adventurers, I assume that means she was assisting in our evil plots in the past?

Did we pretty much work alone or did we have loyal minions that followed us whenever plans of ours were foiled by adventures? Although I guess it doesn't really matter now since they'd all be gone now with that realiy being destroyed, heh.

As an omnipotent, how do we compare to those "unknowable" cthulu types that exist "outside" of reality.

We bitchslap them around for fun and games. Omnipotence is kinda useful that way.

You've been married at several points, and had more concubines or serial relationships than you can remember. You haven't found anyone you cared for in a very, VERY long time, however, and even if you had... well, they will always die before you no matter what. Even if you give them "Immortality" or "nigh-infinite power" that is still no match for omnipotence. It's lonely at the top in addition to being boring.

You've found most eldritch horrors to be entirely underwhelming. They're powerful to mortals and can even, on occasion, throw down with the gods... but that's small time compared to you.

We should probably make something incredibly stupid and random happen in kaza every time we get disappointed with ugantu
Mostly so that there atleast something entertaining while we see him being a lazy ass
